Lyrics:
The festival was over, the boys were all plannin' for a fall
The cabaret was quiet except for the drillin' in the wall
The curfew had been lifted and the gamblin' wheel shut down
Anyone with any sense had already left town
He was standin' in the doorway lookin' like the Jack of Hearts
He moved across the mirrored room, "Set it up for everyone, " he said
Then everyone commenced to do what they were doin' before he turned their heads
Then he walked up to a stranger and he asked him with a grin
"Could you kindly tell me, friend, what time the show begins?"
Then he moved into the corner, face down like the Jack of Hearts
Backstage the girls were playin' five-card stud by the stairs
Lily had two queens, she was hopin' for a third to match her pair
Outside the streets were fillin' up, the window was open wide
A gentle breeze was blowin', you could feel it from inside
Lily called another bet and drew up the Jack of Hearts
Big Jim was no one's fool, he owned the town's only diamond mine
He made his usual entrance lookin' so dandy and so fine
With his bodyguards and silver cane and every hair in place
He took whatever he wanted to and he laid it all to waste
But his bodyguards and silver cane were no match for the Jack of Hearts
Rosemary combed her hair and took a carriage into town
She slipped in through the side door lookin' like a queen without a crown
She fluttered her false eyelashes and whispered in his ear
"Sorry, darlin', that I'm late, " but he didn't seem to hear
He was starin' into space over at the Jack of Hearts
"I know I've seen that face before, " Big Jim was thinkin' to himself
"Maybe down in Mexico or a picture up on somebody's shelf"
But then the crowd began to stamp their feet and the house lights did dim
And in the darkness of the room there was only Jim and him
Starin' at the butterfly who just drew the Jack of Hearts
Lily was a princess, she was fair-skinned and precious as a child
She did whatever she had to do, she had that certain flash every time she smiled
She'd come away from a broken home, had lots of strange affairs
With men in every walk of life which took her everywhere
But she'd never met anyone quite like the Jack of Hearts
The hangin' judge came in unnoticed and was being wined and dined
The drillin' in the wall kept up but no one seemed to pay it any mind
It was known all around that Lily had Jim's ring
And nothing would ever come between Lily and the king
No, nothin' ever would except maybe the Jack of Hearts
Rosemary started drinkin' hard and seein' her reflection in the knife
She was tired of the attention, tired of playin' the role of Big Jim's wife
She had done a lot of bad things, even once tried suicide
Was lookin' to do just one good deed before she died
She was gazin' to the future, riding on the Jack of Hearts
Lily took her dress off and buried it away
"Has your luck run out?" she laughed at him
"Well, I guess you must have known it would someday
Be careful not to touch the wall, there's a brand-new coat of paint
I'm glad to see you're still alive, you're lookin' like a saint"
Down the hallway footsteps were comin' for the Jack of Hearts

This song is an absolute masterpiece. It's a big part of the reason that blood on the tracks is considered one of the best albums ever made. The story, the lyrics and the way he ties it all in. No one else could write this song.
It’s really dreamy, ethereal. My fav .
Arguably the best album ever made and one of the greatest works of art ever:)
And no chorus. Just a plowing steam engine of a song.
The best, not “one of”
Well, this song and Shelter From the Storm...and Tangled Up in Blue...and Idiot Wind...and Simple Twist of Fate...and Meet Me in the Morning...and Buckets of Rain...
OK... You get the picture.
yOU DON'T need a video clip. You just picture it in your mind.
Yes, so true.:-)
old school
Nailed it there
Yep
that's right
I’m 85 been following Bob Dylan for about 50years. Still listening in awe
I'm still gathering evidence, but right now, i'm pretty sure, that he is the reincarnation of Mozart.
He's just knowing the art,
one of not giving a fuck and losing all the fucks you've got to give.
Сейчас
Me too...80 years old....soundtrack to my life
Theres never been any other song like this where a whole movie was played out in a song, not even close. Only Dylan has done that, you watched a 2 hr movie listening to a song less than 9 min. Ridiculous talent. And to top it off, the song musically is foot stomping fun and great. Dude really is a genius.
The song is roughly the same length as the hurricane 🌀, at just under nine minutes, not five, lol. That aside, I know what you mean though.
