    Appreciate this super helpful video. bonus...i'm using the same mixer and didn't notice the little triangle. Not only I understand how to get my mixer to the interface properly...but I understand the way to get my levels on this particular mixer set. I'd been having a heck of a time getting the meter to register. And all the infos on cords, tps etc. super helpful. Interface is almost the same...I'm using the h4n pro. Subbed!

    I just ordered this mixer to run multiple mics on a guitar amp down to one mono track on my interface. Why, I want to use 4 mics on my guitar amps and don’t want 4 tracks on my daw. Also the compression on the board should be nice to mix going in.

      I would say get the xu version. It is a lot easier to have the mixer and the interface in one unit. If you were needing a compact interface to travel with, along with a mixer for bigger gigs, then I would go with just the mixer and separate interface.

    Thanks for your time!

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t have a video on that, but I should put that idea in rotation. If your camera is able to switch between mic and line level it should be able to take a signal directly from the mixer. The one thing you don’t want to do is destroy the microphone preamp in your camera. If that happens it will just distort anytime you plug a microphone in.

  • @Minotaurus007
    @Minotaurus007 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since you have the aux knobs can you comment on how to set up a mix minus for e.g. dialogues on a zoom conference.
    Atem mini: audio can be delayed by up to 8 frames in the Atem mini control software.

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you can easily set up a mix minus using an aux send. You would bring the audio from Zoom into the mixer, along with all other audio sources (local mics/music/etc.) and send the output of the aux into zoom via an interface or internal routing if on a USB enabled mixer.
      I release this video shortly before they updated the ATEM to allow delay.

    Hi! This is some great info, thank you for the effort! Do you have any idea about the dynamic range, the maximum input level and the impedance on the audio jack connections on the Atem Mini? I can't figure out how I can connect an Akai MPX16 to the Atem Mini and I am wondering if an extra preamp like the Focusrite Scarlett could be the solution. Now I have the jack on the Atem set to line but get a very weak output signal. Thank you !

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what would be going on. The MPX16 looks like it has line outputs. Have you checked your gain out of the Akai? If it's hitting proper levels but the input to the ATEM is super low, I'd say check the cables next. It might be just as simple as a $6 cable. I wouldn't use a preamp unless the output of the Akai is mic level, otherwise you might destroy the preamp.

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want to run it into the computer you can add effects within the computer, like in a DAW. The downside to that is you can add latency too. The best thing to do would be to sell some gear and buy a mixer/interface that has built in effects. PreSonus has some good ones. I think it is their AR line of mixers.

    How setup zoom h6 with atem Blackmagic for stream live?

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you go watch some of my live streams I have that exact setup. I usually go over it right at the beginning of the stream. Basically you use your monitor mixer to mix the audio and then come out of the Line output at the bottom of the H6 and run it into one of the Audio Inputs on the ATEM. Make sure you go into the ATEM Control Software settings and select Line level on your audio source. If you have it on Mic level you could harm some of the electronics.

    Great video! We have an old Yamaha EMX 640 powered mixer with three mics plugged into it and it powers two speakers. There's only (1) Main Out Phone Jack and (1) Monitor Out Phone Jack. The manual says outputs are unbalanced so based on your video, the max length of cable from the mixer to an audio interface would be 30'? If I wanted to make a longer run to the rear of the room where the USB camera and computer is, do I need to buy a better mixer with a TRS balanced output? Could I still use the power portion of our mixer for the speakers with an alternative mixer? We're trying to set up a Zoom meeting with a USB camera on a low budget. Any help appreciated! Thanks

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you could use something called a CleanBox Pro from ART. It will convert your signal to a balanced signal and allow you to run it to the back of the room. Definitely make sure you don’t use the powered output to go into this box, but yes you should still be able to use them to go to your speakers. I think the clean box is around $100 or so. You may also have to get a 2nd one at the back of the room to convert it back to unbalanced depending on what your audio is going to plug into.

    Hi, I like your set up. One quick question for you. We have an atem switcher hd that we use at the church. We had no issue with it for last few months. But, now when we run it for live streaming, you could hear the audio or sound cuts every second or two. I have replaced the xlr cables that run from the back of the atem hd switcher to the mixer board, but still didn't solve the problem. May be you could help us fix the problem or help us with the best audio set up. Thanks you.

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lau! It's kind of hard to diagnose that without being next to the gear sometimes. Can you think back on what might have changed in the setup that could have caused this? Sometimes its just a small thing. Cables would have been the first thing I checked as well, then probably look at what the output signal from the mixer is doing. Maybe plug it into an external speaker, or headphones to make sure it isn't the mixer. If the mixer is fine, then move onto to the ATEM switcher to see if that is a problem.
      If you've recently done a firmware update for the ATEM, try rolling it back to the previous version. If that's not it then maybe see if Blackmagic can help you figure out what's going on.
      Thanks again Lau!

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it distorting the input of the ATEM Mini? Music tends to be 5-10 dB hotter than dialogue so you might want to check the input of the ATEM in the software. If your meters are hitting the red, use the trim knob at the top to adjust it down. You many have to boost the preachers mic to compensate.

