    I like that this version of Crane very clearly doesn’t fear Batman. With your other animatics, it shows him as this shadowy creature of the night, as something to be feared. But Crane sees him as just someone in a bat costume, which fits extremely well since fear is his entire thing

    Whenever I hear Crane state “I wanna end me” in the animatic, I feel like it’s less “I wanna commit suicide” and more “I wanna end being Johnathan Crane and be reborn as Scarecrow”.
    His anger with Batman being seeming to care for him: “why do you care for me, why aren’t you scared of me?” Reminds me of how the Joker barely comprehends why Batman continues to save him (and other villains) while also arresting him.

      I love that they can't understand that he knows he could absolutely kill each and every one of them but he doesn't because he knows if he crosses that line he won't stop he will keep justifying killing more and more and then he wouldn't be bat man and there's a quote from one of the animated movies " I have a contingency for myself it's called the justice league" he would absolutely want them to stop him if he ever did

      Would love to see the new Batman movie series centre around his Arkham based rogues gallery a bit, to help explain how villains keep escaping.
      Maybe start out one movie with a doctor (Crane) walking through the high security wing of the Asylum, passing several other doctors and guards, then taking a turn into an obviously less maintained hallway where he's seemingly alone except for the patients wearing straight jackets in their padded cells. He opens a door to a brightly lit room, comforting the patient who immediately begins cry and beg as the door opens. As he closes the door, his nametag and lower face briefly visible as the camera focuses on the name of the door: "Drury Walker" as the light coming through the door slat goes pitch black, before panning across to the hallway as Batman's silhouette stalks the corridors, likely to meet with an inmate, ignoring Walker's screams as they blend in with the rest of the patients.
      Walker is "treated" surgically during the opening sequence and is released with a "clean bill of health" as it ends. Of course, the silhouette on the wall beside him that looks vaguely like Batman might hint that that's a lie.
      Over the first 3rd of the movie, we see Batman vs Killer Moth, both of them adapting to the other, with Moth being paranoid about Batman to some degree and always fleeing as soon as his clients get away.
      The rest starts after Batman is searching for him in an abandoned factory. There's steam coming from somewhere, and Bruce makes the mistake of breathing it in, slowly becoming lost in a labyrinth of fear, as Scarecrow watches on from above, shown first in silhouette, then over the shoulder to keep him from being fully seen. Treat him like a good monster in a horror movie, showing only indistinct parts until the final act. But he's not the Riddler, we don't need to figure out his identity along with Batman, so give us scenes of him at the Asylum, doing paperwork regarding his research, with flashbacks to his life and childhood. Brief moments of indistinct yelling and screaming as he cowers in a closet; drawn out instants of him jumping out of the cornfields in a hessian sack and overalls to scare his classmates; scenes of people around him happily laughing as he smiles confusedly, clearly unable to empathize with them but pretending he can; showing genuine delight as he watches a woman cower in fear as they watch a horror movie together. And of course, brief flickers of fear toxin imagery ending with him smiling, his smirk becoming increasingly paired with a hessian grin...
      He should also pose a challenge for Batman as a detective more than simply a fighter or a R&D department owning billionaire. He's methodical, but not in the same way as Two-Face or the Riddler. He isn't doing this to send a message or to make money. He's simply doing this for his research and personal, perverse enjoyment. Consequently, Bruce makes several errors by biasing his investigation, trying to look for some deeper motive than someone just wanting to experiment on people with no regard to the damage they're causing. And as much as he might be able to take Crane in a fight, he can't win against a suited up Scarecrow, as a single scratch is all it takes to leave him a cowering wreck. So he's forced to put the pieces together, eventually tracking down Moth as Bruce Wayne and getting him to reveal his fear of not just the Bat, but also the Dr, in order to catch Crane with his pants down.
      And at the end, having Hugo Strange personally thanking Batman, before going straight to Crane's cell and interrogating him about Batman...

    Not bad. Not bat at all.
    Jonathan Crane is actually one of the villains with a somewhat poorly defined past. What we do know for sure is that he had a particularly rough childhood and severe social maladjustment. As a kid he was constantly trying to scare other children because he didn't know how to actually talk to others. And he never outgrew that impulse.
    Ironically, this past made him into one of the villains well known for NEVER deliberately harming children. Even in his worst crimes he took efforts to make sure no kids were harmed (there is even a story about how he, the Riddler, and Catwoman teamed up to protect an orphanage).
    He got a doctorate ( neurochemistry and pharmaceuticals) and a position at Arkham relatively young. The poor management and near-total lack of oversight left him free to develop his "Fear Aversion Therapy" methods for years.
    ...Until it just wasn't enough to satisfy him anymore, and he decided to take his practice into the public...
    Your animations are getting more fluid, and with finer details. And your work shows a great deal of creativity in design.

