If you splash something on yourself you want it to roll off, not absorb into your clothes and soak into your skin. Please be safe, and keep up the awesome work! Definitely one of the very best projects I've seen on TH-cam.

    cut the cylinder in half and look at it under a microscope, you can get one of those cheap USB microscopes. You might want to get a aluminum tube you can cut into a bunch of cylinders to test the particle adhesion on (inspect with microscope).

    • @jamest5149
      @jamest5149 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why? Just measure before and after and you will have the thickness without destructive testing 👍

    • @reinokotze
      @reinokotze 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James T You are imbedding particles into the plating. The distribution and particle adhesion is the important part, not the metal you are doing it with or the thickness of the plating. This is much more effected by the particles in suspension and how many, this is also effected by particle size , liquid density and agitation method.
      Thats why this process is trademarked and is very difficult to find info on. Some business have perfected it via trail and error.

    I would suggest using an expandable rubber plug to plug the bore while plastic coating. They come in many sizes. Plumbers and such use them. They expand by tightening a bolt in the center. You can also get them at auto parts stores as rubber freeze plugs.
    I use HBN powder to coat bullets for my target rifle. It let's me use more powder in my loads to shoot faster because of the reduced friction and it allows the bore to last longer and stay cleaner. It is amazingly slippery.
    I wonder if you could rig up a piston in the bad cylinder with an electric motor running the piston up and down? That way you could use it to test how many strokes it will take to wear through the plating. Just a thought.

    • @Krozhin
      @Krozhin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But running the piston through the cylinder dry would wear alot more than having one running

      Yep you plate the bullets. Pretty hard to put a barrel in a rotary tumbler. The bullets in turn deposit HBN onto the barrel. There is a whole industry devoted to it. There are several coatings you can use. I have used molybdenum and hbn the hbn has a better friction coefficient and is much cleaner to work with. Moly works well but is messy and when it gets wet it can form a corrosive substance.

      @@2STROKESTUFFING It is also much easier to calcutate the area that you are platting and hence deduce the voltage and amperage requirements so you can achieve the hardness you are trying to achieve. Its the area of a cylinder, minus the ports surf. area more or less..
      A shop that I know of around here, just dip the whole cylinder in plastidip, let it air dry, then use a hone to clean up the bore itself and just that, so that it is the only part not covered in plastidip. After the plating is done you can just submerge the whole cylinder in acetone, which I am pretty sure dissolves the plastidip, without causing no harm to the nicasil. A quick couple of baths later and you save yourself a lot of "peeling" time..

    What a fantastic project you have going on here. Just a few things for your consideration. When I was building high performance 2 smokers for my sons MX bikes a retired speedway engine builder helping us ground back the thinner port bridges very slightly in the bore before plating. His reasoning that they expand more thus creating friction and destroy rings. If your testing shows plating wear in these areas it may be worth considering this when machining the bores next time. Also I've just started looking into building a turbo manifold for my car and although I do not fully understand yet there seems to be some magic numbers merging in fluid dynamics, those being 15˚ and 25˚. I noticed your inlet fed in at 25˚ but I think I seen you exhaust fed out at 20˚. If your goal is no reached it and room constrictions allow it may be worth speaking with some of those much more knowledgeable people you have conversed with to discuss this possibility.

    • @2STROKESTUFFING
      @2STROKESTUFFING  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I'll keep an eye on it. This usually is a problem with exhaust bridges though, due to the heat. My design has non.
      You're probably referring to the transfer ports as "inlet", they are at different angles(A25,B10,C45 if I remember correctly) to hopefully get good scavenging.
      The exhaust duct is angled 25° downwards, but the outer flanks are at 20° - otherwise they would penetrate the A-transfer duct roofs.

    Honing will be hard. That is for sure. I do have diamond or cbn stones finding project for Sunnen's ck-2035a going on. There is many but cost effective way is needed. Electroless plating would give quite even thickness. Electroless for NiC is available, just waiting for manufacturers opinion about using it for cylinders.

      @2STROKESTUFFING  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably! Electroless should work very well!
