Welcome to DIY & GARDEN
Today I’m going to show you How to design and build an inexpensive system for growing plants in water.
Everything you need to know to start hydroponic garden
From building the system, starting seeds, plants nutrients and system maintenance.
Let’s Get Started
You will need 55-gallon plastic barrel a popular low-cost option.
There is a line in the centre of the barrel, Mark that line
These barrel are thick, you will need jigsaw or other power saw to cut them.
Wash and clean the barrel
You will need a foam boards to use them as Floating raft.
these foam boards can be cut to any shape
Measure and cut the board into rectangular 1Ft x 2 Ft.
Most leafy greens are grown with 6" spacing in hydroponic systems.
Brush away any loose foam pieces from the cut edge
Next drill a 55 mm hole
If you don’t have drill, you can use a knife to make the holes.
@DIYGARDENWITHBB
Drill all the boards, make sure the end holes not side by side
Use bricks to fix and stabilize the tanks
Fill the reservoir with water
You will need an Air pump, air stones, airline tubing ,4 mm Tee.
Air pump specification I’m using
Next cut two Pcs from the pipe each 3 Ft long, then connect them to the air stones and the tee
Connect the TEE to the pipe then to Air pump.
Put the stones in the water and turn on the air pump.
Add the foam boards
Adding Nutrient Solution
Add fertilizer (A & B) in small increments to avoid over fertilizing.
Check the EC after adding fertilizer and continue adding small amounts of fertilizer until the target EC is reached
Stir the reservoir to circulate the nutrient solution to disperse
the concentrated fertilizer after each addition
Measure the pH after reaching the target EC. Add pH down or pH up in small increments
Slowly adjust the pH until the meter readings are within the target range.
Net pots can be square or circular and generally range from 2 to 10 inches wide.
2- and 3-inch net pots, the most commonly used net pot sizes in DIY hydroponic systems.
Or simply you can use plastic cups, cut off the base.
Starting seeds
You need plastic plant pot, stretch wrap and seeds
Fill the pot with coco peat
Then Wet the coco peat
Sow the seeds, water
Use stretch wrap and cover the seeds
Most leafy greens can be grown in this system from transplant to harvest without any maintenance of the system.
Place the 2" net pots into the 2" holes in the raft.
Make sure the raft size so it comfortably fits inside the reservoir.
This design can be used as a model for smaller or larger floating raft gardens.
• Suitable Locations: Indoors, outdoors, or greenhouse
• Size: Small to large
Adding an air pump improve plant growth and reduce the risk of root rot

Awesome😀😀
Great channel and good content. I wish you success my friend. Good luck😘
thanks you ❣️
Thank you for such a detailed vdo. I have 2 doubts ..... 1) whether the air pump needs to be ON for 24 hours of the day? 2) Whether the roots won't rot when kept continuously in water for such a long time?
Hi there!
you're welcome you can use timer 15 min on 30 off . or on day time and off at night.
the roots won't rot when you use Air pump.
@@DIYGARDENWITHBB thank you
Great instructions. Question. If you leave your floating plants out like that, how do you keep pest like Rabbits, mice, slugs from eating them? Thank you.
hi there!
my system outside, fence your garden, if you can raise your system higher , for slugs, try to pasticide outside the garden, which will prevent them from entering.
Do you need to add additional nutrients solution to the reservoir of water after a certain time???
change the water every 3 weeks
How much fertilizer do you need for each system?
depends on your reservoir capacity...
Great video. I am about to setup a system in my backyard. Where do you buy the Styrofoam board. I checked home depot and Lowe and they don't have it.
And I scrolled down and saw someone’s question same as mine .. Thankyou for the information
That’s a cool system and simple enough .. mine is all upvc 4 inch and ten feet long and working very well and we all know how Seattle weather can be
Love your channel, can you share the total cost to start this process.
good job! I would like to ask how many times you changed the Nutrient solution to grow lettuce and also I would like to know the dosage used for making fertilizer A and B. Thanks
i haven't changed the water.
❤ hello I very much enjoyed your video .. I have a question about the air pumps ? Do I run them 24/7 or can I put on a timer and run every 15-30 min . Plz and thanks
Hi there!
you can use a timer for 15-30 min.
what is fertilizer A & B ?
It is a nutrient solution that contains all the nutrients needed by plants...
Nicely done!
thank you
Outstanding 😊
thank you
