"Jambi" from Tool's "10,000 Days" album (2006).
Man this song is hard! That middle instrumental part is really difficult in terms of variations. At some point I just put a "10" on the lower D string although you actually have to play it with a wah-pedal which is something I do not have. So this song is actually the first song on the channel where I use the delay effect. It is interesting for sure, but I don't really like all those effects. Now, there is one thing in particular that I want to explain which is the part at 5:28. I am pretty sure that they recorded 2 seperate bass lines for this bit because it doesn't sound like he was using an octaver at the time. So, you can choose whatever you want to play here, but you can definitely hear lower notes in this bit. If you don't have flanger than you're probably better off playing the lower part. Forward a bit to 6:36 where I grab the wrong chord in the playback, please just look at the tabs and not my stupid hands. It was about 30 degrees (86 Fahrenheit) so my concentration was not optimal. Anyway, it is very fun to play, but it is really difficult due to the millions of variations.
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning : D-A-D-G
Artist : Tool
Bassist : Justin Chancellor
Album : 10,000 Days (2006)
Song : JAMBI
Bass : Ibanez SR1805
3:55 one of the best bass slides in a song
This song made me want to buy and learn bass one year ago. Today, I finally was able to buy one. I'll definitely be using these videos as I learn, thanks!
Good luck and have fun!
How are you doing with bass I started at a similar time to you as well
@@eosnshsmshesjjssg I think I'm doing rather good. I've learned a bunch of songs mostly on Rocksmith. Have learned basic scales and arpeggios. And been practicing on a metronome regularly. I've been having a blast. Loving it.
What about you?
Saeed Chikhani I’m doing alright hardest song I know is forty six and 2 but I don’t know much theory
@@eosnshsmshesjjssg havent learned it yet. Hardest for me so far is probably playing Invincible fully without messing up. Individual parts arent hard but full song gets tough.
5:28 has got to be my favourite part of the song, and one of my top moments in Tool's discography in general.
1:04
I don’t know why but that sound tickles a good part in my brain
3:05 to 3:42 its interesting how the bass is doing more melodic work harmonizing with Maynard while the guitar is strictly on rhythm duty. Never noticed that in this song till now.
Vicarious also pulls that off, but with a call and response with the vocals
@@d3vitron779 the pot too
I like how you play at 5:28 for me thats the best part of the song, the way you played it just makes it sound so nice!
Pleasure to watch, your channel is a great learning tool.
ahahaa
👏👏👏
I love puns
Are u italian
People complaining it takes tool so long to come out with music. My god would you look at the complexity of music these guys are creating. This isn’t just simple stuff. This is mind blowing
It actually is
It's just that they don't even care about making music. Tool could have made this record in a week of they wanted
You are the coolest person on youtube for being the only one with bass tabs for this song!
I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this record, and when I heard this song for the first time. Because when it came to this part @3:56 I practically jizzed in my pants. I couldn't believe it. This was the new TOOL. I couldn't have been happier.
Jambi hypes me up so much - especially when im driving.
thank you so much bass lord
No problem!
Dude THANK YOU SO MUCH. i went to prison for several years and just got out. I started messing with bass as a teenager with big dreams of sharing with the world what i had to offer..... Sadly drugs has different ideas and i spent next 20+years strung out and barely surviving, selling bass I ever had . I am now 40 years old, and it just so happened this woman i met had a bass and guitar in her storage unit and is allowing me the privilege of paying them. I haven't put the damn bass down, thanks in large part to your videos! THEY MEAN THE WORLD TO ME THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Welcome back to the world! I'm just glad I could help :)
@LeoBassCovers2 can you help with adjusting action on a squire j bass? When I get it low like I want it the 12-20 frets buzz and the notes don't play
I feel like visiting a guitar store would maybe be better for that as there could be many many reasons for this. I'm certainly no bass expert when it comes to the technical stuff
this cover deserves a million likes. amazing job!
Thank you very much!
Don’t cry because it’s gone, smile because it happened :,)
:')
It isn’t gone
Just rewind the video
Ill do both
@Emile Turck what does this have to do with the video
definitely one of their hardest... whooh that intro alone is giving me a run for my money. great cover amigo
Fuck this intro.
Getting stuck in to this at the moment and man it's pretty hardcore. Some of these rythms are hard to keep in time with. Great job dude.
