- In this video, I show you how to properly manage your addons using the add-on.xml method in Prepar3D. This means if you have to reinstall Prepar3D, you wont have to reinstall everything :)

Hi Matt, great to have you back with us and thank you for all the hard work that you put in to these vids and streams.
One question on this vid;
I already have any number of add-ons installed into my SIM, in the normal manner, usually sitting in the 'core', although some recent ones have been installed into the/an add-on folder.
Is it possible to move stuff out of the 'core' and into the add-on dir, then ref using a 'xml' (?), or do these add-ons need to be re-installed to the add-on folder then create the xml's to load (or not, atcmb)
I am guessing that just moving them might screw up the registry (?), thereby stopping future automated updates as our chap below here suggests.

I was waiting for this video for awhile. I formatted my pc and reinstalled p3d and was waiting to install scenery until p3d might come up with v4.5 but couldn’t wait to fly to other places other then Orbx scenery. Saved this videos for later watching.
Tremendous tutorial. I will definitely try to structure the folders this way next time I reinstall P3D

Sorry Matt. What about Orbx scenery’s (openLCs etc) would these go into the default P3D folder ? Thx
My P3d has developed a bug of sorts , all the run way textures are messed up , houses are appearing on the airport and the sea has turned yellow . I have tried migrating the orbx scenery , uninstalling both orbx and a fresh install of p3d but it won’t go away. I even tried going back to p3d 4.4 . Please any help would be appreciated
Hello matt question regarding THE FS some say to louck the frame on 30-40 FS in NVIDIA inspector BUTTER than to keep it unlimited is that right or ? And 2nd VS and treble buffering if it is on in P3d should be off in nvidia inspector or in p3d off in nvidia on !!! Really confused 🤷♂️ abut all that i need one way to fallow that all
Hi Matt. No need for BVAi folder if you have FLAi I do not think! & I use Lorby Addon Organizer to layer the sceneries correctly like all airports above Orbx. The Organizer adds an entry in each add-on.xml called Layer and a number.

Hi matt .. when I click options in the main start screen the sim don't response then it leave automaticly .. what should I do ?
Helpful video, thank you. Do you have a "dummy" install so that you catch where installers are placing things? It seems like any update to 3rd party stuff would make new work for you. I do like the method and will try it out.
Could you do a video on your PC setup and what you would recommend for people looking to get back into simming? I'm not even sure if I should go for XP11 or P3D and a need to assemble an entire PC system from scratch ... a video of this sort would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Matt, thanks for the video. Just wondering how to go about moving some of the 'heavier' addons (specifically payware aircraft) out of the P3D root folder. Is it really just as simple as moving them out or will I face other issues relating to the Windows registry? Thanks!
Morning Matt, have you tried the add-on xml for majestic Dash 8. I get it coming up as an add on but no aircraft are on the vehicle list.?

I noticed in your settings you had FXAA turned ON. If I turn on FXAA my textures look blurred using a 4K monitor
you get 60fps with this?! I have a 2070 but paired with an i5-9400f... but 32gb ram. How do you get 60 in the pmdg 777? I get 30. Please help!

Hey guys i have got real Problem cause of those addons i am new at this sim i have installed P3dv4 before 3 months untill know i cant see my addons i mean when i open the sim i cant see my addons i want to buy GA aircrafts from a2a but how can i buy if i cant see my addons .

Hi! Did you change some xml or configuration files?
Otherwise if you mean actual modification add-ons and not aircraft, they are usually stored in the directory "Documents\Prepar3Dv4 Add-Ons".
Those add-ons can be selected in the P3D launcher.
If there was no change in add-on xml files, it is very unusual that installed aircraft are not visible in your aircraft selection menu.
Aircraft by default are stored in the "Prepar3D (in this case v4)\SimObjects\Airplanes".
You can try and run P3D as administrator and see if this fixes the issue of disappeared add-ons.

Because xplane has only a couple study level aircraft.
This is a good video, but there are some nuances that should really be mentioned. I'm trying to build a setup where I can install P3D v4 on a formatted machine, fresh, and simply copy add-on.xml files into the my documents p3d addons directory and it simply adds / loads the lot. Some aircraft addons make this quite difficult, so I may well not bother with some addon aircraft as it can be tricky, but that still means I'm pretty much just installing aircraft, liveries (which you can largely automate in a similar way) and orbx.
But with a blank install, you'll need to deal with SODE and things like GSX, that put their files in other places, such as the 'appdata' folders.
Another thing to be aware of, FlyTampa like a number of other scenery developers, have applications that manage updates, seasonal textures etc. and to the best of my knowledge these management applications rely on the file structure the addon installs into. For example, all FlyTampa scenery needs to be in one folder for the FlyTampa-Configurator.exe to work. Same with the Flightbeam Manager FSDG-Scenery Configurator, etc. Also you need to be careful with things like the couatl updater, and SODE as well. This means if you strip them out and separate them, these configurators won't work anymore, so you need to create a similar structure outside of the P3D directory to allow this to be managed. Sceneries that are really 'standalone' are easy to strip out and create addon xml's for, some you have to be a bit careful how you strip out the scenery from the root folder of P3D.
I've started to do this, some simply falls into the 'too much work for too little gain' category, but with the 40 - 50 or so sceneries that I've managed to get to work properly using this method, it'll save me literally hours of installation faff.

Hi Craig, I am no expert on this, but lookig to setup my P3Dv4 along the same lines. Just a thought concerning your comment above; if add-ons are installed to the add-on dir then surely there is a registry entry that tracks that location (?), therefore, would not any further updateers and other bits know where to find this stuff? If this type of add-on was installed under one dir, then I am sure that I have read that there is a way to present these types of add-ons to P3D as a 'Package', would this work?

In some cases I think registry entries are made, but many addons don’t do this, there are ways to sort it out but it can be a bit trial and error... all I would say is take your time and do it step by step... Testing as you go... it in some cases simply moving an addon folder and creating add-on.xml for it is not sufficient if you want to maintain functionality that you have now... e.g. fly tampa configuration app or Couatl update... etc..

Just adding my vote for a request for an XP11 version of this clever tutorial (many thanks!!). I've been using a similar XML approach for add-on *aircraft* in P3D (see www.nzfsim.org/fsx-p3d-tweaks/add-ons-outside-p3d-root/) but never got around to re-hashing my scenery, as I use Simstarter for that (call me lazy, but don't call me Shirley LOL)!
