I was a nurse working the ICU at U of M the day that happened. The helicopter crew was in the air and saw the smoke and flames, they went to the scene to assist. At that time the pilots were former Vietnam vets, so they were not afraid. I will say the nursing staff at U of M pediatric ICU were the best, the helicopter transport crews were precision. Every precaution was taken to protect this child. I wondered how she did, happy she is doing well. I did not take care of her directly, but this was the old unit, so we all could see each patient.

Just a few months later, Baby Jessica fell in a well and was trapped for 58 hours. Baby Jessica and Cecilia are linked in my memory. As a kid, witnessing not one, but two miraculous survival stories changed me. I am glad I learned that even the tiniest humans can be overcomers.
I seen flight 255 fireball when it crashed I was only in 3rd grade but wow I forgot about that one. I was young at the time but man you are not kidding two miracles for sure.
THe co-pilot and I, Dave Dodds, were good friends. We were hired together at North Central/Republic. We went through training together and graduated from that training together. Dave was a really wonderful person and a real family man. At a point in my life I was going through some stuff. Dave was the first person to contact me and offer his help and counsel. I still miss him to this day.

I'd never heard of this incident. Was it a compressor stall/surge? Yea, I could look it up, but I'd much rather hear it from someone who would know, especially with how controlled and distorted google, wikipedia and the internet as a whole are these days.

Flaps and slats not deployed, and the breaker that would warn "slats slats slats!" was turned off, due to the fact it would make that warning, even when taxiing. Apparently, it was normal to turn it off as it was annoying. Did not complete preflight checklist. One of my dad's best friends, ironically named John Kennedy, was one of 14 GM employees to die in the crash, he was on his way to the test track in AZ. Deadliest plane crash in Michigan history, the second deadliest in the country at the time it happened. Worst crash ever for northwest airlines, and Deadliest crash to have a sole survivor.
I had never thought about how we treat survivors, and how what we say and do may actually alienate them and make them feel alone. I'm grateful for this new perspective, and hope for healing and peace for all of the sole survivors of these tragedies. I'm sure that is a very lonely path to walk, but I'm happy that they have connected with each other to create a community where they feel understood.
My parent’s best friend passed that day. He was on the ground, driving home from work. My dad had to identify his body. I’ll never forget my mom, sister, and I all hugging and crying in the kitchen when we found out.
I was 16 years old when this happened. I was flying on a Northwest plane approaching the airport after spending a week with my sister north of San Francisco. My parents were driving down from Cadillac to pick me up when they heard about the Northwest crash, and they thought it was my flight. I sat in Cleveland for 4 hours to fly home. When I finally did get to Detroit, I ran to the edge of the parking deck to see the smoldering plane on the road. It was the next day that I found out about Cecilia.
That must have been pure hell for your parents until they found out you were ok. I’ll bet they appreciated you so much more after that and didn’t mind the little things. Even if they were the most perfect parents in the world, it would still be a wake-up call. Like, nothing else on the list of things to do that day (or ever) would matter if they found that you were gone.
I live in the Phoenix area and remember sitting in my vehicle hearing about the accident. As the newscaster announced the accident, he wasn't sure where the flight was headed and paused a bit and then said Phoenix. My heart sank. Besides those affected in the Detroit area, there's another group affected in the Phoenix area as well. Nick Vanos, who played for the Phoenix Suns, was also on that flight.
So much preassure to be THE ONE... when you suffered unimaginable trauma that will alter your life... success meassured by expectations is a set-up for failures. I'm so glad she was sheltered from the world while she grew into adulthood. ❤

That day happened to be the 50th anniversary for one set of my grandparents. My family went to a large celebration at a church, then came home and saw it on the news.
This happened on my middle son's first birthday. We lived in Westland and celebrated his birthday at my Momand Dad's house in Milford. As we were driving home the sky had a really strange color and the wind was coming in mixed directions. I said to my husband , 4 year old son and 1 year old son that something terrible was going to happen but I didn't; know what. When we arrived home it was on the TV screen showing the the words Northwest Airlines Jet crashed at Metro Airport. Of course news media was not like it is today. So sad. There is a monument for flight 255 in Arizona.
I was with my parents on the front porch of my house on Cherry Hill in Dearborn when we heard the crash. I think about Cecelia often. I’m glad she is doing well.
I was also in Dearbon, just off Outer Drive south of Michigan Ave. My mom came to the top of the stairs and called down to ask if we were burning something because the smell of the smoke reached us just before the news of the crash.
I was in Taylor and heard the crash felt the explosion and all the days after the smells. I think about it often truly horrible.. so glad she’s OK and doing something in service to others. Her parents would be so proud.
I remember that day vividly, and the following days sitting at my kitchen table crying as we leaned about the people that were lost. I’m comforted to know that Cecelia grew into a lovely young woman.

