    I haven't tried it yet, but the company itself instructs you to brew with a small amount of water (it was afterall conceived as a sort of espresso maker), like 15g of coffee with water up to only 1/4 of the Aeropress and then you can dillute it with hot water if you want something more like filtered coffee (which is what most people want from it anyway). So if you use like 60g you can brew 4 cups and then it sounds kinda silly to say "oh, you can only brew small amounts" and "you should throw away the instruction manual" in the same video. All that said, I don't follow the instructions either...

    To each their own, but here are some suggestions after using for quite some time and aero-nerding out:
    1) This product was DESIGNED for 1-2 cups (among several other design-related tidbits that follow).
    2) Yes, the inverted method is better.
    3) Never use metal or plastic filters if you don't have to; paper is simply the best and most effective.
    4) The grind should NOT be fine, but closer to an espresso grind.
    5) Use a burr grinder to expose the most, consistent surface area (hand grinders are great for traveling, but not at home).
    6) Stirring the coffee when the water is first poured in (bloom phase) is very important and should be done for about 10 seconds.
    7) Best NOT to fill up the chamber, but to dilute the espresso-sized volume of coffee once it's in the cup.
    8) Brewing in the chamber is a waste of time; it was not designed that way.
    9) When pushing down, push until you feel resistance, pause, then slowly push the rest of the way.
    @Kathleen Douglas, great tip on stopping-the-drip-when-you-flip! And just in case you don't want to do that, put a towel between the Aeropress and the cup. Or...put the cup on the bottom, then flip them all.😁
    These suggestions will consistently produce a full-bodied, flavorful cup with no bitterness. And it's stupid-easy!

    I am an unsophisticated coffee philistine. I use as blade grinder. I don't have a scale. I do all the things coffee purists sneer at. Nevertheless, I tried to make a mug of coffee using my humble tools with your method. The result was a mug of coffee which was far superior to any I have made. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. The finish really stood out. My taste buds were entertained long after I swallowed the last drop. I even managed to do one thing better than you. I flipped the press onto my mug without a spill. :)
    The lesson of my experience is even a coffee slob like me can benefit from your video.

      @@JinPhila With the standard method, after you filled the tube with water and stirred (10 seconds), if you lift the press from the cup, you will see a noticeable amount of coffee water has dripped thru the filter into the cup. BTW, you can stop the dripping by slightly pulling the press out to create a vacuum. That coffee water in the cup had almost no time to brew. With the inverted method, no amount of water can seep thru into the cup before it's had time to brew. Whether the percent of non-brewed is important depends on your or your guests' tastes.

      NO! It’s gotten so bad to the point where I often click away from the page at the first mention of the word “inverted”. Try it out first! Alan Adler didn’t rigorously test and survey the Aeropress for nothing.

      @@MrDarren690 It seems as if the coffee dripping out when using upright method really bothers some users of AP. I don't know if they taste a difference or its just a bias.
      The thing is most videos i've seen using inverted dont use the original Americano style that adds water to a concentrate. (Usually, inverted methods fill the brewer all of the way.) I would think the best time to use inverted method is with the original since it uses less water and more of the total volume would "leak" in to the cup.
      Anyway, I honestly can''t tell a difference in taste.

    I think you forgot to mention the spoon handle retention grinds at 7:18. To correct the loss of grinds I suggest taking a separate scale and weighing an identical clean spoon and regrind the appropriate amount of beans. Setup a second inverted aeropress and the water and grinds while maintaining a 1:16 ratio. Allow for the 30 second bloom and then transfer the additional mixture to the original aeropress. Happy brewing!

    I find the able metal disc filter to leave some silt in the bottom of the cup. Def prefer paper at home but metal is fine for travel or backcountry when disposing of paper (breaking down in a cathole or packing out) is more problematic. Also put your cup over the Aeropress and hold the plunger and chamber with two fingers each on one hand and your second hand on the cup, then flip over, this way you get no spills. Enjoy your cup!

    I have tried several types of systems to make a good coffee, even the expensive to use pod machines, in the end I settled on the Aeropress because I am the only one in my family that drinks coffee, so the amount that I make in one go is just about right, I do have a proper coffee grinder though so I grind the beans just before I make the coffee. Like the guy in this video, I measure out my coffee, not by weight but by the position of the grinder switch. I like my coffee stronger than he does but that is really the good thing about this system. I also have a milk frother heater so that I can make Latte`s and Cappuccino`s. This method is quick, cheap, makes very good coffee with no mess to clear up.

    Tip I figured out myself and then saw somewhere on the Worldwide Inter-Web: to preserve the integrity of the rubber gasket rim, remove the plunger before drinking your coffee. If it sits in there hot and compressed, eventually, it will degrade and shrink, causing striations to occur as it drags grinds up the inner surface of the chamber. Those striations will reduce the vacuum pressure. Anyway, the coffee needs to cool a little bit before drinking...right?

    • @BH-kh6il
      @BH-kh6il 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Daniel Princus What I do is right after the plunge, remove lid, push coffee/filter puck into garbage, slightly retract plunger, rinse under hot water and then push plunger all the way through. This removes any tension on plunger and also stores the two pieces together. I'm still on my original plunger after five years of owning it.

      B H The one step that seems to be missing there is washing the inside of the chamber. But, it works for you.