Subterranean Homesick Blues is even more incredible. It seems like he is telling several people’s stories in under two and a half minutes.
Perfectly said👍😎
‘The Ballad of Frankie Lee & Judas Priest’ and ‘Hurricane’, to name two. All three songs are written & performed with aplomb by the same artist though, the one & only Robert Zimmerman.
@@oleggorky906Also, ‘The Ballad Of Frankie Lee & Judas Priest’ from the John Wesley Harding album.
@@davidbeeson9408 Yes. But don’t go mistaking Paradise for that home across the road! 😉
Anyone with any sense had already left town. 2024 anyone?
yeah!
This song should be made into a film - a
great western movie.
main actor Dan Duryea
Frankie and Jonny ish.
Jim Perpich My thoughts completely!
Xx love 😘 again 😘 Again 😘 AGAIN... BobDylan is THE BEST ! !
I think that's where they got the idea for Oceans 11 lol.
Thank God we are all lucky enough to have lived in the lifetime of this genius
Back of the net !!!
Bob is up there with Wordsworth, Dickens, Einstein. As you said. Genius
Take care.
.....(quite simply).....word......
Agreed
I feel blessed just to walk the same earth and existing in the same time as him
Maybe HE was lucky to be living in MY lifetime! Because he is writing about ME, and not ME about HIM!..
I think this is one of Bob Dylan's best songs personally, the characters and scenery described is so vivid. The rhythm is great and the story is just as great, I don't know I just really enjoy this particular song.
Millions agree baez si b gs. It better b m
Agree totally. And when I first heard Series of Dreams it had the same impact as when I first heard this all those years ago. Take care.
He sure knows how to tell a story through song and lyrics
I agree. This song is very underrated.
@@the_womble_king4357 Under rated by who?? Anyone who knows anything knows this song is a masterpiece and on one of the greatest albums ever produced! Not under rated! Cheers 😎
I dedicated this song to my sister who passed away in 2015. She always referred this song as a mini soap opera.
I think this would make a brilliant Broadway play.
Ha..I said this recently to a friend, it's every storyline of every soap opera.. blessed be your sister x
@@benholland5135 I would love to see an old school Shakespeare globe theatre show of the five minute songs ……… R.E.M Bad Day comes to mind about the song videos but plays, it could be a whole theatre revival thing.
I think this song is second only to "Tangled Up In Blue". Both are so descriptive of a story but TUIB includes a depth of feeling and loss not expressed here.
Sorry for your loss but she was right! I love it, too. Almost every day on repeat ..... What can I say? Genius can't be denied..... Love & Peace! :) X
The amount of talent it takes to write a song like this is mind-boggling.
Unparalleled
There's a story possibly apocryphal about Bod Dylan and Leonard Cohan and Dylan asking Cohan how long it had taken Cohan to write Hallelujah, Cohan said about 5 years all told and Cohan asking Dylan the same question about, God gave names to all the animals, (from Slow Train Coming,) and Dylan said it took me about five minutes.
I almost believe it; somehow genius seems to be hard wired into the guy.
3 fav and that's hard..lily,changing of the guards and your a big girl now..and everything else is amazing
Shunt forget baby blue either
I think it goes beyond talent...lots of talented song writers....this is a man who understands the truth like no other....
"Anyone with any sense had already left town." Sums up my life.
😆
I was one that stayed in town...and encouraged others to do the same.
Me too ,brother me too
My thoughts exactly as I sit in NYC during the height of the Coronavirus while everyone I know got the hell out of here😫
And many others
I've been singing this song word for word since I was 5, blessed are Grandparents with great music taste 🙌
Thank your Grandparents for introducing you to good music. I also introduced my granddaughters to good music. Bruce, Bowie (especially Bowie), Seger, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, The Pogues, etc. Even at my old age my granddaughters are surprised at my taste in music. Always loved music, no reason to stop exploring now.
No shit..
Good for you..

One of the best poets that ever lived. A true legend.
im nor as good as dylan but not bad ( trinidad apodaca poet on gppgle)
google
Not one of best, he is the best poet ever.
This may be the greatest album ever made. It's surely a contender.
Only rivalled by Desire...
It's a toss up whether I've listened to this album or American Beauty more times.
