Why I don’t Like my 2023 Subaru Wrx | Cheap | Noisy | Over Priced

- Some reasons I don’t like my Subaru. There will be a follow up video on things I do like, so please don’t attack me thinking this is a one sided topic. I will have both sides covered.
A lot are knit picking, but are pretty relevant when you’re spending your hard earned dollars on something.
Gosh $40K. Got new 2023 Premium in March for $31K (incl destination and several installed accessories but not NC 3% tax). I agree it’s not quite a $40K car. I recall getting my 2013 Limited for $26K but that was 10 years ago! Went for Premium this time as I didn’t want sunroof and was planning my own speaker upgrades.
For 40k I’d stretch and get an R 😭
Paid 40k for my TLX Type S. Pretty happy with what the car offers for the price, low miles, good quality material
@@bosoxbandit no manual is a deal breaker. I bet the guy in this video wouldn't even look at a non-manual
@@a124as i hear you. I was the same way until I moved to socal and needed something that was easy for commuting and sitting in traffic. So the type s is a nice compromise. The hope is to get manual boxster s for a weekend car once the Acura is paid off
I think the way to go with the VBs is to just get the absolute base model. Anything more expensive than that is a hard sell.
@@ChrisJanes-n2b yeah, everything that I’ve done, I could of just done the base model and saved money. Only got the limited because all I’ve ever owned was new cars and trucks that where top trims and thought this would be comparable. Not sure what makes it a limited lol. LED headlamps? Even base models from other manufactures have those now lol 😂
I can say the only feature this car gave me that I didn’t get on my other cars is the headlamps that move, but I’d hardly say that’s worth an increase in price as I don’t even notice it lol
damn bro i bought mine new for the base at 28k out the door. At 40k i would have been much more disappointed.
@@jamesharless6103 yeah that’s where I’m at. Feel some type of way an about it thinking I was getting a comparable car to my other limited trim cars. Nope. Big let down.
Some fools need all of the options...
Appreciate your transparency! I just bought a premium for 32 and for me this is a insane upgrade. I'm coming from a 2015 Feista ST that had 117K miles. First subaru I've ever bought and I absolutely love it. I used to hate subarus, and for whatever reason this generation won me over. I personally don't have any problems with the vehicle considering the car i had. I appreciate the video and your insight. Anything I can learn about the car the better. Cheers! 🍻
It’s shocking to me that you paid that much. I was at the dealership last week and they were selling most of the WRXs 6-8k off MSRP and were doing 0% financing with 720+ credit and 1.9% for mediocre credit and that was before you negotiate them down.
@@dsmbilly3690 I paid $37.5k marked down from alittle over $40k Msrp.
Out the door total was around $41k on Black Friday last year.
base model is the way to go. I got it for $28k 1% financing. Its a steal at that price point.
I got a base ‘23 with the cvt last year for $29k and I think for that price it’s great but I can see where you’re coming from.
The golden age for these cars was in the 2000s. They were fast and affordable back then. They remain mostly unchanged 20 years later. The STI had a lot of upgrades like the Brembo brakes so that is where you got the most value for your money
@@Costa-rs9sz the blob eye is what made me like the wrx. Without that car, I never would have wanted a wrx. That was the best year imo
@@Subi_doo I’ve owned three WRX wagons ranging from 2002-2005. The STi I had was a 2017. Now I’m having fun with a 392 Challenger. A different kind of fun
I think the premium has the best seats. Right bolstering and comfy as hell. I have done a bunch of sounddeading (SoundSkins & Dynamat) has made a huge difference.
Besides the issues, I think the new wrx look great especially when lowered. Almost got one but I ended up with a used B9 Audi SQ5. Pretty happy with it
@@andrewthach1989 I like the new wrx look. Just the power and handling is its biggest flaws.
As a '24 base model and first time Subaru owner, it was interesting hearing this. There's a reason I went with a base, all trims have the same powertrain so for me I didn't see a reason to get anything more expensive. In my case the VB is my weekend car, I have no need for leather or any comfort features here. I completely relate to all your complaints, however I think it's important to know what this car is and what it was made for. It's not an Autobahn cruiser, and most of your complaints would be nonexistent if you bought a $90k German car. I can't help but ask, if you value comfort and interior quality so much, why you ended up going with a wrx?
