  • Basic demonstration on how to set up your supplies, prepare your ink and load your brush for sumi-e (suiboku-ga asian ink painting) with Patricia Larkin Green at The Japanese Culture Center.
    1. Place Felt on your table (Wool felt is best) White, Grey or Black are most common.
felt repels the water keeping the ink and water in your paper and off of your table
    2. How to use the Ink Stone and Ink Stick to mix ink.
less than one table spoon of water dropped into the "sea" or indentation of the inkstone
mix for five minutes (or rub in a circle motion to the right for 40 times, then reverse and rub in a circle motion to the left for 40 times)
    3. remove the plastic from the tip of your brush. (that is placed on the brush to protect the hairs on your brush during shipping). Notice that the hairs are stiff. They have been covers with glue to also protect the hairs during shipping. Please gently press your thumb to the hairs to release the glue, You can also soak the tip in water to help release the glue.
