The Terrifying Reality of Ready or Not.

  • Ready or Not is widely regarded as one of the most realistic tactical shooters of all time. In fact, it's actually been critiqued by many as being "too realistic" and potentially harmful to people who've experienced similar events. While the game's portrayal IS a scary one, I feel that it serves as an important tool for learning and empathy.
Today I analyze Ready Or Not's gameplay, environment, and story -- and try my absolute best to provide insight on why realism is an important tool game developers should utilize.

The most disturbing experience for me playing this game was, a friend and I were playing Relapse, slowly walking through the eerily quiet hospital that had been turned into a slaughterhouse, every terrorist we came across either making us shoot them or shooting themselves. Halfway through the mission my friend says to me “Man I don’t like this level, I actually feel horrible.” And I couldn’t agree more, it actually felt like we were witnessing the aftermath of a terrorist attack, too late to save a majority of the patients and staff, and the attackers wanting to die than surrender.

My group had a similar experience playing Elephant, none of us knew what the map was before we got in there. We walked in and after a few seconds became pretty quiet, there was a real uncomfortable tension in the air.
The only relief was when one of the shooters walked around a corner, nobody even tried to get them to put their hands up we just mag dumped them into eternity.

Decades ago I was a Paramedic for 3 years and eventually dropped it of PTSD. I always laughed when people said video games where violent, because having to clean up actual crime scenes, I knew the games never even came close to it. Ready or Not is the first game I ever experienced where it made me uncomfortable. It's weird but it actually makes me remember smells from back then. I like the game, but I'm a bit afraid to play it. I've been a 911 dispatcher for a few years now. There's been a lot of media portraying my job. Video games like 911/112 Operator make it seem fun, horror movies make us incompetent failures, comedy shows make us ignorant smartasses.
Ready Or Not is _the only game_ that makes me feel like someone understands. I ain't gonna act like our jobs are the same as the other first responder elements - I haven't had to kick doors with gunmen on the other side, I haven't had to save victims of car accidents, I haven't had to charge into a burning building - but I'm relieved that RoN seems to get it.
I've made promises that help will get there in time that ended up being lies. I've told victims where to hide from suspects and begged them to stay quiet. I've been relieved after bad calls by supervisors who ordered me to stay at work because they wanted me to have my breakdown in a controlled space instead of at home in front of family. I know what that feels like, what that sounds like, and I rarely ever see it in any media.
I realize that this video is about the game tone overall and I'm harping on a small part of it, but I love RoN just because I finally can see - through the fake calls and the dispatch logs and briefings and more - that someone finally understands.

I've always thought that being a dispatcher would be a very rough job. Like a mix of both disconnect (you can do nothing but send the required services and wait) but also your right there with the caller in whatever situation they are in. Almost like watching though a window with no tangible way to actually help.

I recall a time I prevented someone from killing his schoolmates.
Yes, he was someone troubled, someone who was having a difficult time, bullies, social ostracization.
I didn't know him beyond anything more than the somewhat slurred, preteen voice that cracked often as we met on the internet.
I went through some similar things as him, I may or may not have tried to help but I was fucked in the head too at the time, thinking some dark thoughts as well, but never could I bear to take up arms to kill innocents of all people.
Then one day, he left me a goodbye note, saying that he doesn't blame me, that I shouldn't take it upon myself to shoulder any blame for what he was about to do, the next morning.
He lived in Connecticut, I? In NYC, and I knew none of his home life beyond what vague bits and pieces I no longer remember too well from bits and snippets in dialogue.
I panicked, called the cops, got some other friends from the internet and asked them for help.
I was afraid, was the blood going to be on my hands? Was I going to let the hands of fate ravage whatever it desired when I could put my own on lady luck's arm to prevent one of many fucking greek tragedies, things that happened and were forgotten far too many times?
I called the cops and prayed, I prayed they would find him and prevent this, the Connecticut state trooper who called me saved the day as his firearms were confiscated.
I've largely forgotten about this till now.
I should be proud, maybe, I should be relieved nobody died.
But then I remembered, he was close to becoming the monster that was made of him by cruel men who wanted nothing but assurance of their might to sate their egos.
I remember it all, the crying, the panicking, the shaking.
it's a sick cycle, samsara, oroboros, whatever you want to call it.
The serpent eats a mice, hisses after shitting out an egg, before it eats it's own tail and dies, with it's offspring continuing the cycle.

