Aunque en Cuba no hubiera habido una revolución politica y social, ya en Nueva York los boricuas venian creando una revolución musical. Ellos estaban jugando con los ritmos como niños creativos que querian crear su propio sonido, y así fué. Para el 1965-70 habian 1,429,000 boricuas en Nueva York y no más de 30,000 cubanos una proporción de más de 40 por cada 1 (uno). Los boricuas parecian como hongos que estaban en todas partes, eran como algo que crecia de la tierra y brotaban solos, fueron entonces ellos, los responsables más que nadie de este nuevo sonido y estilo emergente, viniendo a ser, los protagonistas y creadores de LA SALSA. Solo habia una orquesta en Nueva York "alegadamente" cubana y era la de Frank (Machito)" Grillo y sus Afrocubans Boys, los que resultaban ser en más de un 60% boricuas. Machito por su lado, habia nacido en Tampa Florida, viviendo en el Barrio puertorriqueño de Nueva York, con su esposa la boricua Hilda Torres. Machito fue llevado a Cuba de niño por sus padres y cuando regresó ya de adulto para finales de los años 30's, se inicio como cantante con la orquesta del puertorriqueño Noro Morales. La verdad es que desapareciendo Cuba y los Cubanos para los años 1960's, en adelante, como opción musical, como una explosión, comienzan los Boricuas a hacer en Nueva York una mezcla de ritmos variados, y es así como surge lo que es conocido como Salsa hoy dia. La Salsa no es Música típicamente Boricua, ni tampoco es totalmente Cubana, ni Norteamericana, es una mescla mestiza, una explosion de mesclas musicales Cubana, Puerto Riquenas y Norte Americanas mescladas y creadas por músicos Puertorriqueños en Nueva York. Al hablar de la música Salsa, lo importante es su momento de nacimiento y quienes fueron sus creadores inmediatos, irnos a buscar los origenes, inevitablemente nos va a llevar al África y a España. Cuando los cubanos hablan del Guaguancó, Rumba o Son, no se refieren a Haiti como lugar inmediato del origen Son, parten de la premisa de que fueron ellos los que modificaron dichos ritmos rústicos por unos más musicales, no se refieren nunca a los origenes Haitianos ni Espanoles. La primera vez que se utiliza la palabra Salsa para referirse a un nuevo genero musical que no caía en una categoría o ritmo particular, se uso en Venezuela en 1966 para referirse a la música de los puertorriqueños Ricihe Ray y Bobby Cruz, como una indefinible. Por lo que su origen para referirse a un estilo de música o sonido nuevo fue mucho antes que el lanzado por la Fania para 1975, aunque internacionalizado posteriormente por ellos. Origen de la palabra Salsa como genero musical En una visita reciente a la ciudad de Medellín Colombia, Bobby Cruz el popular cantante boricua les concedió la siguiente charla a Edwin Osorio y Juan Carlos Ángel, director de El Sonero de Barrio de la cual tomamos estos extractos. ¿Maestro, hay muchos rumores que de dónde viene la palabra salsa, para usted de donde proviene? Hay que distinguir entre la palabra salsa como ingrediente de comida y la música que se llama salsa. Siempre existió música afrocubana básicamente esta tenia unos ritmos muy definidos. Sin embargo la palabra que es la que define el termino musical que se conoceria como "Salsa" nace básicamente alrededor de Richie Ray y yo, y no porque nosotros lo hayamos pensado asi. Estábamos siendo entrevistados por el señor Phidias Danilo Escalona que le decían el Loco Phidias en Caracas Venezuela, Phidias en la radio mientras nos entrevistaba dijo: “mira a mí me dicen el Loco, pero la música que ustedes tocan esta mas loca que yo, ya que eso no es Mambo no es Chachacha á no es Guaracha ni Guaguanco ni tampoco Pachanga que es esa jerga que ustedes tocan” y Richie en broma le dijo “eso es como un Keetchup” y Phidias le dice: “yo no estornude” ¿que quieres decir con Keetchup? Y Richie le dice “Keetchup es la salsa que se le echa a las hamburguesas para que cojan sabor” entonces Phidias le dijo: “ ahhh... pues ya lo oyeron amigos radio escuchas” la música de Richie Ray y Bobby Cruz; “se llama SALSA” (pegando un grito de jubilo y sorpresa) La razón de su grito al aire, es la emoción que le causo al tener un programa radial que era promovido por la empresa Pampero, productores de distintos tipos de Salsa en Venezuela, y a la coincidencia de que su programa se llamara "La hora de la Salsa" la emoción que creo esa sinergía en Phidias, fue más que evidente. Hoy día Phidias, es conocido en Venezuela como "El padre de la Salsa" sin embargo dicho termino es incorrecto, Phidias seria mas bien "El Padrino de la Salsa" ya que fue quien la bautizó, porque ya la criatura tenia a sus padres en los músicos Puerto Riquenos de Nueva York y Puerto Rico.