    • @flashmanv3260
      @flashmanv3260 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@danielpincus221 -- As long as you insert the plunger in cleanly (nothing gets by the plunger when you do) there is no reason to wash the inside of the chamber. The cup forms an air and watertight seal that acts as a squeegee on the chamber wall leaving no coffee residue behind. If when you insert the plunger and it's a little full, a little bit of coffee can get past the plunger at that moment, and in that case, you might want to give it a quick rinse.

    It’s recommended that all coffee parts should be warm when brewing. An alternative to pre wetting the filter is to fill the empty (inverted) Aeropress with boiling water, attach the filter, place over mug and press down. This being done will have your filter wet, your mug warm and the Aeropress warm also. Other than that, this is exactly the same as my method.

    The plunger works so that with the standard method, as soon as you fill the brewer up to your desired point, quickly stir, and then put the plunger in at an angle just a few millimetres into the brewer, and then pull it up slightly to create a seal, you'll only lose about a teaspoon or two of coffee through the filter because the plunger has prevented any air getting in and forcing the water out. You can then let it brew for a minute or so, take out the plunger, stir it once more and then press.

    i've brewed hundreds of coffees with an aeropress, and i can tell you that the 'drip through' is just with coarse grinds, with a smaller grind, if you get any drip, it's just a few drops, and if u put the plunger on, whether u pull it back a bit for vacuum or not, it won't drip.
    also, using 2 paper filters you can make a stronger and smoother brew, and no drip, using a fine grind of course.
    In my opinion, fine grind is the most recommended grind for an aeropress, you will get a faster and better extraction, and crema(depends on the roast). but tastes are tastes.
    i don't (fully) agree with this guy's opinion on aeropress coffee, metal filter aeropress coffee is not better. i have one, and it sits in my drawer of kitchen junk. When I first got it I tried it out a lot, and no one that i've made a coffee with metal vs paper filter preferred the metal, but again, tastes are tastes. Do you like grit in your coffee? If you do (like fans of Turkish style coffee), then you might love the metal filter.

      Been using my aeropress since Xmas. I got a metal filter, and I love it. I invert and find it best. I bought a scale, but I haven't used it yet, because I have not yet bought a new grinder (have an old blade grinder that is minimally okay). This is THE best coffee we have ever made at home, and I totally see the cult following. Next purchase is a new grinder, so I appreciate the guidance here. Tons of different ways to make aeropresses". Uh dude.
    Using a spoon end does not necessarily saturate all the grounds, especially as finely ground as you have done.
    Use the wonderfully designed paddle that comes with the aero press to properly saturate the ground beans.
    "Get rid of the pre-wet water here..." Ohkaay.
    The non inverted method is also able to be achieved without dripping by pulling back on the piston a bit to create suction.
    And IMHO, a Mokapot is better for using older coffee. Aeropress is divine for pulling flavors out of a fresh bag.

    he pretty much said everything opposite to what the inventor of the Aeropress - Alan Adler. Watch his video here on YT. He specifically said against using metal filter - its relation to LDL Vs Paper Filters and not using inversion style of coffee making - he didn't say don't do it - but the coffee won't taste as good as by the original method.

    • @mariai9549
      @mariai9549 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What happens with these coffee pros is they use newer coffees that are popular now. e.g. light roast,fair trade, single origin, microlots etc. and they try to get a certain flavor. This is why you now see recipes with "coarse" ground coffee with Aeropress.
      Well, it was invented BEFORE all of this 3rd wave coffee boom really took off. When Adler invented it, the majority of coffee used was darker roasted beans.(still is around the world in general terms) So, his original method took that in account. That is why he recommends a lower brewing temp and diluting a concentrate. It produces a smoother cup with less bitternesss which is the most common complaint of coffee opponents and why most drinkers use sugar and cream.

    Thanks to HD, I noticed there's a substantial amount of coffee grinds left stuck to the bottom of the plunger, not touching the water, as you plunge. That seems like a drawback of the reverse flip as opposed to starting in the recommended position on the mug. Is there an effect to the taste because of the loss of contact with water with the grinds left on the plunger? Should I investigate for myself instead of exposing my embarrassing fetish with coffee brewing?

    • @BeansEnjoyer911
      @BeansEnjoyer911 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Henry Keresey
      When I do the Inverted Method, I stir during the bloom, and then once I fill it up with water. This ensures that all beans are contacting water. You could do one final stir before you plunge, but by that time, you're done brewing anyway, so it doesn't matter if a few grams of coffee aren't touching the rest. The pressure is going to squeeze out the brewed coffee regardless if it's stuck or not. So just because the coffee is stuck to the plunger doesn't mean it didn't contribute.

      There's coffee stuck on the plunger because it was compressed at the end of the plunger stroke. Usually at the end of the stroke you can hear a hissing sound as you squeeze all the liquid from the grind. You end up with a solid puck that's easily disposed of.

    • @mariai9549

    No no no. What mechanic pushes a dry rubber plunger in and out of a dry cylinder, where is the supplied plastic agitator? And a 3 mm start gap gives you a back vacuum pull to eliminate drips. Boil your filtered water to stand, while you set up, which should give you near optimum temp to pour and as a portable coffee unit, try and clean your hot metal filter, instead of a quick eject of the paper filter into garbage or camp fire especially if a companion wants their cup first.
    Did like your workshop, do you show bike maintenance tips maybe?