    Thanks a lot for your tutorial on connecting a mixer to an interface. I only found a few that address this issue, and yours are very detailed. I am a very beginner on this thing, so forgive me if my questions are totally off base. I have a Zoom live track L-8 mixer/interface that I want to connect to Roland VR-1HD video switcher for streaming or recording because I want to plug in more than 2 mics including a XLR lapel mic for my talking mic. The question is how do I connect and what cable I need to use to connect the 2 devices. On Zoom L-8, there are these XLR monitor out L/R which in the manual is to connect to a powered speaker. Then on Roland VR-1HD, there are the RCA line in inputs L/R. Do I use those 2 outputs & inputs to connect them? Or am I totally off on this? And I am guessing that I'd have to use the zoom L-8 as a mixer connected to a power adapter (not as USB audio interface to computer), is that correct? Thank you.

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Myrna! Thanks for the kind words. I was looking over the Zoom L-8 and Roland VR-1HD, and it looks like you could take the 1/4 inch headphone out next to the main XLR outputs and run it into the RCA inputs on the Roland. Something like this would work just fine: amzn.to/32jYHTE They have a 3, 6 or 10ft version.
      If for some reason that doesn't work (if you get noise or a hum, which there is a slight chance of) then you would need to use the XLR outputs. Unfortunately you'd need to run it through something like the ART Clean Box Pro to bring it from a balanced XLR signal to an unbalanced RCA signal. Here it is on Amazon: amzn.to/32iCwgA
      I know at that point you are getting into extra cables and things like that, but it will provide a really clean signal going to the Roland.
      I think you are correct that you would have to use it as a mixer, but some of these small mixers work as both simultaneously. I don't know if the Zoom will do that as I am not super familiar with it. I know my H6 won't do that, so perhaps this is the same way.
      Anyway, hope that helps!

    • @PianistIndo
      @PianistIndo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RyanKnowsNothing Thanks so much for your reply & detailed answer. And YES, that definitely helps a lot. To answer your question, the Zoom live track L-8 can be used both as a mixer and USB interface. I did try to connect it using the XLR outputs from Zoom L-8 to RCA inputs on Roland VR-1HD and it worked. So I'd like to clarify that I would still need to get that ART Clean Box Pro? Or it is an option to run it thru that if I want to get a cleaner signal? Last question is: what software program you would recommend to use for recording? Since I have the Roland video mixer/switcher, it would be great if I can straightly record it on OBS that can capture both audio & video all at once, but is it good enough? Or do you suggest to separately record the audio file on a different DAW software and then mix the video & audio later? If so, please do recommend an easy to use DAW software. Thank you again for your help.

    Hi Ryan, how would I connect a Yamaha MG 124C to an Audient ID4 A/I? Is it possible to get stereo with it?

    • @RyanKnowsNothing
      @RyanKnowsNothing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ava,
      Sorry for the late reply. I took the last month of the year off from TH-cam. From what I can see there isn't really a way to get Stereo into the Audient ID4. It has a single mono mic/line input, and the front input looks to be just an instrument input, which wouldn't be able to accept the line input from the mixer. I wish I had better news. If you need to get stereo off the Yamaha into your computer, you can look at selling both of those items and getting a Yamaha MG12XU here: amzn.to/2Lyb1dk
      It would cut down on cabling and number of devices you have to worry about. Anyway, I hope that helps a little. Thanks for watching the video!

      There should be a label or marker of some sort to indicate the output. Usually on mixers and interfaces as small as the ones I am using they aren’t XLR. They’re usually 1/4”. An XLR output will always be the male end with the three prongs exposed. So look for that and you’ll be set!

      Hey Keith! You can absolutely do that, and no, an interface is not needed. You can just run the audio from the mixer to the ATEM Mini of your choosing. You'll need to get a dual xlr or dual 1/4" (depending on the master output of your mixer) to 1/8" stereo cable. That will allow you to run everything into one of the stereo inputs on the ATEM Mini. Just be sure to go into the switcher settings and change the input from mic to line level.

      The biggest one that I see is you can have more inputs than your interface and usually an external mixer has extra processing like EQ, compression and FX. So great for bands and live podcasts, etc.

    Does it make sense to connect a Yamaha 12 channel mixer to a Universal Audio Apollo X4 to have more inputs? Are any of the properties of the interface lost with this connection? Or, do the mixer gains the interface properties?

      You can do that for sure, you just lose two mic preamps on the Apollo. The mixer shouldn't be limited at all in its functionality, so I wouldn't worry about that. Just make sure your going into the line level inputs (1/4") on the Apollo and not mic (xlr).

    Looks like BlackMagic released a new software with the Atem Mini/Pro that has built in delay. Can you make an updated video? Thanks! good stuff

      Absolutely! I was going to hopefully make one tonight, but I am kind of in the middle of a studio move. We’ll see what happens. I heard about this earlier today and since I have a day job, haven’t been able to jump into it yet. Alex Pettit did an update as well. Thanks for the information, Steve!
