I remember renting this concert on VHS (yep that long ago) and watched it with a few buddies. Most of them never seen Rush or heard them live at the time.... or even cared lol. This song opens, and within a couple minutes everyone's jaws were on the floor. I'll never forget it.
I am so fortunate to have been born in 1961 where all these great great classic rock band were all the shit. Growing up as a teen in the last 70's. I would not trade that for anything. When the cops made you dump your beer out and gave you rides home (that happened twice). Such a great era.
As a 16 year old girl, I have to say I'd give just about anything to be from that Era. I can't stand most of the people and how they act today. And I could have seen Zeppelin. So that's another big plus haha
"I have no heart to lie, I cant pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend". Not only is this the greatest RUSH song, but that line is probably the most authentic lyrics in the history of music!! Fuckin love this song!!
I literally saw like 20 comments about his voice... he's 61 years old.. of course it'll change.. 30 plus years of rush.. his voice will change Rush still kicks ass
Early MTV staple video. This is the song and the video that got me into Rush when I was 13 and I never looked back. Seen them about 14 times beginning in 1984, but there was always something about Exit Stage Left that none of the times I saw them on stage in person could quite equal. Could anyone who saw them on this tour verify for me that this was in fact their best tour? because to me it sure seems like it.
I read an awful lot about the talent level of Rush. Let me just say for a four, or five man band to make anything close to what Rush consistently puts out would be amazing! These three are all at the top of their respective individual crafts when it comes to talent, Lee, Lifeson, and Pert All RULE, and together form one of the BEST ROCK BANDS EVER!!!!!
Geddy lee's voice is perfect right here!! Im not saying that is voice was not good in other shows..... but in this performance that's absolutely beyond perfect!
@EverydayAdventures i hit 5 shows this year already, and have 7 more to go, every show sounds like they're making the live cd right there on the spot!!!! people just stand there awestruck with their jaws open like we're all watching them play through the glass of a studio, but it's a concert!!!!!!! this is their legacy.
So like this era of Rush music better than what they're turning out now....or have turned out for last 20 yrs. Limelight, Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, Closer to the Heart, Trees, 2112 Freewill and anything up to Grace Under Pressure are what I remember and like about Rush. Just saying
There is nothing better than Alex's tone on the chorus where he picks to "living in the limelight". I can get his tone perfectly when I phase out my bridge pickup (volume pot pops up) and now I know that it's due to him playing this strat with single coil pickups! I'm not a big fan of single coils but they sure do shine here!
While I do miss Geddy's high voice too, it's mainly because of the many years of touring that has changed his voice. It happens to everyone. I just wished that they tuned down their instruments so his voice would fit more easily. They don't need to stick with Standard tuning all the time. Even after 40 years of playing together.
I love the way Geddy sings "can still be open hearted." Different from the studio recording and so comforting to my ears. Shit. Sorry, wrong song (Spirit of Radio), but you get my meaning.
Neil is wearing a short sleeved shirt, vest and bow tie. He looks like an Old West bartender, or maybe a member of a barbershop quartet. I'd just as soon forget some things about the 80's.
He used his "Hentor Sportscaster" a lot in the '80s and I don't know why he stopped using them. They're a lot lighter than the Les Pauls he uses today and both guitars are outfitted with the same technology, a Floyd Rose. But, ya know, whatever works for Mr. Lifeson.
I saw Geddy Lee talking about how he doesn't really like the "Exit Stage Left" album as a whole because it feels like it's being recorded in a studio. He means that it doesn't even seem like there's a crowd cheering and singing along. I see where he's coming from. This entire album is lifeless, for a live album. It's still a good record, but it seems flat...
I think that's very inaccurate, Geddy may have said what he said about the album but IMHO Exit Stage Left is one of the best live albums ever and if at any part does it sound like they're playing in the studio its because how how well they're playing together.
+Greg Cushing What I'm saying is that if you listen to E...SL and ATWAS side by side, you can tell that they went back and fixed a lot in the studio, and consequently, that took away a lot of the crowd noise.