"-it's important for us to see and hear things that make us uncomfortable sometimes."
Absolutely nailed it. Broadening your horizons and being open to new perspectives is part of being a mature and wise adult. Even, and especially if those topics make you uncomfortable. We live in such a sheltered society (for most of us). We have places to sleep, food we can easily buy at the grocery store, accessible healthcare, functioning public services if we're in trouble. We don't see the true evil and depravity of the world around us because we are insulated from it, and often we take for granted the people that make sure we are insulated from it. I'm reminded of the show Burn Notice, when Michael Westen is talking to a handler on how to reel in his spy. He said something along the lines of, "Tell him it's time to come home, and that his mission is over. That he will be welcomed with open arms for the sacrifices he made. He just wants to know that his sacrifice meant something, that the nightmares he experiences every night allows others to sleep soundly."
And that basically sums up alot of military/emergency service jobs. They go through literal hell so that most of us won't have to. This shows the dark side of that world, the terrible one we are sheltered from seeing. Maybe it will help us to better understand the evil in this world and appreciate those who endure the nightmares for us.
Also, insanely well done video. Criminally underrated, can't believe you only have 6k subs. Keep up the good work dude, love the commentary

I play the game with some friends from when I was a police officer. Some of us have left cop work in recent years but we’re all still friends.
This is the only game that gets us immersed into the world.
We were playing Neon Tomb the other night and it actually got us a little bit amped. I’m not saying we got an adrenaline dump or anything but kind of got into cop mode. Speaking in tac comm and that kind of shit.
Playing Valley of the Dolls had us baring our teeth and deciding that no one here was innocent. Everyone was cuffing up and facing judgement for what happened here.
I also want to point out the 911 calls. Those people are the unsung heroes of first response. The moral courage and intestinal fortitude to answer the call, gather information, and get it to the responders in the field. Even while listening to human beings suffer and die.
I had a dispatcher sit and listen to someone be beaten to death. She could hear voices and was trying to identify how many suspects were in the house so the inbound officers had at least some information.
That woman may have saved an officers life. The three suspects were still in the house when we arrived. Hiding.
People are so quick to judge a person who is only armed with a headset, a keyboard, and their voice. But they do a job that I don’t think I could carry out.

I will never forget the first time myself and my best friend actually completed valley of the dolls. The map from a gameplay standpoint is actually pretty difficult, especially for just a 2 man, multiple stories of wide expansive glass windows and a myriad of angles that someone could shoot you from. It took us a number of attempts to actually clear the entire house and make it to the basement. We were developing our own opinion about the lore behind the map (this was before 1.0 with the massive story update) but nothing could have prepared us for what we would find in the basement. We generally will be talking about whatever while we play with game coms mixed in, this was not the case in the basement, we didn’t have words for it. When rounding the staircase into the movie room I got really uneasy and concerned at what we might find, the atmospheric storytelling was really going hard. As we pushed forward into the other rooms both of our stomachs started churning as we where finally putting everything together, every time we saw some small detail, the developing photos, the kids cloths next to barrels, the porn room set up like a nursery, the only think we could say was “oh!?” over and over again as we were continuously shocked by what we were seeing. Interestingly enough I think that is probably our most played map, not because we are some weird dark freaks, but because they locked one of our favorite cosmetics behind a perfect score on that map, which has proven to be almost impossible for our two man team. Idk how many times I have played that map but every time I find something else that makes me feel disgusted.

I think we were stuck in the classroom for two hours. The teacher knew that there was supposed to be a safety exercise, but they expected a fire alarm exercise. I would sometimes see people say this game is only for shock value or its only coppaganda.
The game micmics the horror that our real world faces. We may not see it, but its there. Perverted degenerates, idealistic militants, vengefuls terrorists, they're all here in real life. Art sometimes mimics life, and in this game Ready or Not is showing that. Its icky and its gross but these are real things some law enforcement had faced.
As for the coppaganda claim, just because a game has law enforcement as their focus characters, doesnt mean its coppaganda. From what I know, the game doesnt go "these are the absolute best! And can do wrong!". Your officers are just trying their best to uphold the little justice in a justiceless place. You even get penalized for mistakes, (ie. Killing of civilians, wrong use of force, friendly fire) the game rewards you for following orders in a orderly fashion.