I live in Romulus, Michigan. I remember that day like yesterday. I know John Thiede, he is a good person. He was a brand new Paid-on-Call Firefighter(volunteer) at the time. Just a Miricale, he heard her and was there to help. The scene was horrible, that plane went under the railroad trestle and both East and West bound lanes of I-94 before it came to a stop. Motorist were killed at the intersection of Middlebelt Road and Wick Road. The corner post for the Northeast corner of the airport fence is right there. Vehicles were knocked off the highway. Truly amazing there were not more ground fatalities. That intersection and on and exit ramps are usually full of at least a hundred vehicles. That little girl is forever a member of my community. Every time I drive through there, especially on Middlebelt Road I just shake my head in wonder and think of her. Just a Miricale.
Imagine her mother realized the doom, and instead of frozen in fear, she still had the presence of mind and quick thinking to devise a plan to save her daughter and possibly decreased her own survival chance. What a great mother.

My uncle was a pilot for BEA in the UK after the war. He was killed in the crash of his DC-3 in London in 1950. The lone survivor that day was the single Steward. I’ve often wondered what became of him. I remember this crash so well, and also often wondered about the little girl. I was flying to Arizona from NJ, with a connection in St. Louis. United had made a mess of things overbooking the flight, and by the time we pushed back a line of severe storms was on us. We taxied out and then the engines shut down and we were parked. This was going to be a long one, so the flight attendants thought it a good idea to bring down the screens - no individual screens in those days - and tune in the local news. The lead story that evening? You guessed it, the crash of a Northwest flight out of Detroit. For probably 10 minutes before the flight attendants noticed we watched footage of flaming debris and shredded airplane parts as we were told initially “no survivors”. It wasn’t long after that that they brought out the drinks cart. I imagine the nervous flyers were ordering doubles…
They need to change the title of this story because it sounds as if Celcelia just died and we R remembering her but she is still alive, thank goodness.....The tittle should say remembering Flight 255 victims and lone survivor Cecelia.
I covered the crash for the Arizona Republic, arriving the morning after it happened as I had been on another assignment in Memphis. I'll never forget the press conference at which Cecelia's grandfather described the lilac nail polish her grandmother applied to the little girl's nails just before the family left Pennsylvania, and how the polish had been one of the ways Cecelia's relatives identified her. There wasn't a dry eye in that room as her grandfather spoke, a room packed with reporters from all over the nation who had covered other difficult stories but none like this one. It's a privilege to see Cecelia here as an adult and to know she grew up strong with her family's love in Alabama.
If you ever see the shot inside her room when it shows the gifts sent to her in the middle you will see a little box my husband sent to her it was his Santa Claus that he got for Christmas before he was a year old in 1958 he sent it in a keepsake box 6 months later he received a letter and photo of her thanking him for the present he sent to her.
I remember that crash well, even after all these years. I had dropped my folks off at the airport & had returned home to the news that a plane had crashed upon takeoff. At the time of the news story, they weren't saying the flight number yet. It was very stressful watching the news waiting to hear what flight it was. I was glad to hear it wasn't their plane but felt so sorry to all the families that lost their loved ones that day.
I understand what you mean. Relief that it’s not your family and at the same time grief for the families of those lost. My nephew died in a car crash when he was 19. He was with some friends, 1 of whom survived. I remember in my initial grief I asked God if he could change it and it have the survivor die and my nephew who had lived. As soon as I said it I apologized and said I didn’t mean it but I didn’t understand why he had to die. In the moment you would do anything to change the outcome. I can’t imagine being in your shoes and the terror you felt in that long time not knowing what flight it was and if your parents were safe.💕
My parents and brother suffered all afternoon thinking that I had died on AA191 in Chicago 45 years ago. I had my flights booked, Albany to O'Hare to LAX. They refused to discuss that day and would be visibly upset if somebody asked me about my near miss. They had spent hours thinking that I perished in the crash. I had changed my mind while awaiting the cab to the airport in front of the Schenectady Holiday Inn. Air crashes haunt me. I remember hearing of this little girl in the Summer of 1987 knowing that it will affect her entire life.
@@bexh2012 I flew all over the planet as a General Electric Field Engineer. That was a week from Hell. I wanted desperately to go home to LA and finish my vacation. GE interrupted it, as usual. They say go, you go. Forget weddings, Thanksgiving, funerals, Christmas, friends, family. While waiting on the cab to the airport (Albany to Ohare to LAX), I felt the worst feeling of doom, gloom, utter hopelessness, futility, sorrow. It had ZERO to do with air travel. This lasted maybe 3 minutes. I never even gave it a thought about aircraft crashing. It was such a gut punch out of nowhere. SUDDENLY, I said to myself ''I'm not getting on ANY plane today even if they fire me.'' This was weird but suddenly the terrible feeling went away and I was filled with pure joy like I was standing under a warm tropical waterfall. This actually happened in the 1990's when my son and I were standing under a small trickle of water at Waimea Falls on Oahu. There was a drought but the overnight storm sent water down to the falls. Warm water in a torrent just like you opened the flood gates, pouring all over me. Pure Heaven. My son and I were swimming in the pool in front of the falls eating floating guavas that came down in the rush of water. I KNEW this was DeJa'Vu from the warm feeling I got just before the cab came in Schenectady. I even took a 4 hour miserable bus ride to Manhattan that day for my Visa despite having 2 paid tickets by commuter plane from Albany to JFK. My parents thought I had been killed. The next day after the crash, I took 2 DC-10's and a DC-9 and spent the next 6 weeks in Venezuela on a job. I enjoyed every minute of the flight from Miami to Caracas watching the blue Caribbean and many islands. Got stranded in Maracaibo at the end of the job for 8 days as they grounded all US bound DC-10's. I was a standby passenger on an ancient Boeing 707, the last passenger called. 1979 was the weirdest year of my life. I was almost killed a few times, even in the Middle East. I am not sure why God sent Angels to save me. I hope I do my job without screwing up.

