1) avoid strangers when possible (talking S.W. Pacific there) 2) YES. You are going from Hawaii straight to Alaska, right? Wow, a full set of replacement sails will be handy, but I can't even begin to go into everything that can go wonky when you go from so warm to so cold in a couple of weeks. A good supply of epoxy is needed, covers for the solar might also be good..... jeez, its a long list! 3) Well, based on what I saw 4 minutes in, I suggest you add a crowbar to your toolkit! (I couldn't help saying that, my bad) 4) This is just a SUGGESTION for how to prep for the NE Pacific; as you already know, whoever named that ocean "Pacific" either had an incredibly lucky cruise or was and absolute mad-lad. What I suggest is that you pick out some gear, not based on what might go wrong for you, but what you might need to PREFORM a rescue operation. After all, you just might get that call, and it helps you look at a worst-case scenario from a different perspective. Good luck!
@@TeuluTribe Reef early - helped to get notice to do so via Weather helm on the Rudder telling you to depower - oh and Run your Diesel engine daily - l like to run it for about an hour before sun up to make hot water and top up the battery while cooking breakfast then showering , then an hour or so after sun goes down, for hot water for shower, Cooking evening Meal and Washing up. Helping to keep the engine in great condition, and the batteries happy. plus with a good propulsion low rpm prop, while running and someone is on watch you can be on auto pilot, and travel over 7 miles in an hour, for not much diesel Consumed. Plus, Engine Oil, cooling water, and gearbox / Saildrive levels get checked twice daily, and any leaks get spotted. 👍 Bob. PS. Always keep your Documents handy in Case you get asked by Authorities to invite them on board - so don't forget where the biscuits and cakes are, if they'll stay for a Cup of Coffee - For me, this went down well with the really great people in the US Coastguard service, as did the Welsh Flag for them to put up on their Canteen Wall. The USCG is such a terrific Organisation, that frankly, if I wasn't such an old fart, I'd apply to join to be honest. 👍 highly recommended. Best Wishes. Bob.
PS. the USCG Boarded, a couple of days after going through the extreme Tornado Storm successfully,,and though below deck was still in a bit of a confused mess, I was ablecto get my hands immediately on the Safety Gear and documents they needed to check and they were a bit horrified to hear that in Britain you needed a Licence to operate a VHF Radio, as well as a Firearms Licence to have a Flare Gun, which I boughtbover the Counterbin WalMart. Both are unnecessary obstructions to Safety Afloat. Then we had a long chat about how I got through a severe Tornado Storm Unscathed , and how that was largely down to the Lewmar Delta Anchor being pushed out sideways at just the right moment, which prevented a Capsize, then they sorted out a q2 month Cruising Licence for me to collect from the New Jrrsey Office, which meant I could have a relaxed Cruise down the East Coast, and into the Caribbean, and avoiding the expense of Checking in to the Bahamas. Only problem was Running into the Wrecking Gang working New York Harbour, on my way to New Jersey, which lost me my lovely Endeaver, which proved to be tough enough to get me through it alive, before she went down off Jersey Shore. Ho Hum, Win Some, Lose Some. I miss Becka's enthusiasm and spirit, but I have truly been impressed with Zach's determination to power through and tackle these projects that are going to make your upcoming travels easier, more convenient and safer. It's so amazing to see your growth as sailors and boat job extraordinaires! Kudos to Zach and looking forward to seeing Becka back on the boat again very soon.
Zach, it's IMPORTANT to have a suitable vent overboard from the lowest spot in the propane locker (without a vent line running uphill at any point). Also, you need to make sure the hatch into the locker is absolutely air tight. Propane is heavier than air, and when it gets down into the bilges is when boats go BOOM!
With your modified gas locker, propane is heavier than air so you need a drain in the locker that dumps overboard. That way in the event of a leak the propane will dump overboard rather than build up inside the boat.
I would imagine there is a drain in there seeing as a gas bottle has been in there for ???? years . I hope the vessel is fitted with a good working Gas Detector ? if not in event of a fire the Ins will not pay out.
