I remember thinking back in 2020 that one nice thing about the parks being closed for the pandemic is that the imagineers finally have time to properly renovate all the rides, especially Indiana Jones. Couldn't have been more wrong 😅
Too many layoffs when Covid hurt their profits. Disney refused to give them proper pay, so many either left, got laid off, or died from Covid...😥 2020 was the hardest year for a really long time
I went to Disney recently since 2018 and man. So many neglected animatronic. Pirates is another one. So many missing pieces like the cats the donkey, the dog!
I knew a maintenance guy who worked on the ride and he said they had to reduce the intensity cuz the vehicles were destroying themselves. They actually had to rebuild all the cars at one point!
Oof, that makes sense though. The motion was violent! Like, it was genuine thrill ride that felt way more extreme than it actually was. That couldn't have been good for those massive, heavy vehicles.
Some insight from someone who worked at the park, and best friend currently works Indy/Trains/Jungle/Tiki: -generator in the queue is because the entire thing (jeep from the movie, generator, etc.) is all rusted out and filled with spiders. Speed was never reduced, that's just what it does now -Missing news reel is because of covid; they wanted to keep people moving as fast as possible through the indoor queues, so they cut out the other reels to keep guests moving, as they don't have to watch the entire reel, only the relevant safety info, per policy -wall of mirrors/chamber of destiny was due to seismic damage on the building. The mechanism that allows the room to rotate around the false doors, giving the illusion of different chambers deattached from the "inner" room (the rotating part), and cannot be repaired without removing substantial portions of the building, original themeing, etc. The wall of mirrors changed position to draw less attention to the broken effect. This wasn't the case of poor maintenance, but the unfortunate frequent seismic activity of socal (Believe me, I want this fixed as much as everyone else, but it's about as likely as the yeti) -the ice machine caused so much leaking and rotting and mold issues, you don't want it back I promise -Fair point on the door slamming effect, I'd like to see that make a return -I've heard rumors that the bridge effect is a known issue, they can't fix it due to safety concerns/lack of adequate fall protection for the cast that would have to fix it -Fluffy is old (the snake) be nice to her :'( In all seriousness though, yeah, she's notorious with the CMs. She's not completely inoperable, but she went down enough that until she's fixed, she'll be static. The closure wasn't kind to her. (Fun fact, you can hear her from the CM bathroom, since it's right underneath the snake) -I think the lava smoke effects were less from a fog machine, and more from the vastly larger fire effects that used to be there. I think they were removed for guest comfort/energy consumption concerns -I don't even have to watch the part about the rat room to know whatever you say is fair criticism, that shit sucks -Same with the boulder effect. -Hey, one time I heard Sallah say something other "if you drank too much from the fountain of youth, we will be happy to assist you with strollers", and it was post-covid too! Keep in mind, this ride runs on Windows 95, haha. They're doing their best. You're not wrong about any of this, btw, I just thought I'd give some insight as to why some of the things are the way they are
Its always good to hear more insight, the best way to learn is to keep an open mind. I was presenting information I gathered from Disney Fans and retired maintenance crew on Indiana Jones so it would be near impossible for me to be specific with information while also getting everything correct. This video was more of a documentation of things that are broken, not so much of a call to action for Disney to fix it. I understand that most of the things in the videos are either near impossible to bring back or were operational nightmares to deal with.
@@ChriswithaK for sure! I’m doing the same as you, spreading knowledge around from cast members, haha. I had no idea about the onboard audio tracking system, that’s really cool!
Too pathetic to run a drain from an ice machine set to a sensor? Didn't take into account the engineering it takes to mame a rotating building work? Pathetic, this is what you get with diversity and women.
It's 90's tech. I don't think they manufacture ALL of the parts that ran this ride in the 90's. For example, there is a new snake head seen on property outside of the Indy show building....patience, patience :)
@@dfair I'm excited to see the new snake. I remember in 2010 I was backstage and curious about a building north of Frontierland, the worker saw me peeking in and offered to explain what the building was. It was a fully equipped machine shop, he explained that they could fabricate their own parts for equipment and animatronics that were decades old. In 2015 that building was one of many such maintenance shops that were demolished to make way for Galaxys Edge.
I hope they have restored this ride to its original amazing experience. The same goes for pirates of the Caribbean ride. At the high price it cost to enter Disneyland these days, they should deliver the same amazement we used to get by paying only about $35 to enter the park. My next visit to Disneyland I figure it’s going to cost me about $250 for the day which doesn’t include food but does include a fast pass to get past a lot of the lines
It's the American equivalent of Space Mountain at Disneyland Paris. What was once an incredible adventure (literally its opening saved eurodisney) is now a poorly kept shell of its former self, with most of the effects broken and a hideous star wars overlay
One of the first things I’ve noticed right after Mara in the chamber of destiny there is a fake turn into a little halllway with treasures. They completely took that out and it’s bearly even noticeable. As a kid that part added so much mystery and where that one path leads and no one seems to even care or notice it but I’ve always noticed it and definitely noticed it when they practically took it out by spreading up the turn into the chamber of torment :( I hope they add back the treasure
I'm friends with someone who works at indy and here is what I know from this list. The bamboo pole in the queue was installed a few days ago and is working again. The gates of doom behind indy were changed by WDI and are unable to be changed back without authorization. The ice machine caused mold, rust, and various other issues and will not be brought back. The bridge ropes were very high maintenance and have been down for a few years for redesign. They should be brought back soon. Fluffy(the snake) was removed in November of 2021 due to various design issues and will be reinstalled during the refurbishment in 2 weeks. There were a lot of issues with manufacturing parts for the figure that caused the time delay. The lava pit effect was a fine water mist and it created tons of mold and was dangerous for the cast members. It is currently down for redesign. The audio issues in the dart room has been an issue for a while and they're currently looking to implement new systems for it. The rolling ball and moving room has been having a ton of issues. The moving room has been off for a few years now but is now starting to work again as of 2 weeks ago. The only issue is it faults out a lot during the day due to a new control system in place. The same can be said about the rolling ball. However the ball was only off for a few weeks about a month ago. Just to note, there have been a lot of people saying this complaint, "disneyland was closed for a long time during the covid pandemic and the maintenance crews had a lot of time to get everything working properly" The issue with this statement was that all maintenance crews for the park were furloughed for the majority of covid. There was no one at the parks because disneyland was not deemed an essential business because it was entertainment only. So basically everything was shut off for a very long period of time and the cast members only had a short amount of time to get everything ready for reopening. Machinery and systems do not like to work after being shut down for long periods of time. Especially when it runs 16-17 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just remember that
Thank you! I get so annoyed when people say they "should have fixed the rides during the closure," as though the people working there were somehow immune to the pandemic shutdown. I'm glad someone else gets it!
