Hey Walt, just build my first Rybakov 806 Vertical using a T140-43 with 10 turns of 18 gauge magnet wire, a BNC Female to Dual Banana Female Socket Binding Post, 26 foot vertical element, and 4 radials about 12ft each. I taped the radiating element to a 33 foot Spider Beam. Picked up contacts on 12, 15, 17, 20, and 40 meters all reporting 55 or better up and down the East coast and out to California from Michigan. The 4:1 match was perfect for my Xeigu G-90's internal tuner. You were spot on when you said this is a great antenna. I will be putting the Rybakov and my 40-10 meter EFHW up for winter field day. With a vertical and horizontal both performing so well I'm sure to have a lot of fun working stations all over the US and beyond. Thanks for the videos you've been posting, I began my HF work prior to you tube and struggled with getting a good antenna in the air. You and all the others who put the time in to bring new ideas to the table sure make a difference to the Amateur Radio Community. Thanks for all you do, 73 AD8MP, David.
Hi Walt thanks for the video. I built mine last week. The tip is approx 9m above the ground hanging in a tree with 6x 5m radials. Utterly blown away. I managed a QSO on 10W into Germany on 10m band (55 both ways) 9850km from my QTH. Happy new Year. Best 73 DE ZS6AKW.

@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Just built one today and will take it to a park soon. built one of these recently, though mine's a modified version. In the Dec. 2013 final edition of his Monitoring Times magazine, Bob Grove W8JHD mentiones what he called "best and cheapest shortwave receiving antenna you’ll ever need" which was 24' of electrical cord or speaker wire with 5' removed from one side. That's what I'm using for the radiator, so I call mine a Bobgrovakov. I only have room for 2 radials which are around 7m long facing roughly north-south. I'm RX only for the time being so I have no idea how or if this thing will radiate, but it works great for receiving. The other day on FT8 on 20m I got every continent except Antarctica.
So coincidental Walt, after a 2 meter rag chew net here around Clayton NC, I got a call from k4sdv, after mentioning the trusdx on the net and he mentioned the Rybakov antenna. Then he said he had a qso with a guy in Hawaii that was qrp on the beach using a vertical with a counter poise dropped into the salt water that amplified his signal. I said that sounds like Walt k4gog, he was in Hawaii a while ago, he came back with, is he out of Virginia Beach? I said yep, that's him! I turned him on to your TH-cam channel. Hope to catch you on the air one day myself, ko4fud 73!
Thanks Cameron! it's a small world in ham radio. BTW, my grandparents were farmers near you and I spent all my summers on the farm growing up in Wilson County. I know your area well.
Bought one as Pro Whip. Managed Japan using RTTY and the New York repeater on 10M in 2007-8. Good antennas for the price. What you need now is another pole and use the unun as a loop and you can also have fun using it that way.
Man this is really good idea. I may try putting one up in a tree at the QTH. It seems like you can play around with the number and length of the ground radials. Very cool!

The property here has some shortcomings that makes putting up decent antennas difficult at best. Small House, Small City Lot, No Trees, not even ONE. Single story home, but stand up attic so most of my antennas are dipoles in the attic, as in 6-20 meters. I have tried 30 and 40 and as long as I can get them working once I fold them around corners etc, they work but not great. Luckily I had a shorter painter's pole I was able to stick out the attic window and point it upwards just enough to get just enough height from the ground to the top of that pole. But no way to get a much bigger pole out that window so can have 80 meters as well. HOWEVER the 4:1 unun I used was from my original S9 vertical I bought years ago, and at that time I also bought their 80 meter loading coil. Would that work on this antenna? So I grabbed it and stuck it in the rest of the mish mosh, SWR on all bands 6-80 at less than 1.5:1, using an autotuner of course. 80m signals I'm hearing are nice and strong, sounds hopeful. Bands are not in good shape here, and hearing lots of people complaining about it, so I know it's not the antenna. Tomorrow will give it a shot and see if it's transmitting as good as it's receiving. If it is, I think I'll use the money I've been saving to buy a store built vertical to buy a bigger pole and run this antenna in the yard instead of in the middle of my driveway! I need to go buy groceries soon and hate the thought of taking the antenna down and putting back up just to buy groceries. Thank GOD I'm not married!!