+Conor Reed maybe on some songs but xanadu, spirit of radio and closer to the heart are classic examples of a rush audience plus limelight and red barchetta were played on rotation on much much music so those two were for sure edited as well as the album vs the DVD/vhs I mean limelight isn't even on the album and spirit of radio isn't on the DVD
+Conor Reed I think he meant that there was many "fixes" - re recording of parts of the vocals, guitars etc - done in post production. The drums were the only instrument untouched.
Just a few 3 man bands are this good.... ZZtop, Double trouble...??? give me some help. But no band are as funny, goofy and solid as these guys...Rock on Rush!!!
i honestly don't care if Rush gets in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame or not, if they do great. But they don't care, and i certainly don't either since honestly what does being in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame even mean? Nothing, It's a joke.
This video is precious. This IS truly....Rush at "The TOP OF THEIR GAME"
I remember renting this concert on VHS (yep that long ago) and watched it with a few buddies. Most of them never seen Rush or heard them live at the time.... or even cared lol. This song opens, and within a couple minutes everyone's jaws were on the floor. I'll never forget it.
Geddy Lee's voice here is really clear and pure. An awesome performance of a great song by a legendary band.
I love these guys, yes, truly humble, creative artists/musicians, and a wonderful group with genius and creativity; Great!!!!
Geddy Lee is always so polite and humble, when he adresses the audience. So canadian.
Rush in their prime. I never get tired of watching this performance. Just great!!
I am so fortunate to have been born in 1961 where all these great great classic rock band were all the shit. Growing up as a teen in the last 70's. I would not trade that for anything. When the cops made you dump your beer out and gave you rides home (that happened twice). Such a great era.

the absolute best collection of musicians banded together.....
I don't think I've ever heard a band that sounds so much like their album. Truly my pick for greatest band of all time.
This song gives me the chills every time I listen.
One of my all-time favourite guitar solos.
Rush has never played this song live as good as this. Geddy's voice is right on here. This is the best rush sounding concert i feel.
The solo in this song brings me to tears every time.
The cleanest playing live musicians on the planet.
Effortless brilliance here. It's just flowing out of the 3 of them w/ease
I literally saw like 20 comments about his voice... he's 61 years old.. of course it'll change.. 30 plus years of rush.. his voice will change
Rush still kicks ass
I love hearing that opening riff I get goosebumps every time
They're not just musicians but technicians too. Incredible.Alex is one of the best guitar players ever IMO
Saw these guys perform in Tacoma, Washington, in the mid 80's. They truly were "Rock Gods."
You from tacoma Celia? I live outside of Olympia.
This is one of the greatest live performances ever!
Gotta love the sound of the bass guitar here !!!
damn this just proves that old school music is better than now day's crap because no one has disliked it.
I remember seeing them when I was 7 years old for their Vapor Trails tour. My first show ever.
Early MTV staple video. This is the song and the video that got me into Rush when I was 13 and I never looked back. frankfurt germany 1983...i was there....outstanding show

You can feel the fucking energy in this performance!
BEST LIVE EVER...
This is it. The Pinnacle of their career. Exit Stage Left.
this is absolutely the best live version of limelight ever. geddy at least sings it here like the album ..
Rush - Always amazing, be it 1981, 1991, 2001 or 2011!
@EverydayAdventures i hit 5 shows this year already, and have 7 more to go, every show sounds like they're making the live cd right there on the spot!!!! people just stand there awestruck with their jaws open like we're all watching them play through the glass of a studio, but it's a concert!!!!!!! this is their legacy.
época em que música era simples e levada a sério... MUITO BOM !!!!
Favorite Rush song, followed by Time Stands Still. Who knows why? It's just closer to my heart than other tunes.
Talent.
That's what makes them sound good.
Greatest band of all time!
This sounds better than the album version hahaha. God i love Rush
I like that last part you said....."most talent band...ever......" well said! :-)
They still play beautifully these days.
Me too, Dallas, Tx 1981 17 yrs old.
God his voice sounds so good!!
Rush is a band with many talents
Near perfect execution by these guys! Guitar cords!!!
Alex manejando como reloj el loop al final del solo, perfecto!Grande Alex...por eso da sus saltos de satisfacción jajajajaja
Just saying
the great bassist Geddy Lee plays with a Rickenbacker as well .... this bass is amazing just the best 'viva' the Rickenbacker 4000...
acho q essa é a musica mais linda do mundo..RUSH É DEMAIS!
