I am a thrifty junkie. I wouldn’t have left any of it behind. I love collecting buttons. It’s getting harder to find them now days but I have purchased clothes just for buttons at times. Great thriftiness.
I have occasionally thrifted an item, taken the buttons for myself, replaced the buttons with something functional but less decortive, then returned the item to the thrift store.
I've been collecting and reclaiming so much 100% cotton lately, so it's a breath of fresh air to see fabrics that drape so beautifully or are sheer. I used to dressmake when I was younger and like you saw a fabric and could imagine it made up into a garment. I don't think an appreciation of fabric ever leaves you once you've been bitten by the bug. And buttons. And ribbons. And trims. And .... Love this haul.
I’m actually sewing that nightgown pattern right now (with changes). It definitely runs much larger than what the body measurements recommend for sizing.
There's something about how the last one sounded that was just amazing haha. I grew up in the SCA, where bedding, shower curtains, and drapes were often stolen to make period peasant garb and other fun stuff, I have a very nice vest that's made out of a scrapped couch cushion cover and it's firm enough to add extra support to the back from then. It's super nice to see so much! I'm getting back into sewing and my gran bought me a brand new Singer, so I'm excited to get going, and your videos are super helpful.
What a wonderful haul! I would LOVE to make the beautiful, drapey rayon sheet into a draped 1940s style evening gown.💗💗 I've found all sorts of wonderful sewing notions thrifting over the years but I was ecstatic to find an automatic button holer attachment for my 1950s Pinnock sewing machine that was still in its box and works wonderfully for just £1.50. That was a few years ago now and I'm still so thrilled! I've also had great luck with metal and unusual zips too. I haven't bought anything new for myself except underwear for 3 years now so thrifting is completely essential to me! 😁
Yes please! Refashioning videos please! Please? Its always so inspiring and I learn so much from them; problem solving and seeing the potential in garments. And thank you for the haul. Wonderful as always.
I also miss your refashioning videos - back then, they caught my attention and that inspired and encouraged me a lot. It would be wonderful to get treated with one every now and then!
I have a bin store (Amazon, Target, big box store returns) near me. I found 100 percent linen zip up sheets, a set of 100 percent egytian cotton zip up sheet set and bamboo blankets. Brand new $1.00 -$3.00 each. They practically give the stuff away. I put them in my fabric stash.
Happiest New Year lovely Evelyn. May all you dreams materialise 😉. Thank you so much for encouraging my favourite hobby, thrifting or as I usually say " Op-shop-hopping". 2023 ? It’ll be great being along with you.
I feel so validated when I watch your thrifting videos. I have done this since I was a young person. We didn't have much money, so my mom would take me to thrift stores and yard sales. She was marvelous at making alterations, and made many of our clothes. I now do costuming for High School and local theatre productions and use my stash if "stuff" all of the time. My biggest problem is finding enough room to store my supplies and fabric. Happy Sewing and thank you!
You are so fortunate that yr mother was ACTUALLY at the same time teaching YOU yr future career, you watching her be frugal, buying thrift clothing and altering them. Good one mum!!!
You’re like me! I did high school costuming went as far as I could there and now I’m studying tech theater in college for costumes! It’s such a cool field!!!
Recently, I discovered a thrift store in a neighboring city, just for donated sewing, craft and art supplies. I am a lifelong thrifter and sewist, so this is like a dream come true! Luckily it is a 40 minute drive away, or I'd be in trouble! Please share projects using these finds!
Sounds like a store in my city, but it takes just about anything that can be reused for art/craft. Sometimes they get some really odd donations. Once they had a pile of CPR dummies. 😂
I would love to see before and after of the very first dress you showed us, the black and white tiny flowers and big sleeves. I love thrifting for fabric and sewing notions too and have often found some real treasures for next to nothing. It would be great Evelyn if you could do a video of burn testing fabric. I have watched your videos on how to identify a fabric by touch but the burn test would also be helpful, Thank you so much for your wonderful and inspiring videos, I have learned so much from you and have been thoroughly inspired. Happy New Year! Much
I love watching your thrift finds videos-well, all of your videos. This time I felt SO bad when you said you can't find the really old patterns anymore. I have bins and drawers FULL of them. Bins of vintage fabrics, old carded buttons, zippers, trims, etc ALL vintage. We are quickly coming up to retirement and downsizing and I have no idea what to DO with it all. I see the things you are buying , and I think Oh, Evelyn....I have a box full of metal zippers, fab buttons, etc, etc. I wish you could just come over and get what you'd like!
I don’t know why I get so happy and excited watching your haul videos. It hope we get to see all the cute things you make out of the fabrics and how you update the ready made items.
