Matt Canada is the reason why. Opposing DB's were placing side bets on how accurately they could guess the exact play based on personnel and sequencing.
Kenny's weak arm and tiny hands prevented him From threatening the deep middle of the field, especially when rolling + throwing with unused feet. Diontae rarely had open space & Pickens bendy catches along the sidelines were not bankable
Mike tomlin keeping canada around for as long as he did. And not having veteran qbs or qb coaches around him. Matt canada having one of the most legendary shitty, predictable offensive playbooks in nfl history. Then kennys confidence going to shit and snowballing into aton of bad habits. Then ultimatly his ego not letting him take a back seat to learn and grow. After mike tomlin handed him the keys to the offense, which he really didnt earn in the first place
It's not all off the blame of Pickett, but the original sin was caused by whoever hired, and kept Canada for nearly 3 seaons, the worst oc in nfl history. Imagine if any other "great qb" had the worst oc in nfl history for there first 2 seasons? And there was no other offensive mind in the steelers franchise...besides Canada, you realize how bad that is?
I would have liked to see them give him one more year with a new OC but when he decided to sit out instead of backup Rudolph his character flaws rubbed the Steelers management the wrong way
Steelers gambled that his senior season was a breakthrough in his level of play. Instead it appears to be a high water mark. He can win if games go a certain way, but he’s not a franchise guy.
The plays he processed quickly tends to be man, which credits to him, he has the arm talent to throw guys open on occassion, like the back shoulder to GP. Yet, those are few and far between. He could not read zone and the accuracy was all over the places. He just miraculously have the Tim Tebow clutch gene, and that is clearly not enough. Plus, he was pretty glassy in terms of health (though Matt Canada and the oline did not did him any favour.)
He didn't work out (staying on the team) cus he was mad they started Rudolph late last year and then the team went and got a veteran QB in the offseason. He then asked for a trade out of spite If you're asking why he didn't do well playing, its because of Matt Canada and the horrible play calling he had to deal with for a year and a half
Canada was Pickett's problem. Author Smith, imo, would have helped him big time. But when he didn't want to COMPETE.... I was done with him. His come from behind wins gave me hope. But his ATTITUDE at the end of the season was beyond disappointing.
The problem was Kenny thought he was a number one QB and to be honest he's probably a number 3 QB and Kenny couldn't get that through his thick skull and cried his way out of Pittsburgh Kenny would still be a Steeler if he had shut up and stopped being a me person and learned the game on NFL football from a HOF QB in Russell Wilson I don't see him staying in the NFL outside his rookie contract unless he changes his attitude to his teammates and coaches the Canada offense sucked so hopefully he'll shut up and act like he's been there before in Philadelphia and the OC likes him but I'm guessing no his me personality is going to show 😂
After seeing him play with the Eagles I don’t think he’s even gonna make backup QB. They are already talking about trading him. He’s practice squad material at best.
Bc he's a terrible processor of information when he needs(ed) to be truly elite mentally to overcome his piss poor arm strength/whopper hands. He had some of the worst happy feet I've ever seen, & his favorite activity in Pittsburgh was bailing from clean pockets - oh & missing 33% of his starts from taking average hits from NFL defenders after bailing from said clean pockets. He refused to throw anywhere but outside the numbers for whatever strange reason, & I never saw him anticipate an opening window & throw into it inside the numbers. He thought he was wayyy better than he actually was (Mason Rudolph is clearly more mentally & physically talented), & to be fair, he did probably have the worst OC in NFL history. That should be a major stain on Tomlin's legacy, bc I wouldn't let Matt Canada park my car. That said, Kenny Pickett was drafted about 7 rounds too early, he was a fringe late round pick until he got Jordan Addison at Pitt. He'll fizzle out of the NFL the same way late round picks do at the end of his rookie contract. Pittsburgh made the 2nd biggest draft mistake in it's history bc of not wanting to repeat the 1st biggest mistake, passing on Pitt's Dan Marino.
I don’t really think it’s that odd. Here’s the thing Steelers know Football. Kenny for all the okay he was wasn’t good. His accuracy was all over the place (to the point. Where Russ and Fields isn’t really a step backwards) He couldn’t read a defense properly (which many young QB’s struggle with but still not great) He consistently flee’d solid pockets. Also he didn’t want to compete with a higher level of competition. How are you suppose to battle Mahomes, Allen, Even Lamar or Burrow in the AFC when you don’t even want to beat out Russel Wilson. The SINGLE most damning thing was how his teammates reacted to his issues. It wasn’t lifting him up, it was complaining. That tells he wasn’t a true leader. Steeler as a team rely heavily on Player leadership and accountability. He is a backup level talent. And his ability to be clutch and not turn the ball over is a valuable trait but it is backup. He ain’t elevating anything.
My problem with KP is that on every play you showed as a negative where he made a poor game management decision Is I can see an open man to move the sticks…

The draft experts always make more out of the QB's than any position. They way over reached on Kenny Picket's evaluation. He was not really that talented to begin with And had average arm strength and accuracy. They definitely missed on evaluating his character and work ethic.
