      I couldn't agree more. The grain and overall look of the unfinished guitar demanded that the finish be minimal.

      Oh I dunno. I think the colour choice looks gorgeous. However I think the final finish of it on closer inspection doesn’t look so great.

    When it came out of the box I thought if I had this beautiful piece of maple or can even order one close to this beautiful I would do liquid glass or epoxy to show that beautiful wood grain. Or you can use a urethane clear that when you wet sand and buff it doesn't have any orange peel and it's one solid beautiful glass plain. I will have to get with you and show you some of the wood working me and my brother can do, I literally did not have a clue I could buy a kit that is that quality of maple top, I have to go in the woods and find my own logs and Burls on trees and stumps to get that I sure do think if that was finished in solid glass to presserve that grain and make it stand out you would be allot more happy.

      Darrell is a Tele guy to the core. Binding, what's that? ;-) The binding scraping would've added quite a few more hours to this gig for Brad tbh but I bet Darrell wanted more of a studio or jr look. I'd be concerned about the finish flaking off on the binding as the guitar ages but since it's completely coated in plastic, and not nitro, probably won't be an issue.

    Quite a while ago you gave me some advice regarding the creating of a guitar. I made mention that I knew just enough about guitar repair to be dangerous or something to that effect. I used to help my father when I was a young kid. I finally decided to take the plunge and bought a guitar kit. You had mentioned it would be a good way to get started in learning the craft. I will let you know how it turns out once I get it and complete the build but wanted to thank you for making the suggestion in order to get me jump started.

    I think a buffing wheel would make a difference on the finish.... But honestly, it's much nicer than any kit guitar my friends have put together. It looks good and sounds great. I have had to buff, fret level, setup, rewire, and only god knows what else to kit guitars. Most people don't put that much care into their work.
    I have spent the last 3 years learning to be a luthier. It takes more than most people realize.... But I have fun with it, and I'm always learning something new.

  • @74dartman13
    @74dartman13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I really like your color choices for the finish! The guitar looks and sounds amazing! If you're trying to save money by buying a kit guitar, I would say go buy one already built. You can get em cheaper. If you want to learn about how a guitar is built and how to work on them...I think they're an awesome idea! I've done 2 from Solo...Tele and Strat. They've become my favorite guitars! When you do it yourself, there's more of a connection you have to the instrument that you don't always get when you buy one already finished. You can personalize them and make them exactly how you want them. You can do mods and upgrades as you get the funds to do them. It's just a great overall experience! It's actually changed my life! I'm disabled and with little I can do...a very boring existance. Building the kits gave me a great hobby to occupy my time and gave me something to look forward to! I can't wait to do my next one!👍😎🎸🎶

    Thanks for a great build and fun videos. This is exactly the guitar I've been wanting to build also. Solo Music Gear is in my neighborhood in the Toronto area and are a bunch of great guys. They are actually more than just a kit store and also have a showroom full of guitar related accessories for sale. I can drive over to them and hand pick my kit from their store....Not sure what I'd do about finishing my own build as that's not my world but building and upgrading these guitars certainly is, as I regularly buy up old Epiphone Les Paul's and give them a make-over. Thanks again. This was a ton of fun watching and a bit inspirational too...

      Graham Linux yeah I found that out the hard way after building a LP and having no end of problems with the finish reacting and bubbling up, dyes not working as expected. In the end a near new strat copy I bought for $50 delivered sounds much better and has great sound unplugged even. I would not bother with building another and would only buy complete again.

    Hi Darrell - great job on the kit guitar but I am in agreement with a lot of the comments on here that the maple spalt finish should have been left along and not painted over - I have seen and worked on so many burst LPs that I welcome a unique finish on them. Now I wonder what upgrades you are planning on for another kit guitar you would build if it happens for you? I dig all the work that you do with electrics but I would like to see you step out of your comfort zone and maybe post some reviews with some acoustic guitars. Now that's an area that is unique with its own set of rules but open to many creative mods as well. Have an awesome day & weekend - Keep On Rockin!!!

    Was wondering why didn't Brad scrape your binding on the body, your preference ?Great looking kit,and what a nice job on the paint.🎸👍

    Awesome sound on this Solo Music kit. I built a Jackson V kit from Albatross guitars and was pretty good for my first try watching a bunch of Brad's videos this summer. I may want to build one from Solo since it sounds like the pickups are better quality. I had to upgrade the bridge pickup to EMG-81s and tends to be the the guitar I play more than my $1300 Schecter Banshee Elite FRS I bought last year.

    Rough finish and wished you kept the binding.

    It doesn’t sound like a Les Paul, it sounds like a Darrell Braun Dual Humbucker Single Cutaway Guitar 🎸 Excellent 🌟🌟🌟🌟

    I have to eat some words here! I've looked at some of the spalted maple LP kits, and was never a big fan. Seeing this, with the beautiful burst that Brad did, I'm totally surprised! That looks great! Sounds really nice too. Can't wait for the more in-depth sound check. As always, excellent job.

    Awesome build and awesome looking guitar when all is said and done. May I suggest using flux when soldering. It looked like you have great technique with an iron but flux will help with those annoying sharp solder tails when you pull away the tip. No-clean rosin flux in a handy applicator is all you need.

    That finish could have been much better and if you want an example of a perfect finish, just check out the one on my Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top Pro! This also proves that cheap electronics can sound very good.
