Went to see "Girlfriend" this weekend and it was absolutely soul-satisfying!!!! The music is phenomenal, the acting is first class and the story is funny, poignant and so enlightening for many theater patrons. I would rate this show FIVE STARS!!! Wish I could go back and see it again!
t saw it last night in L.A.....and it took me back to my late teens and the emotional chaos I noticed coming out. This is a sweet, tender, funny, heart rending piece of theatre that deserves to run for a long time in as many theatres as can hold it's ebullience and charm!!!!!! BRAVO
this musical is my boyfriend's favorite thing and idk. things are rough with our family life often (tale as old as time for a queer teen) but I still this musical is our escape.
Ok, I just learned that there was a theatrical adaptation of Matthew's album tonight. And I must admit, I'm a bit confused. I didn't see the play. But is this adaptation centered around a gay male couple finding love? That's great, but that's not Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend". It was very clearly about a man wanting a good female friend, a.k.a. a "girlfriend". I mean, when we take a close look at things, what is really happening here? I understand that Matthew himself was involved in this project?!? I am surprised he would allow an adaptation like this to change the direction of what he originally wrote. It should have kept true to the original work. I'd still like to see a video of this full performance to judge it objectively.
The comments section of TH-cam is a little constricting to be able to answer you concerns, but I'll try: Matthew Sweet as far as I know did not involve himself in the project (as in, beyond giving Todd Almond his blessing, approving the licensing of the songs, and enjoying the musical himself). But he has been very supportive of it. I'm sure that artists appreciate their music being more universal than the intended literal interpretation of the songs. These are very creative people behind the project and even though it wouldn't be terribly boring to write a musical precisely about Matthew Sweet's marriage, it's not very clever. You already know what happened and can predict which songs go where without having watched such a musical. They did a good job of reinterpreting the songs, with mayyyybe the exception of "Evangeline", which was kinda flimsily put in there. Give it a chance if it's playing in your area, you won't be disappointed. Dare I say you might even feel a tear or two coming on as "Winona" starta to play...
Thanks for the explanation. I do think that an interesting play could have been made about the subjects and circumstances surrounding his original songs, about his life. It made a great album and I'm sure someone could have done it. But that's cool that Mr. Almond did his adaptation of it. Hopefully it introduced some new fans to the album.