I was asleep that afternoon in the Lexington Hotel in Manhattan after the week from Hell. It would take a book to describe how AA191 wrapped around my life and affected me ever since. 20 years after the crash, I randomly met an AA Flight attendant at a flea market in NorCal who became my girlfriend for the next 9 years. We hit it off right away. She bragged about walking across the Pacific once a week, San Jose to Narita, Japan, and back on Boeing 777's (haha, my high mileage girlfriend). Her roommate and best friend at the Dallas and then San Diego AA Bases was Nancy Sullivan who perished in the crash of AA191. Captain Lux was not scheduled to fly that trip but volunteered to cover for the scheduled pilot. Even more strange was that I met Nancy maybe a week before on a night flight. She had a pet expression to tease rowdy passengers. I mentioned what she said to my new GF and she immediately burst into tears. THAT WAS NANCY! I was 18 when this happened, and I will never forget the picture in the Sunday STAR of this beautiful angel with her shorn head and hugging a teddy bear in her hospital bed. She and Jessica McClure restored people's faith and patriotism again.

I think of and thank all the people who have worked hard to minimize transportation accidents. The engineers and the accident investigators who helped make such accidents a rarity. We’ve even had entire years go by without a single person dying in commercial aviation in the US. That took a lot of dedication to achieve.
When you say 'miracle', what you're actually saying is that this woman was VERY lucky and fortunate to have been in a unique situation/location on the aircraft that enabled her to survive.
I was in third grade when I seen the fireball of this crash. I lived in oakbrook apartments across the street from metro airport and I’ll never forget that day can’t imagine what this poor girl has Been through.

You have to be a bit twisted to keep faith with 'God', as a result of this poor girl being saved while ignoring the fact that your 'God' saw fit to kill 156 other people including her own family.. A huge tragedy for those 156 people, their families and loved ones.
Dude - change the title of the video. When the person is the embodiment of not dying in a plane crash, don't name the video as if she is now dead. You should be more aware than that. If I temember correctly, her grandmother lived in my city and they brought her to our Children's Hospital. It was all very hush-hush to protect her privacy as well as her physical and emotional health. Edit: It was her aunt and uncle, the video said. As locals, we knew very little.
When I was training to be a flight attendant, we studied this particular crash amongst many others, and it was a testament, how something and sometimes an incredible tragedy can be survivable. My heart goes out to all those soul survivors enter the families of all those who perished in all these crashes, I wished God bless to all of them.