Good video, and great job on the Rybakov. I’ve have great success with this antenna and the Upper and Out. Out in the field, using information from Craig WB3GCK, easy to deploy for a inopportune “play radio”session. Great stuff. 73 M7PBX.
I made this yesterday with a 10m fibreglass pole and 25ft wire with the LDG 4:1 but got confused and used a Balun but worked great with an ATU LDG sorry i need a Unun insured but the Balun works very very good and 1 counterpose at 5m under the grass works brilliant I'm very impressed with it, the 40m band has lost the noise it had before, it's a lot better all 5 9 plus on this antenna, my EFHW must be bringing noise in for somewhere. Thanks De 2E1FUE.
Quite an interesting presentation. Thanks for posting it. It reminded me of one I saw three years or so ago. See VE3BF’s 40 meter fishing pole antenna on YT. Very similar to the Rybakov except a 4:1 balun was used rather than an unun. Ps: first time I have seen a xiegu in action. Certainly not a KX3 but I like the display panel goodies.

I think that its Rus. name is a kind of marketing :) Similar antenna is known in R. as UA4PA vertical, but it uses more complicated coupler - a resonant oscillating circut.
Hi Walt, maybe when you get back stateside you could try one of these instead of the HF360 no radial one. You have the ground plane on the roof so no just attach the ground from the unun to it.
Love it! Maybe a good alternative for the dx commander...dont show Callum this video! Lol😂 So very cool how a little bit of wire can perform so nicely. I also have a G90 which ill need to put back i use again - it has been shelved since i got the ft-891. id love to try and do this builf. I have that exaxt un-un. But Unless i am at a park doing pota i do not have a lot of space at all to do a vertical with ground radials. You are very fortunate to have the yard to play with. How big a space did this antenna take up, like 15 ft diameter or so? Have you tried using a window screen as a ground radial field? Very small and convenient and apparently works well. KB9VBR and others have good vids on YT showing window screens being used in lieu of radials. Cheers and 73!
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Slide the bottom pole out a bit, lash the extensions to it including the antenna wire and push it up, correct? Also, have you consider Faraday cloth as the ground plane instead of wires?
You could call it a "Piscator" if you don't want to call it by a Russian name for some reason. ;) SOTABeams has (or had) 3d printed guy line rings that fit over the top and stop when the ring reaches a big enough segment. I use one and it works well to keep things from bouncing too much in the wind. I'm tempted to make this antenna now because of this video. I even have that exact 4:1 balun sitting here.
My Rybakov works great if I bring the swr down with my old (1975) MFJ manual tuner ahead of my IC7300. I'm using the LDG 4:1 UNUN...8X, 15 ' ground radials, 30' RG58 coax. Next, I'd like to add a home- made (13 turns speaker wire on a torrid) current choke ahead of my tuner.
Hi Walt, you've given me an idea for a portable antenna to play with made from existing kit I have, going to do a variation of the theme to the Rybakov using my 17 foot telescopic whip into its ground anchor but still using a 4:1 unun and counterpoise wire's, might even put the slide winder loading coil in for good measure.
Hi how are you today? I had a lot of beams. I sold everything when I moved house. Now I start all again but I will not spend a lot of money in antennas. Do you advice any good vertical to be my principal antenna? I made a T2LT for 10m Now Im looking for 20m . A multiband will be great but Im not good to build antennas. Thanks in advance
Partly, I have a problem with the rybakov antenna, which I made myself according to... project online. However, my G90 tunes the antenna only in the 10-meter band and barely in the 20-meter band. The box cannot handle the remaining bands. The only difference I made was to use the FT-140-43 core in the unun. Maybe someone can advise.