    • @akusav333
      @akusav333 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +36

You misunderstand. Some call it "copaganda" because while the game is trying to mimic real-life dark scenarios and advertises itself as realistic (which is for an extent)...in the same time it pushes you for less-lethal options and arrests against full crazy high-caliber weapon suspects... For example Brisa Cove, Sulivan Slope, etc... Same thing with the game penalizing you for shooting to kill instead of only incapping the suspect, this also leads to the SWAT AI shooting a suspect exactly until he is dropped, so 80% of the time they don't kill suspects... IRL even if a lonely suspect just try to aim a rusty pistol on a cop, he becomes ementali cheese in a matter of split seconds... when someone drops the IRL police is still shooting him on the ground.... In brisa cove you try to use taser on the fully packed veteran terrorist group so u can complete objective :D
Other kind of "copagandic" thing is the way suspects are shown, apart from Kawaya Beach you can't symphatize with or undesrtand any of them, seemingly even the drug money is flowing through only brainless psychotic methheads... And no, don't tell me that on some maps like mindjot datacenter the suspects are just normal security - they don't comply and have bloodlust for swat.
PS.: I don't say the game is copaganda, but I can see where it is coming from and I thought u misunderstood sth

    • @averymicrowave1713
      @averymicrowave1713 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +58

@@akusav333 I really don't see your point about the suspects being shown as unsympathetic as - outside of the obvious gangs, traffickers and child predators all the suspects have been fleshed out especially with the 1.0 update to have clear motives and even sympathetic reasons for committing their crimes.
Obvious example are 'The Left Behind' veterans since it's heavily implied that the Senator they're targeting is only trying to defund the VA in order to pocket the money, and it's pretty clear that it's an objective betrayal of these men when even his own Secret Service detail is willing to take him and his family hostage.
You also have the Yemeni terrorist group that is conducting these attacks in retaliation for a US strike on a village and training camp. Granted, they are some of the most evil mf'ers in the game but it's pretty heavy that their zealotry comes not from fundamentalist indoctrination but an actual desire for vengeance.
The feminist cult in that one mission have been preyed upon and radicalized by a woman with whom they share the trauma of abuse and sexual assault, and it's understandable that these women want vengeance against the 'patriarchal society' that failed them.
Hell, you've mentioned the Mindjot security but they pretty much fleshed out the fact that they aren't generic bad guys looking to kill D Platoon just because, their company is going under and has been preyed upon by people claiming to be police, and considering what their bosses were doing it is understandable that they'd rather go out shooting than go to jail, even if it means defending their sleazy bosses.
The only times it's pretty clear that the suspects are objectively evil are the likes of Voll, Los Locos and the traffickers, but in that the horror lies not in why they do what they do but in how they affect the community around them. Hell, the crackheads are a pretty horrifying consequence of their actions.
Even in Early Access the maps had enough environmental storytelling to show that these aren't just generic bad guys, a lot of the suspects have serious gripes with society or are symptoms of societal issues that plague the city.

7:10 I remember walking through the club the first time and hearing all those discarded cell phones ringing. That little detail as much as anything in the mission hit me hard for some reason. Almost every mission has details like that. As a shooter, it's awesome, but as a piece of art, it's unexpected and haunting.
It also has a sign of good art: not forcing conclusions. Some might approach the game thinking "acab" and they'll be asked to live that view out in the face of exploitation and mass violence. Others approach the game touting a "thin blue line" and they'll be confronted with swatting, the complexities of drug crime, and people who feel like they're out of options.

You eventually are a victim of an IED yourself and you find yourself losing a leg. You make it back home, and all you want is for your continued VA benefits for new prosthetics, for the ongoing treatment of your TBI and all of a sudden you find those benefits disappearing because of another politician in a long line of politicians who wanna cut your benefits. Now imagine you and your combat tested friends get the idea that there's no diplomatic answer, you have to act. So you pick up a rifle, and you wobble along on your fake leg to Brisa Cove so you and your friends can take out that politician before he can end up inadvertently killing more of your brothers.