This is the second time in the last few years that I've seen something about her. I vividly remember this precisely because she alone survived at 4. Like others, I often wondered how she was doing. I'm always happy to see updates.
There is a memorial right there on a hill at I 94 and Middlebelt. I pointed it out to my coworker just yesterday. You can see it when you are at the light coming off I 94 East at Middlebelt-I think it has all the names of those that passed away. I remember that day because I was Pregnant with my 2nd son. 37 years ago.
I was at work not far away at Inkster & Michigan Ave. We heard the crash. We were devastated as a community. I've never forgotten that little survivor.. she has grown into a beautiful, intelligent young lady. Seeing the tattoo..man, that choked me up.
I remember we were cleaning up after my brother’s first birthday party, and we felt/heard the impact. Assumed no one was alive. We were listening to the radio when she was found. I absolutely remember Cecilia.
My heart absolutely broke for that little girl in this crash. Losing her whole family at age four. Could anything possibly be sadder? I’m so glad to see she turned out to be a healthy beautiful woman, and I pray to God that she has peace and happiness in her life 🙏🏼
I was headed from NJ to Detroit that day with my family to visit my brother who lived in a suburb of Detroit. I think we hit traffic from this and it took quite a bit longer to to arrive as we got to their house late at night. We learned from my brother what happened as the News was on when we got there. I remember watching the coverage and then learning about the single survivor. I was 13 at the time. Once in a while over the years I'd wonder how she was doing. Glad to hear she is doing well.
She looked familiar and it took me a little while to figure out why. I watched the documentary on TH-cam. It is called Sole Survivor and is from 2013, I don’t know why this channel is making it seem like something new.
I am glad she is doing so well and all the survivors from the program. She lost her Mom, Dad and brother. Her Aunt and Uncle raised her well, so many hero's in her story.
Beautiful video for sure. I was just a kid when this happened and I sent her a Teddy Bear. My old man worked for NW and was with Republic before the merger. He knew a few of the crew members including the Captain. I will never forget that night when the phone rang, and my dad had to get to Detroit right away because of the crash. Such a tragedy.
We had a family friend who worked at U of M hospital the time of the crash. They brought Cecelia there, and she was very well protected from all of the news people. I have always wondered how she was doing.
Same for little 9 years old Deseree in CA. She lost her entire family when their boat capsized. She was the only survivor after being in the water for 20 hours.
I always wonder about Sailor Gutzler - the 7yr old who's family plane crashed in the Kentucky woods and she walked a mile through the thick woods to a light on in a cottage for safety.
That even has always tugged at me in such a way. I am so proud of Cecelia that she has moved on with her life, and to also open up and share her story.🙏
I was on the expressway when the crash happened. We were looking for a gas station & for some reason went in the opposite direction. By the time we got back on the expressway going a short distance traffic was stopped. The smell of burning was overwhelming. My attorney's Niece was on that flight. Prayers for the young lady who survived & also for the loss of all the people.
I remember when that happened. I was 19 and coming home from a girls' vacation in Tahoe when we heard the news on the radio. I remember hearing that she was saved by the heroic action of her mother shielding her with her own body and I cried for all of them. It's my most vivid memory of the trip. This video title had me thinking that she had passed but I'm glad she didn't. As a mother, I'm sure that her mom would have been very proud and happy to see how she's grown.
I was up north in Michigan on a dirt biking trip. We were packing up the bikes to go home and had the radio on in the truck when the disc jockey came on and reported the horrible crash of a plane just outside Detroit, which is where we are from. I remember thinking of all the people and the loss of life.
The more I read the comments, the more emotional I get. So many people recounting this day and sharing their thoughts of Cecelia. Makes me appreciate how we are all connected in ways unbeknownst to us.
I was a paramedic working in Bay City the day of the crash. There was a call from the Metro area asking for the number of available critical care beds at our facility (Bay Medical Center), as well as any ambulances that could head south. Other hospitals in our area were also queried. Soon it was obvious that none of this information was not necessary.
This piece of work speaks beyond the veil! There is so much pressure on us all to be The One.... Spiritually and esoterically this story hits home... at the heart. The core of who we are is our soul. I grew up near Merriman and Ecorse, about 3 miles from the crash. Saw orange in the sky that night but didn’t know until later what had happened. I was 15. Time goes by so fast! We will see and meet them in the promised paradise ~ Revelation 21:4

I was a student at ASU at the time of the crash. I was all signed up for classes, and was surprised to find out that one of my professors was switched out for a different one. Shortly after classes started I had heard that her father was supposed to be my instructor. I have followed her story and am so proud of her. Thank you Cecelia for sharing your story with us. I was driving on I-94 heading westbound when that flight crashed right behind me…it was so violent and so close, I was in complete disbelief. Pulled over and couldn’t even catch my breath…later that night I heard about a little girl that had survived. It was a tragedy and a miracle…a horrible title to this video.

Just a few months later, Baby Jessica fell in a well and was trapped for 58 hours. Baby Jessica and Cecilia are linked in my memory. As a kid, witnessing not one, but two miraculous survival stories changed me. I am glad I learned that even the tiniest humans can be overcomers.
I seen flight 255 fireball when it crashed I was only in 3rd grade but wow I forgot about that one. I was young at the time but man you are not kidding two miracles for sure.
Wow I think I remember about baby Jessica now it was on TV like crazy if I’m remembering right. I’m also remembering this girl now too!
I have always wondered what career path both women went into?
THe co-pilot and I, Dave Dodds, were good friends. We were hired together at North Central/Republic. We went through training together and graduated from that training together. Dave was a really wonderful person and a real family man. At a point in my life I was going through some stuff. Dave was the first person to contact me and offer his help and counsel. I still miss him to this day.

@@Jade_902 Thank you Jade. 255 affected so many lives. I retired a few years back from the airlines that Dave and I started with. I made it to captain after 32 years. Dave would have retired with me had things gone differently. Some things are just not meant to be.

