- Taking On The Snake: 489 Curves, 3 Mountains, 1 Valley
The Snake snakes through Mountain City and Shady Valley, Tennessee and on into Damascus, Virginia. It is a magical drive any time of year but incredibly gorgeous with the fall foliage out.

I love you guys wouldnt miss watching. If you ever stop I’ll just have to repeat the ones I’ve watched.
I love my ole flat Florida, BUT the mountains of Appalachia are some of the most gorgeous parts of the USA! God did it early in the week for sure. What an absolute MASTERPIECE.🇺🇲💕🙏🇺🇲💕😘
go for it
Traveling the World through their lens..
driving the snake yahoo wupee
That is so Beautiful!!❤
I Love curvy roads.😊
let's drink a lot of fall for its the happiness time of all
This sure does beat the view of city street. Beautiful scenery
My husband lived in Mountain City and & Johnson City. We went across this on one of the trips to visit. It seemed like it would never end, but is now a fond memory. Thanks for posting! -Heather Westphal
Sir YOU ARE A INCREDIBLY LUCKY GUY TO HAVE HER IN YOUR LIFE MEL U ARE SO SWEET AWESOME LADY !!!
keep your eyes on the road guys we don't want to lose you
I've been there done that wupee get it on
Been down the snake several times, a lot of fun.
Bob Ross is on public television
This was a beautiful trip through the mountains of Tennessee! The foliage was just gorgeous. I have traveled Rt. 421 many, many times, but never Rt. 489 to my knowledge. I believe Rt. 489 is close to Mt. City which is close to Elizabethton and Johnson City. I think your return to WV is a stupendous idea. I just returned from WV last night (10/22). The trees in the eastern panhandle have already turned. They have not completely turned in the southern part of WV. Every part of WV is beautiful, but so is Tennessee and Virginia. Thank you for the beautiful ride. Please stay safe on the road.
Thank you, we’ll keep it as safe as possible. We just got back from WV too
My home track. One of the many great things about living in Bristol.
Beautiful!!! I really enjoyed the video . I love Fall
Glad you enjoyed!
Yall need to ride it on a motorcycle!! Love the Tail of the Dragon too!
I have heard a lot about the Dragon's Tail in NC, but have never heard of the Snake, Looks like a fun drive.
Great video you drove right by the road I live on
That’s awesome, you live in a beautiful town. Thank you
Nice motorcycle road
How beautiful, all those colors, only God our Creator could do that!
Amen to that, Charlotte
Yes, our papa who loves us so Much we can't comprehend it!
beautiful looks like kentucky
Yes, I can see that
Thanks for all your adventures! Been followin ya for a while. Anyways, good wishes from Sacramento. 😎
Thank ya so much, Ryan, hope Sacramento is treating you right
When we drove it my wife was ready to kill me! Loved the drive. Colors are beautiful.
Sounds like the death threats might be a common thing lol.
Shannondo is my home never more to rome
Gorgeous scenery. I'm not a fan of curves or mountains but I think I could do this. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Thanks for watching, Amy!
@@realappalachia It's always my pleasure.
Good ole Rusty Crowe, he sat on both boards when the two hospitals Wellmont and Mountain States were being reconstructed into the healthcare system known as Ballad. I guess you could say he plays offense and defense at same time.
Hahaha I REMEMBER THIS STRETCH OF ROAD! One time going from Shady Valley to Bristol, I had just bought my Silverado and wanted to give the steering and handling a workout. My ex wife had to stop about 5 times to have a smoke and settle her stomach. It took us forever to get home. 😂😂😂
Beautiful colors enjoy the company, i know Shane with melody riding shot gun your job is more fun and time flys... thank you both.
You are right on the money about that, James, thank you
I've rode the dragon on my motorcycle..good times...never rode the snake ..!! y'all ever thought about doing some videos in Northwest Ga..?? I'm born and raised , and still live there.
Yes we’ve talked about heading down there once we get more money and the time to do it right
@@realappalachia awesome , hope to see some Ga. Stuff in the future !! Love your channel !! Just ordered me a shirt .
@@starlaphillips9169 thank ya so much!
Great video thanks for sharing. Put a blindfold on Smiles she will be ok, lol. Be careful guys and stay well & safe.
We will, thank you!
Fall is looking great. since seeing this I may go visit my friends in Dandridge TN. Florida doesn't get fall foliage Thanks for sharing the drive
Most of the switch back curves are on the Tennessee side.
So funny listening to you two.
I bought land in Grayson Co. but sold it. I am here in the Shenandoah Valley, Va. but still think about that 7A down there. Horse and mule country, that is why bought land there. 🐎
Hello from farther up the Appalachians in Maryland. Lovely ride! Our trees haven't turned yet, they're still green except for the orange maples.