Wow! This is just three days ago! That means that I have to start watch your first episodes.. I started with the Atlantic crossing this summer after my sailing vacay and have after that been stuck! My record was when I was hungover after a crayfish party (Swedish tradition..) and I was watching your channel for 10 hours straight😅 Love your channel! 😍
Hi Zac, Just a quick tip- you don't want to use epoxy for fixing gelcoat dings. Use polyester or vinylester resin instead. Reason: you can epoxy over gelcoat but you can not gel coat over epoxy. The previous owner of my boat used epoxy for all sorts of touch ups and now that the epoxy has changed color over time those areas stand out and cannot easily be fixed. Instead of a quick gel coat fix I now have to grind out all of the old epoxy and layer up the gelcoat repair. It is not worth the grief down the road. To prevent the urge to use epoxy for repairs (because it is quick and easy) I transferred some color matched polyester resin into a small dispensing bottle and got a small bottle of MEK to go with it. Now it is just as easy to grab the correct stuff when i want to make a quick repair and it looks better in the end. Great job as always! Fair winds, following seas and all the best from California!🧡
Thanks for the valuable tip! It's always great to learn from others' experiences, especially when it comes to boat maintenance. I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future repairs!
Poor Becka gets to watch all this from home while you fidfdle ar5ound getting as much done as you are able. And its coming along fine. You are working ur buns aff Zack...wtg
I've just finished binge watching your entire boat journey in about 10 days. I love it and you've inspired me to take up sailing with the eventual goal of exploring all the amazing places in this world via wind power.
For your propane bottles. When you get the chance slip a thin bit of closed cell foam in between them. Between the walls and bottles and between the bottles themselves. It should quiet them and prevent damage from rubbing together.
All butane and propane lockers for British boats are built with outboard gas drains inland or marine.🤔 You have now entered the Dadaist world of international gas bottles and regulators.. basically Mexico is different from the US .. and you may find the problem re occurring as you progress. Which along with the heat is one of the reasons why so many boats have gone induction electric or at least bought a plug in back up single or double unit... but that means you do need to use the correct pans as it's the pan base that heats up not the cooker top..which is safer if things start moving.
You should try to place a nylon shim between the wheel plate and the tender plate to stop galvanic corrosion and also coat your bolts with a barrier past like duralac or tef-gel... Corrosion hapens fast on tender wheel systems. 😅
I noticed you were prying things loose in this episode. You might want to consider placing a piece of wood where your hammer meets the fiberglass to help distribute the load so you don't end up punching a hole.
No tears about butane if you plan to sail to the arctic circle. This is about boiling point - where a substance transitions from liquid to gas: propane's boiling point; -42°C (-43.6F) - Gas Bottles Sizes go up to 47kg (103.6 lbs) butane's boiling point: -2°C (28.4F) - Gas Bottles Sizes go up to 15kg (33.1 lbs) As you can see, bottles can be a lot larger with propane too, so on long legs of Pacific crossing or long stays near the arctic's low presence of humans.
Well worth putting insulation behind the head lining before you put it back. To reduce heat where you are and retain heat in cooler climes. Just done this on a Sigma 36.
Great refit Zack, I have watched your videos from the beginning and definitely admire you for the jobs the two of you take on. Tip : leave the nuts at the end of the bolts when hammering them to avoid ruining the threads. I like the dinghy wheels where did you find them ? I have searched the internet with no success.
Zach, you made an episode all by yourself worthwhile watching, without your cute partner. You're doing a great job. One thing keeps popping up in my mind, the words of an old blue water sailor turned boatbuilder. He wanted to have a waterproof seal on the outside only. If you seal on the inside as well, you're asking for the core between outer and inner layer FGRP to get soaking wet when the outside starts leaking first because it is exposed to the elements more. He added that he wanted to know when the outside springs a leak so he can immediately fix it. Makes total sense to me.
Thank you for your thoughtful insights! It's interesting to hear the perspective of a seasoned sailor turned boatbuilder. Your advice about waterproof sealing is definitely something to keep in mind while working on projects!
Time flew watching this. Feel replacing the bottle holder base would still be good even thiugh you are ratchet tie-ing them plus something sitting under them like rubber pad to protect fibreglass. And eliminate noise. Becka will be gutted missing out on being involved. Knee comes first. Looking forward to hard dodger project
Amazing work ethic, Zach. A little late for me to say this, but what about removing the butane/propane system altogether and switching to electric? Would save a bunch of space and hassle.