@@kubap7398 bought the wrx because it was half the cost of the Audi I was going to order lol. Plus I was able to get the WRX in manual and the Audi wasn’t able to be ordered in manual. 😂 tried to save money by buying cheaper car and it backfired lol
@@Subi_doo Completely understand, unfortunate that Audi killed off their manuals here in the US. $90k is some serious firepower, you definitely have some good options. Maybe look into certified pre owned Audi's and get an extended warranty? Can save some cash there.
I purchased my STI for 30K - at 40K mileage it drives wonderful. I love every single moment of it :)
@@stevekim578 mines a love a hate. Some days I like it some days I don’t. The Wrx was a car I always wanted, I just bought it a generation too late. This will be my first and last Subaru. Not impressed with power, handling or quality of Subaru. Atleast I tried it.
@@Subi_doo Understand! WRX is Awesome! I've not drove newer Wrxs but !! welcome to the Subaru Family!
I got a 22' base for 28.5k, that's with the sti short shifter and shift knob. I can't see myself spending over 34k for this car.
Thanks for your honest review about the new WRX. I agree about the rattles in the newer models- very frustrating.. I've got a 2020 sti and I have very little to complain about, but it was very hard finding one unmodded with low miles and single owner. Had to pay a lot for an extended warranty, but the peace of mind is worth it. I also agree with you about the large screen, seems like a lot of wasted space, but all new cars seem to have these giant ipads in the dash.. I think if you took the extra money you would've spent on a bmw or audi, and put it into aftermarket mods on your VB, you would have something great.
@@rlast2845 it’s a bigger project car than I anticipated, but I will end up building something great 🙏
Hard agree with you on a lot of this. Recently was car shopping and bought a BRZ over the WRX for most of these reasons. Got a limited trim BRZ w/ a 6 speed for 33.5k out the door. Interior feels nicer, seats are bolstered better, shifter feels good, physical knobs and switches for climate controls, a decent screen that's a reasonable size and out of the way. Car has a lot going for it the new WRX doesn't, and is cheaper. Of course it's smaller, but on paper, man the BRZ is a killer
@@akina309 don’t forget, $4k and you can supercharge the brz and they are light but nuts with only 300hp 🤙I’m trying to find a good brz for drifting. The support for the brz chassis is crazy.
There is a sucker born every Minute.....
I would have made a deal on a $30K Base model, but some folks have to get all of the options... and pay the price.
@@thomasward00 I’m used to top level trims and wanted a comparable car. After owning it, I’ve since found out it’s not comparable. Not even close
If i want a fun awd car i would get a golf r, but if you want a true subaru, sti is the best choice
@@jaxxone4907 I wanted an STI but I don’t buy used cars so I was limited to what was on the market. My fun car had to be 4 door sedan so I can atleast take the kids when I go places. If I didn’t have these requirements, then Subaru never would have been a though as I could have gone 2 door c8.
How did you pay 40k? I got mine for 28,800$. I dont know that its worth 40k either, even with brembos and recaros. I threw in Carbotech 1521 pads and 29k later still works like a charm on 500/500+ setup.
@@ArizonaPoolBuilders it’s a new 2023 Limited…. It msrp was alittle over 40k but on Black Friday I got it for $37.5k and OTD all said and done it was $41k and change
Got my 23’ limited back in late August for $33,500.00 out the door. Mind you it was used with 8k miles, but also came with a FMIC, new intake, Enkie wheels, new paint matched fender flares, new grill, and new continental tires.
But yeah no way would’ve paid 40k
This guy I think first time wrx owner. Basically always get wrx base or premium. I know you feel like get robbed. Noise engine basically every gen wrx.
@@Kodazot I myself am a first time WRX owner and manual driver, so I get the logic on being first time, but even then you gotta study the market, price, what they are going for and so on. Just yesterday I secured a deal on a trail boss at 66k msrp and got it for 54k out the door.
Not surprised. Have owned multiple WRXs since 2002, and all these things you're complaining about, people have complained even 22 years before you when the 2002 WRX was introduced. I was there, owned GDs 02-07. Currently have a GR 08-14. The only thing has changed is price. It was 24k for a WRX, and 33k for an STI. The performance numbers are still the same as the old cars.