walt you have inspired me to make a rybakov antenna for field day. does it require a tuner? i have a 12m spider beam vertical support what length would you recommend to work most bands? I also have a 4:1 and a 9:1 unun. any recomedations on length of the vertical ? Thanks
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES I do enjoy running verticals, the only thing that has kept me away from them is the manual tuning or them so frequently being monobanders 😉
The swr meter in the g90 seems to show very low numbers with long runs of cable. I was thinking I had a magic antenna until I plugged in the mfj meter and things looked closer to normal
@COASTAL WAVES & WIRES the radio you using is pretty awesome g90. If you would have a chance to go higher with the price and quality what would be your next choice? I am new to all this. I really appreciate your answers
@COASTAL WAVES & WIRES one last question good man. Can ft891 or xiegu g90 get coupled with anytone AnyTone AT-D878UVII Plus. I mean not coupled but transmitting from ft891 to anytone hand radio
This antenna was meant to be a ground mounted antenna. Raising it will actually decrease its effectiveness. For a raised vertical take a look at some commercial alternatives with fixed radials
I'm going to try this i have the 9:1 up on a 7m pole does great EFHW but I'm going to try this I have the 4:1 LDG I tried a loop messing about cool indeed :)
I've checked everywhere and I cannot find that unit. It must be only sold in Europe. I am also starting to believe in that radio. The G90 is the ticket..
It's a great antenna - Mine is 16 m in an inverted L - works 80-6. Insertion loss is reasonable as is efficiency. I have it connected to a radial field shared with a 1/4 wave vertical. It's a little down on the 1/4 wave but not much !!!
Noooo! You like this better than your Sigma HF360? That's not good! Lol! But seriously, it looks like a very doable vertical antenna that gets the job done. Nice!
My Sigma does pretty well on 10 meter. I've hit Europe quite a lot from the east coast. It is a little weak on receiving though. As you said though, it's best on 20. And...wait for it - I'm using the Plus Kit! Wanna borrow it?😂
It baffles me why there's no ham TH-camr who ever does evaluations to include 6 meters. There are millions of us who only go down as far as 6 meters and I'd think someone would realize this and grow their audiences by taking one extra minute to include a 6 meter test.
Rybakov doesnt mean a fisherman. fisherman is "rybak", to understand what is 'rybakov' (the word in the plural form!!) u have to imaging an object that belongs to fishermen. So 1) The fishermen have a net = U rybakov est set. who's got a net? so the word rybakov means that fishermen have something (plural), u cant use it without context.... better suggestion 'rybak antenna'
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES on top of it being a good radio, it has a built-in tuner, antenna analysis all in one box, you don't want to run over 40%duty cycle because it will get hot, that is the only downside it's even got a waterfall, for portable it is the ultimate.

Excellent, thanks for sharing.73.
Thanks for watching! 73, Walt K4OGO
Hi Walt, maybe when you get back stateside you could try one of these instead of the HF360 no radial one. You have the ground plane on the roof so no just attach the ground from the unun to it.
That’s a great idea!
Just built one the afternoon but condition aren't good so i will give it a try later this evening
Hopefully conditions will improve, it’s a great antenna
Love it! Maybe a good alternative for the dx commander...dont show Callum this video! Lol😂
So very cool how a little bit of wire can perform so nicely.
It took up about 30 feet diameter with the radials. I’ve seen the KB9VBR video but haven’t tried it yet. Get that G90 out!!! All the best and 73!
Do you have a video of how you add extensions to the Goture fishing rod?
No but what I do is slide the extension parts over the bottom pole and wrap the connection with tape.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Slide the bottom pole out a bit, lash the extensions to it including the antenna wire and push it up, correct? Also, have you consider Faraday cloth as the ground plane instead of wires?
Amazing performance.
Thanks for watching!
Hmmmm....need to go do some reading now....seems like a very good go-bag antenna.
Yes I think it would actually be a great go-bag antenna. I discovered it online, just do a Google search, there are a couple pages with info
You could call it a "Piscator" if you don't want to call it by a Russian name for some reason. ;)
SOTABeams has (or had) 3d printed guy line rings that fit over the top and stop when the ring reaches a big enough segment. I use one and it works well to keep things from bouncing too much in the wind. I'm tempted to make this antenna now because of this video. I even have that exact 4:1 balun sitting here.
Thanks for the info!
Hi: Do you know if that works with a 4:1 balun instead of a 4:1 unun? I thank you in advance. 73 from Brazil. Sergio, PS7CY
It may work but I'm not sure if it would work as well as an unun. It's not a balanced antenna so it really needs an unun. 73, Walt K4OGO
Sounds like a great experiment!