We can fully cook on electric as we have induction and an air fryer . However, if we have a week or two of bad weather and low solar yield we cook on gas to save power 😊
Earlier you mentioned the possibility of adding a second solar panel (and maybe an extra battery), and then you could always keep a small camp stove just in case.
A strange thing about hammers, of you put your hand at the base of the handle they work better. :P I have watched every video so I feel like I can talk sheet.
Here's a tip I learned from a custom car builder: If you have areas where you don't want caulk to stick, wipe them down with WD-40. I don't know it it works equally well with marine sealant, but I can attest it works great with construction glue. I like to put some blue painters tape where I want the glue to stick, wipe it all down with WD-40 and peel the tape off, taking care not to spread the WD-40 into the glue contact areas. Worth giving a try?
15:08 nice idea with the pre-polymerisation of the Sika, and only then tighten! Will do that as well in future, thx! One question however: why the black version of Sika!? Was white sold out? :)
Hi Zack. I've been cooking with Propane since the 1070's, and I've found it is the best to cook with, and only the Coleman Gas Blend comes close. If you have a nice inverter, then you can save quite a lot of Gas by pre cooking with a portable induction Hob, then keep the benefits of cooking withbgas to finish the cooking with, and without draining too much from the batteries. All the Best. Bob in Wales still. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍
Thanks for sharing your insights, Bob! It’s fascinating to hear about your experience with propane and induction cooking. Your tips on combining both methods are really valuable!
@@darrentorr1 😄 I am old, but not that old this time around. That was supposed to be the 1970's but I'm only just stating to get my eyesight back, after having a blood pressure tablet blow thevoptic nerve in my right eye, damage my left eye and my vision was so bad that I gave up driving, then someone told me to try taking high Purity Carbon 60 solution, which I started about 10 days before I got hit by a really nasty Bacteria that was going around, which led to Respiratory Failure, Pneumonia, Kidney Failure, but thankfully, due to literally Dayscand Nights of Constant Meditative Deep Breathing Technique, when it came, the Heart Attack was only a Mildvone, and I was already in the Intensive Care Unit, and in the hands of the wonderful teams in there, after an equally wonderful Ambulance Team had got mecthere Alive. It was while I was in the ICU, that I noticed that vision in both eyes was improving, so a doctor did some basic checks and confirmed the improvements, But I still need to have glasses suitable for distance and reading. so my apologies for totally missing the typo. Best Wishes. Bob. 👍🌟🌟🌟😄
@@TeuluTribe Worth mentioning, induction Hob Compatible Pressure Cookers are really useful to have on board. I picked up a Medium and Small sized ones from Amazon in the USA for my last boat - up to pressure really fast then onto a low flame on the hob to finish off or into a Roasting Tray in the Oven. I had made the mistake of fitting an Alcohol Stove - a really expensive Stainless Steel one - thinking it would be easy to get fuel for it - but it turned out to be a complete disaster, and the fuel consumption was horrific, plus lots of burns as I just couldn’t see the flames. Never Again lol 🤣 Best Wishes and Safe Travels. Bob.🤔🌟🌟🌟👍⛵️❤️
The one question is why do they not come with the fittings already, seems like a no brainer. Dragging a dinge up the beach is a pain. But off topic great work fixing the boat. Hope her in doors comes back soon, but you are bloody doing it.
You should never ever move a solar pannel flat as it's glass you always carry glass mirrors solar on end Never hit a bolts end as you will damage the thread, screw on a nut then hit it and punch, out the remaining A Goog time to add insulation between the ceiling and roof reduces heat and cold into the cabin. It's simple to do and not expensive Enjoy your refit. Solar pannels theses days are all bonded down with special brackets to allow air underneath and never ever bolted down to eliminate holes in your roof as all Motorhomes solar are attached this way now
seen Zack, if you turn the chisel blade over and use the blade that way it will not "dive" into the workpiece so easily, hope you get some kneepads too. Take Care Dude
Thanks for the tip! I appreciate the advice on using the chisel blade correctly. I think in a few years I might need some kneepads, but thankfully I'm alright at the moment😅

And pass this message on to all boat owners out there.