Oh wow, I didn’t think about us getting such an early start but hopefully y’all will have a great one to look forward to too
Did ya'll see Swamp Cabbage Man?
No but it sounds like someone we need to see
@@realappalachia 🤣
Hmmm... You talked about getting a lot of rain all summer. We had a drought all summer. That ended with the remnants of Hurricane Ian. I know Appalachia has awesome foliage, but so does NJ. I love our Fall foliage. Every year our DEP sends out Foliage update maps on their Facebook page. This Snake- Is it on the rim that goes all the way around that big bowl? I forget what that was called.
I also heard you mention a cranberry festival. Ours was October 17, in a small town called Chatsworth.
I'm lovin this so far. And I just finished. That was an awesome ride. But I love listening to you all talking too.
🙋♀️🌻🙏
Have you ever done the tail of the Dragon
No we haven’t made it there just yet but hope to because we’ve heard it’s great
You need to take some so you don't get sick
From those of us who can no longer get out, thank you two beautiful people for bringing our incredible mountains to us.
Thank you for watching and the kind words, Denise
That is breath taking ! The colors are soooo pretty 😍
Oh yes, it was so gorgeous
Scenes like this causes one to wonder how there could possibly be depression, sadness and suicides in our beautiful world.... I suppose it depends on how and where our lives are lived. I love this program for many reasons, some are due to personal identity with the places and the narrators... their accents and friendly ways, as we used to say back home in the hills of West Virginia... There's a feeling of warmth and love one can never fully express in words, other than to say it takes us home again... to never be alone again. You are wonderful people bringing the world we know, our world and its goodness to others.... Your work is important... and you certainly are needed and appreciated.... Thank you so very very much.
Thank you for the great comment, Raymond, that made our day
You guys chose the perfect time for that ride. Thank you for bringing us along Shane and Melody!
Thanks for riding with us again, Robin
And no guardrail ‘s of course.
Of course lol
so beautiful!!! thanks for taking me along
thanks for riding along with us, Katie
A beautiful fall day ❤
Oh yes, magical with the colors out
You should go to Troyers Amish groceries
the sad part how many bad wrecks have been on that road over the years
yeah mister curve did not get you
You can never have too much fall foliage.
totally agree with that
So beautiful,thanks for posting 🍁🍂
Thank you for watching, Gloria
Beautiful colors 🍁🍂 Thank you for sharing this video 😊
Thank you so much 😊
I just could not imagine driving thru there at night, with not even a street light!!
I hadn’t even thought about how rough that would be at night, shew lawdy
Different beauty everywhere! Melody for president!
My cousin was killed riding the snake 2 years ago
He was on his motorcycle
Oh no, so sorry to hear that
Thanks for taking us along for the drive! God Bless!
Thank you and God bless you too
Trade you this drive for the same on Pennsylvania turnpike….
That turnpike sounds like it might be a rough one
@@realappalachia yes… construction is ongoing from Breezewood to Ohio State line
Not a good time for motorcycles to be riding the dragon. Those leaves are deadly!
So true
Thank You for that Awesome trip down the Snake! Beautiful scenery !
Thanks for riding with us, a gorgeous time of year
Watch you guys everyday. Beautiful scenery!
It’s a beautiful spot in the world, thanks so much for watching!
Probably my favorite video so far. Perfect!!! Just love the fall colors, and the winding roads. My idea of a perfect road trip. I'd have to be behind the wheel when driving roads like that or I get car sick. I'd like to come and drive The Snake some perfect fall day. Keep up the good work!
Hope you get the chance to see it in person someday. Thanks so much!
Yes. Gloriously beautiful. Id love to see it. As many times as I've been to east Tennessee I've never caught the colors just right. Hopefully that'll happen at some point. Fall is my favorite season also Melody. Thanks again for the beautiful ride along.
Hope you get to check them out someday, thank you
I moved here from Connecticut 4 years ago, about 5 miles from the general store where you started. I love riding my motorcycle all through here.
I bet that is a ton of fun
Loved this ! That's an awesome drive ! The colors of the leaves were very beautiful! Melody did really well! I'm glad she enjoyed it ,unlike black mountain Kentucky...thanks you 2..stay safe always...God bless...🙏❤
Yes she held up much better than either one of us expected lol. God bless you too
I try to pull over to keep me from slamming on my breaks 😂😂😂😂😂absolutely beautiful colors. Thank y’all for sharing another awesome video ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I know what you mean lol. Thank you for watching.
Hands down the best time of the year in Appalachia!...whoa, that UPS guy was going way too fast for those roads!
yes, he was really moving
Sorry it's taken so long to watch this. It's been kinda crazy in my life lately. Between work rescue squad and my mom, they keep me kinda busy. This was a beautiful ride with two beautiful people. You're so right Melody how different parts of the country and world are beautiful in different ways. We just went to Colorado a month ago and the aspen were just starting to change. Y' all need to make it out that way if ya never been and go across Red Mountain Pass. I'm with you Melody on the motorcycles I'd much rather hike or ride a car. May God bless you all and make your curvy roads straight. Sorry didn't mean to go on so much.