Yea, I could look it up, but I'd much rather hear it from someone who would know, especially with how controlled and distorted google, wikipedia and the internet as a whole are these days.
@@Ryan-mq2mi My understanding of it: Plane improperly configured for takeoff. Flaps and slats not deployed, and the breaker that would warn "slats slats slats!" was turned off, due to the fact it would make that warning, even when taxiing. Apparently, it was normal to turn it off as it was annoying. Did not complete preflight checklist. One of my dad's best friends, ironically named John Kennedy, was one of 14 GM employees to die in the crash, he was on his way to the test track in AZ. Deadliest plane crash in Michigan history, the second deadliest in the country at the time it happened. Worst crash ever for northwest airlines, and Deadliest crash to have a sole survivor.
I had never thought about how we treat survivors, and how what we say and do may actually alienate them and make them feel alone. I'm grateful for this new perspective, and hope for healing and peace for all of the sole survivors of these tragedies. I'm sure that is a very lonely path to walk, but I'm happy that they have connected with each other to create a community where they feel understood.

My parent’s best friend passed that day. He was on the ground, driving home from work. My dad had to identify his body. I’ll never forget my mom, sister, and I all hugging and crying in the kitchen when we found out.
I lost an uncle on that day, what a great man.

What diff does age matter?
I was 16 years old when this happened. I was flying on a Northwest plane approaching the airport after spending a week with my sister north of San Francisco. My parents were driving down from Cadillac to pick me up when they heard about the Northwest crash, and they thought it was my flight. I sat in Cleveland for 4 hours to fly home. When I finally did get to Detroit, I ran to the edge of the parking deck to see the smoldering plane on the road. It was the next day that I found out about Cecilia.
That must have been pure hell for your parents until they found out you were ok. I’ll bet they appreciated you so much more after that and didn’t mind the little things. Even if they were the most perfect parents in the world, it would still be a wake-up call.
Like, nothing else on the list of things to do that day (or ever) would matter if they found that you were gone.
@@im-gi2pg , my parents pulled into a gas station to use a payphone to call my sister at home, and she told them it was an outgoing plane.
I live in the Phoenix area and remember sitting in my vehicle hearing about the accident. As the newscaster announced the accident, he wasn't sure where the flight was headed and paused a bit and then said Phoenix. My heart sank. Besides those affected in the Detroit area, there's another group affected in the Phoenix area as well. Nick Vanos, who played for the Phoenix Suns, was also on that flight.
My mom was a NWA reservations agent, fielding calls when this occurred. A classmate of mine lost her parents. So sad for the families and friends.
So much preassure to be THE ONE... when you suffered unimaginable trauma that will alter your life... success meassured by expectations is a set-up for failures. I'm so glad she was sheltered from the world while she grew into adulthood. ❤
I can't help but compare this to the Harry Potter story...of course, this happened first, was in a different hemisphere, and wasn't fictional. Other than that, exactly the same lol
I'll never forget this, this happened on my 8th birthday. I've never forgotten about this, I lived about 15 miles from the crash site.
That day happened to be the 50th anniversary for one set of my grandparents. My family went to a large celebration at a church, then came home and saw it on the news.
This happened on my middle son's first birthday. We lived in Westland and celebrated his birthday at my Momand Dad's house in Milford. As we were driving home the sky had a really strange color and the wind was coming in mixed directions. I said to my husband , 4 year old son and 1 year old son that something terrible was going to happen but I didn't; know what. When we arrived home it was on the TV screen showing the the words Northwest Airlines Jet crashed at Metro Airport. Of course news media was not like it is today. So sad. There is a monument for flight 255 in Arizona.

I was with my parents on the front porch of my house on Cherry Hill in Dearborn when we heard the crash. I think about Cecelia often. I’m glad she is doing well.
I was also in Dearbon, just off Outer Drive south of Michigan Ave. My mom came to the top of the stairs and called down to ask if we were burning something because the smell of the smoke reached us just before the news of the crash.
I was in Taylor and heard the crash felt the explosion and all the days after the smells. I think about it often truly horrible.. so glad she’s OK and doing something in service to others. Her parents would be so proud.
I remember that day vividly, and the following days sitting at my kitchen table crying as we leaned about the people that were lost. I’m comforted to know that Cecelia grew into a lovely young woman.
I remember when that happened. Being from Michigan probably makes it more memorable to me. And the fact that there was that one survivor, that precious little girl. It's nice to see her all grown up and doing well even though there is a sadness about her. Thanks for sharing her story and including others that were there that day.

He was a brand new Paid-on-Call Firefighter(volunteer) at the time.
Just a Miricale, he heard her and was there to help.
The scene was horrible, that plane went under the railroad trestle and both East and West bound lanes of I-94 before it came to a stop.
Motorist were killed at the intersection of Middlebelt Road and Wick Road.
The corner post for the Northeast corner of the airport fence is right there.
Vehicles were knocked off the highway.
Truly amazing there were not more ground fatalities.
That intersection and on and exit ramps are usually full of at least a hundred vehicles.
That little girl is forever a member of my community.
Every time I drive through there, especially on Middlebelt Road I just shake my head in wonder and think of her.

