Imagine me, an American, seeing my good pals come to America saying they want to enjoy the cuisine. Imagine my horror when I see all of the red white and blue dyed cookies, cakes, and cheap snacks Americans never purchase. Imagine my frustration seeing them go to buffets rated 3 stars on google, refusing to go to any restaurant that isn't Denny's, Ihop, or Burger King. Telling me they want "The American food". Me, an American, trying to take them to actual food places for Gelato and Pho restaurants. Me, an American, probably having to go through that again in about two days.

I wonder if the bias toward newbie creators for the panels might have been because Vidcon might have thought there'd be a large demographic of attendees who were more "Aspiring TH-camrs" than established creators. That said if its true the amount of bad advice and scammers slinking around is concerning. Btw this came out great! What a fun video!

man, this review of vidcon was SAVAGE 😂 (and the fact that it released days before vidcon 2024 starts was not lost on me). I'm a vidcon veteran, I've been to almost every one since their third year, and so I've seen the massive changes it's undergone since then. For a good stretch, they really seemed to stop caring at all about anyone who wasn't a super famous creator or their screaming fans; there are a few more all-creator-level-inclusive panels, but absolutely as you said, the push is on GETTING sponsorships, not on how to ethically maintain one or what kind of sponsorship to look for or anything. You can tell who are pulling the purse strings of vidcon organization, for sure. honestly the main reason I go to vidcon at all is just to be around other people who at least WATCH an online creator regularly...I moved to Portland, OR almost a decade ago from my hometown San Diego, and it's extremely rare to meet someone who watches anything more personable online than clips of actual tv shows and/or "try not to laugh" cat videos. I have long wished for a much smaller, actually by-creators-for-creators 18+ event, just so that it's not so dependent on catering to the 14 year old fangirl crowd who...are fine, I'm not saying they shouldn't exist, but ad execs and panel designers are always going to have much different focuses for young teens than young (or not so young) adult creators. I'm only about halfway through the video and I gotta go to bed so I can get all packed and ready to go to vidcon tomorrow, but I'm impressed by your brutal honesty, really an animated version of Swell Entertainment XD I subscribed of course, and will definitely check out more of your videos in the future! (Maybe on the flight down to anaheim, if I can unclench my toes from my terror of flying long enough 😏)
So I did something interesting and got a result. First I tracked down an image of the vidcon front page and then found a program that scans images to give a percentage of if something is done by a human or an AI. Not sure if it is trust worthy but the results came back as 93% Human and 7% Artifical. I am gonna try and keep looking but at the moment it seems they may have not credited their artist
Those are generally really unreliable in my experience. From what I've seen it seems to base its tests on how close the art resembles "AI art styles" and so it calls a lot of artists with the original styles AI and AI artists with more diverse or unique batches real. I'm not sure if it's AI or not, but I wouldn't trust those tests.

Either due to some artists being mistaken for Ai Art or Ai Art getting too good at replicating styles. It honestly doesn't paint a good picture for the future sadly.

Preeeeetty sure the photographer-turned-youtuber guy being talked about runs a "family channel" but he started as a photographer with dance photos and videos. Unless another yter has done the same thing (unfortunately not uncommon in the "family" channel genre, ew). Supposedly he realized that photos/videos of child dancers got more views, especially certain poses, so he started doing that more and then move on to forcing his own kids into his videos. He even does videos of his own kids in swimwear or underdressed. People have called him out on this and he just ignores the VERY OBVIOUS audience that he's pandering to. When someone quacks like a duck....
I'd love to see you do more vlog-style videos like this, the casual presentation was really pleasant to just sit back and draw to. I'm not at all familiar with VidCon, at least not its modern incarnation, so your experience was pretty interesting. Two things I noticed: 1. The cosplayer on the right at 14:04 is not a Monster High character, they're actually a Magic Mixies Pixling [you can see the doll they're cosplaying tucked into their dress]! I totally see the mix-up though, that Pixling in particular looks like a mix between G1 and G3 Lagoona Blue from MH. 2. I doubt that the VidCon art shown at 30:09 is AI. I've seen quite a bit of AI images, including from people who use custom training sets and do post-processing, and I very rarely see anything with that clean/crisp of lines - and at that point, it'd probably just be easier to find some guy on Fiverr to illustrate it. I think a lot of the elements that don't make sense are simply meant to be surreal [the water melding into sky could honestly be cool in a more cohesive piece, same with the non-euclidean arch] and the tangents are just sloppy work.

