It is due to in ancient Times the place where practising bharathanatyam formerly known as Silamba Koodam and those days the nattuvanars had started the practices for the dancer's first adavus with holding a stick ..This practice was not followed now..Hope this helps..
Had great respect for Smt. PadmaSubramanyam until she exposed herself supporting varnashrama dharma validating it for modern times. I still can’t disrespect her as she’s a guru but utterly disgusted when teachers are so flawed in their principles… 😢 Shame!

This explanation makes sense and is very similar to what my best friend (happens to be a Brahmin) explained regarding the concept of who is considered a ‘true Brahmin’ … on the contrary Dr. PS’s explanation wasn’t nearly as sensible as what you are saying, instead her statements were like … Madhuvanthi, H Raja … you know what I mean that’s where I saw the red flag