    Keep you in the dark, what had you expected?
    Me to make you my art
    And make you a star and get you connected?
    I'll meet you in the park
    I'll be calm and collected
    But we knew right from the start
    That you'd fall apart 'cause I'm too expensive
    Your talk'll be somethin' that shouldn't be said out loud
    Honestly, I thought that I would be dead by now (Wow)
    Callin' security, keepin' my head held down
    Bury the hatchet or bury your friend right now
    For the debt I owe, gotta sell my soul
    'Cause I can't say no, no, I can't say no
    Then my limbs all froze and my eyes won't close
    And I can't say no, I can't say no
    Careful...
    Step on the glass, staple your tongue (Ahh-ha)

    Ohh I am absolutely obsessed with everything about this!!! Beginning with a child Jonathan and progressing through his fall into obsession? It’s absolutely wonderful how you show that to him it was him vs the world. His hair starting off very choppy, then it being slicked back, then at the end it’s completely messed up… such wonderful use of character design to represent him attempting to be seen as “calm and collected” and then failing.
    Those dolls were also spectacular! I can’t say much about the first one, but it literally spiraling down was amazing. The second one of who I assume is Hugo is kind of hilarious, the fact he made a doll of his boss(?) just to rant to is so hilarious. And the one of himself… it’s absolutely insane how you made it look more messed up in each scene, eventually to a terrifing drawing of jon then him in his full scarecrow attire!
    Also this may be a stretch but was the patient surrounded by mirrors Jervis? Idk but the hair looks similar to the times you’ve drawn him 👀
    I never thought that this song would be used for Jon, but it works! I especially love that you use the lyrics as him literally speaking in some scenes. The ending where we see him ranting to batman while sitting in his Arkham cell, just a completely broken man, is especially creative. I love how he seems almost too calm before having a small outburst when he asks the bat “why aren’t you scared of me?”, and then just leans against the glass.
    Plus all the added voice acting really added to it (even the ending part with Jonathan hehe)
    Big props to everyone that worked on this masterpiece, the wait was absolutely worth it! Our Jonathan alter is particularly obsessed with it and wrote most of this admittedly very long rant. So… congrats on impressing the literal master of fear!! But in all seriousness, this shit was spectacular and I can’t wait for the next one (crossing my fingers for some Jervis lore)

    Scarecrow is my favorite Batman villain thanks to the fact that fear is such a powerful tool in storytelling.
    Seeing what keeps seemingly invincible characters like Batman up at night shows another layer of character.
    Having John as a tortured soul who was tormented by influences in his youth. Yet still having him as a egotistical madman who believes he is smarter than everyone and is willing to torture everyone just so he feels better. Makes him a villain that you can easily hate yet understand.
    The visuals showing what makes John afraid, the puppets of himself and Strange showing his manipulation, and the horrific jump scares and distortion of reality showing his damaged mental state and also what could easily be the effects of fear toxin.
    Just brilliant. A beautiful reimagining for my favorite villain in this franchise with dozens of brilliant villains.

  • @diamondpython8034
    @diamondpython8034 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Fascinated by all the little bits of backstory we get through the flashes and hallucinations. Especially interested in that section at 1:20 - looks like Jonathan is on trial in some sort of religious court? I can’t really decide whether it’s supposed to be a hallucination or a memory. If it’s memory, it seems like he was put on trial for sin, likely the inherent sinfulness alluded to throughout the rest of the video, with words like brat, sinful, evil flashing on screen. Also seems to imply that this trial and the likely guilty verdict was the source of his suicidal thoughts and his view of himself as a sinful monster. On the other hand, it could also be a hallucination or symbolic - if that’s the case, it gives us some insight into what the religious trauma did to his psyche. The appearance of the eye motif, which I think is supposed to be a stand in for God, shows that Jon feels like he’s always being judged by Heaven and being rightfully punished for his monstrosity. This also explains some of the negative feelings he show when he asks “why aren’t you scared of me” - he feels like people should be scared of him, because he’s a sinful monster. Either way, a fantastic way to let us inside the head of this character, and I would seriously love DC to pick this version of Scarecrow up for a story - it’s an utterly fascinating take on the character and one rife with story opportunity. Well done!

    • @adamf.charles5857
      @adamf.charles5857 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was somewhat like a trial, at least he remembers it like that, but factually it was an exorcism. People in his village believed he was "posessed" or maybe he was some kind of changeling himself. It was so traumatic that Jonathan internalised all of this.

    I'm curious as to why you chose this song and what it means to you about the character. Care to expound?

