Phantasy Star was my step into JRPGs. I would go over to my cousin's house who was 10 years older than me and I would watch him play. Great times and memories...RIP Jamie
For me, it was my friend Matt and his older brother, they were both big into RPGs whereas me and my older brother were always into action titles like Mega Man and Castlevania. Matt get me started with Final Fantasy 2 on the SNES when I was 10 years old, and over the course of a summer I borrowed pretty much all of their RPGs. I played through FF2 and 3, Breath of Fire, and Chrono Trigger that year, and I was hooked on JRPGs after that, especially on the PS1.
Aren’t it always the friends? :D For me it also was a good friend of mine and his older brother and they played FF8 on the good old PS1 when I came over one day. And after looking at it for five minutes I was hooked! 😅
@@CharlieTooHuman I was the guy who introduced a Matt to the world of gaming 30+ years ago. Had no idea of the chain of events I was setting into motion. 😂

Two legends. Amazing adventures. Rpg's have a foundation of bringing friends together. Whether it's tabletop, or adventure titles. But the memories last a lifetime too. Thanks for this awesome video My journey with rpgs began with the original Final Fantasy on the NES. I rented it for a weekend, had some friends over. We took turns figuring out strategies, and seeing where the adventure lead.
Perosna 3 is the game that made me fall in love with rpgs. Just the story and how fleshed out the characters where. I had never seen anything like it before. I honestly didn't know that games could make me feel emotional like P3 did
It was 5th grade and I loved my Super Nintendo but never played an RPG in my life. I was into Mario, Mega Man X, & Final Fight. Then a new friend I made comes over to my house for the very first time with the holy trinity of RPGs: Chrono Trigger, EarthBound and Secret of Mana. He was explaining how these games worked and it just blew my mind. Before he left, he said I could borrow one of them, so I picked Secret of Mana because it was more of an Action RPG, it had co-op and matched more of what I was into at the time. It was the game that really started the addiction for the rest of my life.
Oh man. I thought I’d get here and there wouldn’t already be a billion comments - so stoked you’ve started the show. The enthusiasm you and I have for gaming and perhaps more than that, the nostalgia, is infectious. Makes me feel less weird having my “room” decorated wall to wall with all the stuff that I loved as a kid. Keep it up - at some point it’ll probably be a bit of a grind, but remember there are people out there (me) that borderline depend on seeing you guys take trips down memory lane to combat the doldrums. To answer the question, I spent a week each summer with my cousins on their family farm and my older cousin was playing FF3(6) on the SNES, and while he wouldn’t ever let me play, I couldn’t stop watching him and going on the adventure vicariously. Funnily enough, he did let me play his old NES, where I discovered Zelda - and while not really an RPG, it was a close cousin (I’m here all week) and that started the tangible mini obsession.
This video had me smiling the whole way through! For me what got me into jrpgs was persona 4 golden. Getting a vita, I realized there were no games for it, but the internet told me persona 4 was a must. It’s been a good 4-5 years going back and playing everything I missed. Great vid!
Awesome episode! Some tips: bad eco, you need to fix that. The lightning bounces from bottom and creates bad shadows. Fix the eco and find another area to bounce the light from, or add an extra spot. Love you guys!
Looking good Rob, I'm digging the purple paisley. And this is such a great topic, I do have a clear memory of what got me started in JRPGs. Back in the day I had this school friend who was the only person I knew that played RPGs, and he would wax lyrical about how great they were and would fill my head with all this grandiose mental imagery. Eventually one wintery Winnipeg weekend I was invited over to his place to check out this game called Final Fantasy II on the Super Nintendo. He started the game up, and I believe he was at the part where you infiltrate that giant mechanical Golem. He showed me how combat worked, and how you level up and get stronger, etc. It was pretty interesting, but my family didn't have the money for a lot of stuff like this so that was kind of all I got to see for a long time. I came to RPGs quite late because of that. Didn't even know they existed cause we didn't get magazines either. Fast forward several years and I'm in a Roger's Video looking for some PS1 games to rent, and I come across two games. Final Fantasy 4 and Legend of Dragoon. Now that same friend had talked me up on this Dragoon game too, but I wanted to try out Final Fantasy as well. Imagine my surprise when I put in Final Fantasy 4, only to discover that it is the exact same game I saw on the Super Nintendo years before. I was pretty confused by that, but pleasantly surprised just the same. I tell you, when that first cave music in FF4 hit me...That was it. I was hooked.
Awesome episode. I'm not the biggest fan of JRPGs (just not my cup of tea) but hearing your and Johnny's passion for them is fantastic and is what gaming (and our gaming community) is all about 😀
I remember sleeping over at my friends house when he had monster rancher, now this thing about this game was you could put in random cds and youd get different monsters, so id bring over like 20 random music cds, just to see what monsters wed get. fun times
Oh man, I did this. I didn't have many CD's, but I would go through my Dad's and my older brothers CD. I got some really strong Nagas and was pumped. Now that I'm older I wonder if it was random or if it even mattered which disk. Lol I never tried the same one twice.