It's aspects like that that break the immersion for me. For all of the environmental storytelling, Ready or Not still feels too much like a video game. There's a ton of effort visible in the level design, and so many little details that make you appreciate how each stage is an art piece painstakingly concocted to tell its story, but at the end of the day, the bad guys have bad-guy character models, civilians have civilian character models, nothing in the game world actually does anything except for one or two specific objects that you press "F" to collect. The stages of RoN feel like incredibly well-made dioramas and a video game level was forced into them.
I always felt like the story suffered for this. There's no dialogue or different ways that a mission can end based on how you interact with it. It's only ever "how many points did you get by pressing F in the right places and did you shoot anybody by accident." Nothing you do in one stage ever affects anything that happens in another stage. The micromanagement of the officers under you is so underwhelming because they're just JPGs on your tablet with a couple of numerical modifiers based on how the last mission went. There is no meaningful dialogue anywhere in the game, excluding maybe the pre-recorded messages and dispatch calls that you can listen to (or Not).
Nevertheless, I still respect the game for its vision, and how close the level design was to achieving that vision all on its own. I just think that for an idea as gigantic as Ready or Not, the team simply did not have the means.

I've never played this game before because I, very stupidly, wrote it off as a dumb cop game and never even thought to look at gameplay videos of it. Just saw a couple clips of guys being shot and shrugged it off. But that 911 dispatch call, it made me break down in tears. When he said he forgot to tell his mom he loves her it felt way too real. Props to anyone who's a pro at this game - you've got nerves of steel, cause this is hella realistic.

In the beta, the name of the night club in neon tomb used to be “pulse,” (the big “neon” sign said pulse) before it was changed because of the obvious controversy. So it’s pretty clear the neon tomb is 100% inspired by pulse

The main reason why I love this game is that it allows me to experience these... disasters that make me uncomfortable in ways that let me take it at my own pace. I can explore the levels if I want, or I can rush through them.
If there's one thing that I've learned from this game about how it affects everything in the world, it's about comfort. This game has added fuel to the fire in my head that says "we need to start getting comfortable with being uncomfortable". These disasters happen. We, as a society, need to start getting comfortable about talking about these uncomfortable topics, or nothing is going to change. Being uncomfortable is the only way to start being comfortable.

I've been playing this game with some friends for months and can say you never fully get used to seeing the atrocities the game has you confront. This nightclub is the most in your face about it, but there are things you have to deal with on every single level. The first level has you dealing with a robbery gone wrong where you have to take down teenagers who probably couldn't even purchase beer from the gas station they were robbing. Two levels later you are stopping a drug distribution house where you can find a child tied to a bed who has clearly been injected with something. You can close your eyes and go hunting for bad guys with guns and it is still a solid tactical shooter, but once you start actually looking at what is around the bullet casings you start to see just how much of a story they can show you without ever saying a word.

There were actually a lot of missions that use to be solely rumored or theorized but became main game
Elephant, Rust Belt, 23Mb per Second, and Sins of the Father used to be rumored missions but never in the game till 1.0
Out of all of them Elephant was considered the largest changed from the main game
It, rather traumatically than enough, was going to be an elementary school with an active shooter situation (wonder what this references)
Instead it became the stressful “speed run” that is to clear every hall and room of the University of active shooters then defuse the 2 active bombs randomly placed across the map
Edit: The elephant film connection was something I never realized, I thought it was based on the saying “Elephant in the Room” for how Commonplace’s of a situation it is

okay so the historical lore for Elephant goes a little bit deeper lol, the 2003 film "Elephant" was actually inspired by the 1989 film of the same name. search up "Elephant by Alan Clark" on youtube. you can see the whole thing for free.
the 1989 film was, in a lot of ways, a political statement on what Northern Ireland looked like during those times (in short: religious/gang violence caused by the troubles.)
the name for the 1989 film was directly taken from a quote on the conflict, describing it as "the elephant in our living room."
to tie it into today, I guess you could see the school shootings of today as the "elephant in our living room" the same way the Irish saw gang violence during the 80's.

I am a first responder [Firefighter/Technical Rescuer], been one for years, I may not be a cop but I have worked my fair share of pretty horrific incidents from stabbings, child abuse, and search and rescue/recovery for kidnapping victims and murder victims. This is the first time I have seen a game that seems to really understand reality and the world we live in. It was one of the first games that I felt like the developers actually gave a damn about showing what it is actually like to be in the shoes of first responders through the eyes of a SWAT team. The 911 calls are very hard to hear, and while I rarely have heard them, the dispatchers when communicating call info to us, you can hear it in their voices. VOID made a really solid game and it is nice to see developers who understand that reality isn't pretty and that we are all humans with emotions and struggle. It is hard to make my PTSD act up through a game or show, but this game really managed to make me have to step away from my comptuer and take a moment to cool off. And for that, I have a lot of respect for the devs.