The bass is a late 70s Rickenbacker 4001 in Jetglo. A 4000 has only the treble pickup and a 4002 has the pickups located closer to the bridge.
such class !!
Perfect. 👏👏👏👏
Sigh....when Rush were truly great!
Fucking flawless
There is nothing better than Alex's tone on the chorus where he picks to "living in the limelight". I can get his tone perfectly when I phase out my bridge pickup (volume pot pops up) and now I know that it's due to him playing this strat with single coil pickups!
I'm not a big fan of single coils but they sure do shine here!
Alex is the guitarist lol
Francisco Jumpstyle You obviously don't know what single coil pickups or strats are. Has nothing to do with Geddy or Neil.
+GioGuitarDude Haha sorry I didnt read the whole thing
Francisco Jumpstyle All good bro!
Great song
Look at Geddy, rocking that bass young :')
they are the lead for the nominees right now!!! :D you can vote too!
Ganamead was a star that fizzled years ago throughout the arch of curvatures of ages herinhence and therewitherefore
The power sound bass! Rickenbacker!
It's a shame his voice is totally gone now....Rush was amazing back in the day.
His voice isn`t gone. It isn`t as good but it is amazing that Geddy can still hit those high notes.
BarronBrothersFilms More importantly he's still just as expressive.
While I do miss Geddy's high voice too, it's mainly because of the many years of touring that has changed his voice. It happens to everyone. I just wished that they tuned down their instruments so his voice would fit more easily. They don't need to stick with Standard tuning all the time. Even after 40 years of playing together.

Yeah they will
That last note of the solo is still ringing somewhere out in the Universe...
my dad was there(i think)!!Happy rush music
Neil is wearing a short sleeved shirt, vest and bow tie. He looks like an Old West bartender, or maybe a member of a barbershop quartet. I'd just as soon forget some things about the 80's.
My right ear loved the intro
Every single damn time :''/
algo mas que decir ? simplemente ........RUSH !!!
Rare to see Alex on a Strat. Fantastic performance.
He used his "Hentor Sportscaster" a lot in the '80s and I don't know why he stopped using them. They're a lot lighter than the Les Pauls he uses today and both guitars are outfitted with the same technology, a Floyd Rose. But, ya know, whatever works for Mr. Lifeson.
Geds voice is great here
How does alex get his tone for the intro?
aguante rushhhhhh!!!
Studio Version < Exit..Stage Left Version
this solo was un -composed totally improvised ,when this track was first recorded
a mark of a 6 string genius…
Emerson Lake and Palmer? Ever seen Emerson play with the Moog ribbon controller?
Neil poundin them drums and symbols........
it's interesting to see the 20th century cords attached to the guitars...lol!!!
ugh omg i always get cold at the solo..
The One Dislike Must Be The ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME......HEHE
that solo
They felt truly bad for it!! So to make up for the dislike, they inducted them into the HOF :D
Nice btw who is the girl in your profile pic? just curious...
Don't be mad at me but I seriously thought it was Louis from one direction in the beginning lol.. But I love this song a lot !!!!
ZZ top, Triumph.. two more 3 man bands.
I cried at 1:20
great fuckin song
and the other ones rolling stone magazine
It's a 4001 for sure. The 4000 only has one pickup.
I saw Geddy Lee talking about how he doesn't really like the "Exit Stage Left" album as a whole because it feels like it's being recorded in a studio. The actual DVD sounds so much better that's what the record should've sounded like
Just a few 3 man bands are this good.... ZZtop, Double trouble...??? give me some help. But no band are as funny, goofy and solid as these guys...Rock on Rush!!!
Actually a 4001 :)
@rooeeh The trees.
Oh my God look how young Neil is lol
@rockandrollmcdonalds Sure
i honestly don't care if Rush gets in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame or not, if they do great. But they don't care, and i certainly don't either since honestly what does being in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame even mean? Nothing, It's a joke.
the voice perfect the guitar feels a bit muted
sometimes i really wish i could pull off dressing like that for @ least a day.
Well, there's Geddy up there disproving that notion.
What kind of bass is geddy using here?
1980 placebo