That explains why we didn’t see the boulder in early January when we went on the ride. Indiana Jones was always my favorite ride. It was the biggest disappointment this trip. Hadn’t been on it since 2010. Glad to hear they are working on fixing some things. Hope they can figure it out. The line experience is still super cool but that repetitive safety video is quite annoying.
Im heartbroken to hear this, i went as a kid pre-2010 several times. I had to close my eyes for the snake part every time! I felt like it got inches from my face. I remember it feeling "off" while I was there in 2014ish but chalked it up to remembering my childhood too fondly. I Knew it ;-;
This ride was my favorite ride, even though it terrified the shit outta me because of the Cobra. I legit got into snakes and reptiles after I overcame my fear of this ride. I was on this ride since the late 90s up til 2009 or 10. I now know I will never EVER get to ride this ride again. Shame......Disney can never be forgiven their sins now after what they did to the snake.
As I learn more and more about the current state of Temple of the Forbidden Eye, it’s a real shame on how this ride’s status is currently in and has obviously seen better days. This also made me realize on why the Oriental Land Company wanted to change/not use some effects when they were creating Temple of the Crystal Skull in Tokyo DisneySea
They recently removed the bamboo post in the spike room in the queue so you can’t pull on it to trigger the spikes and sound effects. The ride has been in poor condition for years.
I was in Disneyland a few days ago and when I walked through the spike room, I kept thinking that there was supposed to be something you pull on somewhere but I couldn’t find it! Glad to hear I’m not crazy
Something I think Indy could greatly benefit from is the fireball effect from Tokyo’s version of the ride. It would make a great replacement for that horrible rat-branch projection thing right before the dart room.
@@tennojiberri Yup. The projection is supposed to show rats/mice running across some vines or a branch of some sort. Not a spider web. Though a spider web is actually kind of a cool idea.
What this video doesn't really demonstrate too well, is that the rat-branch projection is directly over the track. In it's hey day, the effect made you feel like you were going to hit your head on an actual branch and made you duck just before you pass right through the projection. A fire effect directly in the line of the guests might be a bit.... concerning.
Disney should definitely fix the changing door illusion, the gates of doom illusion, the falling bugs, the bridge effect, the snake animatronic, the smoke under the bridge, the blow dart timing, and the rock illusion. Should probably remove the pointless mice on a log, too. The ice machine will be too expensive to maintain, so I get that, but this video is great. Send this to Bob Iger and give this thing the $10M renovation it deserves.
Rode this ride last week and I was pleasantly surprised when parts of the cave roof started falling on us like it did when it first opened. ...But it wasn't special effects; it was pieces of the actual fiberglass roof.
Honestly, the rat projection and the skeleton always looked cheep and something out of a carnival ride in this otherwise amazing attraction. I would not mind a complete overhaul of that section.
Rode this again a year ago. Can confirm it is a shell of what it once was. Used to be the best dark ride of all time that felt way faster than it actually is.
Even in its current state. Its still the greatest dark ride of all time IMO, all thanks to Baxter and the creative minds of the past. Hopefully in this refurbishment, the ride gets it’s needed TLC that it deserves.
@@Maverick19977 I'm sorry bud, but absolutely not. That honor goes to Rise of The Resistance. In its original form, sure I can see that, maybe, in it's current state I'd even take Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway over it. I'll take Forbidden Journey over Indy, even Spiderman at Islands of Adventure. Oh, Radiator Springs Racers, Tower of Terror, our Tower in FL, not the other one that closed. Indy needs help taking it's crown back. Technology has moved past it unfortunately and there are better dark rides out there now. If it could be restored then yes I'd say Rise of The Resistance isn't even quite on the same level, only just though. This means with the original motion programming on Indy as well, cos that really tied it all together and set it apart from the others. It really feels like a shell of what it once was and that isn't a good thing. The new effects look cool, especially bringing the 1st idol scene to life in ways never seen before, but even still, the projection mapping and other new lighting and effects kinda takes away the magic of the original a bit. Like you have to understand, this thing got me into thrill rides and over my fear of coasters as a kid, way back before Rocket Rods even made it's debut, and i love the Indy films. Especially the 2nd one. I was obsessed with it. There was nothing like it. Now it is no doubt, unique but nah, it's far from the best anymore. It left me looking dumb when I took my friend from Jersey to Disney for the 1st time and was like yo you gotta ride Indy, it's the coolest dark ride ever, and then we got current Indy. The janky, tamed, version. Hey at least it's not that dinosaur ride though. Still way better than that thing. Hopefully after the next refurb it will be restored to what it once was.
I too rode it around a year ago. Something didn't feel right about it. Like it was duller. I didn't realize all the changes it went through. I did for sure remember the video in the line. I was like I could have swore there was more video but it was just the safety video on repeat.
The other main set of effects that I havent seen you mention thus far (im at 7:21) are the dozens of disabled fog machines that were in the pits next to ride vehicles in the lightning room, on the bridge, and behind and below the stone face of Mara in the lava pit. These not working really gives away the fact that there is a lot of empty space in the building. Kinda kills the ride IMO.
I did partially bring it up, but as I stated at the end of the video, I only covered about 60% of all the broken things in the ride. I didn’t want the video to become tedious so I only put in the major effects that I personally think negatively affect the ride
I don't have experience with this ride, but I can easily tell you that most rides at WDW suffer from a complete lack of maintenance as well. Its depressing what they haven't done/done to Spaceship Earth.
