How convenient and wonderful.. I just watched the three films of Kaneto Shindo on the Criterion Channel and then I see you have this uploaded only a few days ago.. Hard to process them all after watching all three back to back but I think Onibaba might be my favorite, some really haunting visuals that have stuck with me now days after watching. Happy to see you uploaded this video Daisuke :)

Hello Diasuke Beppu, my name is Ryan Lee and I live in Australia. I have recently found and subscribed to your channel and have been binge watching lots of your videos. I really appreciate your very calm and thoughtful descriptions of the movies you talk about.
I thought I’d share with you the movies I have purchased from the Barnes and Noble criterion 50% off online sale. I have been watching lots of Japanese movies for the first time lately (such as Ran 1985, Funeral Parade of Roses 1969, Harakiri 1962 and Himiko 1974), so I decided to order House 1977 (which I have already watched and loved) from B&N as well as Kuroneko 1968, based on your recommendation in this video. I watched a trailer for Kuroneko 1968 and am very intrigued and I can’t wait to see it.
In 2018 I watched Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant 1972 for the first time when it was screened at MIFF2018 (Melbourne International Film Festival) as part of a retrospective about Fashion in films. I absolutely fell in love with that film and Rainer Werner Fassbinder and have been rewatching it many times since. Because of this, I decided to buy The BRD Trilogy Boxset from B&N as well as the Berlin Alexanderplatz Boxset. I haven’t seen these movies and am eagerly awaiting their arrival.
What are your thoughts on these movies? Thank you for the very high-quality videos and I look forward to watching more videos from you in the future.
    Kind Regards,
    Ryan Lee.

Dear Ryan Lee, thank you so much for your very kind comment! This is so nice of you to say, and welcome. I hope you enjoy the videos, and please feel free to comment, provide recommendations, make suggestions or criticisms, agree and disagree, and like or dislike, or whatever you feel you would like to do. It is my pleasure to be able to speak with you.
I am a great admirer of the works of Fassbiner. I haven't yet picked up the BRD blu ray set, but I have it on DVD and the set's films are masterful. I am also a big admirer of The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (and I cannot get that song out of my head!!!). It has been one of my dreams one day to do a video series on Berlin Alexanderplatz, say, one video per episode. Maybe I can do it one day.
Let me say also that I love those Japanese films you mentioned. I absolutely adore them. In particular, the film HIMIKO!! This is amazing. This is an ATG film, and I love ATG films!
Thank you so much, and I look forward to talking to you again very soon. Have a lovely weekend.

Great video 👌 I have checked and all three are available currently on the Criterion Channel to stream as are both the Benicio Del Toro doc and the Kenji Mizoguchi doc you recommend.
Masters of Cinema also released all three films from this video but it looks like Onibaba has just gone out of print but should still be available second hand.

I swear, you make every single film you talk about sound amazing! Kuroneko is one I’ve had my eye on for a while, but somehow it always gets bumped in favor of some other release I want come 50% off sale time. You’ve sold me on it now and I’ll probably try to finally pick it up in November. I wasn’t aware of Onibaba, but that one sounds very interesting too!

    • @DaisukeBeppu

Oh yes, these films are very unique and stylized and intense. I think you might find them very intriguing (unless intense horror or scary films are not things that you like to watch, and if that is the case, then I would not recommend these films. But if those kinds of films are OK, then I strongly recommend them!).

Thanks for highlighting Shindo's work. I have both Kuroneko and Naked Island and patiently waiting for that Onibaba upgrade, which I enjoyed it a bit more than Kuroneko.
That Benicio del Toro clip is one of my fav supplements in the collection because I found it so delightfully random. I loved listening to someone I would have never suspected to describe the same appreciation for the film and director as I have. I'm determined that if I ever get to meet Benicio in person, I would begin my greeting by sharing how I loved him in Usual Suspects and then quickly jump right into discussing the Naked Island with him.
And thanks for sharing Shindo's supplement on Mizoguchi in that Ugetsu release. I forgot that it was there and hope to get to it sooner rather than later. Looking forward to that your next director highlight!