Seeing this live in 2008 was the peak of my concert-going experiences. Will never be topped.
the bass tone in the opening sounds more like D’amour than Chancellor, and then turns into Chancellor
You played that 1:06 flange/delay part perfectly!!! Sounded great. Awesome, awesome cover!
Thank you so much!
I just learned that the bass sounds like the Jambi’s chant itself. Now that’s really genius
Meka leka hi
Meka hiny ho
Sounds 5,5 not 5,8
this song is a workout, like I feel like I need a nap after playing this
>be me
>2 years without playing
>finally got my bass again and search tabs on yt
>jambi... why haven't I learnt that song before? It's my favourite
>00:06 Oh, of course...
3:42 to make it easier to count, it's basically just 3-2-1 3-2-1 for the double note parts and 1-2-2 1-2-2 for the four/five grouping, if that makes sense.
Exactly ^

@@LeoBassCovers2 oh wow thanks for replying :D I love your videos, they are amazing. And your tone is on point too.
By the way, sorry to bother you with this, but yesterday I was trying to play along to this video and my bass wouldn't work. The signal just doesn't reach the amp, and I assume my bass has some kind of problem with the electronics. I assume that, because I have 3 knobs, and the 3rd knob, closest to the bridge, is extremely loose and I can lift it up and down, I could probably break it off the bass if I wanted to. Now I gotta find a way to fix this, first time ever I have to do something like this. I hope I can find a way to solve this problem. Have you ever had a similar issue? Have a good day!
Thanks man! I also had knobs like that in the past (on the very bass that you see in this video) and I had to glue them back on basically. If you feel like you'll ruin it, you could also just take it to a shop. They'll know what to do with it
@@LeoBassCovers2 all right, thank you for your answer. I don't have any tools at home, no soldering iron, I only have some screwdrivers to remove the cover. The closest shop is like 50km away, so that is unfortunate :c
I am so excited to see this live next week
Do enjoy! They're amazing live
I would definitely hang out with you in person, playing tool on bass with a bl2 t shirt my boi played the good games
Thanks for posting these. I'm trying to learn it enough so i can hear it better in the final mix. I'm a music noob and bass can get lost in everything but hearing like this allows me to hear more of the music... if that makes sense.
No problem, makes sense :)
Bro, it's an older video, but thank you for this one, I love tool and your videos are just amazing, that's amazing!!❤️
No problem man, thank you!!
Hey man, some friendly advice here, during the delay portion you are missing the one note on the 12th fret of the d string where the note rings out instead of letting it ring out on the 10th fret of the g string, thank you so much because this vid helped me so much to get this bass line down, amen brotha ✊
Thank you very much for this cover! Really appreciate the work you put into these .. shows how awesome the bass in this song actually is and makes it so (relatively) easy to get a grasp of what to play! But I am still scratching my head over how you hit that 7 on the A and the 5 on the G (at 04:52) without the D String in between chiming in ..
A pleasure! You can actually play such chords while muting the string in between by hovering your finger above it so that it's a dead note. In this case, I think I just messed up a little bit because it's an open D chord. So you can just play the D string anyway.
The stuff in the description titled "some info no one will read about" I read every video
But that's illegal
@@LeoBassCovers2 uh oh
That whole thing was a lotta fun!
Excellent cover! Love the shirt btw.
Thanks a lot!
Awesome cover dude! Some al cisneros of sleep/om bass covers would be amazing to see!
Perfect cover man
Thank you!
Very nice cover(s)! Checked out a lot of your stuff - great work! I have been teaching myself this song from your tabs, and noticed something when watching JC play this live... That riff that starts at 0:45... I noticed JC slides from the F (3rd fret D string) to D (12th fret D string). Your video shows the D is played on the 5th fret of the A string (no slide). Very subtle difference, and yours still sounds great. Just thought I would let you know, as it looks like you've been very meticulous in creating your videos. :)
Awesome playing brother. Keep rocking 💪
Thank you, will do!
You rocked it man!
Thank you!
Loved the playing, and the shirt.
Thanks :)
New tool album coming out at the end of the month and September 13th borderlands 3 comes out, what more can a man ask for?
A decent album. It was kind of a flop if you ask me
@@serbiansleeperagent lmao
Thank youuuu now I can play one my favorite songs 🖤
Glad to hear :)
Thank you! You helped me get down that filthy figure in the middle of the song. Peace
Glad I could help with that!