Yeah, I came across the videos, left a series of comments on one of his videos, see now someone commenting about it here. My impression is that this Akumu guy has a fixation on whoever criticised him in the past, in one of his videos he even tagged someone who had forgotten about a twitter convo with him in 2020. Right. 2020. I guess, he can’t let go of the past events and cultivates an audience who wants someone to trash on others they dislike. In my interactions with him he says he made himself a promise to “unmask” the art community or something, sounding like some emo anime avenger. To be honest, I don’t think Ponder needs/has to react to him. he is not open to what anyone has to say, I mean, he still makes content on criticism from four years ago, that man is better to be treated as a troll, ignoring him is the best way to go about him. It is a pity he acts like this because campaigning against people is such a waste of breath.
Your the only one who i have heard who has gives out to stuff to ppl who meet them and that is one of the sweetest things I've heard. Also, hood idea to plan your panels weeks in advance. Have fun this year!
For the front page art, I think I was made by a real person, I’ve see a lot of AI “art” and the problems in the art don’t really fall within the general trops of ai, it really looks like a beginner artist made it, strange tangents and nonsensical shading and coloring problems is something that screams beginner. And they probably weren’t payed a lot or at all for it so fine tuning would not be the biggest priority. Vidcon might have also ordered the art really last minute ergo the same situation with fine tuning. Really enjoyed the video All ways lovely to see a upload from you :)

I’ve always wanted to go since I was a lil tater but seeing all those… interesting panel topic I’m not too interested anymore LMAO (though as you said 2023 didn’t seem like a flowering year for them) Aside that The lil clips and stories between everything was so fun and entertaining!! Hey, fellow vulture here! I don’t know exactly what bird bones those are, but a lot of bird remains (specifically native species) are actually illegal to possess in the United States! Even feathers are illegal to possess. In some cases, it can lead to an entire collection being confiscated. I don’t know if you were already aware of this and either have a permit or only collect invasive species, but I just thought I’d give you a heads up anyways!