Hi Daisuke, hope all is well. Great video and recommendations on Kaneto Shindo's films! I have picked up many movies this latest Barnes and Noble Criterion Sale. I purchased the following: Blue Velvet, Blow Out (De Palma), Cassavetes 5 Films Box Set, Agnes Varda Eclipse set (my first ever Eclipse set), Seven Samurai, Jeanne Dielman (Chantal Akerman), 4 Michelangelo Antonioni Films (L'Avventura, La Notte, L'Eclisse, Red Desert), Swing Time, 2 Ozu films (Good Morning, Tokyo Story), A Face In The Crowd, Certain Women (Kelly Reichardt), Notorious, and Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters. I am hoping that this will not be the last Barnes and Noble Criterion Collection movie sale but I think that the fate of this retail store is up in the air right now in the United States so I wanted to use this opportunity to add to my collection.

    A Room With A View.
    Picnic At Hanging Rock.
    Rebecca.
    Notorious.
I'm picking up the flavor green tea over rice next month I can't wait till the next sale to purchase that title.

Daisuke Beppu I look forward to seeing it. I fell in love with the remains of the day fairly recently I didn't think I'd enjoy it but it blew me away. I also liked Howard's end but it's not quite as good as remains of the day for me. I've also been looking at the merchant ivory DVD set you talked about on one of your previous videos. Might pull the plug depending on my finances.

Hello Michael, and thank you so much for your comment. I share your enthusiasm for the films of Shindo. There are so many films that he made that have not been released on DVD/blu outside of Japan. He is such a fascinating filmmaker with an eclectic and rich filmography. I agree with you 100%! I hope you are well and, by the way, what is your favorite Shindo film? Are you a fan of Japanese cinema as well?

Thanks for the reply. It's difficult to say which Shindo film is my favorite. Onibaba (hope I spelled that correctly) was my first discovery. The Naked Island fills the screen with visual poetry. It's a tough call. And yes I'm very fond of Japanese cinema. Kwaidan and The Human Condition are two of my favorites.

I am very interested in the works of Kaneto Shindo and on many ocassions i have nearly purchased Onibaba. I have heard great things about his films. As for Mizoguchi i like the films i have seen from him including Ugetsu, but love The story of the last Chrysanthemum in particular, it blew me away. I still haven't seen Sansho the bailiff yet.

I notice the way you pronounce the titles and director names that you pronounce it in an American way. Is that purposeful for the viewers, or are you American and is that just the way you pronounce them naturally? I'm American (half Japanese), and I think you probably speak English better than I do. ^^ Great video by the way.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello my friend! Thank you for your comment and you make such a great observation about my speech pattern! Well done. So I think what happens is that when I speak in Japanese I’ll tend to pronounce names (including my own) in the Japanese language accents. But when I speak in English, I unintentionally use the English way of pronouncing a name (including my own). So I’ll say for example a-KIR-a KU-ro-SA-wa.
By the way, if you like, you can also leave comments here in Japanese and I’ll be happy to reply back in Japanese 😃👍

In Japan, this December, together with the release of the new film in theaters, there will be a HUGE BLU RAY BOX SET that will go on sale in December, of all the Tora-san films for the first time on blu ray. Hello, my dear friend, and once again thank you for another wondrous episode. If I could take some time to mention the four to five films that I have on my list for this year to buy at the Criterion sale. Since I have a budget that I have set for every year for buying movies and going to movies every year. My plan for every year is to buy 1 movie each month and four or five criterions every year depending on the cost and whether it is a box set or not. I also try to see at least 1 movie at the theaters every month depending on whether I find anything that appeases me. The city I live in (Portland,Oregon) is pretty good for getting smaller budget movies out on the big screen but it is not the best. I have been collecting movies since 199. First on VHS, then on DVD and now on Bluray. I remember the first Foreign films I have ever seen in the Theaters were "The Three Colours Trilogy" by the great Krzysztof Kieslowski, and without saying I was awestruck. Anyway, let me get back on point, the movies I plan on getting this year are 1) The Virgin Spring 2)Elevator to the Gallows 3) The Lure 4) Red Balloon and finally based on your recommendation 5) A Brighter Summer Day. I rarely blind buy a film unless I hear amazing things about it from six or seven of my film friends, of which most of them had heard of it and had said glowing things about it, as you have. Thank You for your time and patience and have an amazing day.