Either way it's Dylan's greatest work, just my opinion.
Yep!
Yep, it is for me but others would say Bat out of Hell or Rumours and I would put Street Legal above both of them with the condition that I like all sorts of music
That is an opinion, I can not contest Mr. Evans. If I might say something controversial? On any given day Bobby has five albums in my top ten. Between the combination of studio, live albums and additional bootlegs, I've gladly floated down a winding stream.
If you had to say today, which of his songs is your favorite?
A group of guys who rode bikes because they loved their lifestyle. Some cold beer a block of hash and Bob Dylan. We slept under the stars and rode off when we felt like it. I'm old now but those memories are precious and Dylan was always there with us.
I'm 80 listening to Bob since 1966-67. Stay healthy my friend.
@@user-nd8jv9xc2m ty.
There are not enough superlatives in the world to describe this man's talent. I've been listening to Bob since 1962, no one else even comes close. Not even close.
Probably true but I think Van Morrison is on a par
Dylan wrote “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” no one else could have written that. And he was 21!!!! He is the king. Each of his different “phases” is a hall of fame career on their own. Now factor that by 7 careers and u will understand. I hate to upset beatle fans but how many great albums/songs has Sir Paul made since 1970???? That’s almost 50 years. It ain’t that easy folks. Dylan is in a class by himself.
Couldn't agree with you more.
Me and my Brother said exactly the same thing. Nobody comes close to Bob Dylan!

As the leading actor hurried by in the costume of a monk.
There was no actor anywhere better than the Jack of Hearts.
⚰️⚰️⚰️
No one knew the circumstance but they say that it happened pretty quick
The door to the dressing room burst open and a Colt revolver clicked.
And Big Jim was standin' there, ya couldn't say surprised
Rosemary right beside him, steady in her eyes.
She was with Big Jim but she was leanin' to the Jack of Hearts.
Two doors down the boys finally made it through the wall
And cleaned out the bank safe, it's said they got off with quite a haul.
In the darkness by the riverbed they waited on the ground
For one more member who had business back in town.
But they couldn't go no further without the Jack of Hearts.
🎵🎶🎵🎶
The next day was hangin' day, the sky was overcast and black
Big Jim lay covered up, killed by a penknife in the back.
And Rosemary on the gallows, she didn't even blink
The hangin' judge was sober, he hadn't had a drink.
The only person on the scene missin' was the Jack of Hearts.
The cabaret was empty now, a sign said, "Closed for repair, "
Lily had already taken all of the dye out of her hair.
She was thinkin' 'bout her father, who she very rarely saw
Thinkin' 'bout Rosemary and thinkin' about the law.
But, most of all she was thinkin' 'bout the Jack of Hearts.
Absolutely great song
Thank you buddy. Thank you.

Steadying her eyes
Yes, Colt revolver not cold revolver. Minor quibble.
Perfect storytelling. Perfect rhythm. Perfect cadence. Poety of unmatched perfection 💜
When I hear this song, I become the Jack of Hearts.
I love this song. I know people criticize its place on the album, but it's always fit for me. The scenes and characters are so evocative, it's unbelievable.
I couldn't agree more. It's probably one of the best tracks from what is my favorite album of all time
I think he should've kept the original acoustic recording for this one, it would've fit much better with the rest of the album. But it's a great song nonetheless and I like this version too.
I personally change the nearly the whole first half with the outtakes from More Blood, More Tracks for a more slow/ somber tone. However, I keep this song as it is. I feel that the juxtaposition in tempo and "fun-ness" gives a bit of variety.
I also replace "Meet Me in the Morning" with "Up To Me". Nonetheless, this album is arguably the greatest album from a lyrical standpoint (not musically) of all time. This and Abbey Road (arguably the greatest album from a musical standpoint) are my top 2 favorites, Blood on the Tracks always leaning to the top spot.
I would replace Meet Me in the Morning with either Up to Me or Call Letter Blues, yeah. And swap You're a Big Girl Now with the acoustic NY version. Other than that, I wouldn't change anything, personally.@@GraffitiPops
The biggest crime in music history is having Yellow Submarine on Revolver... Especially as it would end up also being on the soundtrack album. Now THERE is a song that is totally out of place. Lily, Rosemary is a perfect livener on what could have otherwise been too morose an album. And it is fine storytelling too...
