- Denmark’s prime minister proclaimed Frederik X King on Sunday after his mother, Queen Margrethe II, formally signed her abdication, with huge crowds turning out to rejoice at the throne passing from a beloved monarch to her popular son.
Margrethe, 83, is the first Danish monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne in nearly 900 years.
Thousands of people gathered outside the palace where the royal succession was taking place, the mood jubilant as the Nordic nation experienced its first royal succession for more than half a century, and one not caused by the death of a monarch.

The queen's last words were so emotional. Despite not being a Danish, I felt it
The Queen said "God Save the King" before leaving
this clip was truly something special to witness live earlier. really just beautiful❤
God bless Queen Margrethe!!.. hate see her tear after last word :(
Long live the King, King Frederick X
normally she end her speeches with "god preserve Denmark" but here she leaves by saying "god preserve the king" such a strong statement and i am looking forward to how his reign will be.
@0:41 Does anyone know what the Queen said?
Gud bevare Kongen.
(God Save the King.)
If you look carefully at her face she was trying not to cry as she said those 3 words.@@appleandstars
She wasn’t expecting to ever have to say that probably 😢
