One fun idea I've had regarding the Coils of the Hydra RoW: using it in combination with the Mobius Configuration! Your allied detachment isn't forced to stay in reserves like the rest of your non-Rewards of Treachery units in your primary detachment, which is a huge deal. That means that for a surprisingly fluffy approach, you could take an allied detachment of the same legion that you've stolen units from, flavoring your RoT units as having infiltrated their ranks and led them into a trap where they're to be sacrificed for that juicy 1VP while the rest of the Alpha Legion forces that were waiting to intercept can come sweeping on through to mop up survivors. It's a little gamey, but it's worth it for the genuine hilarity of saying you're bringing Alpha Legion, only to set up an entirely different Legion during deployment while your AL chill in reserves.
I think the Master of Lies warlord trait kind of depends on the size of the game being played. A game at 3000 pts, moving 3 models will have the impact that you noted. In something like Zone Mortallis, you can move at least 60% of your army to mess with the opponents deployment. Setting up refused flanks or better match ups seems very Alpha Legion
1:21:46 Hydra’s Wail prevents your opponent shooting over 24” during night fighting. Good to pair with nemesis bolters so if you are moving, shoot with the wail.
Regarding power daggers they can still be used on characters with chainfists to gain another attack (since chainfists don't have specialists weapon), so for example a RoT Deliverer Cheiftain or Lernaean Harrower can get 5 chainfist attacks on the charge, it's not much but still something. I also quite like them on something like a tac sergeant for the chance of some cheap AP2 at Ini 5 on the charge to hopefully get something like the opponents tac sergeant out of there before he can fight. As for the Lernaeans they can also work as a fun backfield objective holder. Park a squad of five on your home objective with a conversion beamer for the option to pop out to try to snipe something important across the battlefield. They'll require some commitment to shift from that objective as well.
The hydra wail doesn't remove the reaction from an augury scanner, but does mean they can't use it to ignore the range restrictions from night fighting
Like you the the Conversion Beamer - lerneans are a gnarly back-line combo. They have line so they could hold a home objective, they're fairly survivable with ITWND. I would say they aren't always the best but they can guarantee your home stays safe while the rest pushes forward.
I have played with them to capture the midfield a few times. But my terminators have too many power fists anyway. Worked well in that also. I have not used the conversion beamer however.
This review is really interesting, nice to hear some different takes on the singular AL strengths as they are useful in any number of creative applications. It's my legion as well and I love it. The trouble with Banestrike Bolters is that their reduced range of 18" works to essentially undo the AL rule of being further away, not sure that I'd put them on Vets even at 2pts unless you're going to throw the squad right into it.
The way I run my Lernaeans is 10 man squad with 2 volkite culverins. The Hydra Exemplar rule is all To Hit rolls, including shooting. So you have 16 volkite charger shots and 10 volkite culverins hitting on 2s. I run mine in a Harrowing themed list with Recon Company, where they deep strike with a praetor and warmonger. It is very expensive but very fun.
The only use I’ve found for the Effrit’s Hydra’s Wail is with summoning daemons, so you shoot a unit with the Hydra’s Wail and then use your Esoterist to summon. The other very niche use they could have is pinning, where you drop a unit’s Ld by 1 then try and pin them with another unit.
Claws of the Hydra imo is to replace your line troop tax. Grab a couple of units of the Wolf Wolf better tacticals, or the Ultramarine giga-melee-breachers, or such, you're not doing too sadly even if they don't get to react.
I agree fully with this. Nobody expects 30-60 wolves facing down coils of the hydra, and it's totally legal. Feel like GW stitches themselves up with that ruling here.
Moebius Config -Centurion (Paladin or Thane) Terranic Greatsword or Great Frost Blade -10 man Despoiler Squad or Grey Stalker Squad -Rhino They drive on to a point and just wait to die!
Nice one gents! I also want to shout-out Morlocks for nice RoT options. Having a bunch of Grav on your terminators is kinda mean (and battle-hardened doesn't hurt either).
The trick with the Effrit and Hydras Wail is that they lower the leadership, and then you try and Concuss them, so it’s -1 LD for the concussion test… not great, but it’s something.
Effrit need FAQing - firing protocols, Saboteur and/or Exodus able to join, Hydra Wail effects last to until the start of the opposing players next turn. Nothing crazy, just making it clear what they’re for.
Dont they also affect the enemy squads nuncio vox so no re roll to scatter. (They probably have more than one), and the master of signal rules are vox based, are they not?) Sure, one would have to get within 12"of the right unit, and that is quite hard at times
55.56 - does Alpharius’ ability Everywhere and Nowhere convey to the unit he either joins in deployment or his retinue? For his retinue this is simple, yes whichever ability he chooses applies to them, that’s due to the retinue special rule which states ““The Retinue Squad does not use up a Force Organisation slot and is considered part of the same unit as the model selected as its Leader”. Simply they are one unit. It gets more complicated when he joins a unit, as an independent character with infiltrate can’t join a unit without it and vice versa, this only matters for infiltrating, it’s not an issue with any of the other abilities
It's very much sold to me on the total points cost being counted towards 25%; they are the same unit, with the same rules, both beneficial and not beneficial.
I really hope we get a longer life span than that. I came to Heresy because I was tired of 40k expecting me to buy the same books over and over. Heresy 1 lasted a very long time, and I hope Heresy 2 lasts at least as long.
Alpharius doesn't "join" his command squad, they are the same unit from list building, and infiltrate etc explicitly only require one model in the unit to have the rule to gain the benefit.
Exodus is a fun unit for target threats. People don't want to put any effort his way but when he starts popping tanks and killing apothecaries people start getting annoyed. Also moving 7 then running 6 (+1 for light) and then firing a strength 7 assault 3 weapon at full ballistic skill makes him quite flexible. However you are right he's pricey but he's enough of a distraction to cause people to waste shots on him. Just my opinion from playing with him. Good show by the way :)

Really dislike the alpha legion rules. Makes no sense they are able to select any special unit from another legion, stealing equipment would have made more sense. Also the 2 inch range thing is just terrible gamewise. They could have done so many creative ways of making the rules cool interesting and fluffy.
Played a game against Alpha legion recently and the 2" range thing was super fun and thematic to be honest. Was not game breaking, but required some real tactical play. Much better in practice than on paper.

Coils of the hydra with 3 mhara ghal seems fun! I’m sure your opponent would love that

Looking forward to this! Might be making some adjustments to my Nurth list.
Thanks guys, awesome episode as always, had no idea Alpha Legion had so many cool and themey tricks!
thank you guys for another solid episode. temptation to switch gears and start alpha legion is high.
My favourite thing about watching these videos is when Rob and Lee sync up their chair twisting. ;) Keep up the amazing work, gents!!!

*Connery voice* “Oh ho ho! My day has come!”
I don't know how much it changes things, but Exodus isn't unique. While ir does eat up both your jin compulsory HQ slots, you can run two if you want.
Dumb question but I can’t see anywhere on his rules that he has precision shots? How can he single out vox casters etc?
@@sonjoseph5339 His weapon has the sniper rule
@@IVIaskerade yaha! Thanks for the clarification
Also feel like the Nemesis Bolter delegatus is well served by Lerneans as your home base campers.
so one of the guys at my club keeps threatening to pick up a mastadon for alpharius to deep strike/ infiltrate it.
Ha! What a top lad! Pop a load of dreads in the bangbus and send it!