Subaru is always behind by a full decade on interior materials and amenities. Still true today.
@@ShengNotShane I’m glad I got to experience a Subaru. Met some really cool people and working on developing some parts. This will be my first and last Subaru unless they somehow magically get up to standard and start matching the trim lines across all the manufacturers.
My 2019 forester has a nickname. It's called the rattler
@@reyesarg is it a sunroof issue?
@@Subi_doo It's a lot of little things. Yes, the sunroof is one of them. Something in the back where the spare tire is. I took out the spare and everything in the area - it just rattles. The driver door window when not all the way up rattles over rough roads. The rear passenger door panel raddles. The glove compartment is empty and rattles. I bought this car new in 2019 and it's always been like that. I have done multiple alignments with precise hunter aligning tools. Taken my car to Subaru dealership to check for faulty or loose suspension parts. All parts are stock. The SOLUTION is - play my music up loud.
Got a 2023 for 2k under (32k) sticker and added the options that I wanted after the fact since Subaru actually has most of the wiring harnesses already in there and you just need to purchase parts after and install. Just got mine for snow, ice, and crazy rain days as my 2023 GT4 is my daily. Kind of curious as to why you complain about the plastic dash after you bought it. Trim levels between manufactures are not interchangeable so just a weird thing to compare naming conventions. Adaptive cruise control.... I mean, my vision is not the best but I can still tell when I am getting too close to someone and don't wait for them to move. I do agree that the seats suck and will be swapping those out with the new 2025 TS seats or something else. Only major issue I have with the car is the stock brakes as they definitely need to be upgraded. Installing the Super Shifter Stop from Perrin is also a must to get rid of the slop in the shifter. Enjoy what you bought, you paid for it. There are lots of ways to modify the car. Just save up for that one dream car that you want. Car is good for the money, enjoy it.
Trust me you don’t want adaptive cruise. I absolutely hate it and wish I could disable it.
@@coryhawkins967 I’ve never had a problem with it. All my cars have it. The ability to just cruise in traffic and not have to keep hitting the brakes and deactivating cruise control is nice. I’d never buy a HD truck without it. Makes those long drives easier.
@Subi_doo i like zooming up and going around people and the jamming on the brakes on me pisses me off. I mean overall it's a good idea.
Love my VB but this is FAIR ass argument lol gotta agree on most (limited ‘22)
@@T0YSOLDIERPRODUCTION thank you 🙏
Appreciate the honest review. Subaru would be better off keeping things simple and focusing on performance. They've never been great at building luxury and tech.
@@andyp8434 id agree with that, but I don’t think thats the case with the new wrx as performance is severely lacking. It’s got a really flat uneventful power band and I notice that the steering is alittle to light in high speed maneuvers. We should have all got the progressive rack like the GT that changes steering input the faster the car goes.
I love my VB WRX!!
If you paid 40K they saw you coming. Right now you can get a 2024 TR under 40K with some negotiation. For the price and easy to get and easy to MOD.
@@keaneu4456 I would still be getting a 2024 limited if I bought this year instead of last year. I don’t want a TR. No sunroof is a deal breaker
Paid 37.5k for a limited on Black Friday, out the doors around 41k.
@ I ment to say 2024. I like the limited and the extras you get. Limited is a great choice.
@@Subi_doo genuine question, why do you care for a sunroof? i have one and would rather have a solid roof because sunroof motors 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴
end up failing and its a huge pita to replace, also sunroof drains eventually clog and you end up getting water in your interior, not fun.
would you rather have a discounted TR (a lot of them going for 40-41K) or a base model?
@@karmahunden neither lol…. TR you can’t have a sunroof, and as much as I dislike the big screen in my car due to lack of features, I really don’t like the split display of the base model. However, 2024 base gets the big screen, but no sunroof. No win situation lol.
I’m not an A/C Person, hate the feel of fake cold air, I like windows down and a breeze, so no sunroof is a deal breaker for me.
If your inquiring which one to get, get the one you feel like your getting your moneys worth from. That’s the biggest suggestion I can offer. Hope that helps.
Not sure I follow. You say "would not accept", but you bought it ? ? ?
@@Ristogod based of off what I know now about the car after owning it. I wouldn’t pay this much for a car of this quality and drive again. This will be my last Subaru unfortunately.