If I was given the chance to sit down and have a beer with anybody in the world, it would be with you guys hands down. The amount of passion, best friend history, and love for for games you two have is so extremely rare to see nowadays. Absolutely love these videos. Thank you for always including us viewers to hangout with you. It literally makes my day everytime 👍🏼
For me, the first JRPG I played was Final Fantasy on the NES, but it wasn't until the SNES and games like Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, FFIII(VI), and the Lufia series that I got hooked. The PS1 era continued that love and definitely cemented it for me. It truly was a great time to be alive. Anyway, congratulations again on the fantastic channel. I am very much looking forward to seeing more from you, and am glad to be along for the ride.
Rob Man, your video has really lifted my spirits. Thank you for that. My introduction into RPGs was Breath of Fire and Final Fantasy 8, but I wasn't really much of a fan of games until the earlier 2010s that they clicked with me because I randomly decided to hook up my old PS2 and SNES. I grew so attached to so many games, and the music to them has inspired me for years to this day that I'm currently in University studying sound. It's funny how much games can shape your life. I'm really looking forward to seeing your next episodes!
I think the first jrpg to truly hook me was FFX-2 oddly enough. I'd never played any of the others and had only grown up playing more action games like DKC on snes and Mario 64 on N64 so this was a completely foreign genre to me. I loved the idea of a huge story being told and like Johnny said being able to go on an adventure while sat at home alone was a nice concept. Seeing you guys in these videos always brings a huge smile to my face. You both just seem like such genuinely great people and its so cool to see your friendship. Thank you so much and I'm so gla dyoure truly getting into doing your own channel Rob!
I just think that both your channels are so interesting and endearing. As a Yorkshire man (and knowing Johnny has Yorkshire heritage) I just really love you guys as Canadians because you are both my kind of people. Content is great too. Looking forward to more Rob!
When you guys bust out into the Dragon Warrior song like two drunken sailors, couldn't stop laughing. RobMan the sincerity of this subject and your guys' love for RPGs and the stories, it's infectious! Love it!
When Pokémon Red had come out I fell massively in love with it. I didn’t know there was anything else like it. A friend of mine lent me a little game called Final fantasy 7. The rest is history. Going back and playing all the old final fantasy’s through the Ps1 collections. Wild arms, Chrono trigger & cross, Dragon warrior. It really was a magical time. Still am obsessed with JRPG’s to this day. Love the Chanel, keep up the awesome work Rob!!
Two great friends sitting and just talking video games. Always humbling to listen to you guys chat. Like many people, Pokemon was my gateway into JRPGs, which is my favourite gaming genre!
Robman, your videos are already putting a HUGE smile on my face! Thank you for doing this channel! I was a fan of tea, big breakfasts with friends, and RPGs already but any time you and Johnny get to talking about your (legendary!) 90s friendship, it brings me joy, thanks!
Great memories... For me was different growing up in South America there was no Spanish RPGs... So language was a huge barrier so I grew up in the Snes era and loved beat em ups and platformers... Eventually I tried a game name Pokémo Red.. Without realizing I was enjoying it and understanding the mechanics and got used to the slow paced style and open my love for Role Playing ... Years later I'm still on a quest to beat those 16 bit RPJs and is just amazing to experience those titles years later for the first time... Keep it up Rob
Thanks you guys! ..This feels like the second coming of the Happy Console Gamer channel. My first rpg was DW1. I was 9 and being a French Canadian, this is where I start to look in the dictionary for words. I remember at the beginning I didn't understand a lot of what was happening and then discover that when the text became red, I paid the guy in the town entrance and all rebecame white. XD
I think I got into JRPGs playing Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III (i.e. Final Fantasy VI) at my friend's house; the one that lived in the same neighborhood. My first JRPG was Final Fantasy VII when I got it along with my PlayStation back in the 1990s. That was when I'd get so excited when the next ones came out by Square-Enix. I loved how back then I had more time but not as much money so I had to make every game count. JRPGs were perfect for that since they lasted.
For me it's basically the same, I got into JRPGs through my best buddy. He owned Phantasy Star and I watched him playing. The only difference is, that it was around 2 years later (1990/1991) cause we lived in Germany and the games tend to come out later than in North America. Great video, Rob! Looking so forward to more.
As someone born in the late 90s and didn't get to experience games really before the 2000s, you guys have gotten me into so many games I wouldn't otherwise have tried thanks to your passion for them. Thank you!
Genuinely delighted that this is finally happening, been watching HCG since i was 14 (24 now) and have always wanted you to start your own show too. Enjoyed the hell out of this Rob, Looking forward to the next episode!
Ys on Master System was my first. Just the feeling that there was this little world for me to explore. I used to think, wow, imagine if you could see this world through that little guy's eyes. Now we have 3D and even VR but, dammit, why do I feel there's something missing that was present in those old 2D games? Is it just nostalgia? Or was imagining those worlds far greater than they could ever be as polygons? My grandad who was born in 1910 used to say he preferred radio to TV because the pictures in his head were more engaging. I dunno. Great episode guys and looking forward to more Rob Man Worlds!
