his practice sessions are good enough to win the prize. i like how if he does fail on landing, he does it the 2nd time perfectly, awesome show of profesionalism
i loved his skating even back then. i think he is the only 'freestyler' that was able to stay 'on the scene' when it switched to mainly street. And why wouldn't he, after all, he is the godfather of all the tricks. Rock on Rodney! thanks for your contribution to the art of skating!
watchin videos of rodney mullen and jeremy wray gave me that extra boost to keep skating back in the day... damn good times.. wish i still had that drive... but i can still bust a few tricks now. good vid.
The guy is doing this way before our time with practically no pop or concave and still has the skillz to pay the billz. respect it all you groms out there.
as of dressing this movie is very old, i can remember a video from a competition Rodney Mullen participated in when he was like 15-18, and he does look like this guy :)
I've always said the same thing, Tony is flawless as a vert skater but there are others that can come close, I've never seen such eye candy as the tricks Rodney pulls however, I've shown people of all ages some of Rodneys videos and they are always stunned.
Yeah I agree, sometimes I think it should be named Rodney Mullens Skateboarding and so on. I mean you never hear in public that Rodney Mullen is the greatest and in most ways he is. And like you said, he invented most of the tricks that all skaters do today and should be enough to make him an own videogame or other reputation.
omg i still cant believe how amazing he is, back then, in the 80's, he was doing double flips, and it might not sound like alot, but back then there was no such thing as a kickflip, There was skateboarding, and hen there was rodney mullen, he was the only person in the world doing that now look at what skating is today, everyone doing the same stuff =/
It's from 1984, last contest of the year, Huntington Beach CA. Pisses me off when people put old videos up but don't list their date, or get the date wrong.
He invented the kickflip yes, and it was originally called the magic flip. However what most people dont know is that he invented the ollie on flat ground, before that people had to use ramps or boneless. He actually invented the 360 nollie before the ollie too.
one thing i think is amazing is that he has chuck Norris converse shoes. have you ever tried to stand in casper or anything in them?? it most hurt in the feet doing the things rodneys is doing.
tricks like rodneys usually need you to be able to feel the board pretty well. You usually dont get this with puffy shoes, and they also dont hold the board very much
To me, Mullens versatility with his flat-land tricks campared to Tony Hawk's vert tricks is like comparing an acrobat who can flip on a trampoline (tony with the half-pipe) to someone who can bust their moves anywhere, on concrete, on the street, the spontanaity and need for no other aperatus makes it much cooler & less contrived. I love Mullen's skills - I wish he'd made as much money from skating as Hawk has...
well i see that many people that have left comments on alot of his videos, believe that he "invented" every trick, well he hasn't the casper was invented by Bobby Casper Boyde, the primo slide was invented by Primo Desedario, The Crook Grind - Erik Koston The Street plants that you see him sometimes do was all invented by Yoyo Shulz, and a fun fact Rodney Used to skate vert till he broke his wrist, and has been skateboarding since January 1st 1977
Damn, his level is so high he could win world roundups today with something like that. Amazing how , as good as some modern freestylers are, Mullens's technique from 30 years ago is still unsurpassed...
How does he keep it connected to his feet when he jumps? lol. You know you're an old school skater when you remember that question being asked all the time.
they are not kidding around with rodney at all the fact is that they are watching rodney practice before a comp and they are talking about the person who is actually competing at the time we are watching rodney practice. so they are talking about someone else.
omg thats Eric the good he moved to California in the late 80s from Huddersfield in the north of England. His mother taught him all he knows .He then taught Rodney Mullen all he knows so i can see how all you people are getting mixed up. ps MULLEN ROCKS
this is frickin' insane. mullen invented the kickflip, if someone dusn't know. it was originally kalled the magic flip i believe. once again-this is crazy, but amazing. and just all around cool.
rodney mullen..is a fucking legend! sure..daewon's amazing too, but all round, rodeny is king! he invented half the tricks daewon does =d now that takes some skill...
as for caspers, truckstands and especially pogos, they were about in the old 'fish shaped', no nose, skateboarding days. nothing stops this being someone who's just exceptionally good at mullens tricks. and with that comment at 0.17 ... just cant help but think thats all it is.
Mind boggling!!! None of his vids fail to amaze me. Good lord
his practice sessions are good enough to win the prize. i like how if he does fail on landing, he does it the 2nd time perfectly, awesome show of profesionalism
Imagine Rodney on X-Game 15 for the free style skating, Rodney would win gold, silver, and bronze.
one word, beautiful...
Rodney, thanks a lot.
-Greg B. K.
this is the most amazing thing ive ever seen in my life
i loved his skating even back then. i think he is the only 'freestyler' that was able to stay 'on the scene' when it switched to mainly street. And why wouldn't he, after all, he is the godfather of all the tricks. Rock on Rodney! thanks for your contribution to the art of skating!
I have the entire footage on VHS from two separate days of this contest practice session. Lynn Cooper gave me a copy back in the late 1980s.
How classic is this video, Mullen is awesome.
watchin videos of rodney mullen and jeremy wray gave me that extra boost to keep skating back in the day... damn good times.. wish i still had that drive... but i can still bust a few tricks now. good vid.

