    Mr. Appleton, your mainsteam.co.uk site is an absolute treasure for anyone interested in model steam. And I can't imagine anyone wanting you to be quiet! Lovely watching you work, thank you so much!

    Thank you. I enjoyed that. I like you narration that is for sure. However, the occasional pure engine sound is very nice too. I hope one day I get to shake your hand and say thanks in person.

    more videos please! I never knew model steam engines could be so entertaining. Also please finish the rc boat series. Never got to see the boat in water.

      I am dancing as fast as I can :-)))) The owner of the two steam boats that I refurbished is in his 90,s so we are waiting until August when hopefully the weather will improve enough to sail them.

    Thanks for publishing this video on the Stuart #1 Steam Engine. I'd love to build one; but I think my little Sherline mill and lathe are too small. Very enjoyable!

    It's running like a Swiss watch now - or a properly repaired Stuart No. 1 steam engine :-) Thanks for the bonus video.

    Finding random noises on any sort of machinery takes skill, good job. BTW, my urologist also has a similar finger-poking caution posted at his practice. Nothing about steam engines, however.

      Hahaha - that's approaching my sense of humour :-))))))

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, things change when the parts get hot, but it is probably due to the expansive nature of steam, which is cushioning the piston at the end of each stroke.

    To me, notching up is just backing off the throttle when full power is not needed or do they normally have another valve inline with the boiler feed to vary the pressure?

  • @ian-c.01

    Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I detect a slight difference in the speed of the downstroke compared to the up stroke. I noticed a small leak at the lower cylinder cap in a previous video I didn't see any mention of replacing that gasket and wondered if that might be a possible cause ?
    Or could it be valve related and would it be worth investigating ?

    Hi Keith, sounds lovely, very cathartic. i also am a model flyer and have to balance the props, do you need to balance the flywheels on these engines?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the RPM isn't generally high enough to need balancing ....

    Are my eyes getting a bit dodgy or was the valve rod guide moving? It was not much but I'm certain there was a bit of movement there. Other than that another excellent series. Well done Sir, and thanks.

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this engine is not perfect. But I was asked to do a repair - not a rebuild.

  • @manicmechanic1881

    I truly love your videos sir and I hope you will suffer me a question.if the crankshaft is made of multiple pieces on these engines isn't damage possible shifting them into reverse while in operation with a flywheel that large ?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really, I need to simulate "Hooligan" use to make sure that nothing breaks. It's better if it breaks on my test bench rather than when the engine is in service . . . .

    At the very end of the video then the engine stops, the oil on the main crank has a dark silvery color. Is that just some dissolved grease/old oil or is that metallic particles and a sign of excessive wear? The oil everywhere else has a light, transparent golden color.

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      aAs I take up the wear on the bearings the engine is effectively re-running in so you get some metal residue in the oil. This runs clear after a short while.

    Good Day Sir Appleton , I am a undergraduate engineering student from South Africa , Could you be so kind and suggest where a beginner should start if they have a passion and or what to start model steam engine engineering as a hobby in spare time, because I am having eminence difficulty with finding a starting point and I would really love doing something like you are doing in my spare time and thank you for all of your TH-cam productions I enjoy them truthfully .

    Keith , I thoroughly enjoy watching your channel and am in the process of getting/picking a milling machine and am going to purchase the Stuart 10v and try to give it a go. I already bought 2 flywheels from Stuart just to see if my Harbor Freight 7 x 12 lathe would have any issues and found that it handled it pretty good. How can I send you an email with an attachment I would like to get your opinion on my first real lathe project?

    Don't take this the wrong way, it's a genuine question, why is there any noise at all? I think maybe the valve rod end always has some play in the quadrant? Presumably there has to be a little play in other parts, or the engine will just jam up? Is there always some noise from the eccentric sheaves, the crankshaft bearings, the piston connecting rod? Which provides most of the noise?

    • @steamyacht
      @steamyacht 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thisnicklldo Stephenson's link valve gear is always noisy- the sum total of all the small amount of play in the bushes, the die-block and the valve itself make for a very noisy affair. There are a few different valve gears that were used, including Hackworth, Joy and Marshall that are known as radial valve gears and these are far quieter.
      All Stuart engines are models at the end of the day, and while this engine could power a small boat, its bearing surfaces are way too small for any real work. A search on here for Steam Launch Mosquito and a search for Steam Launch Shamrock will show other ends of the spectrum for small marine steam engines, with Mosquito using a marine derivative of Stephenson's valve gear and Shamrock using Marshall valve gear.

      Look at the linkage coming from the eccentrics. In the first videos, they were loose and since this a not a rebuild, they still have the side to side play. Just a guess, since I'm a steam newbie, but watch the eccentrics and position of the crank. :-)

    Who the hell wants a whole video of just chuff chuff of an engine. Speak damnit, carry on and give us more info than we need. Ignore anyone that says you need to speak less. Then make just a 1 minute video of the engine rolling along, the people that want to just listen to the engine can put that repeat and listen all day..

      It is educational - Hearing what a well-running engine should sound like and what affects the sounds is very helpful in diagnosing engine that is not so well. And if you watch closely, you can see some run-out on main shaft, eccentric sheaves and the like. Details do matter.