I can barely tolerate large crowds. Me have story time. But some little context before that. I can be large crowds TECHNICALLY. As long as I have personal space, and you don't smoke near me. Like be 100 feet away, don't smoke near me. This was before I really got covid. Like almost a year prior. That said. Halloween Horror night in Orlando Florida, universal studios. 2021 was thee literal worst. My father wanted to go, and so me and my youngest brother went with. I wanted to go because it would be my first and probably last one. You will get that answer soon. Things were just fine at first. Till the first haunted house. It was Frankenstein themed. Um. My brother and father had sunglasses. I did not. I was nearly impossible to scare via. Literally, cannot seeing. According to my father I would nearly walk into actors. They would have to move out of the way for me. My eyes didn't get to adjust because I still had no sunglasses. So yeah, my excitement slashed by half. But the day wasn't unsalvageable. Until the Beetlejuice house. Before it the long was horrible. My father even noted that of the ten houses he was shocked at the fact we got to do five. He was expecting to do 2. But in the line. The crowd was getting big. And it was a really long line. And even worse. Someone was smoking. Kept smoking. And was even told by staff that they needed to stop smoking. So yeah. I was coughing. In 2021. At Halloween Horror nights. I am 1000 percent positive people thought I had covid. Looking back on it now. I did have more space when I started. I actually got to enjoy the Beetlejuice house anyways because I could actually see everything, and liked it... My enjoyment died when I noticed I was having a panic attack not long after. The crowd has horrific. It was worse than greengots opening day. And then fireworks went off. I was already trying to get out. Hands over my ears, just trying to muffle the noise. Oh did I forget to mention. The sun had set. And my ability to see was nuked with an orbital strike cannon. I proceeded to walk my shin into concrete. Sharp. Corner. Concrete. My family was incredibly understanding on getting me the fuck out of there. As I semi limped all of boardwalk to the parking garage. My family reassured me that they had a wonderful time, and that it went beyond their expectations. That getting me out of the park was their priority. It honestly felt nice after the fact. During I felt guilty and just depressed. Like I killed all the fun. But that's not the case. My father did note this: "There was a lot more people than there was last year." A part of me really want to be passive aggressive to just relieve some stress, but that failed the moment I had start speaking. I just said something else. To be frank. You're vidcon experience could have been worse. So don't worry ponder. I do hope you enjoy yourself at your next con.
I have to wonder how Vidcon would be for me, given I'm blind and autistic. I always wanted to check out a convention as I haven't been to one outside of Keycon, which is small (that's the one where I met Annice Moriarty and Rene Auberjonois). Do you think I'd have issues navigating that place where Vidcon was?
From this video it looks like there are no areas where you can just chill and be alone so it might not be good if you get overstimulated easily. Also, this is from a video I watched years ago so they might’ve changed the layout, but I remember a blind TH-camr went to vidcon and he would’ve had trouble navigating if it weren’t for his cameramen being there. This was because all the braille signs were in a hard place to find like behind the opened doors.
@@aperson2140 Oh ok thanks. At Keycon, it was at the Radisson Hotel in Winnipeg, so there was always the possibility to go up to my room and get some downtime without exiting the con, though it was always crowded. This was back in 2012, though.
As a fellow stoner who started with edibles...yeah don't take edibles first or at best, take the lightest ones you can find. My first high I was drooling, seeing colors and watching my mother scoop mayo with a spatula because spoons and knives were untrustworthy. I've been taking edibles for over a year now and I still don't take a full one unless I absolutely want to get smashed. Do drugs responsibly kids, know your limits.

30:18 I will not STAND for this tangent hate! I know tangents are hated and heavily discouraged by artists, but I love them. If you're not drawing a human/animal/character, I think tangents are great for leading your eye through the drawing.
The points about that leaflet being ai didn’t really stand up, tangents is a problem a lot of artists face without even realising aswell as colour choices clashing with others. I think it would’ve been better if you contacted vidcon to get an answer before making that point. I get that can seem like too much effort when you aren’t even accusing it of being 100% ai but this video will reach a lot of people and it would’ve been best to get a clear answer To me the art looked like a beginner graphic designer just starting out on photoshop

My impression is that this Akumu guy has a fixation on whoever criticised him in the past, in one of his videos he even tagged someone who had forgotten about a twitter convo with him in 2020. Right. 2020. I guess, he can’t let go of the past events and cultivates an audience who wants someone to trash on others they dislike. In my interactions with him he says he made himself a promise to “unmask” the art community or something, sounding like some emo anime avenger. To be honest, I don’t think Ponder needs/has to react to him. he is not open to what anyone has to say, I mean, he still makes content on criticism from four years ago, that man is better to be treated as a troll, ignoring him is the best way to go about him. It is a pity he acts like this because campaigning against people is such a waste of breath.
Your the only one who i have heard who has gives out to stuff to ppl who meet them and that is one of the sweetest things I've heard. Also, hood idea to plan your panels weeks in advance. Have fun this year!

For the front page art, I think I was made by a real person, I’ve see a lot of AI “art” and the problems in the art don’t really fall within the general trops of ai, it really looks like a beginner artist made it, strange tangents and nonsensical shading and coloring problems is something that screams beginner. And they probably weren’t payed a lot or at all for it so fine tuning would not be the biggest priority. Vidcon might have also ordered the art really last minute ergo the same situation with fine tuning.