Incredible.
idk whats better the fact hes playing my second fav. TOOL song or that hes wearing my second fav. game shirt
Don't tell me this is your second fav. bass as well..
@@LeoBassCovers2 nah its my favorite bass honestly
That was so cool
This is a great analysis;) Thank u, from JP.
i wonder if you could accurately replicate Adam's pull-thru technique on bass?
I dig the Borderlands t-shirt btw
This was sick
Your channel and natural abilities that you share are a real gift. I think music has its own special energy to it to which some of us are drawn.
Another great cover. Really hoping you can do 4 Degrees off Undertow mate :)
Thank you so much :)
I'm hoping to cover the remaining tool songs this year.
Am the big fan here enjoying!
thanks for re upping this one!, missed it. Would love it if you could upload the Steven Wilson tracks you had from Hand Cannot Erase!!
No problem! I'll try to download and upload them as soon as possible.
@@LeoBassCovers2 that is amazing!! Thank you so much!. I totally get why you're closing your main channel but at the same time you cover all my damn favorite groups (especially Riverside, no one has Riverside videos!) and I only discovered you a month ago :(. All the best!!!
holy FUCK that intro is hard to play
Good job man.
Can you explain what’s going on around 5:30? What are the notes in parentheses? And what do you mean flanger is only for the high notes? How do you do that?
Either way, thank you man. I don’t know if I’d be half as good as I am if it wasn’t for you. I picked up bass pretty much just to play Tool, and you’ve helped me every step of the way, so yeah, thanks again (:
Okay so, this part is really weird because they recorded 2 basslines in one part. There is a higher line which is the normal tab, but there's also a lower bassline which is the one in parentheses. If you decide to play the higher part, you should use flanger. If you decide to play the lower part, you shouldn't use flanger.
Really glad to hear that man. No problem :)
LeoBassCovers
Oh wow. I never woulda guessed that.
Explains why that part trips me out so much.
Thanks again!
Hi Leo, whenever you find a moment, could you please make the PDF for this song available too?
I'm thinking about making a remake for this song since I didn't use a bass whammy in the breakdown. So I'll wait with the PDF for now
@@LeoBassCovers2 looking forward to listen to the new version
Can u reupload reflection tool please
hey boss i'm trying to comprehend what the notation means on 5:31 in the video. Still pretty new so forgive my ignorance. Can you elaborate on what's going on, on the A/E string lines? I'm trying to look at your fingers too and it doesn't look like anything is happening on the A string, but there is notation on it. What do the parentheses mean?
So this part is weird because Justin recorded 2 bass tracks. So you either play the higher one (without parentheses), or the lower part (with parentheses). You get to choose basically. I hope that makes sense
@@LeoBassCovers2 ahhhhhhhhh got you. i did not know there were two tracks until you mentioned and i re-listened. thanks for letting me know!
why are you fingers shaking so hard at around 1:30? are they cramped?
My whole left arm used to be numb. We managed to get it to work again, but my fingers are always shaking, so that's probably why.
subscribed!
Thanks for the sub!

I would love to see a cover from you on Boom Boom out go the lights from The Pat Travers Band, Go for What You Know. I'll Be visiting your Jambi vid frequently for a while. Thanks for taking the time to do what you do!
3:56 that moment
Doesn’t JC use his Guyatone BR2 during the solo?
Tried playing this for the first time because I can play most tool songs except for the ones on 10000 days ... I think it's safe to say that my brain is fried and got nowhere. Fuck. Shows how much Justin has grown as a musician, if you compare his work at Peach with this
I've never listened to Peach to be honest. But yeah, 10,000 days is the least straightforward album when it comes down to the basslines.
Sounds great 👍what bass are you using and how do you get that tone?
Thanks! This was an Ibanez SR1805 and honestly, it just had such a tone from itself. Combined with new strings, it sounded like this
its funny that at 5:36 it sais 3 to 5 hammer, but apparently a slide works fine haha
Whoops.. It's an old video!