I've gone to WDW since 1975, when it cost $7.95 for the whole day, but wouldn't go anymore, until they lower the prices & spend more on maintenance! I never even heard of this ride, but it looks great, if it works!
This is my mother's favorite ride at Disneyland. I remember first riding it when it was new and the line was about three hours long, stretching out to where the old jeep used to sit outside the Tiki Room. Remember when they gave out paper cards to translate the coded inscriptions on the walls? Long before there was a Disney Play app, my mom took notes on a yellow legal pad while we waited in the queue to try to translate everything. As a child I was terrified of skeletons so I did not do well on that ride for a number of years. My poor dad had to wait outside with me by the ride exit where we would heckle the Jungle Cruise. I love the ride now, so I'm sad to hear about all the things that don't work. My tradition now when I ride Indy is to yell "Clutch! Clutch!" at our 'driver' every time the truck stalls.
my mom was there on opening day too!!! She received the translator card too, but she lost it years ago sadly... she also was there for splash mountain opening day as well! and that ride is in an even worse state compared to this one...
I appreciate this video more than you realize. Being a former Magic Key Holder I was going all the time and this was the first and last ride for me of the day since I would stay open to close every time. Another effect in a way that seems to be defaulted now is when Salah is announcing the seat belt check. He used to say more than one phrase, including when the car is dispatched but now in both scenarios, the seat belt check and dispatch platform, he only says when thing during both which I noticed. Older soundtracks on TH-cam have him saying more than one dialogue.
Indiana Jones was really rough last time we went to Disney. We broke down several times on our trip, once for about 5 minutes right in front of the boulder. All the lights cut out and they turned the cars off momentarily so we sat there for a while just waiting. You pointed out things I didn’t even realize were missing and now it’s really clear to see
Indy’s sister attraction at DAK (Dinosaur) has just as many broken/replaced effects. Very sad that these attractions are a shell of their original selves.
Not only Indiana Jones’ Adventure, but also its twin, Dinosaur are both in awful condition. Its so sad to see another effect broken each time i ride Dinosaur. I hope Disney shows it some love and gives it a refurb as well.
tbh i think this ride was representative of the peak of theme park experiences when it first opened, it pushed the limits of ambition like no other attraction. it’s really depressing to see how Disney has let it fall into such disarray - i have never been on this ride, but dude, for a ride that opened in the 90’s, it’s still the pinnacle of themed experiences with working effects!!! every time i learn more about this ride i am blown away by how immersive and detailed it is! idk why Disney would let such a perfect representation of what they can do fall into disarray.
I was there when this opened back in the 90s. The most disappointing thing is Harrison Ford declining to do the voice for the ride (counter - awesome that Sallah is there!). Kind of lame on his part (maybe they can get him to do it for the refresh). Part of the line experience for me was translated the hieroglyphics with decoder cards (I used to have all of the different versions, lost them at some point, grr). It was very cool. But that ended when they split the line for fast passes. The last time I was there 7-yrs ago, you breezed through the beginning part of the temple, so you don't really have a chance to take in the surroundings. One time back in the 90s, I stayed in the line for over 3-hours translating everything, and I made a temple diary with everything in it. Later a buddy and I would dress up as explorers and act as tour guides for the folks around us in line. The best part was the poll holding up the ceiling, I'd tell everyone not to touch it, then would "by accident" and my buddy and I would pretend to struggle with it to prop the ceiling back up. It was great fun. Those were the days for sure...
The supposed story behind Ford's absence from the rider is he agreed to record his voice for it on the condition he didn't have to read or do anything that'd be used only for advertising the ride / park. Disney agreed to this, but there was a mix-up and, depending on which version of the story you read, he was sent either scripts for both the ride and ads, or only the scripts for the ads. He was so angry about this he refused to do it at all. However, one thing that you might find interesting, while John Rhys-Davies is obviously in the film footage, he's _not_ been credited with voicing the ride. A voice actor named Bob Joles is officially credited with voicing Sallah for the ride. I'm not sure if anyone knows if all of the voice work is done by Joles, or if Rhys-Davies did some and Joles did the rest. It's surprisingly common for voice impersonators to do voice work even on movies if lines need to be re-recorded. For example Jim Hanks, Tom Hanks' brother, will often do the ADR or non-movie voice work for characters he plays. And supposedly Dan Castellaneta (of Homer Simpson fame) did some ADR for Robin Williams after Williams was impressed by Castellaneta's impersonation of him as the Genie for the second Aladdin movie (which Williams refused to voice as he had just sued Disney for using his voice in advertising the first movie, a suit which he won).
I remember this ride. My family went to Disneyland for the 40th anniversary and when the park opened EVERYONE went directly to the Indiana Jones ride as it was the hot new thing. I loved it, scared the hell out of me. I was so shaken I left my camera in the jeep afterward XD but the ride staff were super cool and retrieved it for me.
Former CM here: I went to DLR a couple days ago and noticed how all the little details throughout the park seem to be in poor repair. Light bulbs out at Haunted Mansion, floating head glitching on mansion, clothes not fully covering the animatronics on Pirates, trash everywhere in the esplanade…. The overall quality of DLR/DCA has dropped dramatically it’s so disappointing. My suspicion is staffing… not enough hands to adequately keep the place clean (custodial) and lack of 3rd shift maintenance and WDI that can walk the attractions at night to notice the “little things”
I can tell you the one effect that's never coming back is the ice rock machine due to the damage it did to make that affect. Sadly that affect is gone for good. For the rotating doors I remember seeing a video of a cast member talking about how the parts they need to fix it are no longer available or cost to much to get that's why they never went back to it but to be honest I like the projection doors more. As for the snake this one annoys me! The main reason the snake slowed down wasn't because of age it was because people complained it was to scary so Disney gave in and made him slower to where he no longer jumped out at you. They are fixing the snake and I hope they return him back to his full working mode that we all loved.
Couldn't they add a projection for the ice breaking? And just have it replay it self for each veachle? And just add sound to it? Or even just somehow simulate it.