Clutch problems seem like something to hate
What’s up with the tag still on the glove box? Is that a style thing?
@@tommybobommy21 I just never removed it lol… I don’t drive the car much
I have no complaints with my 23 premium. Love the seats. I've had no rattles or issues. The brakes aren't the best, but kind of expected for a stock car at this price point. I got mine for $1k under msrp and dealer didn't charge me for sti short shifter and sti shift knob. If you think the WRX interior is cheap go look at a GR Corolla.
@@brian6speed I’m not familiar with the Corolla, but my wife’s limited Highlander has really nice interior with soft touch everywhere, worlds better than the WRX of the same trim level. I’ve got a first world problem lol…. I’ve only ever owned the top trim of every vehicle I’ve bought new and this one is the cheapest build quality and parts out of all of them. I’ve seen lower trimmed Hondas with better interior lol
@@Subi_doo im trying to figure out why you bought the car ($40K) if it looked so cheaply made? you could have spent the 40k on a genesis g70 2.0T... check them out. i have the genesis 3.3t thing is a beast. rwd and AWD options.
Did you not test drive this or what?
@@louisthibault555 for all of 5 minutes in the city.
Wtf is that shifter?
@@theredsalmon612 it’s a wisefab extension lol. I like tall shifters that place the knob at an ergonomically correct position to the driver. No longer have to reach, it’s right in front and takes less time banging through gears.
Bro, those matte black fenders flares were the hidden extra $8,000. But at least they added some downforce...hopefully.🤔
@@toulee8051 They’re to reduce surface drag to increase fuel economy. The new WRX is an economy sedan with a sporty look. Ow20 to top off the economy car claim lol
"i updated the interior"
"the interior rattles"
Hm, and you didn't put two and two together eh.
I paid 30k for a 24 santa cruz, which I'd much rather have than this thing. Good luck on the next one
@@Nathdood I changed the dash trim… there’s absolutely no way you can do that and create or make a rattle. It’s not even rattling in the same spot. Dash trim is on front of dash. Rattle is at rear. The alcantara trim is just a cover that’s clipped on. Dash rattles up by the windshield. Roof rattles around the front of the headliner and the sides by the doors. There was no 2 and 2 to put together.
unfortunate man. sell it and move on. It is what it is at this point. get out of the loan. best of luck.
@@rubberlessg241 so as much as I don’t like the way the Subaru was packaged, I have decided to keep the car for parts development and to turn it into a RWD drift car. While it won’t be used as a drift car, the point of the build is to make it a fully functioning drift car to showcase my products. Maybe later down the road if I’m feeling invincible, I will take this car out and drift it. I’m doing a separate build for seat time
my 05 legacy gt is better built
you paid 40k USD? Yeah, you got robbed, they can be found for $29k CAD in canada.
@@Pato-sp2pr paid 37.5 for the car. Msrp was alittle over 40k, out the door total was around 41k
I mean you bought a wrx, which used to cost brand new msrp 27k in 2021... and a brand new STI was 36k.... then subaru canceled the STI and then decided to sell the wrx a 27k car for STI prices in 2022 so they can still make profit....
Please be patient while 1080P loads.
Sounds like you should’ve gotten a VA chassis 😂
@@LapisBlueWRX man I really wish they still made the 2021 for sure… the way that car hits boost is so much better feeling and exciting than the current model. I’d never buy a car used so I was really limited on what I could get. If I had to do it over again, I’d of just got the Audi and not compromise to save money.
@ I feel ya. This is my first subie and I definitely bought my 2020 new back in October 2019. 65k miles later I still love it…..I’d maybe trade for a new FL5 😅😅
im not sure why people get a limited on a wrx. was always supposed to be bought in its base model. 30k is cheap compared to 30k for a civic si lol
@@yourmanzach2307 I bought a limited because it was the highest trim level I could get. I’m used to top tier trims on all my new cars and wanted a comparable car.
You forgot ugly in the title, lol.. Looks better in darker colors.. like the goofy gen2 (genpu) Mazdaspeed 3 that had taht simpleton grille lol
@@dre32pitt ohh no, I really like the look of the new wrx ahahah…. Give it a better motor with more power and I’d be content. There so much room in that engine bay for a better motor lol
