It’s heartbreaking to see what Gyan has had to endure. In many African and Middle Eastern countries, people can be quick to label someone a failure if they don’t fully deliver on the high expectations placed on them-even years later. They forget the incredible moments he gave Ghana. Gyan scored Ghana's first-ever World Cup goal in their debut match against the Czech Republic in 2006, a lightning-fast strike just 68 seconds into the game-one of the quickest goals in World Cup history. They forget how pivotal he was during Ghana's historic run to the 2010 quarterfinals, scoring three goals and playing with unmatched heart and determination. Instead, all they remember is the missed penalty, which broke him to the point of lashing out and saying things he might later regret. This same man made history with his teammates, leading Ghana to their first-ever World Cup and delivering performances that united a nation and inspired millions. I don’t blame Gyan for losing his composure-prolonged abuse can push anyone to their breaking point. But let’s not forget: he’s done more for Ghana and football as a whole than any of the lowlives tearing him down on social media could ever dream of.
Well said my friend , the only people bullying him are lowly assholes that got nothing going on in their lives but bringing other people down to have a semblance of a fake satisfaction in their pathetic lives...
I once had asamoah gyan become Dortmunds top league goalscorer of all time in FM08, going up to like 2022, by the end he was 35 years old playing on his own with all the regens
Canadian here. When Davies missed the pen against Belgium it sucked, but I never once thought that he shouldn't take the next one. He's our guy. He's taking the pen, no question. Just like Gyan in 2010
Yup that's most peoples reactions, I felt the same when Saka et al missed in the final, but the 1% that are vile cretins are much louder and unfortunately it's very human to internalise the negativity than it is any positivity.
Hes the guy but hes also not an attacking player. He's only scored 2 penalties in his life, Johnathon David has scored 29. Another reason Herdman was out of his depth
Ghanaian here (at least by blood and experience). General consensus is that he’s still an all time great for us, but that moment obviously still lives rent free in his head and in the head of many other Ghanaians that experienced it at the time. Even as Ghana’s been pretty bad recently, he’s always been the “I told you so”, “that’s what you get”, “you don’t know what you have until it’s gone” kinda guy, because along with the Ayew brothers some Ghanaians felt he overstayed (More so the Ayew brothers cos Gyan seemed ok with staying on the bench at times and eventually retired).
Ghanaian here, another thing to add to this is Gyan lost his friend Castro D'destroyer in 2014 mysteriously at sea(he is said to have drowned, but officially he is a missing person) and some people were blaming Gyan for that within the midst of all this going on. Its a sad situation and I hope he is able to make it through this.
I remember watching Gyan at Sunderland. If he and Darren Bent had stayed at the club we could've had a scary attacking duo. With the likes of Sessegnon, Richardson and Zenden whipping the ball in, we could've pushed for Europa in 2010-11, but instead we got 10th.
My favorite Football Manager save of all time is Sunderland in FM11. I decided to play 4-4-2, signing the fastest players I could find. The counterattacking with Gyan as one of the two forwards (when healthy) was something to behold.
Gyan showed balls of steel after that miss by taking their first penalty almost directly after and scoring. Baggio missed nobody is going to convince me he was anything but a baller at USA 94
Some people really undersell it by saying he was carrying the hopes of Ghana. The truth is he was carrying the hopes of the entire continent. The whole of Africa was watching and rooting for him.
@dannytallmage2971 that was the World Cup hosted in South africa and was the first time that an African country since inception. Everyone thought that Cote d'ivoire or Nigeria would do well as they had premier league level talent so on paper they should do well. South africas football team has been horrific since 1996 so it really speaks volumes about the state that France was in for us to beat them. Nonetheless, we went out on gold difference and Cote d'ivoire also stumbled at the group stages. The only African team that was doing well and could keep their heads up was Ghana. Their performances were incredible and epitomised what a lot of African football has been about historically. Pace, power, work ethic and skill. As the went further after the group stages their backing grew and all the African fans that had their teams knocked out (including the home fans) started supporting Ghana as they genuinely had a shot at getting a medal at a minimum. In the quarters, they were against Uruguay (who beat SA in the group stages. the match was marred by Suarez diving for a pen and getting the SA keeper sent off while the game was 1 nil. They went on to lose 3 nil and like i said they went out on goal difference) so there was not only support for Ghana but support against Uruguay. Lastly if Ghana went through, not only would it have been a bit of "justice" wrt Uruguay, it would also be the first time that an African team makes it to the semis of a world cup (at that time). They went toe to toe against Uruguay and should have won were it not for Suarez cheating by handling on the line when the Uruguay keeper was beaten. So the narrative was set as Suarez was sent off and got his just desserts and one kick off the game deals out justice, the better performing team goes through, and the first African country makes it to the world cup final. EVERYONE was watching. Everyone was hoping and also expecting. He had the whole continent on his shoulders and hit the frame of the goal. I was in the streets when South africa beat France and they were wild. This would have been a celebration for the ages if that goal went in
@@dannytallmage2971 Because no African country had ever reached a semifinal in a World Cup before and Ghana were one penalty away from making history and doing so by beating Uruguay, Gyan had the chance to do so had he scored the penalty.
@@Kuromori-v9z so? Only Concacaaf team to ever make a final was US in 1930 but you won’t see me cheering for Mexico to make a semi final. Pretty embarrassing record for Africa though lmao. Even silly Asians have a made a semi final.
@@dannytallmage2971 First off the US have never made it to a final of the World Cup, the final in 1930 was between Uruguay and Argentina, which the former won 4-2. And second, gee, I don't know, maybe the Africans have a different culture than you lot? It's not like African countries have access to the best facilities to train like in Europe or South America. And those "silly Asians" that reached the semifinal did so by performing broad daylight robberies against Italy and Spain, so not exactly something to brag about if we're being honest.
Best guy in the team should take the penalty. Yeah somebody please tell that to Neymar who decided to take the 5th penalty that never happened and eliminated us a few year back 😂 It was so bizarre
I thought the hate was towards suarez because he disingeneously caused all of this , blaming Asamoa Gyan is the stupidest course of action one could take , shame on ghaneans who do this , it's straight up evil.
The one thing America has done well that keeps poppin up again and again (atleast in my life) is the normalisation of therapy. In many countries its extremely stigmatised and many more is not even an option. It seems such an obvious thing to you Sir Zealand but to many it wouldn't even enter their mind. You are right though! Great vid as always. :)
I’ve noticed that in older movies and shows (even from like 15-20 years ago) someone will suggest a therapist and they’ll go like “A SHRINK?! YOU THINK I NEED A SHRINK?!” like Jesus Christ

I believe he is infereing that Asamoah Gyan was such a star for his team he took every pen no matter what, and that Alfonso Davies is also that star for Canada and will also take all their pens, but as of the last few years since that world cup its been David taking them. Just need Zealand to realize Canada isnt just 1 superstar LB, but a solid roster with underrated attacking potential
@JohnJMcEh I think he is referencing that Alfonso was the star for Canada the last time they had a pen in a WC and thus was expected to take the pen, which he missed, a pretty similar situation to Gyan. Jonathan David was also in that match, but didn't take the pen, the fact he takes them now isn't relevant in the context of the WC, which is what Gyan's rant was about.
People still talk shit about Neymar because he didnt take the first pen in the shootouts in 2022 vs Croatia and thus ended up not even getting to shoot. And people are right to do so*. Edit: clarification

For me it's an exaggeration saying he was by far the best of Ghana's team, because Andre Ayew was even better in my opinion. But he lacked maybe goals to become a real great player.