Busy little beaver Zach. Sometime when my wife is gone, I get more done. Not implying anything, it's just I don't have anyone to hang out with and find other ways to be distracted. No tears about butane if you plan to sail to the arctic circle. This is about boiling point - where a substance transitions from liquid to gas:
propane's boiling point; -42°C (-43.6F) - Gas Bottles Sizes go up to 47kg (103.6 lbs)
butane's boiling point: -2°C (28.4F) - Gas Bottles Sizes go up to 15kg (33.1 lbs)
As you can see, bottles can be a lot larger with propane too, so on long legs of Pacific crossing or long stays near the arctic's low presence of humans.
Thanks for the info, it was definitely worth changing it out then!
Interesting info
@@marshahowes8756 - yes, it means with butane at -3C the gas has become a liquid, there is no pressure any longer and you can forget to burn any gas.

That’s a long time, nearly a. 1000 years .LOL😂
Propane locker must have a drain at lowest point to outside of hull.
I did not make that clear, but ours does have one at the bottom of the locker😊
The one question is why do they not come with the fittings already, seems like a no brainer. Dragging a dinge up the beach is a pain. But off topic great work fixing the boat. Hope her in doors comes back soon, but you are bloody doing it.
When are you coming down to Aussie Zack and Becca?
I'm a bit late to the party, but why didn't you use butyl for the screws of the handrails? It stays flexible forever and is only sensitive to light.
What were you doing shaving your bilge areas there are creams for that.😮
Who knew I was missing out on the bilge cream craze!
You should never ever move a solar pannel flat as it's glass you always carry glass mirrors solar on end
Never hit a bolts end as you will damage the thread, screw on a nut then hit it and punch, out the remaining
A Goog time to add insulation between the ceiling and roof reduces heat and cold into the cabin. It's simple to do and not expensive
Enjoy your refit.
@@TeuluTribeonce you hurt them they will for ever there to remind you, you should’ve been more careful the first time. From a 67 yr old Canadian, the body will thank you, take care

I love watching you guys. But I am saving for my own Boat. Even though I am a mature Person. I am not planning on crossing Oceans just the English Chanel which I have sailed before. But every Penny counts at the moment.
Nice to see your face cheek ❤
At 9:44 is that a right angled socket wrench???? Didn't even know they existed but it looks sooooo useful
It sure is. We got it for our battery bank as some of the connects are almost impossible to tighten without it.
Rebecca will think you have bought a new boat.
Zack you know we love you but just wondering if you have any news of when Becka might be healed enough to come back home? Best to both of you!
Thank you for your kind words! We're hopeful that Becka will be back home soon.
At least propane will start to boil out of the bottle around -40°. Butane will not work when the bottle is below freezing temperature.
M6 bolts are more than adequate as the shearing load is over 1100Kg each bolt !
You need to put wood under those bottles before they vibrate the hell out of the fibre glass ! and wood between the 2 bottles
❤
Why you don’t remount the solar high of the railing so can grab on to it?
Get in touch with parlay revival TH-cam channel and Colin is the skipper and captain of his vessel he's in partnership with his mate in Australia that has cleaning products for most every boat out there and it's ocean safe type stuff doesn't harm the environment. And pass this message on to all boat owners out there.
“Manscaping in the bilge area”… not something a mother expects to hear her son taking about 🤭🙉🙉🙉. Love you my boy 😂
Hello zack and becka. Say high to Parker. Hope he is doing fine.
Busy little beaver Zach. Sometime when my wife is gone, I get more done. Not implying anything, it's just I don't have anyone to hang out with and find other ways to be distracted. This is the first Manscape ad where the show someone shaving there face instead of some young lady touting the value of a clean and smooth #@%^$ area. Well done Zach. But the shirt don't lie. 😉Stay safe and hurry home Becka. ❤🙏
Glad you enjoyed the Manscape ad twist!😉
Haley is on crutches from a patella dislocation ?
♥️♥️🥰🥰
Looks like Becca got a pedicure 🙂
😀😀👍👍❤❤
every time I watch you, I get an urge to go watch game of thrones.
I guess I should start charging HBO for all the new viewers I'm sending their way! 😂
Who's the giggly girl spraying the water???
Becka 😆 this integration was pre filmed
@@TeuluTribe Phewww....
not gonna lie but i do miss her giggle that she does
👍🧿
Where's Tilly ?
Just keep plugging away….
Nice commercial?
How do you pay for all these adventures?
Boats, like aircraft, guzzle money!
Are you independently wealthy?
Patreon, TH-cam and integrations(company’s like Manscaped). Unfortunately we are not “independently wealthy” 😂
