To prevent mold in the wet pallet, I put several copper pennies under the paper around the edges. The copper prevents mold from growing. Also, I'm cheap, so I buy sponge air conditioner filters for the sponge and parchment paper for the paper. I get a pack of 200 papers already 12x16 size . Amazon.
Thank you! I'm a design student at my local college, but not familiar with painting and taking a course right now in painting- I must have missed this tip because I kept running into this problem and wasting so much paint and never felt I had time to blend it good. While watching this I realize I had some of this paper that came in my course kit! Thank you so much, this will help me out for the rest of the semester!
I'm going to get a wet pallet.Up till now I've used small containers with lids and stored them in the refrigerator. That also works for me, an 80 yr old gran!
I’m excited to start your 2024 class. The one thing I have the most problem with would be mixing my colors to get the right color I need. Clouds trees and shading is what I’m hoping to learn.
For me the Masterson stay wet palette is a God send. However I use a sheet of glass over the sponge so I can more easily clean off the paint I no longer need leaving a fresh area to mix the next color. My MSWP no longer seals a well as it use to so I also place a small sponge on top of the glass before closing it up when done painting.
Do you have the glass in-between the paper and the sponge or do you actually just use the glass as a palette? I ask because I'm switching over from using a glass pallete to the MSWP. I haven't used it yet. Just curious about your setup because it might be something I could like
Getting ready to use acrylic for the first time, have never touched them. Actually it's painting for the first time. I've drawn for years. I experimented many years ago, had all the equipment, and someone came along and stole all my art supplies. Haven't tried since, but I want a medium that can cover some area. I draw with colored ball point ink pens and it takes for ever to do anything large especially large areas with one color. I had oils but acrylic seems simpler, I don't want to start getting hung up on all the oil paints stuff, maybe later. Your videos are what I need, thanks Jed.
this was great info as I just received this new pallet. Very excited to give it a try. I live in very hot humid dry Panama SA and its been a struggle with my paints drying out.
I use paper plates. I use two. The top plate I cut a wash cloth the diameter of the eating surface and glue it the the top plate. I spray the cloth with water and use binder clamps to hold the plates together and put it in the fridge. The bottom plate is disposable. The top plate is not.
Hi, I have a question. I am a hobby artist & my art ideas comes from pintrest & my techniques from youtube tutorials. Now in many videos glazing medium, gloss medium & a variety of medium are used. I don't know if i should buy everything or not. & if I do buy it then how to use such mediums.... I hope you can share some of your insights on the matter. Thanks!
I see this is like a year old video so you probably aren’t responding to comments at this time but I would like to talk about keeping your brushes moist while painting with acrylics. I use a product that I dip my brushes into periodically while I’m painting and clean them off with it because just rinsing them in water sometimes isn’t enough. The Farrells have impacted paint and by the end of the day your brush is pretty much ruined if you’re painting outside in the heat of Florida. So this brush cleaner I take with me. Clean my brush off and work the cleanser in well and rinse it really well in the water and then go back to painting with it. I have to keep my brushes reasonably clean as I’m working with them outside. Even inside the house I will go to the sink and clean my brush periodically and then go back and use them some more. Because the acrylic paint dries out on the brush just like it does on the pallet. And you can run through a lot of brushes that way.
Cheryl, the only colors you really ever need are the primary colors, red, yellow, and blue, and white. Every other color is made from these colors. Pure black is good to have to, but you can make many shades of "black" with blue and brown. Brown is made via equal parts of the primary colors. Making any color from primaries is very satisfying. Enjoy the process!
my biggest struggle is that I feel like i never have enough paint on my brush. It takes so much to make the canvas not show through. I'm using Merriy primed canvas pad. Is that not a good kind or do I just need to use more paint? I did your intro acrylic series (it was great, thank you!!) and it seems like your paint was covering your canvas more effectively than mine, as I followed.
Yes, I have tried paper towels, and they work great. I just fold them to be the correct size and make them 3 or 4 deep, and they work similarly to the sponge :-)
I have two of the Masterson Stay Wet palettes. One has a blue cover and one has a red cover and they are the same size. My problem is that the tops have warped and won't close tightly. I have the medium size palette/box and also the little Handy Palette. Both of the lids of the smaller palette boxes fit nice and airtight. Any idea how to remedy this without buying another palette box? Thanks.
finding the right plein air easel! I deposited $250 with Soltek last June......still waiting.... should I ask for refund? But then what's next. french easel has too many screws and tighteners//lol . Prolific Painter wont take calls..so how do you know what to order?? Wave seems to be for a small palette area....I wanted larger. ???? EnPlein air looked alittle unstable but expensive. So I'm asking you the best of the best Plein Air guy. What would you buy?
Great, informative video, Jed. I would like to create a stamp pad using acrylic paint, but not sure what to mix it with, or what pad to use. I was thinking using polyethylene glycol as a retardant and blank felt stamp pad. What do you think?
i bought the wrong one - didn't pay attention to size - so great tip about that! i have a small one. can't get used to it but will try with these tips! thanks!
Good questions. No, you don't need to store it in the fridge. I have a set of paints in the paint box that have been sitting around months and are still usable. Of course, in normal circumstances, you want to use them regularly, but if you do, they will last a long time. On the palette the paint will last for quite a while, too, but the problem there is that the moisture will dilute the consistency of the paint over time and also your paints can get moldy. I usually change my palette paper and paint every week.
Acrylic University by Jed Dorsey ok thx.. I had one of those pill cases n it doesn’t work that well lol I try to paint two times a week... can you send a link for those two things you suggest? Thx 😊
@@SharonTatum3 no I didn’t... I think it’s just an art box or a box construction people use to put nuts n bolts in. You probably can find that at the craft store or home depot.. the masterson thing I believe you can find at Blick but I’m sure other craft stores have it. Hope that helps
the problem many people have is that they want to paint with acrylic paint as if they had oil paint. But that is wrong. With acrylic paint you paint in a different way. A different technique is used. If you want to paint with acrylic paint as if you had oil paints, it is better to use oil paints straight away.
you can buy retarder to prevent to dry acrylic paint fast, but you can buy glycerine or propandiol, both mixed 50/50 is known as fogfluid for fog machines. 5% mixed to your color will retard your color for the next hours or day. the problem is that the color tacks not so good as before on your underground.

I’m disappointed in the new sta wet palette boxes as I used to be able to place the box on top of the lid. Now, you can’t, it’s all wobbly.

I agree with @mssusanmarie, but I use process colours, (CMY) and white, which allow very clean purples and pure turquoises etc.

One of my biggest struggles is how to make my acrylic landscape paintings look just as good as oil. I would like to have more blending time
Liquitex has a slow-dri blending medium. Golden acrylics has an acrylic paint retarder. There are diy recipes if you google it.
Instead of blending acrylic paints, I mix an in-between colour to soften the transition.