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES if it works I'll treat myself to a pint down the pub 🍻
@@adam-g7crq cheers!!
Very interesting antenna. It would be interesting to see it with your braided ground into the salt sea. Well done, Walt.😁😁😁
Yes that will happen!!!
Hey Walt, if you were only using the lower part of each band for CW and FT8 would you use a slightly longer wire or counterpoise? regards FOO (Steve)
Hi how are you today?
I had a lot of beams. I sold everything when I moved house.
Now I start all again but I will not spend a lot of money in antennas.
Do you advice any good vertical to be my principal antenna? I made a T2LT for 10m
Now Im looking for 20m . A multiband will be great but Im not good to build antennas.
Thanks in advance
I think the perfect principal vertical antenna would be a DX Commander:
dxcommander.com/product/dx-commander-80m/
Nice transceiver the G90
Yes it is! Very easy to travel with
Walt, thank you for the vid'...
Does your G90 tune this antenna? What other tuner do you use with your other QRP rigs to tune it?
73, Larry de KF4LBG
Hi Larry, my G90 tunes this thing perfectly. I als have a LDG AT-100 Pro II tuner that I use with my other radios. It's great. 73, Walt
Walt, do you use an in-line rf choke on your G90 with this Rybakov?
Yes, I do now. At the feedpoint
Is it possible to put up this antenna on roof top, Xeigu G90 radio here?
absolutely!
Very impressive, Walt! Such performance from a simple design! Have fun! DE AG4KN- John
Thanks John, it was a fun antenna! 73 my friend!
walt you have inspired me to make a rybakov antenna for field day. does it require a tuner? i have a 12m spider beam vertical support what length would you recommend to work most bands? I also have a 4:1 and a 9:1 unun. any recomedations on length of the vertical ? Thanks
Yes indeed, it requires a tuner
Another great antenna. Need to buy you and the wife a nice dinner if you are ever on S. Calif. 73 WA6MOW
Thank you Alan, we might take you up
On that someday my friend!
Love those thin poles, is it a fishing rod? Great videos by the way.
Yes they are collapsing fishing poles I found on Amazon: Goture Telescopic Tenkara Fishing... www.amazon.com/dp/B074M4Y4KT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Gotta try one of those 😊 Interesting video
Thanks for watching!
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES I do enjoy running verticals, the only thing that has kept me away from them is the manual tuning or them so frequently being monobanders 😉
Both radios and antenna were getting it done. 73 Walt KO4HPC :)
Yes it is a great setup! Thanks for watching my friend!
The swr meter in the g90 seems to show very low numbers with long runs of cable. I was thinking I had a magic antenna until I plugged in the mfj meter and things looked closer to normal
Cool antenna!👍
Ryba in Macedonian also means fish.🐟😁
Cool, I’m currently learning Polish and Rybak is fisherman here.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Nice, good to learn and realise that many European countries share some same and similar words.👍
What do you use to charge your LiFePo4 battery when portable
Hi Rohan, I use the small LifePo4 charger that came with my 6aH battery when I bought it.
Im here in France, trying to catch you on 40 ... F/AD2EM ... when are you on?
I’ll be on in the evenings this week, if you have a Twitter follow me and message me and we will make the contact @SaltyWaltHudson

What you think about this rig Chameleon 1.8-54 MHz Modular Portable Antenna System
It looks pretty awesome, would love to get one. Maybe in the future
@COASTAL WAVES & WIRES the radio you using is pretty awesome g90. If you would have a chance to go higher with the price and quality what would be your next choice? I am new to all this. I really appreciate your answers
@@andreyolenyk6253 would probably get a Yaesu FT-891. Great 100 watt portable rig
@COASTAL WAVES & WIRES thank you man.
@COASTAL WAVES & WIRES one last question good man. Can ft891 or xiegu g90 get coupled with anytone AnyTone AT-D878UVII Plus. I mean not coupled but transmitting from ft891 to anytone hand radio
Will the inbuilt 7300 tuner work?
Yes it should work well
I see you run at higher voltages around 15v. Does that help get a little more power or more power in more situations for you on the G90?
