I'm still confused about how California got nominated and not any of their other albums. Like yeah, I get it was a comeback album after 5 years, but so was neighborhoods and that album is so much more creative than California. Like Matt is a good musician, but it's like he didn't even try, or wasn't allowed to put his touch on it. Not hating on him, he's very creative with Trio, and I feel like if he is able to put his touch on it, we would get a darker Blink album like the untitled
I seriously feel like Blink should hire a new producer for their next album as Feldman just took the wheel and turned California into his own album.

It's p gross they won for California...and not the untitled album. Untitled was brilliant and creative and used so many cool sounds, California was SO dull in comparison.

The Untitled album, although I hated it during my “punk” teenager phase and grew to love it as I got older, is still one of the most successfully experimental and creative albums I’ve ever listened to. To me, it’s their magnum opus. I only wish I’d appreciated it more when I was younger. California, on the other hand, uses the same tired I V vi IV progression in the key of C we’ve heard a million times for half its tracks, with few riffs to complement the chords. If it wasn’t for Mark’s vocals and Travis’s drumming, I wouldn’t even know it was a Blink album. Even the lyrical content is weak and generic, which is shocking to me considering how solid Skiba usually is as a lyricist. Feldmann was never the best writer, even in Goldfinger, but he was far from terrible. I’ll honestly never understand how California turned out be as awful and disjointed as it is. It’s almost like it was simply made with the sole intent to keep Blink relevant and nothing more.

I'm really happy that blink got to do to Grammys, but California deserved no awards. That was the safest blink album ever. That album was a by the numbers pop rock album with no real emotion because John Feldman told them to write the first thing to come to mind. Was it a bad album? No, but it wasn't a great album. The guitar riffs, lyrics, and melodies and harmonies were all uninspired. That album had no depth and it didn't want to be. They just wanted to please the masses. They got nominated because they have now been around for generations and have enough nostalgia power to be accepted.

I don't even have to say anymore buddy. Especially about Skiba. You get it completely. Another thing I wanted to touch on was the fact Blink was in a really good place as mature sound goes. Neighborhoods was a great record and was exactly where I would have seen them headed after Self Titled. It was completely them. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Dogs Eating Dogs EP that followed after it. They were headed in a really good direction. After watching the Tom Delonge documentary that came out last year, and putting in my own homework, I can truly say that Tom was the true genius behind Blink. Tom always wanted to push things further into new heights, while Mark just kinda does whatever. Just look at Box Car Racer Vs +44. Mark and Tom need each other. They balance each other out. Mark helps Tom stay grounded in reality, and Tom helps Mark explore himself creatively and not so plain. Tom would never put out something this bland and tasteless. Its just not in him. California stunted Blink's growth.
I hope we see the Alkaline Trio magic that we all know Skiba has, because that could propel the new Blink sound. Mark needs direction. When he doesn't have it, all he has to offer is Punk Rock 101.

Never have I ever been this much on thr same page with someone musically over the internet. This is the most intellectually sound discussion I have ever had on a youtube comment section. I feel as if I have closure with Cali and over all new Blink now. All I needed was to talk to someone who I could discuss in detail about it. I'm not as cynical (heh heh references) as I was about it. This was quite needed and I am glad to have talked about this with you friend. You know exactly what you are talking about and know how to display it perfectly. Well done sir.

I completely agree, I think instrumentally everything was mainly all there, it's exactly what Mark described fast, catchy and loud and reminiscent of earlier blink, but the lyrics dragged it down for me, Tom was always great at bringing good lyrics to the table especially in the later albums and it's evident with blink, +44 and alkaline trio that Mark and Matt can definitely write better than what they did, I hope they listen to fan feedback and kick it up a notch in the next album, I understand the reasoning for playing it safe with it being the first album without Tom but still.
