    Thanks. I have been watching pfsense related videos since yesterday. They all about procedures or features. Your video is really comprehensive and now I can grab some of the concept that is really needed over other 100 videos. Thanks man.

    I've been running pfsense for about 5 months now. I love it. No more drops, hdd caching, firewall and domain blocking. Set all my old wireless routers as access points with no DHCP and just wpa2. All tied together with a 24 port unmanaged gigabit switch. Best network experience ever. I really believe that this is the only way to go if you want a reliable service. And if you can find atom based 1u servers and switches on Craigslist for less than $100 total, there is no reason not to do this.

There are some things I still don't know how to or how they work (like memory usage on routing best explanation so far..) I'm thinking to start a video series as well but in my native language (spanish) so others can start using it and help to Support Pfsense is a great thing to have in your network.

    Are you planning to do more videos? Looking for one video to show how to make it secure. if i just have the modem connected to pfsense, will it protect me like a normal firewall does or do we need to add the rules? Maybe after that, if you show how to setup ids/ips, squid proxy, that will be awesome...

    My isp's router sometimes stops providing Internet on the wired connections.
    My wifi is 'perfectly fine" (for wifi).
    I have a ubuntu server running with qbittorrent plex and sickrage.
    When it happens I unplug my server and my Internet is back.
    Am I killing my router with my server or is it something else?
    My nat tables are disabled by the way...
    Just trying to switch the isp router with pfsense and you're helpful with your info so far. little long but the info is important. so keep it coming.

      You can run pfSense of off a USB thumb drive. I've got mine installed on an 8 GB. If you want to do caching or a lot of logging, you'll need need a hard drive or an SSD just to have enough space, but otherwise a thumb drive will do. If you're concerned about durability, you could mirror a pair of thumb drives.

    I love pfsense, opensense, and clearos. They are opensource right?, its free!!. But the major problem with these are the hardware. Being a student I cannot afford a new mini itx build with 4 gbe ports. Older hardware are just too inefficient ( I don't even have older hardware). x86-64 is power intensive platform. Most of pfsense hardware only advertise idle power consumption, while they should also be including full load values. I bet it will be over 70W.

    • @TheUbuntuGuy
      @TheUbuntuGuy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely not 70W! Give the specs, those boxes would max out at about 15W under full load, of which they are unlikely to get even close to.

    • @SrdjanRosic
      @SrdjanRosic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a good point, 100W == 150EUR/year where I'm from, which is also the cost of a fully kitted out brand new atom box.
      I guess the assumption that pfsense is making is that you can get a working pc for free and that over the course of a year, you'll figure out where to go.

    • @therealb888
      @therealb888 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Furneaux Thanks for the reply. Some quick online searches say normal wifi routers consume around the same power. I will be looking into details of official pfsense hardware. The only thing that I care about right now is efficiency (power consumption).

    • @therealb888
      @therealb888 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Furneaux tried pfsense on virtualbox. The problem is I can only access the webconfig if I have one virtual nic (over the WAN). I just can't seem to access over the lan. Can you pls help me? I didn't have this problem with clearos.

I have a physical router with dhcp enabled and virtual lab with pfsense acting as the router and windows server 2012 as a dhcp host. I know there is some chatter about running pfSense as a VM (virtual) or in a separate PC-Box. As for a small home network with maybe 6 devices in total, I find it difficult to justifying have a 2nd PC-Box running 24/7 when I can have this running as a VM.
    In your humble opinion (and for the masses) would you run pfSense as a VM or in a PC-Box? Pros and Cons of each if possible. Thanks.

    • @williamp6800
      @williamp6800 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fred Flintstone for a low power box for pfSense, check out pcengines.com or look at using an HP T620 Plus thin client with an add in Ethernet card. Both would be about 20 watts or under when running under load.

    • @williamp6800
      @williamp6800 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A Karim Siddiqui Raspberry Pi is ARM based and at the current time pfSense is only for X86 hardware. Take a look at pcengines.ch or look for an HP T620 Plus off eBay. The pcengines boxes can have up to 4 Ethernet ports and you can add a four port Ethernet card to the HP. I’m using the HP and it works great and uses under 20 watts at full load.