Was this recorded recently? My wife and I are gonna be on a road trip through Appalachia (may even be moving there soon if things work out!) next week and I would be so happy to see all these colors!
it was this past weekend, it is in full bloom right now
Wow, what a beautiful ride in the fall. Love the Snake. You hit it just perfect. Such peaceful country. Give me a T for????
It was a great ride
I laughed really good when Shane let the DHL guy pass. It woke my daughter up and she is MAD. I haven’t seen a DHL truck around here where I am.
Uh oh, sorry about that lol
@@realappalachia no worries man. Screamathons are the best lol
This was a gorgeous drive y'all! I really enjoyed seeing the change of the trees & how beautiful it looked even on a curvy road. We used to always go for a ride on Blue Ridge Parkway to see the colors of Fall, but haven't been able to do that for several years. Thank y'all so much for showing us so much of God's blessings! Loving y'alls other channel too! Just please stay safe! Hugs from ol' Virginny! 🤗
Bless you, Debbie, we were hoping to hit the Blue Ridge Parkway too but not looking good for this year
I was born in w.va living in Florida miss it so bad
hope you can get back this way someday
Guess I will have to drive over lol
it is a lot of fun to drive
Quite the windy road but a beautiful drive for sure.👍
Oh yes indeedy
What Highway is this? so I can look it up on the google maps
Route 421 in Shady Valley, Tennessee
What a Beautiful 🚗 drive. I have always wanted to visit the area and really enjoy your videos. I'm from Michigan and Florida, one day I want to explore that whole area with a camper van.
Oh that would be a fantastic trip! Thank you, Tracy
Thanks for the great videos . I live in Ontario Canada but have family and Friends in Wheeling West Virginia area . I always hate to leave there
Thanks for watching, we are REALLY hoping to get to Wheeling, heard so many good things about the history there
WI here, very nice, relaxing and enjoyed !
Thank for watching!
Thanks for sharing, your adventures and pleasantries.
Thanks for watching!
if you refuse to pull over for some drivers they will follow you by less than a foot distance
Oh we’ve experienced that a time or two, some people have no patience
Take a ride on 16 from Marion Va. to Welch W.Va..
That's a tough drive right there
i feel the need to take a dramamine just watching
it is a wild ride
Awesome colors!! If u have never driven a road like that in a sports car, u really owe it to yourself to rent one for the day! It's a blast!! I owned a 2001 Mita and have driven the Parkway & Dragon's tail. I just got home from driving the Blueridge Parkway between Ashville north to Blowing Rock, NC! The colors r great! A little windy & cool (~ 35℉ according to my car & phone)! And no, I drove it in my SUV. 🙄
Oh man, that sounds like so much fun
Mendota here.....
that's odd because we were just talking about doing a fall video through there - great place this time of year to see the foliage
@@realappalachia oh yes a few of the roads are beautiful
Black Mountain in the fall is no slouch either.
i dont think there's any way i can ever talk Melody into driving across there again lol
Make sure an EZ Pass transponder is in your car and fully funded
lots of people from Alabama ride bikes up there!
I can see why
Thanks for all the hard work you put into producing such engaging content. I'm from Baltimore but live in PA now. Pennsylvania is basically Pittsburgh to the west, Philadelphia to the east and Virginia in between. I've got family in Marion and Abingdon, VA so I get to SW VA quite often. I've visited several of these beautiful small towns and want to see many more especially Richlands. Ever since I heard Bruce Hornsby's song, The Road Not Taken, I've wanted to check out that town. Have you gone to Hiltons, Virginia to the Carter Family Fold? It's quite a treat on Saturday night to hear live Bluegrass and see Appalachian clog dancing. There's also a cool museum with all kinds of Carter Family memorabilia and a rocking chair once owned by Johnny Cash inside A. P. Carter's cabin. Incidentally, this is where Johnny Cash last performed before he passed away.
Richlands is my hometown so it is definitely on the list to get to soon. I went to Hiltons but we weren’t able to make it to the show at the Carter Family Fold so we hope to get back there.
A nice comment... LOL...
Blessings lol
it can more than your hat blow off woooooo
Another fun windy road y'all should check out sometime is Woolwine Hwy. in Floyd and Patrick Counties in VA
Hadn’t heard of that one but it sounds right up our alley, thanks!
@@realappalachia Sure thing! The road is VA Route 8, the whole thing goes from Christiansburg to North Carolina. The main windy stretch is between the Blue Ridge Parkway outside Floyd and the town of Woolwine