    • @Cheetahgirl_Studios
      @Cheetahgirl_Studios ปีที่แล้ว +59

      I personally think it was a combination of the song itself and it’s lyrics. The eerie vibe of the song fits Crane’s character, at least post transformation into Scarecrow. And the lyrics hold some meaning too:
      “When we all fall asleep, where do we go?”- Reference to his ability to incite severe hallucinogenic nightmares via his Fear Gas. Maybe also a nod to his previous career as a psychologist?
      “Why aren’t you scared of me?”- this one’s repeated a lot. At first it sounds like a threat, a tease. Johnathan KNOWS he can instil fear into others. Why would he ask them that if that’s the case? But the end of the animatic, I think, explains this. All of this was in Johnathan’s mind. A mad dive into what made him into the monster we know now. He was never asking the question to his victims. He was demanding an answer to why he wasn’t feared by the one man who refused to let his fear tactics shake him- Batman.
      The way I see it, from the repeated use of “I wanna end me”, Scarecrow was somewhat aware of the monster he was becoming. The cycle of abuse he was perpetuating onto others. In a way, the fear he created became who he was. A monster who only saw value in his claws and fangs. Look at the part with his doll. Over time, every time Crane’s demons rip through the doll, it looks more and more broken and monstrous. In an ironic sense, just like his victims, Scarecrow was stuck in a mental hell of his own making. But the problem was that unlike those affected by his fear toxin, there was no antidote for him. He was too sick. Too warped by his past and his sadistic ways to be cured. It’s a never ending cycle of self hatred and taking that hatred out on others. That’s why he hates that Batman is never scared of him. He can’t understand it. Everyone fears him. Everyone. Maybe even a part of himself, however deep into his twisted brain that part may be. So why? Why is this man not afraid of Crane?
      The song is one of selling your soul and self loathing. Which is a journey we see Johnathan Crane take. Selling his mind to the demons of his own design, and hating himself to the point where he kills the old Johnathan and lets Scarecrow reign in his mind. Riddled with self disgust over the fact that he can’t even scare a guy in a bat suit.
      Edit: Oops, sorry, got Crane mixed up with Crow.

    • @clockworkrex7914
      @clockworkrex7914 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@Cheetahgirl_Studios Very nice breakdown, thank you. It makes more sense now.
      I actually wondered if "I wanna end me" might mean Crane actually *wanted* to become Scarecrow. He wanted the old, weak Crane identity to die and become fermentation for the Scarecrow. That's not actually incompatible with your interpretation, though.

    • @Cheetahgirl_Studios
      @Cheetahgirl_Studios ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@clockworkrex7914 Thank you! I tried lol.
      And yeah, I agree. The way I see it, this version of Crane wanted to hurt others the way he was hurt. But he was too “weak” to go through with it. Plus there’s a lot of hints to your theory, since we see the imagery of flowers growing out of dolls of Crane. So it very well could be that Johnathan “killed” his old self to give into his darker side, creating Scarecrow. Even just look at the final scene for an example. His behaviour is erratic, near maniacal. A far cry from the calm, composed psychologist we saw in the scene where he was walking past the other prisoners.

    i honestly have no idea what's going on but i am having SUCH a good time. the unheld horses trampled me and now I'm lying on the dirt road trying desperately to absorb what's going on through my broken ribs
    (sorry in advance for the long comment lol, i kinda freaked out and started listing very detail i found interesting and fun in the animatic and there's just this word brick chilling in the comment section now)
    okay wait i wanna do a highlights section for myself because the EVERYTHING in this is so insane and so much fun i just need to get it off my chest. like the little shoulder shuffle at 1:04 that's done again at 2:40. The scarecrow at 0:33 is so haunting -- it looks like it's drawn with an eraser? Like those scratchy things with a pure black board and you scratch bits off with a toothpick. Idk if you know what I'm talking about but that effect really makes it look like the scarecrow is "out of this world" -- it's not supposed to be here yk. the straw lines at 0:59 kinda remind me of edvard munch's paintings (specifically the scream) and the differing art styles in this animatic just really makes everything more creepy. you're constantly being caught off guard by the hyperrealistic objects in the bg of 1:25 (and the eyes that come right after that!). and the STUFF that's coming out of the doll -- I'm a huge fan of mixing mediums and this animatic does it so much and so well. on the topic of the doll: loving how after every rip it looks kinda shabby and more broken, as if it can't contain the darkness anymore. also, love the spinning web imagery at 2:22, it made me kinda motion sick but in a good way. I'm not gonna go into detail anymore because WOW this comment is long but every painting-esque frame (like the one at 2:35) is so well done and they flash by so fast for something that must have taken ages.
    i love a type of niche horror -- the type of horror that's because of something you don't quite understand and can't comprehend and you don't know if it's here to do you harm or if it'll let you go -- and this animatic really hits it for me? it's like horror that makes you go "wow" instead of "ugh" and this is SO GOOD like. cheers man this was amazing

    'Evil is born of evil and isolation' - Crane grew up in an Amish community where religion was forced on. From images, it was clear he was abused, mistreated, and possibly sexually assaulted by the priest and members, but couldn't do anything but wander to the fields to be alone, with nothing but a scarecrow - possibly his only friend, the only thing that didn't hurt or mistreat him. In Gotham, he was isolated, bullied, and socially awkward from all he suffered, so was always head down in a book. His fears and pains kept building up, until he became fear itself, ironically, becoming the one thing that was kind to him and scared others - a SCARECROW.

    The horror, themes, like, Jonathan having religious trauma fits so well I'm SHOOK I haven't seen that before. But a detail I haven't seen mentioned is how the puppet of John slowly degrades the more it opens up and we see horrific thing emerge from it. Maybe a metaphor about how John is trying to hide away his urge to make others fear him. Trying to give that part of himself just a bit to keep it under control, but in reality he feeds it and only makes his need for experiments grow that much more, eating away at him
