Map and Compass Triangulation

- Using a map and compass to find your location. This method assumes you know how to:
1. Set the declination on your compass and
2. identify landmarks within sight on the topographical map.
In conjunction with those skills, you can use your compass to find your exact location.

he is right, some people do not listen. he said true north(not magnetic) and he said he assumed you understood and did the declination. good video my son understands it now thank you.
To do this you need to use 3 bearings.....that's why it's called triangulation! Tri meaning 3!
At 1:50 -- The north/south lines on the top map are aligned to GRID north, _NOT_ true north. Forget True North. Only magnetic north and grid north apply to navigation with gridded topo maps.
This ol' boy needs to learn how to triangulate. There's no telling how many people he has mislead.

James Bowie This guy has me all messed up .....how are his east bearings 288 and 250..... thought maybe map was wrong way but they don’t make sense no matter which way you turn it
The guy has no clue!! Probably gets lost everytime he goes out!!!!
I would redo this video. Mention putting red in the shed while taking a bearing. Mention the map remains still and away from metal. Emphasize while on the map you must triangulate by putting red in the shed. The best method is to plot your location by using the compass as a protractor. No need to orientate the map and risk needle pull from metal.
I think he forgot to do the most important thing. Red in the shed.

Does it matter what orientation the map is when you place the compass on it to transfer the degree coordinates?
Yes. If it's not aligned to true north, then however far off the map is from that, your calculated location will be off that much as well.
You should turn the dial on the compass, not try to read where the needle is

Its very important that you Back Pack Hack learn how to do this properly before you go misleading people. For a start a triangle has 3 lines, not 2 as in your demo. Do some research!!!
As I have stated before: DEMONSTRATE why this is wrong. Just SAYING it is doesn't make it so.
When you replace your compass onto your map, after taking your bearing, you must align the meridian lines on the compass with the north/south lines on the map. You did not do that.
