Black and yellow make green! Who knew! Thank you so much for these classes. I am just starting to paint and I find it fascinating and something that brings me much happiness.
Great to hear it helped.
Will
Its called a tear-off palette , and is 50 sheets of disposable wax paper you can mix on, and then throw away.
Cheers,
Will
Okay, I am a bit late viewing this one. Eleven years, but it is incredible! I would never have thought to mix black and yellow to get the exceptional green I have been searching for. Amazing! Thank you, Will, for putting this together for all of us struggling to "get green right."
Good one Janice, so pleased it helped. Just working on a new course looking at mixing and balancing greens at the moment.
Will
Where was youtube when I was attending art school? :(
Thanks Calin, yes it can be hard to start with not to fall into the "I'm wasting too much paint trap" but especially with acrylics the more time available for the actual painting rather than the mixing the better.
Will
Wow didn't know that black and yellow and really make nice greens. This vid shows how new i am on painting. Thank you. Love the music backgrown btw ! :)
+DoughnutBuranasaksin Good one, hope it helps with your green mixes.
Cheers,
Will
I really appreciate your style of teaching. I have ADHD, so long winded chatter in tutorials makes me skip through. The limited, but perfect use of instruction really gets through to me, and it's more visual than anything. Plus the videos all being under 5 or 10 minutes is a plus. I'm learning a ton , woo! c:
Good to know Justa, so pleased you've been learning lots from the lessons.
Will
I would never have thought to try making green with burnt umber or black with yellow! As a beginner I have so much to learn. Thanks for the tutorials as I'm finding them very educational.
This video is super helpful i am painting a golden-tail sapphire hummingbird and i have misplaced my green so this video was extremely helpful i never thought to use brown or black thank you very much
MsGoldenheart27 ahh that's fantastic news, really pleased the video helped.
Will
"Acid Green" helps me remember the difference between aquamarine blue and pthalo blue. Great demonstration!
@dovespaniel Thanks very much, greens can cause a lot of problems when you are first beginning painting!
Will
Hey cynthia,
Your best bet would be the Winsor and Newton Artist Acrylic as they have been developed with a slight sheen added.
They also have a very minimal colour shift and are widely available.
I predominately use Golden and adjust the sheen in the varnish stage.
Hope this helps,
Will
I love that yellow paint! It's almost neon. I need to get some of that.
I love that Acid Green!!!
Hi Ubiquidade, you can use premixed green, but often they are very harsh and can make your paintings look amateurish, by mixing your own, subtle greens you'll look like a pro!
Cheers,
Will
Yellow and black?? I'd never thought this would give green. I got the exact green I was trying to find. Thanks!
Good one Flen, that yellow and black mix is a good one.
Cheers,
Will
Great video right to the point
Packed the knowledge
So professionally done
I will watch many more I am sure
Hi Sam, Mars Black is very close to carbon black and has a similar opacity.
Will
pleased you enjoyed it,
Will
@sukee501sue Hi Sue, The knife is a R.G.M Palette Knife no. 45
Hi Gaby, it depends what sort of yellow you are after, if you want a mustard yellow add a dash of purple. If you check out my video - complementary colours yellow and purple you can see how to tone a yellow down,
Thanks,
Will
Thank you I was looking for a neon green mix and the last colors are perfect!
Hi thisaccissecret, Thanks for the comment, pleased to hear you enjoyed the video,
Will
i really appreciate this video. im starting to paint miniatures and was worried i would have to shell out for 10x more green paints than all the other colour types i have, so this has saved me a bunch of money. lifesaver!
Glad I could help!
I am from PAKISTAN your video 👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌👍 is very helpful thanks
Glad it was helpful.
Good one, Greens are tricky!
Cheers,
Will
Hey Rosie, thanks for the comment, pleased you enjoyed the video. Phthalo Blue is very handy when trying to create a very bright turquoise.
Thanks,
Will
@DJSHADDY2K7 Thanks DJSHADDY, very kind of you to say so, pleased to hear your enjoying them, I've got lots more coming!
Will
Naples yellow is a lovely colour, and can make some lovely greens, great choice.
Hi Ardeshir,
Phthalo Blue (green shade) is also called Winsor Blue in Winsor and Newton paints but is usually just Phthalo blue (G/S).
Most if not all art stores will stock it and it has a very strong tinting strength , perfect for bright turquoise or bright, vivid green.
