Don your videos on this Kenwood are very much appreciated! I only recently bought the Kenwood and I am still learning. Thanks for adding to these videos. W4CRS Jere Whitehouse In Montgomery Alabama
@Don Arnold I really appreciate this. I've had so much trouble with GPS and APRS with D-Star. I still don't have it working on the 5100a. You're a national ham radio treasure!
Video assumes you know what the options mean and why you would set them. I am a bit more of a newbie and still trying to figure out what all the options and features are all about.
Where is the transcript mentioned at the beginning of the video? Can't seem to find it, video goes too quickly so it would be nice to follow with a transcript.
It would be nice to know how to program/add a repeater with offset and tone manually, without a computer, Don. There is nothing my my provided manual that explains how to do that.
Don I continue coming back to this video and I am confused now. Early in the video you talk about exiting a menu by "doing a quit key" is what it sounds like, but I cannot figure out where the key is or what you are doing in the video. I have even slowed down the video to half speed, and it sounds like "quit" key but I cannot figure it out. Thanks! W4CRS
Don, thanks very much for your videos. They have been immensely helpful to me in setting up my TH-D74, and getting started for the first time using Dstar. I was wondering if you could answer two questions for me regarding power? There are warnings about using the radio and transmitting while on the wallwort charger. I am wondering if it is ok to use the radio for both receive and transmit while it is plugged in using the Kenwood TH-3J car charger assembly? It seems that it is. The other related question is that can you plug that car charger DC source in while the radio is on, or should you first power it off, connect the car charger, and then turn on? The other question I have is whether it might be ok to use the PG-2W fused cable connected to a Bioenno LiFePO battery for extended portable operation?
Hi Don! I’m torn between this and the Yaesu FT2DR. I like the waypoint feature of the Yaesu. What’s the answer of Kenwood to that, or is there at least a workaround to doing something like that feature? Thank you.
Hi Don, Thanks, first of all for your excellent videos on the TH D74 which I just purchased 3/17/2018. I’ve been reading online that it is not possible to setup this radio to report positions to aprs.fi due to the lack of DPRS support by Kenwood. Do you know if this is a fact? If not, can you do a video on the settings necessary to have the radio report (via GPS) real-time position for the radio? Thanks, John McKee KF5YKP
How can I get my location to show up on the display when I transmit, usually is is right below the URL line? I can only get my call sign and name to show.
Thanks for asking as I had the same question. What doesn't seem to come with the radio, or available anywhere, is an explanation of the buttons. I was trying to do settings and assumed the ABCD around the screen indicated what button to use for what purpose, but that didn't work either.
@@ellenbarnett2428 I am not a beginner and I didn't know what he meant by a Quick Key. If he pressed the PTT, that just happens to be the PTT button, not a quick key. Only once in the beginning did it appear he had a finger or thumb, what ever it was, on or near the PTT.
A simple question. I'm trying to program my ThD 74 A for 147.03 Mhz with a negative offset and PL tone of 88.5. Can you walk me through it please I'm having no success.
I can’t get the programmable software to connect. Some said you need to take memory card out of the radios and place it in the computer. What next??? Thanks. K0EVA. 73
I've thought seriously about purchasing this radio but a friend of mine says that DMR is the only way to go and that it's more popular. If this is true then why don't any of the big three companies (Yaesu, Kenwood, Icom) make a DMR radio???
David Branscome because dmr has become extremely slow to adopt in the amateur radio space. It’s still much more targeted toward the business market. Until it becomes (if it becomes...) more popular amongst the amateur population, I doubt it will be widely adopted.
Oh my.... first time setting this up and am so lost. Stuck on KISS 12 whatever that means and can’t get the radio to even go to menu. Frustrating. Good video but so quick I couldn’t keep up
Very deceptive title to this video. You should have called it "what I like to do with the DH-74a" or "setting up APRS." APRS is not the first thing that most people want to do with this radio. I wound up going back and un-doing all the changes you suggested.
Way too fast. The Keys keeping changing names. He often covers the keys with his hand, so you can't tell what he's doing. Seems like good info, but poorly presented

Just got my Kenwood Th-D 74 today. Your video is appreciated.

The "Quick Key" referred to is the PTT button.
Thanks

Don, Great video but there is no link at the end of the video for the transcript. Where to I find it?
Thanks Don, cant find the link to the transcript though. Is it still available?
Where is the "transcript" that you promise in the beginning of the video?

Great video. Let me ask you. Is it possible to do spilt frequency on different band on the thd74a? For satellite work.
does not do duplex reckoned the TH-D72
How can I get my location to show up on the display when I transmit, usually is is right below the URL line? I can only get my call sign and name to show.
This is fantastic, thanks, Don.
I am sure I am overlooking it, but where is the quick key you reference on the HT?
I believe it’s the transmit switch.

Hi Don, do you know if it is ok to use KSC-25 rapid charger on D74?
yes, considering it is listed as an accessory for the radio.

After Menu 506 B-Band. You say press A/B and enter 144.390. I can’t find how to enter. Anyone? KF0DAQ. Thank, Gary. Semper Fi

Hi, It is the PTT, push to talk button
Right ... because the first thing anyone who buys a D-74 wants to do is program the radio for APRS.
Don, this was very, very helpful. Thank you! de KM4ZSB