Imagine her mother realized the doom, and instead of frozen in fear, she still had the presence of mind and quick thinking to devise a plan to save her daughter and possibly decreased her own survival chance. What a great mother.

My uncle was a pilot for BEA in the UK after the war. He was killed in the crash of his DC-3 in London in 1950. The lone survivor that day was the single Steward. I’ve often wondered what became of him.
I remember this crash so well, and also often wondered about the little girl. I was flying to Arizona from NJ, with a connection in St. Louis. United had made a mess of things overbooking the flight, and by the time we pushed back a line of severe storms was on us. We taxied out and then the engines shut down and we were parked. This was going to be a long one, so the flight attendants thought it a good idea to bring down the screens - no individual screens in those days - and tune in the local news. The lead story that evening? You guessed it, the crash of a Northwest flight out of Detroit. For probably 10 minutes before the flight attendants noticed we watched footage of flaming debris and shredded airplane parts as we were told initially “no survivors”. It wasn’t long after that that they brought out the drinks cart. I imagine the nervous flyers were ordering doubles…
They need to change the title of this story because it sounds as if Celcelia just died and we R remembering her but she is still alive, thank goodness.....The tittle should say remembering Flight 255 victims and lone survivor Cecelia.
I covered the crash for the Arizona Republic, arriving the morning after it happened as I had been on another assignment in Memphis. I'll never forget the press conference at which Cecelia's grandfather described the lilac nail polish her grandmother applied to the little girl's nails just before the family left Pennsylvania, and how the polish had been one of the ways Cecelia's relatives identified her. There wasn't a dry eye in that room as her grandfather spoke, a room packed with reporters from all over the nation who had covered other difficult stories but none like this one. It's a privilege to see Cecelia here as an adult and to know she grew up strong with her family's love in Alabama.
If you ever see the shot inside her room when it shows the gifts sent to her in the middle you will see a little box my husband sent to her it was his Santa Claus that he got for Christmas before he was a year old in 1958 he sent it in a keepsake box 6 months later he received a letter and photo of her thanking him for the present he sent to her.

I remember that crash well, even after all these years. I had dropped my folks off at the airport & had returned home to the news that a plane had crashed upon takeoff. At the time of the news story, they weren't saying the flight number yet. It was very stressful watching the news waiting to hear what flight it was. I was glad to hear it wasn't their plane but felt so sorry to all the families that lost their loved ones that day.
I understand what you mean. Relief that it’s not your family and at the same time grief for the families of those lost.
My nephew died in a car crash when he was 19. He was with some friends, 1 of whom survived. I remember in my initial grief I asked God if he could change it and it have the survivor die and my nephew who had lived. As soon as I said it I apologized and said I didn’t mean it but I didn’t understand why he had to die. In the moment you would do anything to change the outcome.
I can’t imagine being in your shoes and the terror you felt in that long time not knowing what flight it was and if your parents were safe.💕
My parents and brother suffered all afternoon thinking that I had died on AA191 in Chicago 45 years ago. I had my flights booked, Albany to O'Hare to LAX. They refused to discuss that day and would be visibly upset if somebody asked me about my near miss. They had spent hours thinking that I perished in the crash. I had changed my mind while awaiting the cab to the airport in front of the Schenectady Holiday Inn. Air crashes haunt me. I remember hearing of this little girl in the Summer of 1987 knowing that it will affect her entire life.