Did we ever do anything to deserve Bob Dylan. I think sometimes at night.
Kundan Gujar: Probably not but still, he graced us all with his genius.
What a great way to express this. The answer is probably, “No, we didn’t!”
I know I didn't.
who doesn't
The lyrics are so good they evoke a picture for every line. Visual music. And it just never gets old.
Songs like this are why I consider him a modern-day bard. He tells a story perfectly through music and through subtle wording, and he leaves it up to the listener to draw their own conclusions.

So right my friend. Dylan really did start everything. A friend said that Bobby wanted to be a superstar. Then when he realized his goal, he freaked. Just like so many of us ~~ The happiest of New Years to you and yours
There isn't enough appreciation I could express for the man's music. My biggest fear is waking up to another life in which Dylan doesn't exist. He's been a profoundly important bridge builder, piecing together lost and forgotten realms within my being. It's a silly thought though because Bobby's always been here within the smoke rings of our mind...

Hi Keith I am surprised you here, big fan of your work on the film School Spirit it was an excellent tour de force porn film and your scoring of two songs really brought it all together. What was it like working with The Reds? And do you think you'll ever make music for films that aren't just porn?

No chorus, epic story, another Dylan classic, the story flows from the beginning to the end, with a style only Dylan could write.
Robert Morrison: Spot on! I think that’s one reason I’ve loved it since I bought the album “back in the day”. And the organ just has a way of keeping the story telling going. 👍

Man, Johnny's voice. It wasn't great. But it was perfectly pure. From his soul. Helped me get past losing my older brother 4 days after having what to me, was the best conversation we ever had. Cohen too. They both, for me, just kept getting better, more real.

He has a bad voice... for most songs. His voice perfectly sooths his own songs.
Fantastic album love just as much as when I first heard it
I have seen Dylan singing 'My Back Pages' and his voice was awesome. It is in black & white so probably from early 60's. I don't know if I saw it on TV or on TH-cam, although I can't find it on TH-cam now. There are various versions of him singing this track but on the one I can't find his voice is awesome. @@texetera I had a friend who had a friend that worked for WEA around 1974-75. He gave a "Loss Leader" compilation of artists. Dylan did a cut o Lay Lady Lay, him and an acoustic guitar. Blood on the Tracks is one of those albums you might not be able to listen to the same ever again if you try to use it for catharsis during a tough time. This song especially always hits a painful chord, even though it's not one of the more overtly sad songs on the album. There is a feeling of loss and time running out that's very well captured here.
Dylan said he wanted to write songs that weren't fixed in time. This might be the best example of it.
Out of the world! He's written out a damn story in a song with twists, humor, social commentary, political slants, kinkiness, and character analysis! Holy smoke!
Check out stuck in mobile w the memphis blues again.just as good as this story.
@@brettallison5753 not really, but it’s good in its own right, can this really be the end?
@@steviesevieria1868 i dont know steve, mobile blues is as tangled up in blue as lily rosemary.i will sit in black diamond bay listening to many of this mans tunes.in my shelter from the the storm till the hurricane is over😂😂.
"The only person on the scene missing was the Jack of Hearts."
Classic Dylan-speak
From his greatest album a masterpiece...
Yes I can't stop listening to it.
Bob Dylan is cool, plain and simple.
"she had come away from a broken home, had lots of strange affairs. With men in every walk of life that took her everywhere." Brilliant play on words
That's not a play on words asshole. I'd rather watch maggots spin 360's in a dumpster than converse with you that's playing with words
It is obviously a play on words, and that is Dylan's talent, you kine 'like' the songs, but each one of them means different things to different people.
That is why he is Internationally Lauded as a Poet
The ignorant, like @Gina Mori will never understand Artistry, they do not have the capability
But she never met anyone quite like the jack of hearts ❤️
@@susanhavens8692 👍👍👍
@@ginamori8656 You have no right to call anyone else an asshole, unless it's as an expert.
The greatest album ever, start to finish? (I'm not even that big of a Dylan fan, but darn near every song is a masterpiece.)
My favourite Dylan album, one of a handful of the greatest.