The palette in this example is a tear off palette, so it is dry when you put the paint on.
This was a great tutorial! I never realized the range of greens that could be mixed. You've taken the mystery out of paint mixing! Looking forward to learning more from you!
Hello from France, Will, and thank you sooo much for your help with colours. I'm a beginner, and I decided to do a birch forest, but could I get the greens I wanted???
I remembered watching one of your videos on acrylic mixing and just found it again.
Pheeew, I found exactly what I was looking for, a kind of slightly khaki shade, with the Carbon black and Cadmium Yellow Light...
So, it's back to the canvas with my grateful thanks.
I think you're a brilliant teacher, clear, concise, and your demonstrations speak for themselves. I particularly appreciate your putting in the video as subtitles the actual colours your use to mix.
With kind regards,
Anne
Thanks very much Anne, very kind of you to say so, glad you managed to mix the green you were after for your painting.
Cheers,
Will
I just love your work Will, and you make things a lot simpler and easy to understand from Wendy Baldwin Strathdale Australia
Hey teddyoggin,
Thanks for the sub, if you want to know more about which colours I recommend you buy as a beginner go to my website and click on the Acrylic tab and I have a basic acrylic palette post that should help.
Thanks
Will
I finished my ceramics project. (I had to paint it) It looks absolutley great thanks so so so much. I passed the class with a B. I take my first drawing class starting Tuesday. Can't wait :)
*Puts down huge glob* You only need a little!" In all seriousness though, im loving your videos. Informative and yet youthful with music choices. Nice break from feeling old watching other how to videos. You have just gained a subsctiber. c:
Probably when starting out, most of us vary the yellow far more than whatever we mix with it - so for dull greens, we might go for yellow ochre as opposed to Cadmium Yellow; but as you show here, there are many, many more variations possible. The only small caveat I would make is that it's a lot easier to dull down an over-bright green than it is to brighten one that's dull already.
Hi Monica, the black and yellow do make a lovely muted green.
Will
Hey spitharoo, you're welcome, black can be sooo useful in painting, enjoy mixing some lovely greens!
Will
this is so awesome!! Greetings from Chile!
Congratulations! You've earned my prestigious 'Useful Person of the Hour' award! You can pick up your prize at your local Pharmor Pharmacy.
Hi twweet9, Thanks for your kind comment, Hope it has helped in mixing that perfect blue for your ceramic class.
Will
The second to last mixture you performed with the Phthalo blue and Cadmium yellow got me excited, as I have been searching for a really nice sea foam green, thanks for sharing!
I like the black added to the yellow.
Never would have guessed that combination. Thanks for the video.
Pleased you found it informative Wil, yes that black and yellow mix can be really handy.
Cheers,
Will
Thanks TaikkusTacco
Will
and my teacher told me leave my black paint out lol
Well I can understand his motive because often people use black for the wrong purpose, but now I can certainly use it right. Thanks!
Good one, hope you find it helpful in your painting.
Will
thank you very much for this green tutorial I really needed it!!!
You're so welcome!
This helped me a lot. I was trying to make the right chartreuse and you showed me what I'd never have considered: the black. It's just what I needed, thank you!
Oh good one Julie, really pleased it helped.
Cheers,
Will
Thanks for the sub and glad you enjoy the videos!
Will
yes it's pretty bright!
Will
I Loved this video...it shows the diversity of color. I think my favorite greens are those made with various blacks.. I am primarily a painter in oils, so I use Ivory Black, Lamp Black, and I love those greens the most. Then I like the Burnt Umber greens...so warm and lovely. Could even show how to grey down the green a bit with it's complementary color.
mixing green can be tricky, hope the video helped.
Will
wow does are really nice colors
Thanks very much GogoGreece, the black and yellow is nice!
Cheers,
Will
Wonderful!
Thanks
yes, same rules apply with oil paints.
Cheers,
Will
Good one Bell, pleased it helped our colour mixing
Cheers,
Will
Thank you so much! I'm working on a door/mural for school and I couldn't seem to get my green right.

Thanks Deb, glad you like it.
Will
This is fun and just what I needed to bone up on my green skills!
i really need a mustard kind of yellow!
thanks though. :)
Thank you so much, used your informative video and came up with the exact green I needed to finish a piece of furniture.
Glad I could help!
Isnt the music by the good the bad and the ugly
It is!
Thanks Craig, pleased you found the video helpful.