@@bexh2012 I flew all over the planet as a General Electric Field Engineer. That was a week from Hell. I wanted desperately to go home to LA and finish my vacation. GE interrupted it, as usual. They say go, you go. Forget weddings, Thanksgiving, funerals, Christmas, friends, family.
While waiting on the cab to the airport (Albany to Ohare to LAX), I felt the worst feeling of doom, gloom, utter hopelessness, futility, sorrow. It had ZERO to do with air travel. This lasted maybe 3 minutes. I never even gave it a thought about aircraft crashing. It was such a gut punch out of nowhere. SUDDENLY, I said to myself ''I'm not getting on ANY plane today even if they fire me.''
This was weird but suddenly the terrible feeling went away and I was filled with pure joy like I was standing under a warm tropical waterfall. This actually happened in the 1990's when my son and I were standing under a small trickle of water at Waimea Falls on Oahu. There was a drought but the overnight storm sent water down to the falls. Warm water in a torrent just like you opened the flood gates, pouring all over me. Pure Heaven.
My son and I were swimming in the pool in front of the falls eating floating guavas that came down in the rush of water. I KNEW this was DeJa'Vu from the warm feeling I got just before the cab came in Schenectady. I even took a 4 hour miserable bus ride to Manhattan that day for my Visa despite having 2 paid tickets by commuter plane from Albany to JFK. My parents thought I had been killed.
The next day after the crash, I took 2 DC-10's and a DC-9 and spent the next 6 weeks in Venezuela on a job. I enjoyed every minute of the flight from Miami to Caracas watching the blue Caribbean and many islands. Got stranded in Maracaibo at the end of the job for 8 days as they grounded all US bound DC-10's. I was a standby passenger on an ancient Boeing 707, the last passenger called. 1979 was the weirdest year of my life. I was almost killed a few times, even in the Middle East. I am not sure why God sent Angels to save me. I hope I do my job without screwing up.
@@bexh2012 Check this out...a page in my passport showing my Venezuela entry Visa stamp. Note the date...May 25, 1979. AA191 crashed a few hours after my passport was stamped. I was asleep that afternoon in the Lexington Hotel in Manhattan after the week from Hell. It would take a book to describe how AA191 wrapped around my life and affected me ever since. 20 years after the crash, I randomly met an AA Flight attendant at a flea market in NorCal who became my girlfriend for the next 9 years. We hit it off right away. She bragged about walking across the Pacific once a week, San Jose to Narita, Japan, and back on Boeing 777's (haha, my high mileage girlfriend). Her roommate and best friend at the Dallas and then San Diego AA Bases was Nancy Sullivan who perished in the crash of AA191.
Captain Lux was not scheduled to fly that trip but volunteered to cover for the scheduled pilot. Even more strange was that I met Nancy maybe a week before on a night flight. She had a pet expression to tease rowdy passengers. I mentioned what she said to my new GF and she immediately burst into tears. THAT WAS NANCY! She then said that she prayed to Nancy before we met because she was so lonely and needed a boyfriend. I agreed with her....Nancy came through. No doubt whatsoever.

I was 18 when this happened, and I will never forget the picture in the Sunday STAR of this beautiful angel with her shorn head and hugging a teddy bear in her hospital bed. She and Jessica McClure restored people's faith and patriotism again.

When you say 'miracle', what you're actually saying is that this woman was VERY lucky and fortunate to have been in a unique situation/location on the aircraft that enabled her to survive.

I was in third grade when I seen the fireball of this crash. I lived in oakbrook apartments across the street from metro airport and I’ll never forget that day can’t imagine what this poor girl has Been through.
I was 17 and lived about 5 miles away. Drove down there and obviously the roads were closed but I could still see the wreckage. It was devastating.

I had just finished work in that neighborhood 1/2 hour befor the crash. Was shocked when I heard the story on the radio.

You have to be a bit twisted to keep faith with 'God', as a result of this poor girl being saved while ignoring the fact that your 'God' saw fit to kill 156 other people including her own family.. A huge tragedy for those 156 people, their families and loved ones.

Dude - change the title of the video. When the person is the embodiment of not dying in a plane crash, don't name the video as if she is now dead. You should be more aware than that. Also, if the title is deliberate, then have a bit more respect and don't mess with and use tragedy to grab views. Many others have noted this below, like a few thousand others.

If I temember correctly, her grandmother lived in my city and they brought her to our Children's Hospital. It was all very hush-hush to protect her privacy as well as her physical and emotional health.
Edit: It was her aunt and uncle, the video said. As locals, we knew very little.

When I was training to be a flight attendant, we studied this particular crash amongst many others, and it was a testament, how something and sometimes an incredible tragedy can be survivable. My heart goes out to all those soul survivors enter the families of all those who perished in all these crashes, I wished God bless to all of them.
That had to be hard on her growing up. But she took a grip on it accepted it as best she could and made a life for herself. Thank gof for that
When you say "remembering" someone, usually it's because they're not around anymore. Not sure why you'd say that about someone who is still very much alive.
This is the second time in the last few years that I've seen something about her. I vividly remember this precisely because she alone survived at 4. Like others, I often wondered how she was doing. I'm always happy to see updates.
I remember this day. My brother-in-law saw the whole thing and stopped to help. She is a gift from God.

There is a memorial right there on a hill at I 94 and Middlebelt. I pointed it out to my coworker just yesterday. You can see it when you are at the light coming off I 94 East at Middlebelt-I think it has all the names of those that passed away.
I remember that day because I was Pregnant with my 2nd son. 37 years ago.
Sole Surivor is a wonderful documentary idea. Besides being interesting, it brought them all together and so I hope it helps them to find peace.