Hey, fellow vulture here! I don’t know exactly what bird bones those are, but a lot of bird remains (specifically native species) are actually illegal to possess in the United States! Even feathers are illegal to possess. In some cases, it can lead to an entire collection being confiscated. I can barely tolerate large crowds. Me have story time. But some little context before that. I can be large crowds TECHNICALLY. As long as I have personal space, and you don't smoke near me. Like be 100 feet away, don't smoke near me. This was before I really got covid. Like almost a year prior. That said.
Halloween Horror night in Orlando Florida, universal studios. 2021 was thee literal worst. My father wanted to go, and so me and my youngest brother went with. I wanted to go because it would be my first and probably last one. You will get that answer soon. Things were just fine at first. Till the first haunted house. It was Frankenstein themed. Um. My brother and father had sunglasses. I did not. I was nearly impossible to scare via. Literally, cannot seeing. According to my father I would nearly walk into actors. They would have to move out of the way for me. My eyes didn't get to adjust because I still had no sunglasses. So yeah, my excitement slashed by half. But the day wasn't unsalvageable. Until the Beetlejuice house. Before it the long was horrible. My father even noted that of the ten houses he was shocked at the fact we got to do five. He was expecting to do 2. But in the line. The crowd was getting big. And it was a really long line. And even worse. Someone was smoking. Kept smoking. And was even told by staff that they needed to stop smoking. So yeah. I was coughing. In 2021. At Halloween Horror nights. I am 1000 percent positive people thought I had covid. Looking back on it now. I did have more space when I started. I actually got to enjoy the Beetlejuice house anyways because I could actually see everything, and liked it... My enjoyment died when I noticed I was having a panic attack not long after. The crowd has horrific. It was worse than greengots opening day. And then fireworks went off. I was already trying to get out. Hands over my ears, just trying to muffle the noise. Oh did I forget to mention. The sun had set. And my ability to see was nuked with an orbital strike cannon. I proceeded to walk my shin into concrete. Sharp. Corner. Concrete. My family was incredibly understanding on getting me the fuck out of there. As I semi limped all of boardwalk to the parking garage.
My family reassured me that they had a wonderful time, and that it went beyond their expectations. That getting me out of the park was their priority. It honestly felt nice after the fact. During I felt guilty and just depressed. Like I killed all the fun. But that's not the case. My father did note this: "There was a lot more people than there was last year." A part of me really want to be passive aggressive to just relieve some stress, but that failed the moment I had start speaking. I just said something else.
To be frank. You're vidcon experience could have been worse. So don't worry ponder. I do hope you enjoy yourself at your next con.

I have to wonder how Vidcon would be for me, given I'm blind and autistic.
I always wanted to check out a convention as I haven't been to one outside of Keycon, which is small (that's the one where I met Annice Moriarty and Rene Auberjonois).
Do you think I'd have issues navigating that place where Vidcon was?
From this video it looks like there are no areas where you can just chill and be alone so it might not be good if you get overstimulated easily.
Also, this is from a video I watched years ago so they might’ve changed the layout, but I remember a blind TH-camr went to vidcon and he would’ve had trouble navigating if it weren’t for his cameramen being there. This was because all the braille signs were in a hard place to find like behind the opened doors.

At Keycon, it was at the Radisson Hotel in Winnipeg, so there was always the possibility to go up to my room and get some downtime without exiting the con, though it was always crowded. This was back in 2012, though.

The points about that leaflet being ai didn’t really stand up, tangents is a problem a lot of artists face without even realising aswell as colour choices clashing with others. I think it would’ve been better if you contacted vidcon to get an answer before making that point. I get that can seem like too much effort when you aren’t even accusing it of being 100% ai but this video will reach a lot of people and it would’ve been best to get a clear answer