The tricks are so cool they take your mind off his t-shirt.
I've always said the same thing, Tony is flawless as a vert skater but there are others that can come close, I've never seen such eye candy as the tricks Rodney pulls however, I've shown people of all ages some of Rodneys videos and they are always stunned.
i totally agree with you.. rodney makes skating look SO easy.. but yeah.. once you actually start skating.. its tough stuff..
Yeah I agree, sometimes I think it should be named Rodney Mullens Skateboarding and so on. I mean you never hear in public that Rodney Mullen is the greatest and in most ways he is. And like you said, he invented most of the tricks that all skaters do today and should be enough to make him an own videogame or other reputation.
my favourite video hes so cool man..
omg i still cant believe how amazing he is,
back then, in the 80's, he was doing double flips,

rodney's the best.. the best..the best.. forza italia..
man, he is so awesome, best skater in the world. (street) but he is the most influential skater there probably is
He invented the kickflip yes, and it was originally called the magic flip. However what most people dont know is that he invented the ollie on flat ground, before that people had to use ramps or boneless. He actually invented the 360 nollie before the ollie too.
oh yea, and those banana boards, i rode one, woah its a very different feeling than the enjoi's im used to
kickass
would you say he's gotten better or worse of the years?
even so, he's a living legend
i'm falling in love
Cool! video from the time when cutoff jeans and Allstars were skater-clothing =D
he did the way you see it today, the first person only got a couple inches and he did it on a vert.
this is rodney
hes the best skater of the world
That trick at 36 seconds was very cool.
Well, for a vid as popular as this, it sure does take a fucking long time to load.
Rodney is fucking king!
one thing i think is amazing is that he has chuck Norris converse shoes. have you ever tried to stand in casper or anything in them?? it most hurt in the feet doing the things rodneys is doing.
He does. I can ollie and almost do a heelflip (just can't catchthe board). Ollieing's hard to learn but once you learn it you can try so many things.
this is beyond abilities
ahahaha
tricks like rodneys usually need you to be able to feel the board pretty well. You usually dont get this with puffy shoes, and they also dont hold the board very much
oldies but goodies...great i mean
when was this video made?
To me, Mullens versatility with his flat-land tricks campared to Tony Hawk's vert tricks is like comparing an acrobat who can flip on a trampoline (tony with the half-pipe) to someone who can bust their moves anywhere, on concrete, on the street, the spontanaity and need for no other aperatus makes it much cooler & less contrived.
I love Mullen's skills - I wish he'd made as much money from skating as Hawk has...
The onlookers must think he's a freakin wizard. He pretty much is, 25 years later there are still few who can pull off those moves.
well i see that many people that have left comments on alot of his videos, believe that he "invented" every trick, well he hasn't the casper was invented by Bobby Casper Boyde, the primo slide was invented by Primo Desedario, The Crook Grind - Erik Koston The Street plants that you see him sometimes do was all invented by Yoyo Shulz, and a fun fact Rodney Used to skate vert till he broke his wrist, and has been skateboarding since January 1st 1977

Fakie Double Kick to truckstand.
skateboard king...no question...
How does he keep it connected to his feet when he jumps? lol. You know you're an old school skater when you remember that question being asked all the time.
Ooooow!!! 13 years ago
lol, back in those days, people were just learning how to kickflip. It's easy!(Then again, the boards back then had no pop)
how long is this vid it wont say how long u watch or how long it is thats cool!
rodney mullen é foda
hahahaha his shirt is so FREAKIN SmalL ahahahaha!!!!
But its amazing that he could do all those stuff
they are not kidding around with rodney at all the fact is that they are watching rodney practice before a comp and they are talking about the person who is actually competing at the time we are watching rodney practice. so they are talking about someone else.
its like ballet lessons
Rodney invented:Flatground Ollie,Godzilla Rail Flip,540 Shoveit,50-50 Saran Wrap,Helipop,Gazelle, No Handed 50-50 Kickflip,Heelflip,Double heelflip,Ollie Impossible,Sidewinders,360 Flip,360 pressure Flip,Casper 360 Flip,50-50 Sidewinder,One footed Ollie, Backside 180 Flip,Ollie Nosebones,Ollie Fingerflip,Airwalk,Frontside Heelflip Shoveit,Switchstance 360 Flip,Helipop Heelflip,Kickflip Underflip,Casper Slide,Half Flip Darkslide,
For Chrissakes, this footage is from 1985!
he did often practice alone, but in california he used to go by boardwalks and people would stop and watch him

i like to say that he was better back then....

he made up any skate trick worth knowing and the tricks done in this little video to this day can only be done by the master.
this is frickin' insane. mullen invented the kickflip, if someone dusn't know. it was originally kalled the magic flip i believe. once again-this is crazy, but amazing. and just all around cool.

He's a god amongst men

Alan gelfand invented a "vert" ollie, Mullen Re-inveted it for flatland
It is Rodney - you can tell from the style and everything. The guy that said that at 22 seconds was just joking.
is my idoll XD... yo quiero ser como el =)
540 double kickflip,Caballerial impossible,Half-cab kickflip underflip,Handstand flip,Rusty slide,Kickflip.
rodney mullen was the originator of street skating, hawk is the best at vert
as for caspers, truckstands and especially pogos, they were about in the old 'fish shaped', no nose, skateboarding days. nothing stops this being someone who's just exceptionally good at mullens tricks. and with that comment at 0.17 ... just cant help but think thats all it is.
That is rodney mullen guys, Look at the tape on his fingers.
Plus those are just his friends joking around. I read this somewhere...
i dont give a fuck what anyone Rodney Mullen is the best and most technical skater that ever lived
Look at that short t-shirt XD !!!!!!!!!!!
all rodney mullen is, is style. he came up with all those moves himself, so if anything, just about everyone else is using his style.
wow in the beginning it sayed "Rodney is gonna bum out this kid has all his moves"
this guy invented the fucking kickflip. i was gonna say ollie but he just discovered how to do that on the ground. still. fucking sick.
woh... u wouldnt think things like this would be still around.. espeshally for the publc to see