This ride was amazing 10 years ago, but now it is an ashamed disaster. Disney needs to get their shit together and fix this ride as effectively as they can and restore the magic that it once had.
i really miss the full queue experience.. including the collapsing spike room when you shake the bamboo support beam, the shaking the rope guy, the newsreels ... sad.
Also, there was an effect that you didn't mention that I would love to see video of it working if possible. I guess leading up to the door where Indy is in front of it trying to close it, they used to have tons of low-lying fog, which is the reason the truck starts to glide in that section. It was like floating on a cloud some others have said. This would be awesome to see and learn more about also. My 2 cents. Great channel. Love the videos!
Thank you. My first attempt at this video covered almost all the effects rather than only some of them like in this video, however, it turned out to be more like a maintenance check list rather than an entertaining piece of content. This is why I end off the video by saying I only covered 60% of all the known broken effects of the ride
@@ChriswithaK I love these videos. I do hope you continue to make more. You're doing great brother!! : ) I do wish there was some good footage from when it opened with the low lying fog effect. If they brought this back, I think it would be the best single revival from the original effects they created.
i was just at dlr 2 days ago, and Indy shut down 6 whole times for 15-45 minutes each time and one of those times i was in the queue about to board and you could see like 12 people in the control room all looking VERY stressed. This has to be one of the most stressful attractions to run at the moment
I rode this just after the first year of its opening and was duly awed by the attention to detail, all the little Easter eggs (I still have an original decoder card for the hieroglyphics on the queue walls), and the sheer complexity of the attraction. It is sad to think that no one thought far enough ahead in the attraction's future as to the maintenance required to maintain its A+ status as an experience. I realize that much of what is contained in the ride is custom manufactured and that there probably AREN’T any spare parts. But anticipation of potential problems (the Disney way of running things) versus only profit (the Chapek way of running things) is what sets apart the old Disney attractions from the new ones. As an example: Alice Davis, Marc Davis's wife, had a background in theatre and was in charge of the costuming for Pirates of the Caribbean. Many professional theatre groups will construct duplicates of each costume for long-running productions so that when one costume fails, it can be sent to the costume shop for repairs while its duplicate is pressed into service for the next performance and the audience is none the wiser. Davis ordered extra fabric and made duplicate costumes for PotC like the true professional she was (and unbeknownst to management.) Shortly after the ride opened, there was a real fire in the burning seaport setting and many of the costumes were damaged. A very anxious executive asked Alice how soon the animatronics could be re-clothed and she replied "as soon as you like," and explained how that was possible. She also said the executive didn't know whether to reprimand her for concealing the extra expense and effort, or to hug her for having the foresight to head off near disaster. Disney spent soooooo much on Indiana Jones. I pray the bean counters allow any and all repairs to bring it back to its fully operational "A mode." So many artisans, designers, engineers, and creative people worked on it. Give their work its due and invest in a legacy of putting it right instead of the attitude of "we’ll maintain the minimum to keep it running.”
i went to disney this summer for the first time in 9 or 10 years and was so excited for this ride bc it was a childhood favorite! left the ride feeling underwhelmed and pretty bummed. rode it again and noticed some of the projections hadn't even been working on the first ride but it really didn't make too much of a difference to me. i especially remember the cars being wild, the robe bridge shaking and the boulder projection being more convincing. now i know my memory isn't just playing tricks! i really hope they fix this stuff during the refurb
the same thing is happening to radiator springs racers in DCA. a lot of effects aren't working inside and the actual racing part is starting to show its wear as well. it's nowhere near as clean as it was opening year
The mountain/facade is also supposed to receive a paint job every 10 years, they haven’t done that either. Most likely they will do it in the upcoming refurbishment though
i work overnight at the park to clean the ride track. unfortunately yeah it’s very difficult to maintain in a good condition. hopefully this refurb helps with the overall ride.
That snake animatronic is just sad. Like… there’s a Rain Forest Café near where I live that no one has probably cared about in 20 years and ITS animatronic snake moves better than that cobra
It’s extremely sad that Temple of the Forbidden Eye is at a terrible shape while Tokyo DisneySea’s Temple of the Crystal Skull(Not related to the film, it came out 7 years earlier) is still running like new 21 years later.
to be fair oriental land company is in charge of that park so although it’s under the disney name, it’s not disney that runs it, and so the oriental land company is able to maintain the ride unlike disney
Rode this recently and was not impressed- everyone said how much better it was than Dinosaur in Disney World- but the state that it was in would 100 percent choose dinosaur over indy every time. Hopefully, the refurb changes that.
So I actually got to ride Indy for the first time in 2018 and the news reels were there. Took my brother post-covid when the Sallah speech was all that was left, but I didn’t mind that one so much mostly because the unique and particular speech patterns burned into our brain and became an in-joke. I actually made a t-shirt on Redbubble with the speech text in the Indy font and he’s getting it for Christmas! I haven’t been since July so I my particular issues may be resolved (doubt it lmao) but this thing was RAGGEDY when I went. I was at Disneyland for a 5 day trip. On the first day I went on it and I managed to get in line and get on in between LENGTHY downtimes. Several of the moving parts of the ride didn’t move, as you outline and everyone knows. But the kicker was the ride timing being off; we’d make it through the blow dart tunnel and the issue became obvious. You’d head towards the boulder or whatever’s next normally and wouldn’t notice doing nearly a u-turn in a pitch black room to get there, but something was off EVERY TIME I rode it and as soon as you hit the end of the blow dart room you’d be stopped and frozen. The engine noises and music continued for a second, then the music would stop and you’d have just the engine noises and be in pitch darkness. After 30-60 seconds in silence with kids freaking increasingly out, all of a sudden the music would kick back in and the car would jerk to life and continue the ride. One time it must’ve missed something else though because we didn’t get the boulder either.
@@noobcraft6225 nah fam, I rode it like 10 or more times over that week (because even busted it’s just the best ride) and I’d say it did this like 6-8 times out of the 10. It happened way more often than not
I was there in June of last year and experienced the exact same problems with the sounds shutting off and just sitting with the noise of the engine idling, killing the momentum of the narrative. It had been 15 years since I’d been on it and was excited for my kids to experience it with me but was pretty disappointed how much of it didn’t work. Maybe especially the boulder not moving.