I’m thinking it might, this is a new small power supply I brought over with me and I set it at 15v this week to experiment.
Ler me ask: If I put antenna in a tower to give some heigh to the Mast how can I add counterpoise?
This antenna was meant to be a ground mounted antenna. Raising it will actually decrease its effectiveness. For a raised vertical take a look at some commercial alternatives with fixed radials
Very interested in the name and/or model of the pole you are using. Have a G90 on order, and would love to try the antenna. 73 KY4VD
I'm going to try this i have the 9:1 up on a 7m pole does great EFHW but I'm going to try this I have the 4:1 LDG I tried a loop messing about cool indeed :)
Awesome, good luck!
A 7.5 mtr vertical will resonate on 30mtr as a 1/4 wave and 10mtr as 3/4 wave .... with out balun , what will change with the 4:1 balun?
Well this is a 7.6 meter antenna that covers more than 30 and 10. Slightly different in length and thus the 4:1
I built this and it works 6-40
I've checked everywhere and I cannot find that unit. It must be only sold in Europe. I am also starting to believe in that radio. The G90 is the ticket..
I bought the 4:1 unun from DX Engineering in the States, I got the radio from Radioddity in the States.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES I wonder why Google didn't find it?? That will be the first.
Wow, the NY station sounded like a local
That was a great QSO, I couldn’t believe I broke the pileup!
Is this antenna able to run 100w ssb?
Yes absolutely
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES thank you!
It's a great antenna - Mine is 16 m in an inverted L - works 80-6. Insertion loss is reasonable as is efficiency. I have it connected to a radial field shared with a 1/4 wave vertical. It's a little down on the 1/4 wave but not much !!!
Awesome! Thanks for watching
Noooo! You like this better than your Sigma HF360? That's not good! Lol! But seriously, it looks like a very doable vertical antenna that gets the job done. Nice!
Yes this was a fun portable antenna, I wish my HF360 performed on 10 meters this well lol
My Sigma does pretty well on 10 meter. I've hit Europe quite a lot from the east coast. It is a little weak on receiving though. As you said though, it's best on 20. And...wait for it - I'm using the Plus Kit! Wanna borrow it?😂
@@jimcav1013 hahaha I’m thinking about getting one
Walt 2e0ilf here i have a spare 49:1 unun would this work
Not at that length, 49:1 is suited for a EFHW. Impedance for this antenna only requires a 4:1 for a match
Thx wslt 73
No choke ?
It like all other antennas will work without a choke, you will be better results with a choke
Seems like a really simple antenna to build!
Super easy! Hardest part was measuring the wire lol
Will try one here Walt. Your AGC setting is too fast for SSB.
Yes I play with the AGC often and that setting may have given me a better reception at one point and I just left it there.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES on SSB, a fast agc lets too much noise slip through between words, which is what I heard on your video. Fast is best for cw
It baffles me why there's no ham TH-camr who ever does evaluations to include 6 meters. There are millions of us who only go down as far as 6 meters and I'd think someone would realize this and grow their audiences by taking one extra minute to include a 6 meter test.
hello walt......KE8SAF
Hello James!!!
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES that’s a cool antenna. May have to build me one. I am renting a trailer so I’d have to hide it in back…. Lol

Yep, I was probably jumping around the bands and tinkering, normally set to S
The name of the type antena is a joke, I suppose. Rybak, in many slavic rlanguages means Fisherman.
73! de SP8PMS
Rybakov doesnt mean a fisherman. fisherman is "rybak", to understand what is 'rybakov' (the word in the plural form!!) u have to imaging an object that belongs to fishermen. So
1) The fishermen have a net = U rybakov est set. who's got a net? so the word rybakov means that fishermen have something (plural), u cant use it without context.... better suggestion
'rybak antenna'
Don't complain to Walt, complain to the guy who invented and named the antenna
I love my g90
So do I, it's a great radio, especially for travel and portable ops!
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES I use it for portable, it's awesome 👌
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES on top of it being a good radio, it has a built-in tuner, antenna analysis all in one box, you don't want to run over 40%duty cycle because it will get hot, that is the only downside it's even got a waterfall, for portable it is the ultimate.
