I have to tell you, I’ve ridden/trained/competed on, horses my entire life...30+ years...and I pull 95% of my mustang gentling and training skills from your videos. It amazes me that you’re as young as you are, have only been in the horse world for a few years, and have the abilities that you have! You are a true example of a horsewoman...born with your talents and “feels” for the trade. You are truly blessed, as are the mustangs you adopt and train. I just recently adopted my 2nd mustang, after training and adopting out my first. I found myself kinda “stuck” in some areas with my 1st, so I started searching TH-cam for tips...that’s when I found you and your videos. I’m so glad I did, bc being a horsewoman myself and understanding what I’m seeing when I watch you, I’m like, “ok! So that’s how you do it!” You’re amazing sis, keep up the great work!! 💜🦄💜
While they were working on the pen... Sam: I know theres work to do but look at the horse. Also it looks like you got lucky, the mustang that you got has really good body language. She is scared but she's droping her head and trying to figure things out and reaching with her head and neck. Witch is what you want from a mustang.
Congrats on your girl! And thanks for stating all those facts about mustangs. My mustangs love being domesticated horses. They had to round up from my filly’s herd which is unusual but they had to because they were all starving. She’s literally the best filly ever, that herd is amazing
She's such a beautiful mare, I mean they're all gorgeous but she does stand out. Lilac would be a cute name to match her halter, then again I've named my young colt War so can I be trusted hahah.

Such a good little mare. She seemed to handle herself quite calmly here too despite a stressful situation. I loved this one from the beginning for her calm and curious demeanor, glad to see it is shown here too. Will be interesting to see how she transforms once she's no longer stressed.
Good on you for adding that disclaimer. People spend too much time thinking with their heart and not with their mind. The work you guys are doing is 10x better than much easier options for herd management of a species with pretty much no natural predators. The folks making nasty remarks clearly have never seen "Barn cat syndrome" Or seen disease spread through a population of whatever critter. The reason we have the natural resources we have today is with actual management. The other option is get rid of the people to make more space for them....
I would love to see a video on how you travel so far with your horses. I see your trip here was 17+ hours. Would love to see the details that go into it. I also have to say THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK! And thank you even more for sharing it! It’s really helped in my research of what to expect when I can finally bring home my own mustang.
When I first saw them gathering the wild horses I thought it was mean, but I'm one that must know WHY things are done so I watched a video and it all became clear.. I believe it was in Australia that they had horses thin, starving and dieing at waterholes.. Australia does shoot them, so gathering them here and controlling birth rates seems much more humanitarian than killing them.. I just love your abilities to work with horses. You make it look so easy, which its definitely not!! Keep up the great work..
These horses must be the cream of the crop, ( look wise) our local wild horses look wild. Long mainland tails. Thick neck look more like miniature draft horses. These look more refined. But you folks paid a decent amount for them and the black went for a crazy 6000+ great job to everyone who willing to take on training a mustang in general. More power to you girl!!

I fear though you will not make any headway convincing those anti-mustang management people... they don't want reason, they are convinced they are right. It's a belief...can't reason with belief. But keep doing what you are doing, I like following you. You should get a logo on some T-shirts or some merch! Keep those videos coming, I plan to stop out to Paul's Valley myself when I get home this summer and am considering getting a mustang or two myself.

That is a lovely group if horses well done. I'm based in UK & of course we don't have opportunity to have one if these beautiful souls. The only part of these roundups if the round up I hate is the foals & mother separation I have seen. I don't feel it's right to be taking mothers foals or their herd stallion from wild only excess mares and older colts & adults. But I do understand the realities of what you were saying regarding sustaining land - if that side was addressed - that foals & mothers were left together with their herd stallion & re-released it would be much more acceptable to most people I think you'd find. Just putting my thoughts out there from outside looking in!

Okay I've got to ask. I can definitely tell they are a smaller horse but are they Hardy enough to carry a full grown man? I can definitely see that they are put together very well and are a small muscular horse. I was just wondering

