This portrait of an old man is painted in oil on canvas. The original is from Jan Lievens (1607-1674), painted arround 1630 on wood and it is in the collection of the Lakenhal - Museum in Leiden, Netherlands. He was a contemporary of Rembrandt. They worked together and shared a workshop for some years.
The size of this copy is 50x60 cm (20x24 in) and it is painted with the pigments of this time.

Rembrandt applied multiple glazes on most of his portraits including one to two glazes of black over the entire painting. This black glaze creates a deep unity and allows the background and foreground edges to merge into each other much better. After that he’d apply heavy impasto highlights. Great channel btw. I too LOVE to paint master studies/copies. It’s my favorite✊🏻

Hey, eine großartige Arbeit, vielen dank fürs Teilen!! Malst du eigentlich alla prima oder hälst du die Zwischentrocknungsphase ein?
Eigentlich male ich nur in Schichten, hier waren es etwa 4-5 gewesen, und lasse sie dann trocknen, bevor ich die nächste drübermale. Alla Prima ist mal gut für ´ne schnelle Ölskizze aber kommt halt in Sachen Leuchtkraft nicht an die Schichtmalerei heran. Außerdem liegt mir die Schichtmalerei auch besser.

I tried to paint it without big changes. In January I visited the original in Lakenhal, Leiden - there are really no lightpoints in the eyes.

You show and say nothing at all about the preliminary drawing. It's all of a sudden and all magic just there. Bummer