Once when i was playing airsoft in France there was a guy which was a paramedic at an active shooting scene at a school in germany a few years back then. This guy told a story about it... hell man, that was intense. They wanted to go in and help the people, but the local police wouldnt let them go because they were not sure if the shooter was still there. So the SEK Einsatzleiter (SWAT Chief) told him to shut the fuck up, they would go in and help the survivors. So when they entered the building, they had to step over the first bodies just laying there on the ground, covered by the SEK guys. They found the survivors locked in several rooms, some were hurt, some not.. a teacher was shot through the door. Sadly he didnt make it to the hospital...
Luckily the shooter was no more on the site when they got in.. he left the school and was shot later in another town several kilometers far away from the school after taking some random dude hostage with his car. I can remember this day very good, because when it got into the news, there were rumours that dude would go to another school. I was a student by myself at this time, so all stundents from this level of the schooll were locked in one classroom, the school was locked up and the doors were blocked, in case the shooter would come to us. So we all sat there, staying away from the windows, waiting and watching tv, waiting for the news and whats happenening.

All of it really conveys that authentic experience. Obviously it does unrealistic stuff like blurring your screen, but it does help convey an emotion and intensity of the moment. If they fix AI and it actually challenging and authentic to human behaviour, that would definitly make it one of the top tactical shooters.

I played with two friends, and we had just cleared the meth lab house mission where you had a million NPCs with conceiled shivs and knives that would surrender and then out of nowhere pull a knife and stab you. It was horrible and made us incredibly paranoid. But, we managed to beat it relatively handily and moved on to a mission at a birthday party. In one of the rooms we encountered a civilian who of course, immediately surrendered. Then when my friend moved to the door to secure the entry to the next room, the cililian reached for his pocket and pulled something out. My alarm signals were going off and I yelled "Gun! gun!" and shot him. Turns out he was pulling out his phone to make a photo of us and I had just murdered an innocent teenager who was just there at the wrong time at the wrong place. I felt so bad. Ready or not was one of the first games to actually make me feel unwell while playing one of its levels. This doesnt usually happen when i play games like these and really made me realize how different this game was compared to regular fps, PvE, and police/militaristic type games.

What a masterpiece of a video! The soft ambient music in the back, the tone in your voice, the cinematic camera shots. Just amazing. Keep up the good work!

I'm telling you the first time I found out about boobytrapped doors that shit hurt. I had my team split stacked on the door and I ordered them to enter and watched as all of them died instantly

Great video. The game reminds me a bit of swat 4, it had a similar slow, realistic and at times super disturbing atmosphere. Of course the technology 20 years ago didn't allow such details but for the time I think it was amazing and even nowadays some levels are giving me the chills

It’s widely regarded as a ‘spiritual successor’ to SWAT. But honestly I’ve never played the originals myself. I’ve heard a lot of love in the comments regarding that series though, so I think I’ll check it out!

@@TheIssacMorgan I'd recommend playing SWAT 4 with the Elite Force mod, I daresay it's a better overall game compared to Ready or Not, even the graphics hold up really well to this day.

It was on the fourth mission, "the spider" that I realized this game was going to tug on my heart a bit. I remember running through the map thinking "where the hell are the children." I'm kind of glad they didn't have any in the game. I was expecting a room full of kids and armed bad guys. I'm halfway through the game right now, It seems the more heartwrenching ones come in the second half. I never would have expected the game to bring you into an active shooter situation in a school of any kind.

This is one of those games where even if you get the job done you don't feel like a hero who saved the day. It shows a pretty realistic experience and the level of detail is both scary and impressive, it really shows the devs respect what law enforcement has to go through sometimes and they're truly committed to it. Hats off to them

What a wonderful game review. I guess that's how we should consume a rich content like this game. Im amazed by the way you speak, the vocabulary you choose, your tone, and in one word your narrative skill is awesome. Thank you Issac

The night club was a tough mission - going down a hallway where it was an exit door - seeing it chained up and a pile of bodies with phones going off... it's clear the terrorists barred the door with a chain and made it a kill hallway/trap ... :/
Valley of the dolls... i had to stop playing the game for the rest of the night. I've never been triggered to anger so much while playing a game (not at the game itself, but the content because we know there is evil in the world... this crap exists and happens...)
