A Katana is a type of sword. So saying “she uses a sword instead of a Katana” is kind of redundant because a Katana is also a sword. What Furina uses is a Rapier. A Rapier is a thrusting sword. You can see Furina do sword thrusts in her routine. She does something similar to Shinobu actually. Unlike with swords like Katanas you do not slash with a Rapier. You thrust forward with it. Well unlike with proper Fencing swords you can incorporate slashes if you use a rapier because they are not as thin as fencing swords but rapiers are usually more for speed. Thrusting is faster than slashing. Furina isn't a swordswoman so that's why she incorparates a mix of sword thrusts and slashes. Unlike other swords rapiers have pointy tips to pierce your enemy. Similar to a fencing sword actually. Although proper fencing swords are much thinner than rapiers. Rapiers are after all one type of sword that you can fence with. There’s of course also the proper fencing swords though. It also makes sense that Furina actually uses a rapier because fencing is really big in France. Especially during the time qhen sword fighting generally was very popular. Fontaine has a culture of dueling too and in France that was often done by fencing. A lot of sword wielding characters in Fontaine actually use rapiers and other types of thrusting swords.