Blood on the tracks is a beautiful album
I about 1.5 miles from the MN studio where the majority of it was done.
Yes
A big Bob Dylan fan and blood on the tracks is the best album in my opinion that he ever had
What a song. Every second counts
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here.
It’s like Bob wakes up from a dream and the lyrics fall out his head onto the writing pad ✍🏻 🎼 👌
The vivid characters come to life in brilliant lyrics and a carousel-like melody. I wish someone would create a movie script from this song that’s one of Dylan’s best storylines.
A movie would probably get watered down and wouldn't capture the beauty of the song and lyrics. Poetry doesn't transfer well to film. Also, maybe Dylan won't allow it to be made into a movie. He's pretty low-keyed.
I always have thought that also - I see it when he sings it
_Brownsville Girl_ is another. _Joey,_ _Black Diamond Bay_ & _Isis_ are some of his other songs that'd transfer to film. Even _Frankie Lee & Judas Priest_ would be a great one to flesh out.
there is a movie script. you have to go to Ohio State University to read it. not allowed to copy it. don't know why. never read it myself.
This song should be a Movie.
Bobs often described as a poor singer. No chance ! Singing is not all about holding notes ! Its about presentation rhythm and phrasing and interpretation. Bob is peerless in those aspects
Stop calling me a liar..
It's really starting to PISS ME OFF
True words?
Agreed
Great singer doesn't have a Pavarotti voice but who does
Also about “Storytelling” and Dylan is a master at storytelling
ppl commenting "there's no music like this in 2021" know dylans 1 of a kind. There wasn't music like this in 1021 & there won't be in 3021. Find happiness that you were able to share time in consciousness w him
And the funny part, the drilling went on in the, wall, nobody paid it no mind, must have been a hell of a party!
Definitely took me a few listens to appreciate when the "boys finally made it through the wall". That was just the B plot line to a full country western show.
I am a writer, a poet of 20 some years. I've wrote 4000 or so pieces, I've read the most brilliant writers and poets of the last hundred years or so. Poets like Plath and Bukowski(one amazing hombre). But Bob Dylan I believe is the greatest literary figure of the 20th Century. The best writers say the most in the fewest words. Dylan is the best and brightest writer I have or will encounter. No one- Lennon- McCartney.
Jagger- Richard,
Jackson Browne Warren Zevon none compare to the Jack Of Hearts..TJ STRUSKA
I regard townes van zandt in the same realm lyrically with dylan both are amazing
...well, Ms Cathy, for me, it's been 55 years, & 2 chapbooks, with maybe (only) 100-200 pieces i would show anyone; i first saw Bob in 64-65, in the Village (and over 50 times since, most recently, about 2 years ago, on Maui... ( now, i can say with No apologies & no pretensions, 'i write because of hearing him',... At first Trying to write 'Like him'....Wrong !.... but still, tryin is what led me to the conclusion that No One could (& so i set about finding my own way...and i was blest with some gigantic 'real writers' & their merciless feedback.)..i have seen Ginsberg, Yevteshenko, Maya Angelou, Spender, Vozsnesenski, Ferlinghetti and others, not One of them was better than this man (who once rhymed, "i've seen all these decoys/through eyes of deep turquoise..." ! )...he is Truly (quite obviously) "One of a kind", a master, and like all Masters, one who doesn't care about ANY of that....& with the Nobel, finally, that is Unquestionably established, as you say, This is the One Literary Giant of the 20th century, who not only has produced a body of writing, unfathomable in its' quantity, quality, range, diversity & down-right Universal.... For the Ages.... ALL live in is shadow, & No one writes without being informed by him & his work....and yes there is a fair handfull who, inspired by him, produce (no where near as much, as many, (Truly) GREAT pieces, from Lennon, Brian Wilson, Neil young, Kantner & Slick, Jackson Brown, Paul Simon, to Lightfoot, Cohen, Joni, & yes, Townes, Willie, Chrissie Hynde.... but They are/have been All PBD (Post-Bob Dylan), they exist, have prospered, done admirable work, but All because BD 'went ahead', off the edge of the map, finding, exploring, defining, & clearing the ground for every body else to build their work on.... (IMHO), 500 or even 1000 years from now, if humanity survives at all, they will be studying, delighting-in & and (Still) learning from the work of this 'simple song-&-dance man' for eons....he found a world, & in exploring it made it compellingly Realer, by living-in-it, leaving blaze marks on the trees as he passed, creating a level, a standard, still unmatched & most-of-all he showed Us to ourselves, for better or worse, taking the blame for it all .... he may well be why We haven't destroyed it (and Ourselves) yet....he "in a little hilltop village,/ they gambled for his clothes/ he bargained for salvation/ ". but they give'm a lethal dose...."