Thank you so much Evelyn, I really really enjoyed looking through all those amazing and gorgeous fabrics. And I’ve never seen a rayon sheet before either. The black and grey striped material I can see you in that as a skirt, it would definitely turn heads that’s for sure!!!!! It’s stunning too. And everything you brought I would have too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags ❤❤
I inherited a button collection that includes very old shell buttons ( a few infant/child size). I estimate at least 200-300 but, mostly modern and in ones or twos. It is still the first place I look (sometimes down that rabbit hole for an hour or more) before going anywhere else. I played with many of them when I was a child (circa 1950s). I hate paying so much for new cheaply made, plastic buttons.
I'm with you about getting thrifted buttons. Sometimes really ugly old shirts have incredible buttons. Down the front, on the cuffs and collar, maybe a pocket flap, and don't forget the spare sewn to the inside of the hem!
Beautiful stuff! I can second the buttons thing. I recently made a blouse and was shocked at the sheer amount of buttons it took! 12 identical buttons were needed!! I'm definitely checking the button bins more thoroughly in the future.
I love the blue sheer. Right in style these days! I’d love to see how you style it once it’s made up. Have to brag a bit here too. I found about 5 meters of the most beautiful green silk nook at the thrift store. It was a bit pricey at 9.99 😂 for the whole piece but I couldn’t pass it up.
Evelyn, I enjoy your thrift videos. I also like the patterns from the 1970s. I recently made a dress from Simplicity 9835. The pattern was a size 10. I sized it up to a size 14. I am delighted with how it turned out.
I love little shell buttons to the point that I'm at SABLE with them, so I have to stop collecting them. (Stash Acquired Beyond Life Expectancy) I'm a bit envious of your haul. I've never had good luck thrifting for clothing and sewing items! I'm also in denial that my teen years (1980s) are now "vintage" 😂
Wow, those belt buckles were incredible finds, and your selection of thrifted fabrics was straight out of my dreams! As a thrifting sewist myself, I love discovering secondhand treasures. I think my best finds were several yards of a stunning blue velvet and a bag full of vintage sewing tools. Wishing you an amazing 2023!
Hello Evelyn, Love Yor Videos. And Your Things you Found the patterns and clothes, i really like the tiered skirts. I am trying to make my pants larger so they do not cling to my legs below my knees. So your inspirations help i havent sewed in years. I learned what i know from my grandma. I am 62 now so i keep trying. Happy New Year Thank you so much for all you do.
Every Tuesday, I go to my Goodwill store with all the things I bought the week before that aren't working for me. I use the credit I get to purchase other clothing. I also get a 15% discount on everything, since I'm a senior, on these Tuesdays. Thursdays are dollar days, but I get better deals on Tuesdays!
Bed sheets and covers are the best for material! Couple of bucks and you've got several meters of material! I also love collecting buttons and buckles! I some times purchase some items of clothing just for the buttons! I do hate that a lot of the op-shops around me tend to mix the buttons up resulting in a set of buttons being spread across two or more packs/jars... (it means i have to buy more!)
The black and white small print dress to be remade into a jumper (I don't like the sleeves either), wonderful idea. I love to go thrift shopping. I plan to do some thrift shopping next week after my doctor's appointment. I have never seen a rayon sheet either.
I'm thinking it might be microfiber or bamboo or even silk she's got there. I have NEVER seen rayon sheets; it's really not durable enough for bed sheeting!
I love your finds and ideas to reuse them. I’ve never found much that I like thrifting. However I continue to go occasionally thinking one day I’ll find something beautiful.
I LOVE thrifting and I not only get wonderful clothes but fabric and buttons and linens. You reminded me that there is a culotte pattern I want to make palazzo pants out of and I found a very thin duvet cover with wide pink and white stripes that would be perfect. So I ordered the PDF pattern and I can't wait to start! Thank you--wonderful video as always!
Thank you so much for this video! It's very timely for me personally, as I have just been given a sewing machine for Christmas. I've been wanting one for a long time so I'm excited to get started. Unfortunately, I have more enthusiasm than I do cash right now, so any source of cheap, quality fabric and supplies is a huge boon for me. You rock!
So many treasures ! I agree it's getting harder to find patterns but thank goodness we can modify the ones we own. Just before Christmas I was lucky to find a pair of very high end bath towels. Pristine condition! $5.00 Cdn each. I rarely check the towel area. Usually just the crafting, sewing and bedding department but from now on I'll add towels to my thrift mission !
I recently got a TON of old patterns from my aunt. Some as old as the 40’s. They are all cut out, but with some patience and tracing paper I can make some authentic vintage clothes.
I’m really into finding fabric but I’ve found some awesome notions. Recently I found a full set of bias binding makers. So I would have got all the things!
I should of gone thrifting with my daughter today but sadly rain stopped play here In the uk, so we have rescheduled for Friday. You had a lovely lot of good finds in your stash. I’m looking forward to our trip out. Thank you for the tips.
Made me laugh when you said it was a curtain; Carol Burnett's Gone With the Wind in my mind. I think as long as we don't live where you live, we might find something wonderful in the thrift shops, lol Beautiful finds, thanks for sharing. Happy New Year!!!!