Can you play this on 4 string? Great cover btw :)
Thanks! You can :)
I don't even touch the 5th string
Justin, the bassist for tool, plays a 4 string
This is two years old now but I've taken the time to take this into notation (as I am much more comfortable reading it) and have split my head right in two trying to figure out the flanger + delay riff first appearing at 1:04. If you count the tablature stems you get 1.5 + 0.5 + 1.0 + 0.5 + 3 + 0.5 + 0.5 + 1 which totals 8.5 beats. Not 9/8. So I did some digging though some horrible, horrible tabs (thank you for your amazing work btw the alternatives are awful and you are amazing) and couldn't find a switch into a 17/16 time. Then I tried to work out the rhythm by ear (you'd think a bass player would be good at this stuff) and have concluded that the dotted quarter (referred to as 3 in the count) is NOT a dotted quarter but actually a dotted quarter tied to a sixteenth (3.5 total). I could be wrong and I might be reading tablature wrong (I had a buddy of mine look it over, he was scratching his head same as me), but I still want to get to the bottom of this. Thanks for reading my brick of text.
Immediate Edit: It seems I am not the great researcher I thought I was. I did some more digging though the comment section to see if anybody else had gripes about the rhythm when I found somebody asking for a PDF. As I downloaded it I was praying it was notation and surely it was. The culprit was a double dotted quarter. My pea-brain only knows how to tie after the first dot. This is probably the reason I feel more comfortable in notation. Thanks for the great pdf and keep on spiraling out.
I wish I could answer properly, but I honestly have no idea what the "answer" is. I don't know enough music theory to know if it should be dotted quarter notes or not :(
@@LeoBassCovers2 You gave me my answer! It was in the pdf. Thanks again!
what kind of bass do u use?
This was played with a Ibanez SR1805. I sold it years ago though.
I thought the tone sounded great and familiar, took me a second to figure it out. Fellow SR Premium player (2605).
Shit, does anyone know how to pickup metal bass line? Cuz usually it’s buried in the mix
Having mixing/mastering software helps a lot to get rid of certain frequencies. But with metal, it will stay very difficult..
Luke Macintosh has a TH-cam vid on just that topic. Check it out.
Cool cover! Can you make something from Karnivool next?
ohh wait :^)
What was your amp settings and did you have any distortion or overdrive on the intro
I honestly can't remember since this video is like 2 years old by now. I didn't use distortion or overdrive though. I used to just go big on treble and bass
LeoBassCovers thanks! I’ve learned a lot of tool songs from your videos and keep up the great work
Can you put a link for your delay pedal
I didn't use a physical pedal. It was just a digital plugin
👍🏽
How do you get that tone ?
I honestly can't remember. I think the strings (pro steels) heavily affected the tone in this one and I wasn't happy with it.
LeoBassCovers thanks :)
Why arent you playing your D string thats already there and tuning to drop D?
He has 5 strings dipshit
Jambi is back??
Looks like they're unblocking things again.
Long live Jambi
What kinda bass is this being used here ???
Ibanez SR1805 :)
What flanger do you use?
It's all digital. so no actual name of a pedal cause well, there was no pedal lol
LeoBassCovers thank uu
That may be the sexiest looking guitar I have ever seen.
It's a bass dumbass
@@turq1824 a bass is considered a guitar, ever hear anyone call it a bass guitar?
@@deferdfive0928 Only morons call it a "bass guitar"
@@turq1824 that's what it is though, a bass is part of the guitar family
@@deferdfive0928 Nah, bass comes from the stand up bass which comes from the cello. Bass is nothing like guitar even if it is in the shape of a large guitar to an untrained eye such as yourself. Maybe you should try to know what you're talking about and maybe know how to play the instrument before trying to tell someone who knows the instrument about it.
Why have a five string if you’re just going to drop D?
Just to be accurate. Most bassists don't own a 5 string bass so it wouldn't be fair to transcribe it for a 5 string bass :)
I use the 5th string in my own time.
Hey Leo how long have you been playing bass?
2 years when this video came out. But 4 years now I think.
I like to tap my foot to this song while listening with headphones. Some people just get confused bruh
I can imagine..
Just for me or is much more easy playing with the fingers?
I feel like Tool is usually a bit easier if there's no chords
nice shirt
are you doing the weird pull of that guitar does? on the A and D(higher) string?
the incident when if bass off you hear it. All the song is about the bass.
Nice shirt
Thank you

Again, great playing. But from an instructional stand point, your fingers are obstructing. You've got hands / fingers like mine. Theres room to make room for the audience. No mal intent here. Just a suggestion.
BORDERLANDS SHIRT!!!
Doesn’t sound right 🤷🏼♂️
Scott Harris it’s really hard to get the echo sound right I think. Other than that he was right on I thought
Sounds awesome mate.