I remember how amazing it was as a kid in like 1998 and even in 2006 I remember thinking it wasn’t as good as I remembered it but at the time I thought it was because of how intense something is as a kid! But it literally wasn’t! I wonder what things can even be fixed in it… so much seems impossible.
I thought I was just suffering nostalgia goggles when I went on this ride 10 years ago it literally inspired me to be an artist but I went a few months ago and this ride left me very disappointed and I couldn't figure out why lol thankyou for the video!
I’m so glad I’m not the only person who’s noticed the quality of this ride deteriorating. I thought I was nit-picking. It’s so sad to me because this was consistently one of Disneyland’s top attractions for years. That queue is still my favorite in all of Disney and it’s very obvious to me that Disney was attempting to use lighting and special effects to distract from the fact that the ride was wearing down. I agree with you that all of that just doesn’t work with this ride because it was much more effective when it was really really dark. The effects don’t work as well when you can see everything that’s happening. I just don’t understand how they’ve allowed this much to go wrong on this ride without doing anything about it, especially considering the mass popularity of it. You just know they’re only now going to refurbish it because Indiana Jones 5 is coming out this summer.
I grew up in SoCal, and went to the Anaheim, CA. Disneyland. I was able to go on the ride shortly after it first opened in the ‘90s, I loved it! What a shame how it’s come to this.
I just went to Disneyland on the 23 of December. We went on Indy. Almost everything you touch on this video was not working. The Indy ride needs serious refurbishment.
You forgot to point out one issue that I have had a problem with for almost 20 years now. At the end of the right, you get a message from Salah to remain seated. Originally, the message he gave you was different depending on which room you went through at the beginning of the ride. However, nowadays, the only message they ever play is the message he is supposed to say when you enter the room of Timeless Youth. I really think they need to fix that and bring it back to its original state.
As I stated in the video, only about 60% of all the issues of the ride were brought up. The problem with Salah (and also indy) not giving the right dialogue is due to the LCU I brought up in the video. Indiana Jones used to give different audio when guests approached the snake, the one that never plays anymore is "Watch out for anything that slithers". Those two audio effects were "lost" sometime between 2012-2015, not 20 years ago. This is why I encouraged viewers to watch the video on the broken LCU in the video since it covers that as well as a multitude of other issues with audio on the ride.
I was surprised at how short the queue segment of the vid was. I worked on parades for Disney (Aladdin) at the time IJA opened. We were given access to a private pre-opening premier of the ride and I still have the decoder card they handed out to decode all the messages on the wall. Anyway, pretty much everything has been toned down or disabled. One of my favorite parts of the queue was the collapsing ceiling with the spikes. That initial BOOM was super loud and startled you as you shook the bamboo brace...and the ceiling would come down to around 7' or so...not so much anymore as it doesn't even work. The airbursts were much more "punchy" and the ride overall was just a completely different experience. I'm glad I got to see it like it was intended, but dang! And here I thought I was just getting Old in my recollection of the ride...
I wouldn’t count on it. Iger was responsible for a lot of the budgetary cuts to begin with. Chapek just made it all worse. For years Disney’s maintenance philosophy has been “death by 1000 cuts“ instead of just fixing things and maintaining a level of quality that they used to be known for.
If you think Indy is in bad shape, wait until you ride DINOSAUR, its Florida counterpart. I rode it this March and it was awful. We could barely see any of the scenery. It's supposed to be a dark ride, but not like THIS. There was an entire section in the middle of the ride with ZERO lighting (and no, that's not the intent). A good portion of the ride was the computer "naming" dinosaurs that nobody could see. We just had to take her word for it that they were out there. They had the "photo" carnotaurus visible, the iguanodon at the end, and not much more. I've ridden it many, many times, and this was probably the last.
That does sound pretty bad, but that still isn't really comparable to Indiana Jones' MULTIPLE missing props, special effects, and preshow elements as well as sound effects that have been permanently broken for the last decade.
The sad truth is, Disney would rather invest in new rides because that’s what draws in new guests. Spending millions fixing all the issues on Indy won’t translate to increased attendance or money… you can’t really market based on “hey we fixed a bunch of stuff! Come back!” but that same millions on something new will.
Well, the main issue with indy is actually Rise of the Resistance. The park has a limited maintenance budget and every time a new ride comes along it slashes the maintenance budget for all the rides in the resort. Rise, from what I understand, takes a huge chunk of the maintenance since there are so many unnecessary moving parts in the ride. Additionally, Under Chapeck, the maintenance budget was reduced even rather for all attractions. This is why Indiana Jones is in the current state it’s in.
It sucks this ride is in such bad state. Me and my mom rode this back in September. This was her favorite ride. The snake didn't work on our visit, I know the dart scene was off and our vehicle literally stopped multiple times and in one scene we were stopped in the dark and the headlights on the vehicle stopped working. I know this ride is popular and had about a 70-75 minute wait time while we were there, but they should still space the vehicles better. Then again that honor goes to Bumper Boats of the Caribbean. Seriously I couldn't enjoy one of my favorite rides without bumping into a boat.
We went to the parks back in October & the ball at the end (or I guess the room like u said) didn't even ever move so that part was broken too. I legitimately thought the ride was just a lot less scary then when I was a kid because I'd grown up, but it seems like it's def more to do with the state of the ride being in such disrepair. I really hope they can fix a lot of the issues because it's one of my all time favorites.
They're never going to fix the ice machine. They'd have to rip the roof open on the show building to do it. At the time it broke, the vendor fixed it a few times before giving up because it wasn't really designed to do what Disney wanted. All things considered, Temple of the Forbidden Eye was a state of the art attraction, costing more than the following refurb of Tomorrowland when they made everything "bronze", moved the rockets, and bringing us the short-lived Rocket Rods.