I was excited she said yes and replied with all the times I could observe but perhaps it was too late. I'll try again and when the timing is right it will work out. I am enjoying my veeery tame Natural Horsemanship Class horse Zak. Very easy to catch in the pasture but we are going to do it for my sake to practice doing that with other horses around. I think it's great that folks like you are willing to adopt these mustangs to train them and make sure they go to good homes. I'm wondering - what happens to the ones that don't get bid on or adopted? I see so many auctions where horses are bid on for cheap and sent directly to kill pens. How do we avoid such horrendous treatment? Also - people always tend to make issues black or white, but as a wildlife ecologist I'd just like to add that YES, modern horses are technically feral, not 'wild', because they were re-introduced in the last few hundred years. Human management can help so that herd sizes don't overpopulate and suffer. However, it's ALSO true that a big reason the BLM removes so many mustangs is to make way for ranchers (who are a powerful special interest group) who raise cattle because this is a huge $ maker, and these cattle destroy the land/soil as much or more than horses. So it's a complicated issue with some people trying to do their best in the situation, while others are just trying to make money. Cattle are huge contributors to land erosion, greenhouse gas emissions, forest clearing, etc. and are often treated with less humanely than the horses that are removed from the land. Most of the choices we make in this area are based on our own priorities and values, not the natural ecology of the system. Not saying that's always wrong, that's just what it is. In addition, the roundups often lead to traumatic injuries and death of horses, both adults and foals, and break up family herds and close bonds. We could do a lot better in 'managing' feral herds with more birth control methods and less round-ups. I see a lot of abandoned, abused mustangs in the rescues I work for. Again, I'm still grateful for those who work hard to provide loving homes to those mustangs that are removed from their open land.
I applaud what you are doing with these mustangs, that are sitting in a holding pen with no future unless somebody adopts them. You make that possible for some of them. BUT, I adopted a yearling om 1997 or 1998, BORN in BLM holding, in Arizona. They swore he'd been wormed etc and taken good care of, and he was very tame, so that seemed to be correct, although I wondered why he was so small for his age. Within a week, I had to watch him die a most gruesome death, banging himself into walls, throwing himself on the ground with force, he was in so much pain. 4 big adults could not prevent him from doing this. A vet was present throughout the day, but there was nothing we could do for him. When he died, I asked the vet to open him up right then and there, I wanted to know what the heck had happened! He was stuffed with worms from one end to the other, his intestines all black. In other words, he died of gangrene because of worms, and this did not happen overnight, he was dead on his feet long before I adopted him. Hundreds of hundreds of horses in small holding pens, not being taken proper care of, then this is what happens. I cannot begin to describe the anguish I went through with him. To this day, I cry when thinking of it. BLM's reaction? "Well, that's just too bad. No, sorry, no refund, come pick up another horse if you want." Like I would EVER touch a BLM horse again? So, sorry, but I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT BLM. That being said, the mustangs that survive BLM, and land in your care, are the lucky ones. I love what you do.
My question is: aren't mustangs dealing with encroachment from ranchers who are using public land to graze their cattle? Does that not contribute to the problem facing mustangs today?
I think that it proves that the horses doesnt have much to live on in the wild since alot of them are pretty skinny on pickup and gain weight fast in the care of the trainers. Imagine how they would look if they were free to breed without limits

But i do really understand what you are saying I just feel like it's unnecessary to take ad many mustangs as they do like why cant they relocate them somewhere else if they are worried about them running out of food? horses are unfortunately not native to north america and are an invasive species, they have barely any predators in north america and they just should not have ever been allowed to become wild in the first place, theyre a completely domesticated species and the more of them we can remove from the wild and put into forever homes the absolute better. there are way too many of them and they reproduce too fast for the environment to keep up with, regardless of where they are. if we captured horses and just released them in different places wed literally worsen the problem, bc then we'd have the same problem happen in multiple locations at the same time, they dont just stop breeding
They’re an invasive species. There’s no room to relocate the horses, the area where they are allowed is already overrun, so the BLM is doing a good job with all the programs they have. If they were to not take as many as they do now, those would probably starve to death due to the lack of food, as well as taking in the amount they do isn’t bad. They have the proper space and care for them, so why is it a concern? I kind of get what you’re saying, but the BLM is doing what’s best for the horses well being, and although you may like the horses being free, they’re invasive as well as they’re starving and dying.

I think the BLM only adopts our horses that have been in holding for a year+, to ensure no pregnancies

I applaud what you are doing with these mustangs, that are sitting in a holding pen with no future unless somebody adopts them. You make that possible for some of them.
BUT, I adopted a yearling om 1997 or 1998, BORN in BLM holding, in Arizona. They swore he'd been wormed etc and taken good care of, and he was very tame, so that seemed to be correct, although I wondered why he was so small for his age. Within a week, I had to watch him die a most gruesome death, banging himself into walls, throwing himself on the ground with force, he was in so much pain. 4 big adults could not prevent him from doing this. A vet was present throughout the day, but there was nothing we could do for him. When he died, I asked the vet to open him up right then and there, I wanted to know what the heck had happened! He was stuffed with worms from one end to the other, his intestines all black. In other words, he died of gangrene because of worms, and this did not happen overnight, he was dead on his feet long before I adopted him. Hundreds of hundreds of horses in small holding pens, not being taken proper care of, then this is what happens. I cannot begin to describe the anguish I went through with him. To this day, I cry when thinking of it. BLM's reaction? "Well, that's just too bad. No, sorry, no refund, come pick up another horse if you want." Like I would EVER touch a BLM horse again? So, sorry, but I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT BLM.
That being said, the mustangs that survive BLM, and land in your care, are the lucky ones. I love what you do.
My question is: aren't mustangs dealing with encroachment from ranchers who are using public land to graze their cattle? Does that not contribute to the problem facing mustangs today?

I think that it proves that the horses doesnt have much to live on in the wild since alot of them are pretty skinny on pickup and gain weight fast in the care of the trainers. Imagine how they would look if they were free to breed without limits

I understand what you were saying at 4:00 I just feel like sometimes they keep mustangs for a couple years instead of releasing them. But i do really understand what you are saying I just feel like it's unnecessary to take ad many mustangs as they do like why cant they relocate them somewhere else if they are worried about them running out of food? horses are unfortunately not native to north america and are an invasive species, they have barely any predators in north america and they just should not have ever been allowed to become wild in the first place, theyre a completely domesticated species and the more of them we can remove from the wild and put into forever homes the absolute better. there are way too many of them and they reproduce too fast for the environment to keep up with, regardless of where they are. if we captured horses and just released them in different places wed literally worsen the problem, bc then we'd have the same problem happen in multiple locations at the same time, they dont just stop breeding
They’re an invasive species. There’s no room to relocate the horses, the area where they are allowed is already overrun, so the BLM is doing a good job with all the programs they have. If they were to not take as many as they do now, those would probably starve to death due to the lack of food, as well as taking in the amount they do isn’t bad. They have the proper space and care for them, so why is it a concern? I kind of get what you’re saying, but the BLM is doing what’s best for the horses well being, and although you may like the horses being free, they’re invasive as well as they’re starving and dying.
