Ben came from Ohio, and when he died it hurt us all because most of us had family members who went to school with him and were friends with him. Ben never forgot his friends he grew up with. RIP Benjamin Orzechowski (Orr) PS….This song has such a haunting melody, it’s unmistakable, you’ll always know it’s Ben. My favorite!❤
The Cars were a great band that had two lead singers: Ric Ocasek who was skinny, pale, and had that distinctive hiccup vocal a la Buddy Holly. Benjamin Orr was the sex symbol of the band. A helluva bass player and vocalist too. They both had that minimalist, almost robotic style of singing in The Cars early albums, but they both evolved. This song was a huge hit back in the day. So sad we lost Benjamin at such a young age. ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
#2 on the US Adult Contemporary and #6 on the US Album Rock Tracks charts. The video got a lot of airplay on MTV. That’s how I remember this song - and it’s a good one! It’s got a Miami Vice Crockett driving alone in the Ferrari vibe.
@@markhagerman1837 Thank you, Mark! I actually went out driving a few months ago. Needed to clear my head and was listening to some 80s tunes and that was one of them. Another good one is “Major Tom” by Peter Schilling.
I'm a huge Cars fan, and Benjamin is my favorite singer of all time so I really appreciate this reaction. He wasn't a "back up singer", he and Ric were both lead vocalists for The Cars. Ric even stated that if the song needed a great vocal it went to Ben, who was by far the better singer of the two in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, Ric's quirky voice was better suited for a lot of their songs, I just preferred Benjamin. Please react to Bye Bye Love, Moving in Stereo and All Mixed Up which are my favorites sang by Ben. Another of my favorites, this one sang by Ric is Dangerous Type. RIP Ben and Ric.😥
I met him on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where I was working at an electronics store in the late 1980s. Kind and humble man. He was living in the tiny town I grew up in. Had no idea who he was, despite his band having major airplay on MTV. He enjoyed the anonymity. RIP…
Benjamin Orr was much more than a backup singer for the Cars.I saw them in the summer of '79 Listen to their first two albums (Cars and Candy - O) and you'll hear Orr singing lead on several of their songs.
One of the most overlooked musicians of the '70s, '80s and '90s. Stellar songwriter and a great voice! Benjamin Orr was the epitome of '80s cool, not only with "The Cars", but as a solo artist.
Benjamin Orr really isn't underrated -he was widely respected, although people of a certain age didn't realize until the "drive" video, that Ric Ocasek and Benjamin had been sharing lead vocal duties for years. lol. This solo record was really the first time he tried to write lyrics - and had the help of his girl at the time. Such a great voice, and that IS underrated. I urge anyone to go see live performances of those early Cars song....he can do anything. And i would point out that Ric Ocasek stated more than once than Orr nailed the vocal track on "Drive" in "1 or 2 takes, as usual."
I've loved this song since it came out in 1986. The whole album is very good! By the way, some of the Cars biggest hits were sung by him including their biggest hit "Drive"!
One of the founding members of The Cars along with Rick Ocasek, Benjamin was the bassist and co lead singer. This was from his solo debut album from 1986. A great tune, with great vocals and a memorable melody. It made it to Number 24 on the charts. Sadly he passed away at 53 from pancreatic cancer. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I always loved Benjamin Orr, in or out of The Cars. Such a wonderful voice, gone too soon. You guys need to check out The Cars "Moving In Stereo", with Benjamin singing lead. It's a trip to listen to with headphones! Great tune!
"The Lace" is a great album. The vinyl is also hard to find and is considered a collectable....which I have still in its original shrink wrapped package.
The Cars had two lead singers both passed away Benjamin Orr who had the total package: looks, vocals plus played bass guitar and Ric Ocasek who sang the quirky songs and also played rhythm guitar.
Oh I love this song. To me it's soul stirring. I remember it well when it was first released in 1986. Btw, Ben Orr is not just backing vocals in The Cars. He was also the lead singer.
Benjamin sang a lot of the cars hits and doesn’t get enough credit. Listen to The Cars “Just What I Needed” “ Let’s Go”. , “Drive”, “Moving In Stereo “ there are many more! He and Ric were both lead singers of the band
While Ric was the songwriter, he and Ben split the lead vocals pretty evenly. Ben sang most of the Cars' biggest hits, like Just What I Needed, Let's Go, and Drive.
So glad you are getting to Mr. Orr's solo work. He was one of my favorite bassists/vocalists of the late 70s-early 80s. By all accounts, a very good human as well. He was the complete package, the essence of a rock star. RIP Benjamin.