I was just there last week and the ride broke down right as our car was at the boulder. We sat there with the lights on hanging out under indy and the boulder spinning in place for a good while until they got stuff running again and we finally got to the loading zone. They let us go again since we got stuck and i swear it felt like the ride was going to stop in the exact same place for a few seconds. That ride seriously isn't what it used to be I really hope they fix up all those issues and bring it back to its glory days
Glad to see others noticing this. I first went to Disneyland back in 2012 and remembered many things about this ride being so awesome. I returned in 2022 and was it was nowhere near the quality it was on my first visit
I rode it a few weeks ago and it broke down once while I was in line, and it stopped right before the bridge. And then the audio in the arrow part didn’t play. And then when the bolder was chasing the music stopped. It wasn’t very fun. That was the first time it has ever happened for me
Great analysis and fantastic production! (I'm impressed with how much solid information you crammed into 13 minutes!!!) I'm hopeful that this refurbishment will result in some major changes, but my hopes aren't too high. But I'll take what I can get! I'm expecting at the very LEAST a functioning snake, a more reliable boulder scene, and hopefully the news reel's return. I'm absolutely flabbergasted that the full news real videos still aren't playing...did they lose the files, or what???
I’ve asked around with other TH-camrs, cast members and Disney fans and the common consensus is that 1. They removed it for COVID 2. They kept it since it helps with the operation issue. Most guests weren’t seeing the safety video due to the reels
I've never actually been on this ride. I've only been to Disneyland twice in my life. When I went as a kid it didn't exist, and when I went as a teen ten years later it was down for maintenance. I'm going to Japan in March, and I hope to hit Tokyo Disney while I'm there. Fingers crossed I guess lol
How the heck can a company like Disney _not_ manage basic maintainance of their own rides? They do realize that aside from hardcore loyalists a first impression is often the *only* impression a ride will give? If I went and a ride was sloppy and dilapidated I wouldn't bother to try it again.
Even the park cleanliness in general. It’s disgusting. I’ve been frequenting Universal Studios, Orlando way more than Disney. It’s easier to deal with crowds, it’s clean and I can actually get on more than 2 rides per day.
I was just at Disneyland in October of 2022. Not going back until they fix the issues on all the major rides. Also, it's too damn crowded and expensive
Man, I feel lucky that when I went back in July 2021, ride experience wasn't as scuffed as what people apperantly got. Sad the ride now ended up in this state.
It doesn't make sense why you can't fix the fucking ride. Look at how much it cost for one goddamn ticket and they can't fix the rides like are you serious. If I'm going to pay that much money every ride needs to be working. Every animatronic every sound everything has to be 100%. It's like the Disney standard has gone away. Well it does show due to the movies haven't been that good
Yeah I’ve been very sad about this one in recent visits. The last I remember it being in great shape was in 2015 :/ I understand that these are complex effects and it would take quite an effort to get it back up to snuff but it’s at a point where few would complain if it were to go under a year or even longer refurbishment to restore it to former glory.
The last time we were on Indiana Jones was 2008. It was great back then. One of our favorite rides. Hopefully they correct everything. Thank you for your video! 😃✨
Rode this in June 2022, was SO disappointed in the boulder finale effect completely disabled. It's like cutting out the last scene of a movie.....not acceptable. Universal Studios Hollywood had this problem for several years with the original Jurassic Park River Adventure with the T-Rex at the end. Eventually they got that resolved, I don't know why Disney can't get the boulder resolved. I also don't buy the excuses for the malfunctioning yeti at Animal Kingdom. This and that about structural problems still unacceptable excuses just find another solution and get something working properly.
Let’s put it this way: Universal Hollywood took the opportunity during the year long closure to refurbish all their rides to proper working order while Disneyland decided not to do it and now we are seeing many E-Ticket rides in terrible shape. Like, I can’t believe guests are spending $20 for Radiator Springs Racers Lightning Lane when the entire ride is on B-Mode and the projection effects are extremely off.
“Back to its former glory”? How about make it better than ever? This ride need a major overhaul and upgrade a la Alice in wonderland. It’s time for new and improved.
Yes I would like to hear your thoughts on the projection mapping, also how you think it compares to the Disneysea version where they never tried to pull the three door trick (Which was really really cool while it worked).
I remember when it opened. I was one of the first 100 people to ride it. Part of my premium pass was 188$ if memory is correct. With it you got to go to a “cast party” an overnight tour of the park where they walked you through all the dark rides. Rode Space Mountain with the lights on. Discounts on merch and food, early entry into the park and and chance to be one of the first to ride Indiana Jones. It broke down constantly that day. It seemed like an eternity of waiting. Everyone was mesmerised by the coded messages on the walls brought to you by AT&T lol. Sad to see it in such bad shape now. But it was amazing way back then.
I went on the Indiana Jones ride in California with my dad the first year it opened. We went on a rainy weekday, so there would be no lines. We must have ridden it four or five times in a row. I remember being impressed by how different it was each time. Though back then, it wasn't a "bug room," it was a "blow dart room" if I remember correctly, or I guess I just don't remember the "bug room."
Fix it! Not like they are out of money! Last time i went a year ago I paid over 1200 bucks - and almost every ride was busted up or broken down 😢Disneyland is mirroring California
Yeah why did they get rid of those two other newsreels segments in the film room. I LOVED those bits. It added to the atmosphere. Now it's the annoying safety reel back to back to back to back to back to back and back and back to back to back and back and back... yeah, it's as annoying as reading that but worse, you have to listen to it.
some context as to why it could be worse after the closing. rides are made to move constantly, while yes this will eventually break things it is made to move. when a ride is shut down for a long time and not used, it gets used to it. when it is suddenly turned back on and moving how it was supposed to before it is not used to it anymore. you can really see this with the snake, the way it was bent down makes me thing it was like that for a year or so and got used to being that low and just staying there, not moving.
i realized that this could be confusing so im going to give more info. During lockdown the moving axels could have rusted or just broken down. She is also a very old snake and i have heard from my friends who work their that she was always breaking down barley moving before covid . One of the said that on days she worked they would let the ride go multiply times before opening to have her(and the rest of the effects but mostly for the snake, Indiana, and the moving bolder scene) warm up and get ready to move before guests rode the ride
I've always been hoping that Disneyland Paris would finally get their copy of this ride, so I could ride the "1995 version" with everything working Because that feels more likely than the existing one ever being repaired properly
10:00 During the last time I went on the ride a few weeks ago(and even a couple more times before) the mice effect didn’t activate and it was pitch black. Oh and when in the loading area after the ride finished, we could here some of the audio clips from inside the ride. Such as “look into my eyes” and some of indie saying “why does it have to be snakes”
This is indicative of the priority, or lack thereof, of quality across the board. In their movies, in their parks, in their general attitude as a company. They are GREED MONSTERS and that's it. The last time I went to Disneyland over two decades ago, there were a lot of people in the park, but it was IMMACULATE. The park was tidy, clean, and everything worked great. The prices also hadn't gone up to astronomical levels quite yet either and the food was tasty and generous.
