What’s the Easiest Premed Major? How to Choose

  • What makes some premed majors easier than others, and does an easy path to medical school exist? We break down the most popular premed majors to help you choose the easiest and most straightforward premed path for you.
The premed major you choose may be easier for you because it aligns with your interests. On the other hand, a more challenging premed major may result in an easier and more straightforward path since you will acquire more specific medical knowledge. This could better prepare you for the rigors of medical school and help you stand out. A premed major in humanities may have an easier course load, but it won’t align with your medical school prerequisites.
Choosing a premed major is highly personal, and the easiest path depends on your individual interests and strengths and how competitive you hope to be as an applicant.

I am currently a second-year medical student and I double majored in biomedical engineering and applied mathematics. As long as you enjoy it, I would strongly encourage you to continue with it! It is undoubtedly a challenging path but I think it was worth it for a few reasons. The first is the overlap of required coursework and medical school prerequisites (I did not take any extra semesters or gap years), the second is that in any ABET-accredited program you will be required to pursue a design project in senior year which can get you a poster presentation or a research publication, which will improve your application for medical school, and the great career option in case you lose interest in medicine or are not accepted. Good luck!

I struggled for a minute trying to decide if I wanted to stick with my chemistry degree or switch to psychology. I came to the conclusion to stick with chemistry because many of the prerequisites for medical school are in my degree plan so it makes sense for me to stick with this instead of taking the psychology route and having to do all the classes for that on top of the prerequisites for medical school. I don’t know if it is like this at every school but at my college there are prerequisites to the prerequisites LMAO. So it makes sense to me to just focus on the science classes rather than add on psychology classes as well. I am planning on minoring in psychology though
