The quality and interaction of maps, story's of the journey just keeps moving up the charts, Sharing your skills you had learned the hard way is priceless.
I love how you encourage encourage Mo and how she responded that you could have your head injury now :) Classic. Thank you for sharing your teaching moments.
Well I like them all, but this video in particular was very enjoyable. As a frequent sailor but keen to single hand, it was great watching Monique managing the whole departure and sail raising. No rush, no fuss. Well done! Great sailing, great video as always.
Drake,I have to say, from the panaramic veiws to the stories to the added text info on the mega vessels to the vast wealth of your historical knowledge....you should be getting paid from national geographic or some outfit of the like. You are also a great and patient teacher and Moe is a great student.I have enjoyed watching the two of you grow more comfortable with eachother as well.A charming couple indeed. And that sunset at the end of your anchoring job.It was just priceless.I am also VERY appreciative of the longer video as well.Given that I live vicuriously through yours and other sailers videos.I cannot wait to watch the vids from ireland and scottland. My family is from scottland.I know a few storys about my bloodline from over there.Would LOVE to see it in person someday.Anyways, thanks again and thanks for the headsup that we wont be getting anymore footage til you get where your comfortable editing more.Safe journeys and CHEERS!
Thank you for sharing. We all enjoy your videos. I'm land locked right now. I'm taking care of a wife with Leukemia, a broken hip that didn't heal so she's in a walker or wheelchair. I'm also taking care of my 84 year old Mother in-law who had heart surgery and has dementia. We have 19 and 18 yr old sons. Oh yeah I'm a Navy veteran that receives 100% disability from the VA from a brain injury that require surgery, I also have an anxiety disorder. When I sail the anxiety goes away. SO right now I live through watching your and other videos and reading stuff. Thank you for bringing all of this to us. By the way my last ship in the Navy was a guided missile cruiser called the USS Josephus Daniels CG27. My last liberty port of call was Newport. I went there and then to Arlington Mass to visit my Aunt and Uncle. SO you brought some enjoyment for me in looking at this places.
I was the Officer in Charge when they had a Coast Guard Station, I taught my nephew how to sail in the salt pond. that was back in the 80's we lived at the house next to South East lighthouse......thanks for the memories, I wish you guy's following seas.
Another fantastic video. I will replay this for my wife this evening. We will complete ASA 101 103 and 104 in the San Juan Islands off Washington in May. Thank you so much!
Your vids are getting better and better! Love all the little side infos and pictures you squeeze in. Had lots of storms here in Europe lately, have a good and safe trip! My boat finally gets a wet keel again next week!
We just had a hellacious sail from Kinsale to Baltimore. The winds had been higher for the past several days and we discovered the seas were still really rough when we got out there. Congrats on getting you boat back in the water and hope you have a great sailing season!
ParrotSailor Haha, that would be awesome :) Sadly I don't think I have enough vacation time left this year to be able to sail to the Faroe islands and back to Denmark. The upcoming trip to the US and a possible trip to visit friends in Hawaii later this year takes up the majority of my vacation time. If only I was a full-time cruiser! :)
I was just in Newport last weekend and the boats were practically stacked like cord wood. ;) seriously though, in peak season the boats are soooo close together. I'm new to your channel and am happy to have found it. Thanks for sharing your life and times. :)
I learned something new! When you were keeping the green to starboard, I thought that's not right, but Drake wouldn't make such a mistake.... It turns out it's the opposite in the UK. Red to starboard when going to sea :)
That took some getting used to once we arrived in the UK. Ha, definitely not a mistake we'd like to make especially with some of the rocky waters here in Scotland! (✿◠‿◠) ⚓-Monique
@@marekvids11 Heh, indeed it did. I'm going through our old videos and updating a bunch of information and thought I would answer a few of the older comments as a lark. At the time we were dealing with very little wifi and often just weren't able to answer comments in a timely manner. Hmmmm, 5 years...better late than never? (✿◠‿◠) Ah, I really do think that the western coast of Scotland is such a fantastic place to sail with a slew of interesting little anchorages and protected harbours. I'm afraid we haven't explored England at all (yet!), but we are hoping the spend a winter at St. Katharine Docks Marina in a year or two depending on how this whole pandemic goes. We shall see. Take care and fair winds to you. ⚓-Monique
DrakeParagon thanks Monique. I’m sure things will get better soon. If you do sail down the east coast on your way to London please stop in at Shotley Marina which is where we keep our boat. All the best and enjoy Scotland 🏴😀
Thank you for an other great video, i like the way you give us info on things that you pas by. Your music selection is also great, i am waiting for you arrival in Iceland being from there originally but now living in Denmark. Have a safe journey to the Faroe Island, lived there for 2 years... great people there and a descent beer there.
another great series, love your trip , love your boat and love your videos... congrats you have a great life . from Lisboa, Portugal, good luck to you and stay safe. you guys rock
I can't remember if you mentioned the name of that cool house on the island near New Port. If not it's 'The Clingstone House'. There are a bunch of videos on TH-cam. Apparently the owner bought for $3.600.
