    Pat is correct. Official product was called the Broadband Adapter which uses an 8P8C connector for Ethernet. Dreamcast shipped with a 56K modem which uses an RJ-11 jack. Connecting to a game of Phantasy Star Online or Quake III Arena etc was slow, but once you were in the game that 56K moden held its own very well.

    I've heard people say I shouldn't blow in my cartridges or wrap the cord around the controller. I've been doing both of these things since the 80's not one of my games or controllers, to this day, have been broken because of that. I have to open my controllers and clean them but that's the only maintenance I've ever had to do on a controller and none of my games have stopped working or became glitchy.
    I just must be REALLY good at doing it the "wrong" way, lol.

    • @lupolinar
      @lupolinar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, blowing on you cartridges is mor a problem for your console, mainly the NES, as the connector could get rusty and then hardly any game could played without opening it up and clean/repair it.

      Again, I must be VERY good at doing it the "wrong" way. BTW my Genesis and SNES are still working too, along with the controllers and cartridges that got the same treatment as the NES. What a coincidence.

    There's a Raspberry Pi distro called DreamPi that lets you play Dreamcast games including Phantasy Star online still. You hook a 56k USB modem up to the Pi and can use the LAN/wifi to connect to your network and then communicate between the PI and the Dreamcast with the modem.

    • @DamienCooley
      @DamienCooley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, and it is actually a better option than the Broadband adapter because not all Dreamcast multiplayer games support the broadband adapter, but all of them support the modem. I actually have my Broadband adapter from when I first purchased it back when it was new but I use my modem and DreamPi instead because it has better compatibility with the games.

    Dreamcast broadband adaptors are not region-specific. Japanese adaptors will work fine on US consoles. Ethernet is broadband. Early systems had dial-up modems, but the Dreamcast ethernet adaptor is, in fact, one and the same as a DC broadband adaptor.

  • @Sixfortyfive
    @Sixfortyfive 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I think the biggest reason why nobody's chomping at the bit for an aftermarket Dreamcast BBA is because it's actually not as functional as the stock 56K modem in modern settings. Not very many games were made to be compatible with the ethernet adapter, and the modem-compatible games can largely still be played today via VoIP.

    For wrapping the cord, I just wrap it around the controller, but I leave a loop of extra cable near he controller to not stress the connection. And this way, there's no tight bends where the cable is doubling over itself. It doesn't look as tidy, but I've never had a single controller fail since I've started doing it this way.

    • @simpleanswer8954
      @simpleanswer8954 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bitcheslovecannons5769 It's the other way around. SNES is an acronym, so it's totally acceptable to say it like a word. The weird change to a Z sound is mostly a UK thing, so "snez" is definitely a dialect difference. Mario is a proper name, and dialect doesn't apply to proper names. It's "Mahreo" no matter what. Saying "marry-o" is a mispronunciation.

    • @richardtheconquerer

      @simpleanswer8954 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@richardtheconquerer I don't give a shit what language you speak, there's only one way to pronounce a proper name. If person is from New Jersey and says it's pronounced "marry-o" then that's the way it's said. If they said it's "Mah-reo" then that's the way it is. Dialect does not apply to proper nouns. Names aren't pronounced differently in different languages. If it's fictional it might be localized to be easier for a different dialect, but that's literally a different name used for a different region. A person named Jose is still "hose-A" no matter where in the world you take them. There is literally no instance where it would be correct to call them "Josie", or "Joe-say" or anything else, because that aint their name. Proper nouns. Learn about 'em.

    I wrap cords using a modified version of the over-under method. It keeps the cord from twisting and losing it's structure inside the outer sheath and prevents wear and breaking of the wires inside the cord. Plus you can just throw the cord out and it unwraps naturally instead of tangling.
    Basically ask a stage audio engineer (or whatever they're called). They'll tell you how to do it right. I think I got my method from watching a TH-cam video a long time ago after seeing them doing it on stage once at a concert and wondering why they do it that way.

    I talked to an electrical engineer, and he said nearly everyone ties cables way to tight and incorrectly. They should be more loose following the natural "bend" and flex the copper/wires do on their own, so I tie them very loosely in a figure 8 then wrap a velcro tie around the center instead of using the cord for it. The loops of the "8" need to be longer and loose so it's not cinching the cable or wearing out the rubber coatings.

    I have wrapped 10000 cords and its always with a fat elastic. Flat cords ("d" and "double round" Ac cords for instance) are squeezed between the thumb and forefinger to eliminate any twists and a fat elastic, nearly identical to a factory wrap. Having had a thousand fat elastics deteriorate and break after 10 years, I'm starting to think about switching to a twist tie. I have only seen the "Luna wrap" a few times and it would have simplified merchandizing 20 years ago before I got custom sombrero cut header cards and clear poly bags. I think I'm going to have to try it out, I say I'm not too old to try new things