I agree after my last visit to the park (late August '22) I could tell things were broke-down on the ride but hopefully the can make it better when they overhaul the ride soon maybe make updates to make it just as fun as when it opened
This is truly disappointing considering it’s my favorite ride at Disneyland. Went in 2016 and things were still in good condition, although I think I did notice the mirror illusion was changed from its original at that time.
It would need to close for a year or more, doubt they can get it back to its original condition. Many of the toned down elements were done purposely to keep maintenance down.
Oh, man. I remember going on this ride with my family back in the 00s, and it was one of the best rides in the whole park. I'm devastated that Disney is so greedy and miserly that they'd let this ride deteriorate like this.
So work at the park and I’ve talk to the Indiana Jones cast members and they all say the same thing, we need a refurbishment , bad… I definitely hope they get it
I understand letting go of stuff like the falling ice blocks, because some effects really don't even get noticed unless you're really looking. I wish they would restore the Chamber of Destiny illusion, but I understand why they haven't But the fact that the finale boulder doesn't work anymore is SHOCKING.
I just can't understand why they can't get a freaking snake head on a stick to move.
Agree! When I think about all the amazing things they do in other areas, how can you not make this head move forward?🤣
They’re replacing it soon
th-cam.com/video/7lGTVVvsUwU/w-d-xo.html
You’re gonna love this, Spinlok
They blew their budget on making sure Spider-Man can collide into a wall!
New snake has been seen backstage.
I remember thinking back in 2020 that one nice thing about the parks being closed for the pandemic is that the imagineers finally have time to properly renovate all the rides, especially Indiana Jones. Couldn't have been more wrong 😅
Too many layoffs when Covid hurt their profits. Disney refused to give them proper pay, so many either left, got laid off, or died from Covid...😥
2020 was the hardest year for a really long time
actually in some states they evn closed down people from building and fixing things too as well as anything budget wise was put on hold
This is how I felt about Everest! I literally thought, Rohde has all the time to fix the yeti & make good on hi promise 🙃
Yeah but Gavin newscum made it impossible for anybody to do anything during the lockdown.
@@cashvault1996They ‘died’ of Covid? We’re they all over the age of 70 and 280 lbs?
I think you just nailed the underlying issue- all of Disney is now in B mode.
A great comment!
I went to Disney recently since 2018 and man. So many neglected animatronic. Pirates is another one. So many missing pieces like the cats the donkey, the dog!
That is a really good way of putting it
Just for indiana jones
We gotta start letting Disney know, they’re not being accountable because I doubt people really voice their opinions on it
I knew a maintenance guy who worked on the ride and he said they had to reduce the intensity cuz the vehicles were destroying themselves. They actually had to rebuild all the cars at one point!
Oof, that makes sense though. The motion was violent! Like, it was genuine thrill ride that felt way more extreme than it actually was. That couldn't have been good for those massive, heavy vehicles.
I feel like that should be a cost of doing business...
They flew to close to the Sun with this ride.
@@itsguooocould be a safety concern too
@@itsguooo Not if you want it to last as a long term investment
Some insight from someone who worked at the park, and best friend currently works Indy/Trains/Jungle/Tiki:
-generator in the queue is because the entire thing (jeep from the movie, generator, etc.) is all rusted out and filled with spiders. Speed was never reduced, that's just what it does now
-Missing news reel is because of covid; they wanted to keep people moving as fast as possible through the indoor queues, so they cut out the other reels to keep guests moving, as they don't have to watch the entire reel, only the relevant safety info, per policy
-wall of mirrors/chamber of destiny was due to seismic damage on the building. This wasn't the case of poor maintenance, but the unfortunate frequent seismic activity of socal (Believe me, I want this fixed as much as everyone else, but it's about as likely as the yeti)
-the ice machine caused so much leaking and rotting and mold issues, you don't want it back I promise
-Fair point on the door slamming effect, I'd like to see that make a return
-I've heard rumors that the bridge effect is a known issue, they can't fix it due to safety concerns/lack of adequate fall protection for the cast that would have to fix it
-Fluffy is old (the snake) be nice to her :'( In all seriousness though, yeah, she's notorious with the CMs. She's not completely inoperable, but she went down enough that until she's fixed, she'll be static. The closure wasn't kind to her. (Fun fact, you can hear her from the CM bathroom, since it's right underneath the snake)
-I think the lava smoke effects were less from a fog machine, and more from the vastly larger fire effects that used to be there. I think they were removed for guest comfort/energy consumption concerns
-I don't even have to watch the part about the rat room to know whatever you say is fair criticism, that shit sucks
-Same with the boulder effect.
It would be cool if they just re themed it or did a massive over haul and maybe do a an Avatar like adventure ride
“Spiders. Why'd it have to be spiders?...”
This ride is a shell of what it was in the 90's. And just when I think it couldn't get any worse, Disney proves that it can.
It’s just so popular they never wanna close it, but now they are finally closing it for a LONG refurbishment
Yes! It's in the Tokyo version...
This! Yes!
Damn, you're right. Now I can "see" that in my mind again. They did remove that part.
Just to note, there have been a lot of people saying this complaint, "disneyland was closed for a long time during the covid pandemic and the maintenance crews had a lot of time to get everything working properly"
The issue with this statement was that all maintenance crews for the park were furloughed for the majority of covid.
Im heartbroken to hear this, i went as a kid pre-2010 several times. I had to close my eyes for the snake part every time! I felt like it got inches from my face. I remember it feeling "off" while I was there in 2014ish but chalked it up to remembering my childhood too fondly. I Knew it ;-;
I was scared of the snake as a child
Same!! Man I was mot the only one!