So it's pronounced Ric (Oh-kay-sic) Ocasek, yes he was the lead singer but Benjamin Orr sang a fair number of songs for the band also. I remember watching them being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, each member talked about Benjamin Orr and what he meant to each member and just to the band, so sad Ric passed away about a year later but great he was there to be inducted and perform...great night for Rock N Roll !!
Benjamin Orr often sang lead on Car's songs. He was more than just a bass player and background singer, he was also the co-founder of the band, along with Ric Ocasek. You can hear him singing lead on songs such as "Drive" and "Just What I Needed."
I loved Benjamin Orr, so sad that he left us way too soon. This song always came on when I was working late at the office, would have my clock radio on and focusing on my work. It was so much fun. I miss those days.
Orr was the co-lead singer of The Cars. Ocasek always insisted that Orr sang what he viewed as the better songs (songs with most potential) because Orr had the better voice.
Great song. Though he did do the lead vocals on many Cars songs, this was really his only solo hit ("Too Hot to Stop" also got some minor airplay.) So sad that we lost him at the young age of 53. Truly a phenomenal talent. FYI - Ric Ocasek also had a few solo songs, "Emotions in Motion" was the most notable.
"Too Hot to Stop" is one of my favorite workout songs from that era! It took me many years to find it online - I only remembered a five-second clip with the lyric "It's about time" from an MTV commercial, and didn't think to look for Ben Orr rather than the Cars when I searched for it.
Actually, he sang the majority of their biggest songs like "Drive," I would call he and Rick as co-lead vocalists with either singing back-up. Orr could sing a phone book and make folks cry. He was that smooth.
My face lit up when I saw this song pop-up on your channel! Stay the Night was on Benjamin's solo album, The Lace. I listened to his solo album a lot when I was in HS and college, especially when I was going through my first serious break-up. Having said that, I get EXACTLY where Jay is coming from - - this song is for a certain type of mood and definitely not a rocker (i.e., not a classic rock, Cars-type tune). I still think Ben's solo stuff is good, but I don't go out of my way to listen to his stuff anymore (except tonight, when I watched your reaction!). Again, Jay, I get where you're coming from. However, Amber - I'm VERY glad that you liked this song! Also glad you both gave this a chance!!! You both should give Ric Ocasek's solo stuff a try! I recommend: Something to Grab For; Keep on Laughing; True to You; Coming for You; Prove; Riding Shotgun.
Jay, the fact that the two of you don't always agree is something I appreciate. It means you're honest and not every song is going to be for every person.
A lot of this music, from this era used the synthesizer keyboard 🎹 a great deal. This is a perfect example of their use. I like his gentle delivery singing.
Loved this song when it came out and still do. So sad that Benjamin Orr died so young. He had a great voice, banging guitar player and handsome. RIP Ben.
Give Ben credit. He sang Just What I needed, Bye Bye Love, Lets Go, Drive, Cruiser, Candy O, Moving in Stereo and All Mixed Up, among others. The Cars were a LOT more than Ric Ocasek (okaysick)
Benjamin Orr is definitely not a “back-up” singer.. He sang lead on a huge percentage of The Cars hits.. “Drive” “Just What I Needed” “Bye, Bye Love” to name a few. His voice is very similar in sound to Ric Ocasek’s but, definitely stronger. Even Ric Ocasek said as much.
Benjamin Orr did half the lead vocals on all the Cars albums. You've reacted to a few that he sang lead on. Check out All Mixed Up, It's All I Can Do, Let's Go, goodness any song by The Cars Is Awesome!
There was thing that we had back in the day called "Radio" and some songs were made for just listening to on the radio. ...no dancing, no rocking and rolling, just listening. This was one of them songs.

The Cars are one of my all-time favorite bands. He and Ric Ocasek were fantastic lead vocalists, and the whole band was freaking awesome.
Benjamin Orr, great singer, shy, wonderful musician, gorgeous looking and lost way too young. R.I.P. always Ben.
I met him at a DEVO concert. I still have his autograph.
What did he die from?

He was the lead singer for the song Drive. He always seemed very humble
I didn't know. I knew about ocasek, heard he was mean to Paulina

Benjamin sang lead vocals on quite a few of The Cars tunes including two of their biggest hits. Just What I Needed and Drive.
My 2 favorite Csrs songs
Let's Go and All Mixed Up, two more of my favorites.
Bye Bye Love!
@@brianmcmaster5112 An easy agree for me. I enjoy a lot of Cars songs of course. But these are the only 2 on my playlist
Drive was my favorite ❤
Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek were both lead singers for The Cars.

He did have a wonderful voice. RIP 💙
The most haunting voice in rock. Saw The Cars on Shake it Up and they were great! RIP Benjamin Orr.
Benjamin Orr passed away in 2000. He was a fantastic talent that left us too soon.
Such a beautiful song by a great GREAT Artist. This powerful ballad is a beauty. When Artists had a soul and heart