...and, nobody, anywhere was, or ever will-be "quite like the Jack of hearts".....
peace, my friends......
This is Bob's zenith, he has reach Nirvana, with giving us this perfect song
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
He's simply the best 👌 👍
Who can surpass this genius?
This song reminds me of my Dad. He passed away last year and i still listen to this song with tears in my eyes. R.I.P Dad😢
Who's better I ask anyone simply the best ❤
Dylan, at his best storytelling self. Love it!
I like this narration accompaned by a merry and rythmical music.
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
"Down the hall were footsteps, coming for the Jack of Hearts"
Utterly brilliant!! ❤️🌹
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
My favorite Dylan song. I like to thing he is the jack of hearts. Always winning. Such a cool song.
Has there ever been anybody who was his equal?? Not a chance.
No. A genius.
And never will be
Love it or hate it... This is Bob Dylan, friends!
❤❤❤❤ it.
@@brettallison5753 👏👏👏👏 !
A bloody masterpiece that needs to be made into a film. I’ll keep sayin’ that til Marty gets his finger out. Beautiful story. Perfectly painted. Two short films Marty Scorsese. This and Black Diamond Bay. Take no notice of Bob. They don’t have to be as lengthy as Renaldo and Clara. You could do it in your lunch break. I’ll write the script. You sort it with Bob’s ‘people’. Just could listen to this all day. Jesus. Bob could even be in it!!! Aine ♥️🃏🇨🇮🗝💣💰📽🎬👠
Black Diamond Bay. Omg. Then again literally every song on Desire could be a movie.😎 DYLAN!!
Very true.... joey, hurricanes been done, Isis... romance.... etc
They would just ruin it with cheap CGI though...
No one ever talks about black diamond bay.a favorite of mine.cant find it here.
This Album Is A Masterpiece~
Story time, folks ❤️
Surprised nobody has ever made this into a movie , a masterpiece
yeah agree - but perhaps because the mythic already informs a couple of great westerns ... Clint Eastwwod as the "preacher " etc
Now THAT is a CAPITOL idea! Make it happen dude. Pitch it to those duck-heads in Jollywood.
@@flemingcourtBollywood would rather make movies about Hindu gods.
May be Bob Dylan coming from another planet, he is an alien. Genius🎙🎶👽🤣👌
What a Freakin song, this a story, a movie even, Absolute Perfection of a Musician/Songwriter this man is
This may have been made into a play. I dunno. If it hasn’t, it bloody well should be. Hail Bob. A great oul yarn.
Just an Awesome Singer / Songwriter/ POET.
Bob Dylan's concert in Philadelphia in 74-75 was 1 of the best concerts I've ever saw. "The band" was just as good as Dylan and together they sounded amazing. Some people don't like Dylan's voice , I do. His writing skills are second were 2nd to nun . Guess that why they gave him the Nobel Prize for literature . He's an American icon .
Saw him in Chicago that year.all three shows.stood up during the the 3rd show and yelled all along the watch tower.(he was talking to the crowd when I screamed it) he heard me.they played it.they didn't the two prior shows.saw him again in 80.they played it.always said he remembers me.🤣🤣
Wow, someone give this man a Nobel Prize!
He did receive a Nobel prize.
The Jack of Hearts is the man we all love and want to win.
And the card metaphors throughout the song, the way the drums and the bass bounce along through the whole song. The cast of characters. Masterpiece.
Lyrical Genius!!
Best ever..
The awards here forth wl never be repeated
Blood on the Tracks is simple genius set to music. You can see every image of this song, the colors, the characters, the feelings. Only Bob Dylan gets this exactly right every time.
@bmisenta 💯