Cha Cha is currently on stands @ New England Boatworks in Portsmouth RI. The boat was auctioned off early last year for less than $10k (I think). Someone is working on her... Don't know who. I was driving through the yard the other day and saw her. I thought to myself, Man.... this is the boat Paragon had her crazy experience with. Sounds that boat was towed more than it was sailed.
the best way i heard it put is the main sail is your power and the gib is your speed. in othe words the mail gives you the power to get going and crash through waves. it dose help point and balance as well.the jib is you speed top gear. but they both need to be trimmed jointly for balance... be safe on you trip and as all was far winds and calm seas...
I continue to be impressed by the kicking your windlass can take. What make and model is it? I imagine if it hasn't broken yet, it must be one hell of a well engineered windlass :)
That "lighthouse" on the way into Newport harbor was part of the estate that Kennedy used as a summer White House. Newport is where Kennedy and Jackie O got married.
Thanks for the continued effort putting up vids. If you can sail a dingy, you can sail a big boat! Dinghies respond in real time, big boat respond in 3/4 time. Cheers!
Drake Paragon-- do you ever come and speak at a sail club, school. or marina on the Chesapeake? If so, please post it as i would love to hear you speak and tell of your experiences on the sea. Thanks for posting-
I am definitely sold on the Rocna anchor. How has it held up in your further travels? Also what is the proper name for the line organizer that is attached to your stays that you tie your halyards to?
To save wear and tear on your windlass use the engine to motor forward and break the anchor free. Will save you some time rebuilding a burnt out windlass motor. Don't ask me how I know.
Thanks for the great videos. Can you tell me why you have the red channel markers on the left and the green channel markers on the right when you are heading out of port? I thought they were that orientation for entering port.
Absolutely. I know that one way or another we will sail to Norway someday. We are actually debating whether to sail from Faroe to Norway, or from Faroe back to Ireland this late Summer. Someday I want to sail to Svalbard.
can you not invert a funnel under where your chain gets stored so that gravity would have it lower in loops?just an idea though I am sure you have tried it.
I have heard good reviews about the anchor you have! I currently have a 35 lb CQR and my boat displacement is 10, 100 lbs. I have been considering an anchor like yours, but was curious what are your thoughts on the CQR?
Hi LifeisLikeSailing, I had a 45 lb CQR for 6 years on my Westsail 32, and then a 65 lb CQR on Paragon for the first few years and it was definitely more difficult to set than out 70lb Rocna. There were a couple of times when the CQR did drag in higher winds when the wind direction dramatically changed very quickly. The Rocna sets almost too fast regardless of anything and it has never dragged on us in any conditions. We are very happy with it.
Thanks so much for the reply and the information! That makes my decision much easier to here your experiences and thoughts on the different anchors! :)
Love your videos Drake. Hey, does that Starboard sheet winch need some grease? It sounds a bit "crunchy" .. Then again, it may just be my laptop has "crunchy" speakers lol :O)
ozskipper We had just rebuilt all of the winches before we left North Carolina. I heard Mark say that a loudly clicking winch is usually in good working order.
Up Anchor, just a short question, how come you do not put the engine in gear and creep up on the anchor to take the pressure load off the windlass,,,? Otherwise the windlass is dragging a heavy boat and tugging on an anchor,,,, just creeping up on it reduces the load by lots and lots of tons,,,, increasing your windlass life by years and years.
Adam Mac Not everything gets captured on film all the time. We use the engine to motor towards the anchor all the time so that the windlass doesn't have to work so hard. There have also been times when we've had to use the 85 hp engine in full throttle to get the anchor free (like in our Season 2 episode "Stuck" and "Free at Last"
Adam Mac Hi Adam, I think in this particular video the wind was so light and there was practically no current, and the depth wasn't that great so there wasn't really that much strain on the windlass. But thank you! Thanks to your feedback, I think the next time we film raising the anchor I'll make a point to show exactly how we motor towards the anchor to reduce the strain.
that old boy bought that house on the rock for $ 3600 in 1960's and is on u-tube fyi wait till you see his "dinghy" on the house! (sorta like a cast iron bath tub!) lol

Drake-n-Moe; You managed yet another fantastic post. We all count the days until the next one. Gotta say this video was by far my fav.
Keep up the great work and fair winds and following seas to you both.
