    The advantage of higher charging speeds seems to be only up to 29% SOC maximum. Afterwards it is the same charging curve as before. Negligible time difference when you charge up to 80%. Both take 34minutes. To me it's disappointing.

      There's probably no underlying change to the battery. It just means that you can do a quick 30% charge if that's all you actually need.

      Currently they cannot do this via OTA.

    The "small battery" ID.3 with that charging would be a nice upgrade for my VW e-Golf.

    • @richardpetek712
      @richardpetek712 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only option is to sell the e-Golf, which is a decent daily commuter, but nothing more, and replace it with the VW ID.3 with the battery you choose.
      Even the small one is surprisingly good, but that's because the battery is software-limited to a smaller capacity, but it actually charges like a 55 kWh battery - not much smaller than the 62 kWh medium-sized brother. Ideally making 120-140 km hops between HPC chargers while charging to 70% or maybe 80% in 20-25 minutes can make it a decent car for road trips too. The same is (of course) also valid for the Citroen e-C4.
      Look at the results of this test:

    I think if more of us travell in year between 10-15 000 km, the small baterry is much beter. I'm from Bulgaria, our distance form Sofia-Varna ( sea) is 400km. This is one of the most longer roads. For me is not need a big battery if the small is charged much faster. If i travell long distance, i stoped after 2 hour to coffe and toalet. And this is good time to charge for 15-20 minets and go to the end. With 90/110 km/h i think the small batery is great

    if I am not wrong MEB platform adopts LG chem cells with 3,65V and 78Ah, each module contains 24 cells, thus the following configurations should be possible:
    7 packs = 48kWh gross capacity -> advertised as 45 kWh net capacity (only on Id.3)
    8 packs = 55kWh gross capacity -> advertised as 52 kWh net capacity (only on Id.4)
    9 packs = 62kWh gross capacity -> advertised as 58 kWh net capacity (only on Id.3)
    12 packs =82kWh gross capacity -> advertised as 77 kWh net capacity(on Id.3&Id.4)
    why are you talking about and Id.3 with 55kWh?...it should be only for Id.4

This video did make me happy though, I have an ID3 first plus and was feeling like I missed out on a big improvement which is not the case.

    Well let's look at the plain results for the new vs. the old one. Obv. having a bit more capacity is great, but chargingwise let's see...
    10 mins: new one has ~1.9kwh charged more, which translates to ~ 9-14 km of extra range (90 vs 120km/h efficiency from Björns tests for those values).
    It's not much but might actually help, then again the old one only charges 1 minute longer to get the same.
    20 mins: Actually the newer has now dropped it's lead, only 1.5kwh more in the battery, which again translate to saving ~ 1 minute compared to the old one.
    30 mins: ~1,3kwh more, this would be ~ 6-9 km extra range charged in the same time now. It does take nearly 2 minutes for the old one to catch up though.
    Both then hit 80% at around 34 minutes, having recharged 210-320 (new) and 205-311 (old) km of range.
    So after 34 minutes the difference in range when driving 120 km/h is only 5 km.. And if we would charge from 20-80% instead of 10-80% the new charging curve is arguably worse, because most of the lead the newer version had was because of the charging from 10-20% (~ 1.5 kwh lead).. I think the new charging curve is really only good if you drive the car below 10% and don't charge up to 80%, maybe only 60% and then go. Otherwise the old one could even be better...
    Not sure what to think about it, this seems more like an advertisement stunt than an actual improvement.
    As others already mentioned in the comments, they want to have that "charging with up to 130kwh" to advertise the car, when pretty much nothing changed for the customers.
    Then again I didn't have too high expecations and 1% increase in range at every charging stop+ a bit more capacity is still better than nothing :D

    • @Muskar2
      @Muskar2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are the actual capacities of the battery. But since these kinds of batteries take damage if deeply discharged for extended periods and also don't like to sit at 100%, consumers don't get control over the full range of the battery and the numbers VW quote are the *available capacity* numbers. Actual capacity is only relevant if you're nerding out. I'm guessing he mentioned them because it can clue you in to how responsible it is for VW to charge 30kW at 99%. If there was only a small buffer, then it might be a bad design. But if you don't want to make those speculations, available capacity is all you need to care about, I think.

      @andreaaiello7561 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Muskar2 uhm... in my opinion he mentioned the REAL capacity instead of AVAIABLE, for compare data with competitors. In fact (if I do not wrong) Tesla declare the total capacity, not the avaiable. Did he test the medium range or the entry level id3 in the last video (1000 km, 55 kwh)?

    I ordered the ID.3 Tour 5 last week in April, still no sign of it!!! absolutely shocking!!!
    Anyway, my 2017 94 Ah BMW i3 has a much better charging curve!
    Has the 82 Kwh got this update for faster charging because as far as I remember that tops out at 120 Kw it would be rather stupid to now have a situation where the largest battery car would have less max power.
    But either way that charging curve on both ID cars is shameful in 2021.

  • @tkermi
    @tkermi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There really isn't any certain 100% point though. It depends on how much the battery is pushed. Like for a normal 3,7V nominal cell some could consider 4,15V to be 100%, but it could also be seen to be 4,20V, 4,25V or even 4,30V.

      Just do the maths. 200km x 0.17 kWh/km (highway consumption estimate) = 34 kWh, and you want that in 10min. So x6 to get an hour = 204kW average charging speed needed for that claim (204kWh/h= 204kW).
      But for slow roads, you'd get maybe 0.13 kWh/km, then you'd only need 156kW charging speed. Almost possible when the battery was near empty, but those charging speeds can't be sustained for 26kWh or "200km" (or let's say up to 50%).
      So: "no" is the correct answer 😁
