Chandler isn’t wrong. A wedding is essentially just a big party. All of the money for a wedding goes mainly to the venue, catering, services, decorators.

Monica thought that she had a wedding fund that her parents had been saving since she was a child. Her parents bought a summer beach house. And if you weigh up one thing you can understand why shes so upset and determined to have a big wedding - Ross got married twice and I think for the second wedding his parents paid towards it. And therefore they may have paid for the first as well. So imagine being the DAUGHTER - one who has been ignored most of her life as well - and knowing your parents paid for one or both of your brothers weddings but then spent your entire wedding fund on a beach house and now you can't get the wedding you've been planning since you were a kid.
Still ridiculous to want to spend that much money on a wedding but very sad for her at the same time that the favoritism was so severe in her family that her own parents couldn't pay for her wedding. Oh well at least she finally got a porsche from her dad in the end.

This is not the same monica which was in season 1 or 2 or 3 or 4. At that time all of them acted genuinely and the show seemed natural and made us happy because of the bond of friendship between them. The real Monica was about hard work, principles and also mature.
As the seasons progressed the acts became dumber and dumber and it was clearly visible that some characters were over acting to forcefully make us laugh and this includes joey and monica a lot. The only one whose acting and lines were same throughout was Ross. If you see the later seasons and analyze..then only the parts where Ross is actually seemed funny.
The Main speciality of Joey was that he was really an innocent guy with a pure heart and because of his innocence he would say something which turned out funny or childish and lovable . And that is why Joey was my fav initially. Later they completely destroyed that character making him a dumb joker with wannabe playboy skills. There is a different between being childish and innocent and being a Joker
Same for Chandler..Chandler's character meant Sarcasm with puns and real sense of humour and very good education as at that time working with data analysis in IT was a very huge deal....but as the seasons eclvolved...Being Sarcastic, Funny n witty meant one thing and being a wife dominated laughing stock becomes completely another thing.

@@omanicc9854 Knowing her character, it makes no sense to me either, especially since her apartment was inherited; I assume it's completely paid off since she got it from her grandmother iirc, but maybe that's incorrect. I had always assumed she just wanted a roommate so she wouldn't be too lonely in a city. I think we just have to assume that even as a moderately successful chef in NYC, she still doesn't make enough to have a strong savings account. Doing to a quick google search, it appears that chefs in NYC currently make anywhere from $45-81K per year. The average michelin star chef makes around $85K but could make $120K if they're extremely successful. I'm gonna assume that Monica would make about $60K in 2023. Sounds tight but doable, especially if her apartment is paid off.

Chandler is right in this one. If she wanted it so bad she could've saved some . She's been planning it since she was a kid right. Why she didn't plan the finances. Her mom wanted her to marry sooo bad yet they didn't hesitate to spend the money they could use for the wedding . Chandler saved his hard earned money for years. It was insanely insensitive of her to pressure him to spend it all at once. That's insanely selfish.

    • @KS-xk2so

I agree Monica wanting to spend all Chandlers money is ridiculous. That being said, Monica never had to plan the finances for her wedding, her parents had been saving all their lives for it and had told her they'd pay for it, so she assumed it was covered. Only when she got engaged and asked them for the money, did they tell her they spent it all years ago, and had nothing for her. It must be hard to have been fantasizing for 25 years about a magical fairy tale wedding, only to be told with no advanced warning that it won't happen. So she clung to the first opportunity that came along for it to still happen. Once she actually engaged her brain later in the episode, she makes the right call.

This holds up so well today. One, Rachel, as much as I love her, had ZERO business being involved in this guilt tripping Chandler. Second, a wedding should be enjoyable, not a burden. I know 50 people who I see more than once at least throughout the year, and they’d all get top of the line food/open bar, and a memorable, sentimental experience. I wouldn’t make a milestone day something of an obligation or a chore. People who over embellish on something so sacred are insane.

Yeah off course if you look pretty you will be very happy for that moment but you can look pretty with off the rack stuff too you know? The money you save can be used in a better manner for the future and that can lead to happiness that lasts long than this short termed one.

This is a tough one but it really boils down to the couple. This is why finances should always be talked about while dating not during wedding planning. I had friends who spent a lot in their weddings and others who went on the practical side. Make sure your partner is comfortable with your preference though. There are indeed women who dream of a magical wedding even if it will cost them their life savings.

Also, I love what a great planner Chandler is. He saves like an adult, even to the point of planning for Joey's old age. And thinking back, he's probably the smartest of the bunch. When he really wants something, he gets it. Like tricking Phoebe into naming a baby after him, or beating Mike at ping pong, or figuring out how to make that kid cry at Joey's audition. It's just most time he's too chill to use his power for evil. I would NOT want Chandler as my enemy lol

True. What's different is that most of the time, Monica doesn't seem to realize that she's going overboard with the demands and usually sees her errors when she's called out. Rachel, however, knows what she's doing is bad and, no matter how many times she's called out for it, repeatedly acts selfish and throws her friends under the bus so she won't look bad.