@@trishwinstead28 Yep, I saw it too. I loved the Carol Burnett show. My aunt tried to make it in Hollywood and she told me she used to live across from Harvey Korman in the same boarding house, before he became successful, and they would share "poverty dinners" of pasta.
I've also been buying sheets and quilt covers from op shops, lately. Use them for toiles and garments. Some really good finds! Happy new year, Evelyn :)
Oooh the tape measure is identical to mine from the seventies. Still measures perfectly, no stretch. Plus, mine is 5/8 inch wide - so handy to know as I stick to that seam allowance width since I learned that way as a teenager at school. I stick to the 5/8 allowance also. I like sewing because it's so relaxing and I rarely have to think about what I'm doing, so I can let my mind wander off to other things. I am always on the lookout for vintage bark cloth. My grandma had her dining room chairs done in a Mid-Century (of course) jungle print. That stuff lasted. I haven't found modern bark cloth.
How timely! I was just re-watching your past thrift hauls! I’m so excited for you and your treasures! I always go through the sewing notions and material when I’m thrifting because of you. Many thanks for making great quality videos, I love everything you do. Happy 🎉New Year from Canada 🇨🇦
Love everything you found, gosh, you have so much work to do to make something of each of these! I have a lot of fabrics myself, waiting for me to make up my mind and find the right pattern, so my collection ends up making me feel good and not in someone else’s stash 😉
Love sheet sets that look almost unused from thrift. Duvets queens and kings priceless. Have also bought king sheet sets from discount store 100% cotton store cheaper than fabric stores. Always in fabric stores go by clearance. Now I make mock ups and I like them as primary project
Happy New Year Evelyn 💐 Thank you for your wonderful video’s, I started my first sewing project because I binged watched all of your video’s and the information was sooo helpful, you gave me the courage to “just try”. 😘 Thanks again.
Do you ever buy a stained, worn or torn piece of apparel simply for the buttons? Do you salvage buttons from your worn clothing before discarding? Grandma's salvaged button box was always fun to play in and it had a distinct smell...perhaps machine oil?
I love thrifting for sewing, bedding is my favourite, I buy all the cream or white sheets and use them for linings, thrift shops are the best for sewing notions and I always buy all the buttons 😆 I have jars of them
Hello Evelyn, thank you for this video. I love the buckles. Can you tell us more about the “burn” (???) test for fabric? Happy creative new year, I can’t wait to see more of your refashioning ideas!
There are many of good resources on the web about it. You take a small sample and put a match (or lighter or other flame source) to it. In a nutshell, non-natural fibers will melt whereas natural fibers will burn into ash. Identifying the exact fibers is more complicated than this, of course, but it's not rocket science either.
Love your goodies!! Do the patterns have dates on them? If not, how do you know how old they are? I do know newer ones have photos but that's about it.
Thrift shops and ebay - the combination dance moves. All the very, very best of the new year to you, Dear Robin, your family and to everyone you love and respect. May it be full of joy. - Cathy (&, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

Such a fun video! You scored some great things on this thrift shopping trip! I just love the peg (we in the USA call them clothespins) belt buckle!
Thank you for reminding me, on the other types of fabrics that can be used in dress making😀

I have a lot of fabrics myself, waiting for me to make up my mind and find the right pattern, so my collection ends up making me feel good and not in someone else’s stash 😉
I made a dress from a thrifted sheet! I love it.
Stripe fabric will make fabulous palazo pants
Thirft stores with sewing notions just verifies that its been an age old issue for sewists to collect notions with aspirations and never use them!
Sound of Music: Julie Andrews sewing up clothing for the children from the drapes 😂
LOL. I had visions of Scarlett O'Hara.
Great thrift finds.
Thank you very much! Happy new year!
Wow I like that tape measurement.
Great finds.
So I should change my tape? I have had it so long.
My favorite item of all, I think, is the peg buckle! How cute is that??? I would love it.
I love thrifting for sewing, bedding is my favourite, I buy all the cream or white sheets and use them for linings, thrift shops are the best for sewing notions and I always buy all the buttons 😆 I have jars of them
Lovely treasures, Happy New Year 🎉
Hello Evelyn, thank you for this video.
Nice patterns. 👍🏼
Love your goodies!!
Do the patterns have dates on them? If not, how do you know how old they are? I do know newer ones have photos but that's about it.
Happy New Year. Thank you for all your videos. I have learned so much from you. Looking forward to what you bring us in 2023.
Happy Blessed New Year Sweet Lady!❤
Please show us the after of your garment flips.
Happy New Year 🎉
I never find anything second hand. I am so jealous 😂
That knitted fabric made a question pop into my mind: when you design a knit garment do you use a knit fabric for the toile?
Wow great haul. It’s amazing what you can find at thrift shops. The vast majority of my sewing tools and supplies come from there!
Thrift shops and ebay - the combination dance moves.