Will
Just subscribed to your channel as I see there's more helpful stuff there. One question from a newbie about mixing, if you have time - if it's preferable to mix your own colours, why not just start with primary yellow, red and blue plus white and black? I get really confused with phthalo this and cadmium that! How do you learn what each colour can do, without having to buy loads of colours up front?
Hi Will, Quick Question - I have Matte Acrylics. I'm looking for an in between acrylic brand. Not shiny or slippery to paint with, but just enough sheen. I mostly work in oils, but learning a great deal working with this medium. Is Golden heavy body some what as I've described?
Thanks for your reply in advance. Say yes Will, give me a reason to run to the new Utrecht Art Store 3 blocks away...lol :D
May i know what name of the palette you're using please?
Its called a 'tear-off palette' you can get them in white or grey.
@@willkempartschool thank you :)
Thanks paintdiva,
Great to hear it's helped to take the mystery out of paint mixing!
Will
What is that palette you're using? It seems paint doesnt stick to it. Ive had problems using palettes. Esp the wood ones which usually absorb the paint. What would you recommend a best palette for paints? I hope you see this and be able to respond. From Philippines with love.xxx
Try Payne's grey instead of black. You get green anyway because of the blue in the Payne's grey. While this is useful, there is too much mixing. I do landscapes and florals, and can't do all that mixing every time I want a green. Good presentation, though.
I like the carbon black and yellow mixtures for more natural colors like you would see in landscapes, and the ultramarine and yellow mixtures for more vivid, but not the most vivid greens. Some of the outrageous greens I use uses the phtalo blue as a base. Phtalo green mixed with yellow makes for some really vivid greens. To each his own. Each mixture is applicable in different painting genres. Good video for those who aren't as adept at mixing colors! :)
Im after a vibrant green to cause a leaf pattern to pop on a molteld autumn background.. So far my leaves look so dull ..
So what im liking best here is the last row... 2nd in from the right.
( because im that newbie 😄)
Oh that's brilliant, well done on the B. Good luck with your drawing class,
Will
Thank you for this demo, phtalo blue is by far the least likeable.
Brown also, I noticed, gives beautiful colors for the sunset on the grass
Thank you for this. I've been struggling trying to get decent greens for months. Going to try it out now. :)
black and yellow make green? and burnt umber? great info i never liked the green from blue and yellow. it's very intense. i use ceruelan blue and naples yellow with ochre but it still tends toward blue.
that,s great.what is phthalo blue (green)?where can we get it or what is a similar color to it?
should the surface of palette be wet painted with a separate color or it is dry enough?
Cheers TheAzKate
My favourite shade of green is the Ultramarine Blue and Cadmium Yellow mixture. The reason why is the colour of the green that everyone can see when making green for painting grass and leafs in trees.
Thanks this is a great help to mix nice greens.
Good one Nerys, pleased it helped with your colour mixing.
Will
Thanks for share!
That Tip on making Green shades from those colours is just amazing from this I will go to your Web site to see if there are more great amazing Tips. Ned

"FOR ONCE I WAS BLIND, NOW I CAN SEE!" Bravo! It really makes it clear when put in such a simple way, but GD if that still doesn't make you giggle like.... well you know! BE well, Be real, and Be you!!!
Black and yellow makes green 🤯
ye
grrrrr then there's me who makes his green by squeezing it out of the green tube :/ good painters make me jealous sometimes
Really pleased it helped.
Cheers,
Will
So Burnt Umber and Cadmium Yellow makes some sort of a Brownish Green?
Hi Gia,
So glad the tutorials are being helpful. I'll keep them coming!
Will
Cool, thanks. I liked the first two for outdoor greens, with hilites from the 3rd =)
Willkemp your video are one of the most best video on you tube.Keep the video comeing but keep up the good work
I was trying to find a way to mix a Chartreuse. I think the black and yellow does it best.
I'll personally take your animated colorfully green painting instructions style suggestions from you for My Mural playgrounds wall 🖼 🎨work The Berenstain Bears, Mysteries of Alfred Hedgehog, Rupert Bear & his chums from Nutwood, Paw Patrol, & stuff like that beautiful style, sir.☺
Very nice video and valuable lesson....who could have thought black+ yellow to get a beautiful green...
good way to save money by making your own green, same for orange and purple.
subscribing now dude, i just started painting and would like to know what kind of tools i should get
