Thankyou. I really enjoyed this interview.
I chose this film on ABC iview without seeing who the director was (he’s one of my favourites) & without knowing anything about it.
I chose it primarily because it was an Australian film, & because it’s monochromatic, something that can lead to a great feel/look for certain stories & characters.
I didn’t even recognise Simon Baker at first. So interesting to hear about Ivan’s process working with him to co/create such a great character/performance.
The choice of actors is great IMHO.
I also have been needing some inspiration because I don’t write, take photos or make short films these days. Ivan Sen is always inspiring. What a talented man. Auteur is definitely an apt description.
At the end of Limbo when I saw it was his film I felt moved to share it & also learn a bit more about it, how I came to watch this interview. There’s a great review in the Guardian.
I’d really like to see this at the cinema, the cinematography deserves this. Amazing sense of place. I can see how the location inspired the storytelling.
I remember when I first was doing a Screen & Media course, & we were asked to introduce ourselves & name a favourite film /director & why & I said ‘Ivan Sen…Beneath Clouds’. Warwick Thornton is also a director whose work I love.
Watching Limbo I recalled Ivan’s doco ‘A Sister’s Love’ about the abduction & murder of a loved Indigenous woman, Lois Roberts. She disappeared when hitchhiking from the small rural town I live in..Nimbin, Northern NSW.
I went to a screening of this film & Ivan was doing a Q & A. I admit I was absolutely floored & gutted by this powerful film. Lois’ killer remains at large, a scary thought, just like Charlotte’s killer in Limbo. I found myself wondering if Lois’ story & working with her sister Rhoda Roberts influenced Ivan in the storytelling of Limbo. If I’m ever lucky enough to meet Ivan I’d like to ask him that.
Like the cops in Limbo said to about Charlotte’s disappearance ‘she’s just gone Walkabout’ Lois’ disappearance led to the same attitude from the investigating cops at the time. It’s a common issue, the lack of true justice for indigenous people especially for murdered women & deaths in custody.
I look forward to viewing the community based stories Ivan mentions towards the end of this interview. I’ve watched quite a few of Ivan’s films,& I’ll drink in anything he produces. I’m still to watch his docos about Charlie Perkins & Tommy E. Lewis. I’ll be seeking them out.
