- etrian odyssey has always been a funky little series. but despite all the recent attention it's been getting, most people tend to gloss over V and Nexus, the series' most recent original entries. come ody-see why i think that should be a federal crime! video contains minor spoilers for both games.

I also love how you mention the fifth stratum in 5, dude when I first got that game from gamestpp for 30 dollars after enjoying the demo out of pure curiosity I reallly found gold. People just don't understand how amazing these games are, the lack of concentrated story and more focused gameplay is one of the biggest things I love. Even when I hear snippets of the story I reapy enjoy the small bits and pieces and the stratums themselves are just..... AMAAZING.
You really did this game justice which is what I feel people don't understand!
Lore wise, we are missing two games to end the story 😢

what did you think of the ephemeral bridge?
it's pretty funky! even more of an unexpected twist than untamed garden, plus the huge tonal shift in both the map and battle themes (along with the weird enemies themselves) really hammer home the otherworldliness of what you're dealing with.
as you could probably tell by the footage, though, it kinda sucks to get through and i struggled a lot with it. teleporter mazes are pretty stupid most of the time.

Plus dungeon 6 is where the game is actively trying to break every party comp.

My favourite games in the Odyssey series, right after the Super Mario one.
Etrian Odyssey 3 was my first game and I remember spending all day just thinking about the characters I had chosen and what had brought them together to the labyrinth in the first place. I set up a huge backstory for all of them and how they had become friends on the way to Armoroad and decided to form a team together. I fell in love with the game and that party and eventually got every game in the series and love them all. Now I need to go replay V and Nexus, its been too long.
Ngl I started playing EO3 HD a few weeks ago as my first Etrian Odyssey game and now I'm regretting not having played the 3DS ones when I had the chance. I kept eyeballing them and never buying.

I remember trying the demo for EOU on a whim on the 3DS Eshop like a decade ago. I was bored and wasn't expecting much. Don't think I ever bought a game quicker. The earlier games are definitely a little basic in terms of party composition, but EO5 and EON just go so insanely hard it's nuts. Not many people often talk about the math of JRPGs, but I also love how they rebalanced stats in EO5 (with the introduction of stats like Wisdom) to just make the overall combat experience even more polished.

EO is a wonderful but under-appreciated series. I really hope we get another two screen system or a peripheral just to play more games in this series the way it was meant to be.
I was looking for a good dungeon-crawler game where I can CUSTOMIZE characters and just have fun. You sold me on Nexus. 19 class options is insane and I can change the color palettes AND assign voices?!
EOV is my favorite in the series. Nexus is good too, but I feel like the class and stratum selection is a bit lackluster (too many melee classes and forest strata).
the strata selection is the one thing i forgot to mention. having almost all the strata being the same shrine or starting forest areas is a bit weird tbh

Great video. Trying your team and it feels so underpowered though
it def takes a while for it to get going depending on what skills you're focusing on at the start, especially since there's a lot of passive healing involved (assuming you're talking about nexus). plus EO games are always pretty slow at the start