Fortunately, you had a competent pilot.
I was at work not far away at Inkster & Michigan Ave. We heard the crash. We were devastated as a community. I've never forgotten that little survivor.. she has grown into a beautiful, intelligent young lady. Seeing the tattoo..man, that choked me up.
I remember we were cleaning up after my brother’s first birthday party, and we felt/heard the impact. Assumed no one was alive. We were listening to the radio when she was found. I absolutely remember Cecilia.
My heart absolutely broke for that little girl in this crash. Losing her whole family at age four. Could anything possibly be sadder? I’m so glad to see she turned out to be a healthy beautiful woman, and I pray to God that she has peace and happiness in her life 🙏🏼
I was headed from NJ to Detroit that day with my family to visit my brother who lived in a suburb of Detroit. I think we hit traffic from this and it took quite a bit longer to to arrive as we got to their house late at night. We learned from my brother what happened as the News was on when we got there. I remember watching the coverage and then learning about the single survivor. I was 13 at the time. Once in a while over the years I'd wonder how she was doing. Glad to hear she is doing well.

She looked familiar and it took me a little while to figure out why. I watched the documentary on TH-cam. It is called Sole Survivor and is from 2013, I don’t know why this channel is making it seem like something new.

I am glad she is doing so well and all the survivors from the program. She lost her Mom, Dad and brother. Her Aunt and Uncle raised her well, so many hero's in her story.
I was 11 yrs old living 40 min from metro and i still remembered her name! So obviously that little girls survival stayed with me
Beautiful video for sure. I was just a kid when this happened and I sent her a Teddy Bear. My old man worked for NW and was with Republic before the merger. He knew a few of the crew members including the Captain. I will never forget that night when the phone rang, and my dad had to get to Detroit right away because of the crash. Such a tragedy.
We had a family friend who worked at U of M hospital the time of the crash. They brought Cecelia there, and she was very well protected from all of the news people. I have always wondered how she was doing.

Same for little 9 years old Deseree in CA. She lost her entire family when their boat capsized. She was the only survivor after being in the water for 20 hours.
I always wonder about Sailor Gutzler - the 7yr old who's family plane crashed in the Kentucky woods and she walked a mile through the thick woods to a light on in a cottage for safety.
That even has always tugged at me in such a way. I am so proud of Cecelia that she has moved on with her life, and to also open up and share her story.🙏

I was on the expressway when the crash happened. We were looking for a gas station & for some reason went in the opposite direction. By the time we got back on the expressway going a short distance traffic was stopped. The smell of burning was overwhelming. My attorney's Niece was on that flight. Prayers for the young lady who survived & also for the loss of all the people.

I remember when that happened. I was 19 and coming home from a girls' vacation in Tahoe when we heard the news on the radio. I remember hearing that she was saved by the heroic action of her mother shielding her with her own body and I cried for all of them. It's my most vivid memory of the trip. This video title had me thinking that she had passed but I'm glad she didn't. As a mother, I'm sure that her mom would have been very proud and happy to see how she's grown.
I was up north in Michigan on a dirt biking trip. We were packing up the bikes to go home and had the radio on in the truck when the disc jockey came on and reported the horrible crash of a plane just outside Detroit, which is where we are from. I remember thinking of all the people and the loss of life.
The more I read the comments, the more emotional I get. So many people recounting this day and sharing their thoughts of Cecelia. Makes me appreciate how we are all connected in ways unbeknownst to us.
I was a paramedic working in Bay City the day of the crash. There was a call from the Metro area asking for the number of available critical care beds at our facility (Bay Medical Center), as well as any ambulances that could head south. Other hospitals in our area were also queried. Soon it was obvious that none of this information was not necessary.

We drove by the accident sight every Sunday on our way to church. I think if I remember correctly there were flowers, crosses there.
Still are on occasion.

This piece of work speaks beyond the veil! There is so much pressure on us all to be The One.... Spiritually and esoterically this story hits home... at the heart. The core of who we are is our soul. The old patriarchal false euro centered way has crash landed and I AM a Soul Survivor! Not just as a sole person but as an Individual UNITED IN CHRIST. May we rise in peace as the world as we knew it falls to pieces! Eye am in this world not of this world.

I grew up near Merriman and Ecorse, about 3 miles from the crash. Saw orange in the sky that night but didn’t know until later what had happened. I was 15. Time goes by so fast! We will see and meet them in the promised paradise ~ Revelation 21:4
I’m 62 and have never flown, have 5 children who fly all over the world, always stressed until I know they are back on the ground….🤷♂️…a phobia I’ve got but I don’t mind having it.

I was a student at ASU at the time of the crash. I was all signed up for classes, and was surprised to find out that one of my professors was switched out for a different one. Shortly after classes started I had heard that her father was supposed to be my instructor. I have followed her story and am so proud of her. Thank you Cecelia for sharing your story with us. Drove by the wreckage, changed my life
I was driving on I-94 heading westbound when that flight crashed right behind me…it was so violent and so close, I was in complete disbelief. Pulled over and couldn’t even catch my breath…later that night I heard about a little girl that had survived. It was a tragedy and a miracle…a horrible title to this video.
