It's quite popular among animals like big cat species, meerkats, elephants, and other social animals. Zoochosis usually happens when animals don't have enough social stimulation and/or they get bored and start to pace to the point where their health declines and it can even be fatal. One specific animal that suffered pretty bad from Zoochosis was Hugo the orca. Orcas are pod animals meaning they need other orcas to stay socially stimulated. And unfortunately Hugo was alone. So his health declined, and he inflicted wounds onto himself until he unfortunately passed. So I'm very happy to see a game bringing awareness to such a devastating thing. Great video as always, Eddie!
There was also a polar bear named Gus who became the first zoo animal ever to use Prozac, an antidepressant, after he would swim in his pool obsessively for hours. Gus was lacking stimulation and was basically so bored he was going crazy. The zookeepers did try to help though as they installed a jacuzzi and began giving him little challenge activities to keep him stimulated and his obsessive swimming tapered. It’s sad that this phenomenon happens but it is nice to know that there are zoos out there that will put in the effort to help their animals through it the best they can.