A Musical gift...No one can be compare to any other one, every musician has an style and a language to express their own musical and personal statements. Any negative comment is because they probably don't know Giovanni's career, btw. He has recorded in hundreds CD's with the greater musicians of this era and all over the world and his styles is very recognizable, but we need to follow and listen to so many of his recordings and performances to be able to evaluate him...Other wise any comment without any knowledge about this genius is in vain...mainly because they don't understand what he is playing, yes he can play like any other conga players in this world. If you just don’t understand. This is music. This is the free exploring of the musician’s mind over melodies based on permutations with a rhythmic and melodic ostinato. It’s highly technical, musical, but mostly it is the interpretation of the musician of the universe. Of course nobody is going to be able to fully understand, because this are personal explorations, prepared by the musician to bring for us to watch and listen. He takes you through themes and jungles, and mountains, then back to the heart, all in one piece. It takes you through different rhythmic movements from Cuba and Puerto Rico. You follow for one minute then try to see if you can catch again the path of the musicians mind, heart, and beats. You only hear the strokes the musician use to paint a big picture right in front of your eyes. Or do you think somebody just grabs an instrument and starts scratching with it and comes up with a work like this. Give it a try. Grab your drum, go outside, bring a recording divise for evidence, and just go at it using the madman method you think Giovanni is using here, then go back home, play what you recorded and you will see the kind of unbearable shit that comes out of your speakers. What Giovanni is doing here is a master piece, not a scratching performance. If you don’t understand it, have the humility to say: ‘a master, your wisdom is incomprehensible, but I pay attention’. Otherwise, go tell every jazz musician what they do is shit cause you don’t get it. Or lock yourself up in your church of tunes you can understand and follow
We (percussionists) do appreciate your comments and the respectful way you express them BUT... Giovanni is showing here combinations and “elevation” of conga rudiments that only a Master Conguero will appreciate and/or understand. The rhythms you are inspecting to see/hear are but only basic elements of this instrument and he is brought to this shows to play in a higher level. It’s like Jazz music - not everybody understand it nor appreciates it.
This makes me want to get a conga. I know they’re expensive but i don’t care! It would help me with getting rid of that powerful urge to stim and fidget (i’m autistic). Plus, it would mean i would have something else to add to my small collection of percussion instruments.

What Eric Clapton is to the guitar, Giovanni Hidalgo is to the conga; though sometimes when I'm fumbling around trying to find my glasses when I first awake, I might sound like that a little bit and briefly.
Couple of months ago, at a musicians (mainly salsa guys,) get together in Puerto Rico I heard that Giovanni has some health issues with diabetes that affected his hands fingers. Hopefully, these are only rumors and God keeps blessing him with good health.

These solo performances are a waste of energy and time. The drums get pounded without any rhythm and meaning. Only at 2:12 and 3:03 does Hidalgo attempt to really play something that is worthwhile. The rest is just noise meant to please people who have a poor understanding of drumming.

+nc461 Dude, I come from a family of ancient African drummers. Those drums that Giovanni is playing are called mitumba. My people have played these drum for thousands of years, and doing so for special religious occasions. Drumming is meant to summon the souls of the ancestors so that they can commune with the living during the festivals. You do not summon the ancestors by abusing drums in that fashion you chaps call solos, trust me. For you drumming may be entertainment, the way it was introduced to your culture, but that sheer goal of entertainment is not the reason the people at the source of those drums came up with drumming. It is an African thing you cannot understand.
+Scotty B, have you ever attended a religious ceremony for which the drums Giovanni is playing were introduced? If you have not, and it does not look like you have, please do so and you will see the kind of drumming I am talking about not the commercialized stuff like what Giovanni is playing in that clip. Once you do that, you will fully understand the reason the solo performances are nothing but meaningless Vaudevillian showmanship completely bereft of the spirituality associated with drumming.

These solo performances are a waste of energy and time. The drums get pounded without any rhythm and meaning. Only at 2:12 and 3:03 does Hidalgo attempt to really play something that is worthwhile. The rest is just noise meant to please people who have a poor understanding of drumming.

+nc461 Dude, I come from a family of ancient African drummers. Those drums that Giovanni is playing are called mitumba. My people have played these drum for thousands of years, and doing so for special religious occasions. Drumming is meant to summon the souls of the ancestors so that they can commune with the living during the festivals. You do not summon the ancestors by abusing drums in that fashion you chaps call solos, trust me. For you drumming may be entertainment, the way it was introduced to your culture, but that sheer goal of entertainment is not the reason the people at the source of those drums came up with drumming. It is an African thing you cannot understand.
+Scotty B, have you ever attended a religious ceremony for which the drums Giovanni is playing were introduced? If you have not, and it does not look like you have, please do so and you will see the kind of drumming I am talking about not the commercialized stuff like what Giovanni is playing in that clip. Once you do that, you will fully understand the reason the solo performances are nothing but meaningless Vaudevillian showmanship completely bereft of the spirituality associated with drumming.