I’ve always wondered the same exact thing! I think the imagination is just so powerful that we feel that way, newer games just aren’t the same sometimes!
Final Fantasy on the NES was my start. I remember how cool it was that you could have a Black Belt or a Thief in your party. It was (and still is) such a full, fun game with some classic music and a great storyline. Instantly hooked ever since. Great to see Rob getting the channel up and running, best wishes to him for future success!!
I honestly love watching your friendship and experiences you guys had back in the day. I'm a bit younger than you and Johnny but you remind me of my friends and I in the late 90's/early 2000's during our senior years at high school. We would hang out everyday, talk shit, play videogames and had zero responsibility! Quite the opposite these days - but video's like these take me back to those times, so thank you :) I've been following Johnny for several years now and have just discovered your channel. Consider me subscribed! 😁
My first foray into JRPG was Pokemon Red, then Yellow. I remember just being thrown into a world with almost no instruction and just walking around figuring out what to do and customizing my different parties, training them, etc and I would play this with my older brother. It was magical. A few years later, Final Fantasy VII fell into our laps and we would do the same with this game, except we were so immersed in the story it was insane. We got stuck at one point and our Disc 1 broke before we could beat it, so it was the end of an era for us. I still loved Cloud and Aeris and all the characters and I remembered the fondly until the emulation era finally allowed me to play the game and finish it for myself. I played some RPGs in between those two times, on my GBA, but I didn't truly fall in love with the genre until I got an R4 for my DS and played literally every RPG I discovered. I didn't finish most of them, but that was my first time playing other FF games, DQ, SMT (my 3 fav series), as well as Chrono Trigger, more Pokemon games and Spinoff, etc etc. I played almost everything, even the bad games.
I believe the game that got me into JRPGS was Final Fantasy 8. I remember my relatives when they came to visit they brought their copy and it was the first game I saw then with multiple discs. I was amazed by the CGI cutscens, the story and most importantly the summons. Since then, JRPGS have a special place in my heart.
Great video Rob! I recently made the move to TH-cam and it's been a blast. The rush of adrenaline and satisfaction I get when I upload my creations is so addictive and fun! I hope your channel will grow and you'll have fun with it too along the ride!!!
So great See RobMan and Johnny on the show together You both ROCK! And remind me of my younger years and gaming with my buddies like the Bums we where. Rpgs are my favorite and what really started my collection. my first was actually Final Fantasy 1 on the NES. Got it for christmas one year from my Uncle along with Legend of Zelda and Little Mermaid. Funny story when me and my sisters got our gifts that year my uncle for got which was which and you wont believe the one that had my name on it. YES! It was Little Mermaid LOL.
My first JRPG experience was the Final Fantasy 7 demo when I first got a PS1 in like late 1996? I played it so many times and when I finally got to play the full game I think I never was the same casual gamer again.
You know...Johnny should start a TH-cam channel too.
Funny 😁😁😁 I love it

Or was imagining those worlds far greater than they could ever be as polygons? My grandad who was born in 1910 used to say he preferred radio to TV because the pictures in his head were more engaging. I dunno. Great episode guys and looking forward to more Rob Man Worlds!
I’ve always wondered the same exact thing! I think the imagination is just so powerful that we feel that way, newer games just aren’t the same sometimes!
Interesting ideas
Man rob, I’m so happy and proud of you!
I started watching you guys 8 or 9 years ago, and its been a blast listening to you go nuts over games for so long! You guys are the BEST!
Rob. Thanks for doing this. It’s like having those Christmas specials but now on a regular basis.
I just discovered that RobMan has a TH-cam channel! That is so awesome!
Man!! I'm so happy you'll be making content as well now!! Congrats Rob!!!
I loved every second of this
So excited for Rob's show!
Great video! So glad you've finally set up your own channel, can't wait for more stories from both of you :D
Yesss amazing to see you guys. Love from Brazil.
Great Episode RobMan! Keep up the good work
Final Fantasy on the NES was my start. I remember how cool it was that you could have a Black Belt or a Thief in your party. It was (and still is) such a full, fun game with some classic music and a great storyline. Instantly hooked ever since.
Great to see Rob getting the channel up and running, best wishes to him for future success!!
Made my night to see this video posted. So much fun to watch. So far so good with the show, Rob!
Quite the opposite these days - but video's like these take me back to those times, so thank you :)
I've been following Johnny for several years now and have just discovered your channel.
Excited to see where your own TH-cam adventure will take you Rob, I'll definitely be sticking around to watch it unfold. Good luck!
This channel is so nice. Love the content already. Keep up the great work.
I'm not even into RPGs but could hear you guys talk about them for hours ! So glad you are doing this Rob!
My first JRPG experience was the Final Fantasy 7 demo when I first got a PS1 in like late 1996? I played it so many times and when I finally got to play the full game I think I never was the same casual gamer again.
This is Great! Glad you're dedicating time to the channel now Rob. I love it when you and Johnny talk shop about rpgs.
I love this setup
I'm so happy we get to enjoy more of your memories together. Love it, man!