Feeling off?
Wow! We had the same experience…i thought as I grew up my perspective changed….
They were smart
They recently removed the bamboo post in the spike room in the queue so you can’t pull on it to trigger the spikes and sound effects. The ride has been in poor condition for years.
They remove that before every refurb usually, it’s not too surprising to see it gone for a bit
Awwww, man!
I was in Disneyland a few days ago and when I walked through the spike room, I kept thinking that there was supposed to be something you pull on somewhere but I couldn’t find it! Glad to hear I’m not crazy
Bro I'm so sad about that
Was just there day after Christmas, it was there but the ride was just sad.
Something I think Indy could greatly benefit from is the fireball effect from Tokyo’s version of the ride. It would make a great replacement for that horrible rat-branch projection thing right before the dart room.
That was a rat branch? All this time I thought it was an oversized spider web
@@tennojiberri Yup. The projection is supposed to show rats/mice running across some vines or a branch of some sort. Not a spider web.
Though a spider web is actually kind of a cool idea.
@@tennojiberri The “Rat Branch” effect used to look really good, but the ravages of time have taken their toll.
I feel like the latter parts of the Indy ride deserve a "Hastily Made Tourism" video like this gem!:
th-cam.com/video/oZzgAjjuqZM/w-d-xo.html
_oh-_
Honestly, the rat projection and the skeleton always looked cheep and something out of a carnival ride in this otherwise amazing attraction. I would not mind a complete overhaul of that section.
I agree, I also never understand why it’s pitch black lol DisneySea has SOME type of lighting or theming in theirs.
Disney’s justification for having no dog is probably deterioration lol
This ride in its opening year was spectacular. Really sad state.
I don't have experience with this ride, but I can easily tell you that most rides at WDW suffer from a complete lack of maintenance as well. Its depressing what they haven't done/done to Spaceship Earth.
I've gone to WDW since 1975, when it cost $7.95 for the whole day, but wouldn't go anymore, until they
lower the prices & spend more on maintenance! I never even heard of this ride, but it looks great, if it works!
When I went to WDW this last February a lot of rides were down for refurbishment!
I still have my translator card
@@LadyMissCoppertone i wrapped packing tape around mine. Didn’t want it torn lol
my mom was there on opening day too!!!
You sound like a fun person! 😁 that was a great story, thanks for sharing that!!
Do you have footage? If so could you upload it?
Disney needs to get their shit together and fix this ride as effectively as they can and restore the magic that it once had.
i really miss the full queue experience.. including the collapsing spike room when you shake the bamboo support beam, the shaking the rope guy, the newsreels ... sad.
You beat me to it. I was going to post the same thing
I do wish there was some good footage from when it opened with the low lying fog effect.
What sucks is that it’s so much newer compared to Indy!
i work overnight at the park to clean the ride track. unfortunately yeah it’s very difficult to maintain in a good condition. hopefully this refurb helps with the overall ride.
I guess the one good thing to come from the new Indy movie is that this great ride will get fixed.
Amazing how they continue to raises the prices for entry and yet don’t take care of ride upkeep
Agree 100%, we were just there in Dec 2022, it broke down so many times. and the quality is subpar. Please restore this great ride!
Now that Iger is back I’m hoping he’ll invest a lot of money into this refurb
I wouldn’t count on it. Iger was responsible for a lot of the budgetary cuts to begin with. Chapek just made it all worse. For years Disney’s maintenance philosophy has been “death by 1000 cuts“ instead of just fixing things and maintaining a level of quality that they used to be known for.
@@devineimageworks well, okay then :P
I'm a cast member so I feel you guys believe me it's going to be worth it
If you think Indy is in bad shape, wait until you ride DINOSAUR, its Florida counterpart.
All things considered, Temple of the Forbidden Eye was a state of the art attraction, costing more than the following refurb of Tomorrowland when they made everything "bronze", moved the rockets, and bringing us the short-lived Rocket Rods.
as soon as I saw this on JJJacksfilms i freaking RAN here, i love stuff like this
I was just there last week and the ride broke down right as our car was at the boulder.
A brand new snake animatronic was spotted back stage so we know that's getting fixed
I wish reviews like this would get 10 million views so that it actually makes the news and pushes Disney to stop being cheap and boring
Here from JJJacksfilms!
Man, I feel lucky that when I went back in July 2021, ride experience wasn't as scuffed as what people apperantly got. Sad the ride now ended up in this state.
Last time I rode it the boulder barely seemed to move forward compared to how I remembered it seemingly flying right over the truck
Also the support beam in the spike room in the queue is completely gone now so you cant push on it to trigger the crumbling sound.
Glad I live in Japan. Just came back from taking family to TDR. Nice to always know that everything will always be working.
Rather than retheming other rides, Disney should focus on fixing this attraction and updating Tomorrowland.
Wow! I didn't know about a lot of these! Great work
"HEY LADY! YOU CALL HIM DOCTOR JONES! DOLL!!" -wise boy Short Round
Yes I would like to hear your thoughts on the projection mapping, also how you think it compares to the Disneysea version where they never tried to pull the three door trick
(Which was really really cool while it worked).
I worked at D-land when it first opened. That ride was down ALL the time. And it was new!
Also none of the cool interactive elements of the queue work anymore :(
I went on the Indiana Jones ride in California with my dad the first year it opened.
I've always been hoping that Disneyland Paris would finally get their copy of this ride, so I could ride the "1995 version" with everything working
Because that feels more likely than the existing one ever being repaired properly
10:00
During the last time I went on the ride a few weeks ago(and even a couple more times before) the mice effect didn’t activate and it was pitch black.
Disney got rid of you know who recently, probably due to mismanagement of the parks. Hopefully this will get our parks back on track
What a bummer. I really hope that upcoming refurbishment gets this back to it's rightful state.
It would need to close for a year or more, doubt they can get it back to its original condition. Many of the toned down elements were done purposely to keep maintenance down.
@@HauntedMansionHaunt You're right. I hadn't thought about that.
