I KNEW what he had in his mouth!
The mouse he snuffled out of the six-inch snow in the back yard.
It was already dead from the “play…”
So, I try to get it from him…
      Massive growl.
This guy never learned how to snap much less bite.
      “Drop it.”
      No go.
      “DROP IT, NOW.”
      Reluctantly, he obeyed.
I showed him where I put it on the woodpile in the back yard.
“You get it back when we come out to play tomorrow.”
I’ll be damned if there was no fuss after that.

I only have daughters. My oldest one will most definitely fall apart if I say "I am so disappointed in what you did" and immediately she's crying and saying "I'm so sorry, Mommy". My youngest one, though....ha! If I told her I was disappointed in her, she would legit look at me like "Well...that sounds like a 'you' problem." (They're both sweet, well-behaved girls; just saying there are definitely girls out there who are not as sensitive and don't break as easily....my second one challenges me to find creative ways to discipline her that will actually make her listen and obey. If I had stopped having children after my first daughter, I would be cocky and think I knew everything about raising kids. God knew I needed my youngest daughter to keep me humble!!)

"Dad doesn't do those bad things. You can do it if you want, but Dad doesn't do it." With a disappointing look on my face is all it took for me. Son's want to be just like their Dad. Parents would always tell me that my son was so well mannered and polite and that he was always welcome. I would always joke by saying, "Yeah, he came right out of the box that way. I had absolutely nothing to do with it." One mother told me that since my son and her son was hanging out, he doesn't get into trouble anymore. My son told me that he just says nope and walks away and they, his friends, follow.

Heck, you figured it out! But I can imagine this comes with a caveat. A child will only revere a parent so long as the parent acts worthy of reverence. Encouraging a child to mirror their parents' behavior means that the parents must act with integrity. Older children will see through the facade and grow bitter. So... I suppose it's all circular. We ought to be the sort of people we want to see more of in the world.
Apologies for rambling; I'm just thinking aloud. Congratulations on raising a wonderful son, truly. It sounds like he will be a great leader.

Teaching your children to be honest cancels a multitude of problems later. When my children were caught in a lie the faster they admitted to it the lesser the punishment. My son figured out early that even if you did stupid things admitting up to them right away often ended with a short lecture and no more punishment. By the time he was 5 he would never lie to us anymore. Our daughter on the other hand, it took 15 years to get the same result. Our babies are now both well adjusted self reliant successful young adults.

When i was younger, I remember lying to my parents' faces about twice, at least two major times, both were very minor things to lie about. The first was only about brushing my teeth, I was about 10 at the time, I was grounded for a week I think, not bad, but the scold i got was soul crushing. Two years later, I lied about an english assignment that I had to do for homework, that time was the last, my parents didnt ground me, but made me write a one page essay about integrity and honesty, then gave me a talk relating to it. I felt like the scum of the earth even though the lie wasnt a big one, it was still a lie to my parents. After that, I pledged to myself and them that I'd never lie to take advantage of others again. It has remained a key principle i follow to this day, probably one of the best things my parents ever did for me.

:chuckles: As a former boy I think I can speak with some authority when I say that, for an easier life with the lads in your family, put them outside! Tell them to go away and come back when they are hungry.
All that energy will go into having fights, building forts, climbing (and falling out of) trees and so on. That's what's wrong - they're caged up and it will drive them and you crazy.
Of course, I was a country boy, so what I had to watch out for in the wider world was bulls, electric fences, farm machinery and water too deep or fast for me to cope with.
I know that the dangers if you live urban lives are different and being able to range free is less easy.

    One of the funniest yet.
My mother was firm with me, at a very early age i learned the 1, 2, 3 method
If she made it to 3 and i didn't settle down i was smacked... after a few times i came into compliance for the rest of my life. My father never had to do a thing, my mom was the boss. ✅

It starts with "What were you thinking?" and winds up with "Were you thinking?"
